    You've got the Puerto Rico referenda results backwards. The former was between the choices of changing Puerto Rico's status as a US Territory, with the majority of non-blank ballots calling for a change, and the majority of those favoring statehood, not independence. The latter included options for Independence, Statehood, and continued Commonwealth status, and, again, the 97% majority of voters selected statehood, not independence.

    • @LookBackHistory
      @LookBackHistory  4 года назад +14

      You're 100% right; the votes were for statehood. I even knew that, consciously, but it slipped by in the script.
      This is what happens when I try and cover anything more recent than 20 years ago or so I suppose :/
      I'm going to pin your comment.

      @Spark Puerto Rico shouldn't be a territory of any country unless that's what the people of Puerto Rico want. Whether they want to remain a territory of the US, pursue statehood, pursue independence, or pursue union with some other country, that's their business. They shouldn't be sold, though, that would be the most extreme violation of sovereignty imaginable, treating them as a commodity to be bought and sold instead of a landmass full of people with their own desires.

      Also the cause for such low ballot turn outs is because a good portion of Puerto Ricos history under the US was to crack down on independence movements that included any for of voting rights.

    The native taino population never died out entirely; they were actually the victims of a paper genocide where in the late 1700's it was written that there were no natives left on the island. This was so the Spaniards didnt have to go into the mountainous interior of the island to serach for remaining slaves. Moreover, the native population eventually assimilated into the rest of Puerto Rico's population. About 60-70% of modern Puerto Ricans have around 10%+ of native indigenous Puerto Rican DNA. Wonderful video, I just thought it was missing this important piece

    Ironically, the mighty United States and George Washington needed help from Puerto Ricans to gain their independence. Soldiers from Puerto Rico, under the command of Bernardo de Galvez governor of Louisiana, fought for the American Revolution for the independence of the 13 American colonies, and they also fought at Bunker Hill. Every 4th of July, the Puerto Rico flag should fly next to the American flag in respect to Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 QUE VIVA LA REPUBLICA DE PUERTO RICO. 🇵🇷 The island surrounded by water as trump said, helped in the independence of the United States. The pretenders of democracy have never brought any to Puerto Rico. The United Nations has issued over 40 resolutions telling the United States to grant independence to Puerto Rico immediately, and they have ignored all of them.

    Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky are also commonwealths. Not technically, states.
    ... guess I'll just do my own research. I was looking for a video that makes the four aforementioned "states" more similar to Puerto Rico than the other 46 "states."
