- At Monzo, we're allowed to work remotely. In March I took advantage of this by spending a week in Berlin.

What I like about this guy is how realistic his videos are, he's not trying to be a Cacey Neistat a truly, simple day of a remote dev. Great work dude.
Most volgers do, the background music and time lapses. Time lapses are ridiculous unless there is a relevant context to use them. Most volgers just imitate. I'm not referring to Jack Wright. Other lazy volgers. Jacks vlogs are good. He still can't cook. He's a good bloke can gather from his material.
This is how my 8-year old cooks pasta.
I bet he is very smart at work hahahah
I don't think Jake realises how funny his cooking videos are.
Proper dry humour the way only Brits know how to do.
Refer to my input. Yes can't cook yet. He's a nice guy you could have an intelligent conversation with and a few pints.
Is it just me or does watching this guys video make you just want to a bit of extra work on your projects? - I like how he doesn't moan about work load, enjoys life and fits his tough sprints around the work. Nice work man please continue to upload
I can't stop cracking up at "what's the singular of spaghetti? Spaget?" 😂😂😅
It's actually spaghetto I remember from Italian classes, not that anyone would ever refer to one piece of spaghetti!!!
how does one goes 25 (?) years without ever opening a jar of pesto 😂😂
Especially when you've a been at uni before. Pasta and some sort of pesto is one of the student standard meals (at least here in Germany). :D
im getting to that point of having never opened a jar of pesto. i don't think i've ever eaten it before. i used tomato sauce with pasta.
I'm 21 in uni but never tried it lol
What is pesto?
I'm 32, spent 6 years working in commercial catering and I've still never opened a jar of pesto 🤷🏼♂️
Nooooooooooo, you have to put past inside water only when it start to boil, not before. 😅. The video is nice 👍.
Monzo sounds like an awesome company to work for. Moreover, they're lucky to have you! :) I've just graduated and am due to start as a software engineer at a company in Belfast. Definitely nervous, but I'm trusting in God to bring it to pass.
Been waiting for a new update! Half an hour? Dropping everything else for this. ❣️
Boil the water, wait for it to reach a rolling boil. Add the spaghetti and stir. Set a timer for 9 mins. Drain and serve
What a relief to see another video of yours.
It has been a while.
Hope to see more of your carefully put together videos.
Very articulate and understandable.
Keep up the good work at Monzo
I am so happy to see this in my recommended list Welcome back! And working from Berlin sounds amazing
Came from work and immediately left everything and watched the whole video. It was good tbh and the music is ❤️. We need more of Monzo videos :)
The totally life-changing singular form is "spaghetto" ...
Yes for some reason I remember that from my Italian lessons!!
I've been watching your videos since before you graduated from Cambridge, and it's really quite funny to see such a consistent trend of questionably (un)prepared meals. Love you, thank you, and please please please for the love of everything good in this world remember to stir the pasta while it's cooking.
Yayyy!!! Another video! Glad to see what you’re up to again!
Loved the video, as always you make things interesting, entertaining and something I can relate to. Thanks Jake
You could give an another chance to Warsaw but this time go there either spring or early autumn (summer may be good too but it’s very hot sometimes) and rent an apartment on the west side of Wisla (river), best somewhere around the city center (or at least close to metro station). There are many co-work spaces, cafes with an excellent WiFi connection. That’s a really good place to work for a freelance programmer (or just someone who has to get work done outside the office)
Really enjoyed this Jake - keep'em coming when you can!!
YESSS IMPROMPTU COOKING WITH JAKE 😊
Sucks that the weather in Berlin was so poor. Thanks for sharing your experience there! I'm doing an internship in the area this summer and I am loving it.
Love this series!
The best cooking show on RUclips
It seems that you are really enjoying this trip while thinking about a new work environment. You look very happy at such moments! I think I understand you well in this
"In our time" broadcasted by the BBC is quite nice
loved the lofi chill music in this!
Not far too much context :) actually I'm very grateful that you've made these videos. I was working for a bank last year and moving data around. It's great to know how it's done somewhere else. Anyway, watching this, I can reflect on my own habits. And it looks like I need to go outside and work out a bit, instead of just sitting home and thinking how to solve abstract problems. Thanks, Jake!
Jake the best, keep posting Jake :)
Hello Internet is a great podcast, as is Cortex (both feature CGP Grey as a host). One more relevant to developers is Developer Tea, which is a quick podcast about working as a developer.
Thanks for the suggestions 👍
Nice vlog! gald to have you back

Somehow your vlogs are very calming
Just watched this today. Best podcast ever, shagged Married annoyed with Chris Ramsey. You will not be disappointed.
"Science Vs" is a good podcast. I enjoy that the episodes are short and you can dip in and out as they don't relate to each other at all. Each one is a bite sized topic, you can choose interesting ones simply from the title.
I just came home from work and now I am watching you work. Nice.
freak...
Nice to see another video Jake!

Your RUclips banner still says 'new video every friday'...think it needs updating lmaoo
Please do more videos! Love the life of videos
Love your videos! Nice, calm and relaxing. Next time go to Amsterdam😘
Jake, you're the only person of whom I could sit and watch a video of 33 minutes, and it feels like 15 min and over too soon, when it's finished.
me too.
Jake I don’t know how you’re such a smart guy but yet you struggle to make some pesto pasta 😂
Red Rose Every genius has a weakness.
Do an exactly same video again please.I really enjoy it.
Dan Carlins Hardcore History is also a great podcast, but you’ve gotta love history, the episodes are 4 plus hours each.
Nice to see that you use the Go Playground too! Yes, it’s helpful!
Hello Jake. Do you know the difference between computer science and engineering (specialization: information and computer engineering) at Cambridge?
We have a similar workflow for our tech and product teams and I personally follow a very similar routine working from home.
Hei man!!!! Water need to boil before put the pasta in!!! Love ❤️ your video but I would never taste your pasta 😂😂
15:39 Oooooh, A C64! I learnt to program on that thing! 😍
I always wait for your vlog and they're getting better and better everyday. Please try to decrease the gap between the uploads ; one video a week maybe.
Stuff you missed (or at least didn't vlog about) in Berlin: 1) Visiting the DDR museum; 2) trying a currywurst.
Podcasts to listen to: 1) Hello Internet; 2) Cortex - Note: Hello Internet is more casual, Cortex is more productivity oriented.
Destinations for future working holidays: 1) Spain (Barcelona or Madrid) - avoid summer; 2) Stockholm - I think its atmosphere matches well with your personality.
please do some videos often maybe one everyweek. love your videos.
Stuff You Should Know is one of my go-to podcasts. They pick a random topic and talk about it (ex: The History of Soda). I'd recommend starting at like episode 30+ because their early episodes are a bit rough imo.
nothing looks fun more than watching you cook Jake :)
Software engineering daily is a great podcast for you Jake
Your monthly eating out bill must be huge haha.
Great vlog as usual! Could you link the article you mention about being more productive? Cheers!
Jake - I think I noticed you using Notion during a previous meeting at Monzo. Is that the company provided note taking app or a personal preference? And any tips or hacks on how it helps your productivity? Thanks.
We also have a local chain called Burgermeister here in San Francisco, though I doubt it's any relation to the one in Berlin.
Jake: "It can get a bit repetitive if I do this every week"
Channel banner: "NEW VIDEOS EVERY FRIDAY!"
I’m in the market for a new laptop, I also wanna be able to dock it to a monitor, so out of interest why do you personally prefer and choose mac over windows ?
the cooking part was hilarious omg haha
Hey Jake, love the content! Would there be any chance of you showing your process for designing solutions for problems as a back end developer? Would be really interesting to see how you go about it at an industry standard :) Even if you have any references at all that would be great! :)
that robot said: "Hallo, hallo! Schön Sie begrüßen zu dürfen."
which translates into: "Hello, Hello! Nice to meet you."
:D
Hey Jake, are you writing API code or client code? Do you guys use react-native for your client code or Swift/Java?
99% invisible is one of my favorite podcasts
You should get a roll of magic whiteboard - they just stick to the wall using static and you can use normal whiteboard pens on them.
"As much as I'd like to be, I'm really not a mornings person". Join the club! 😀
I know this is super old but pro-tip: before traveling to places with poor WiFi where you may need to be working, spin up a "micro" instance on your cloud provider. They cost
@Jake Wright
1, are you guys self-hosting kafka?
2, yeah, Cassandra doesn't support a CDC connector right?
By far the best podcast series that has ever been produced in In The Dark by APM Reports.
it is really fun to see you struggle with cooking and knowing that i would probably burn teh building down
Here are my podcast recommendations:
Desert Island Discs - Really cool interviews by the BBC (Stephen Fry, Brian Cox, Tom Hanks etc)
Joe Rogan podcast - Cool guests also
Feel better live more - Podcast about all aspects of health and how to optimise yourself
The Minimalists
I listen to DND podcast a lot and tbh, it has been so great. The one I am currently listening to is called Not Another DND Podcast, aka NADDPOD.
I am a university student currently studying computer science and watching your videos motivates me to complete my university work so I can get the same/similar opportunities like you do.
What was the song at 11:00? Good video btw really enjoyed it very relaxing, nice to see what industry is like since im going into my final year of uni
Hey Jake do you know where I can find the Cambridge University textbooks online?
1. Let boil the water.
2. Put salt into the water.
3. Put the spaghetti into the water and let them cook.
4. Add the souce you want to the spaghetti.
Finally you can enjoy them! ;)
the thing i loved most about berlin when i visited was the wall art and i like that you've captured that in your video. it's really stunning. 17:13 who sets a meeting for 5pm?! i'm packing up at 5
I have four main podcasts that I listen to.
The Ground Up show (mattdavella.com/podcast) helps with understanding how to organize your life and live it up, The College Info Geek Podcast ( collegeinfogeek.com/cast/) helps with learning more about things I can do to work more efficiently and have a more productive life. The two others are programming podcasts just to learn more about different languages and new concepts. They are, Changelog (changelog.com/podcast) and Command Line Heros (www.redhat.com/en/command-line-heroes)
Hope these help!
Hey Jake, what is your "primary" programming langauge, what you use at work?
Thing everyone is complaining about: the pasta
Thing I’m not complaining about: Jake in his boxers 😂
You would like hello internet I think, my favourite podcast by far
I am a fan of your videos. I am developer and work from home about 10 days a month. How do you deal with distractions like watching youtube video or needing to attend to household chores?
looking nice about working remotely & living in Berlin ! I'm also interested with remote software jobs, something which is not very common in my country. :(
Doesn't your back get curved when you sit like that on floor for hours? Because I apparently have gotten a hunch back over the years and it sucks to deal with it. Have you thought about it? How'd you deal with it?
Yes. A 33 minute video I can watch in parts.
Cool vid man!
I just adore spending time with you Jakey. Shame you didn't find you a local young German fop to take out to dinner, unless you are being faithful to Claudio. There comes a day when it's not as easy to pickup a new friend while on vacation.
You have to start doing videos as long as this one!
jake update pls mate, any new work stuff, new learning etc
I like the notion of asserting the validity of a meal. Did you write a test before eating? When working remotely I guess I prefer continuous (meal) delivery...
I would love that table in my apartment :)
Yay!
If the bubble starts overflowing and you have no hands, blow into it. The cold air will make it shrinks instantly. You can also put a metal spoon or any cold object across the opening of the pan, so when the bubble reaches the cold object it shrinks back in.
Also put some salt into the water when boiling any food will help whichever flavouring you use after get inside the food better.
#TeachJakeHowToCook
when in germany, dont go to netto, aldi or lidl - go to Edeka or Rewe, those are the better supermarkets, and they arent that much more expensive
Where do you get the music for your videos?
Best thing to do (that somehow works) when cooking spaghet is placing a wooden spoon across the top of the open pot. This keeps it from boiling over. It's magic, I swear.
I like jake
Podcasts (kinda educational) that I listen to: BBC 4 In our time and TED Radio Hour by NPR. Also, what is the best IDE for Haskell and Java, I'm going to uni next month and was practising.
Haskell has NO IDEs and has the worst debugging information and compiler errors you'll ever see. We had to use it at University and I will avoid it all costs going forward.
I used Visual Studio Code with the Haskell syntax highlighting plugin, which obviously doesn't do anything aside from colouring your code, but still, it's a step up from notepad.
For Java, IntelliJ is by far the best IDE. JetBrains (the makers of IntelliJ) make some awesome IDEs, and they give the Ultimate version of all of their products for free to students. Highly recommend IntelliJ.
