Jaime Alonzo You do realize that the term “Americans” was first used for the country of the United States of America. Before they ever called the New World the Americas.
That’s why when you type America, it always tries to auto-correct. It’s because it has been a nationality for longer than it was used to call continent.

Stephen Jenkins Exactly. Many places do want to become states rather than independence, but even then the people don’t want to be a state and just remain a territory. Places like Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands are the only exceptions to the territory problem as they are allowed to join the military and can vote.
And the only territory/state that even has a small chance of leaving the US is Texas and California, and they are heavily pro-USA themselves.

Thank you for showing this side of America, I am CHamoru, my dad from Guåhan (Guam) and my mom Saipan (CNMI). Both the CNMI and Guam are apart of the Mariana islands and I represent both politically split territories. I want my islands to be reunited again and sovereign. The U.S. can keep their bases because of it’s strategically placed area of the world, but let us decolonize from their rule so that we may sustain ourselves once more. My culture, my people, the CHamoru (Chamorro) are the oldest civilization in Oceania, we were the ones to first navigate the sea, we have been on those islands way before Polynesia was inhabited, and 500 years before the ancient Egyptians created the Pyramids. For more that 4000+ years my people were able to sustain themselves within those 15 small islands of Micronesia, and I believe we can do it once more, without the “aid” of U.S sources. To share a mutual relationship with the U.S. they (like I stated before) can keep their bases that is already throughout the islands, and in return we can use their forces for protection.. strategically placed areas for protection doesn’t sound bad for me. I do however, plan to study this subject along with many other things before I truly make up my mind, but one thing is for sure, I want my people free, and our land to be in our control once more. Feel free to state your ideas or suggestions if you managed to read all this, I’d be interested in reading them! 🤙🏽 🇲🇵🇬🇺

Stephen Jenkins either way it isn’t right, America constantly takes more and more land and cares little of our historic artifacts and our way of life, within our own home. From Spain, to Germany, U.S., Japan, and the U.S. it would be nice to have control of our land that is, rightfully ours. For 4000+ years my people maintained and lived within these 15 small islands without the aid of these big foreign nations. We sure as hell can do it again.

@Zac Heston....I also would like Guam and The Northern Mariana Islands to re-unite,but Free Association Status or Independence would be disastrous for our islands down the road...All the former U.S Possessions that became Independent Nations are not reaping the benefits they thought they would achieve separating from The U.S.
And also Free Association Status is also not very beneficial, which is why many people from the Federated States of Micronesia have moved to Guam,The CNMI or The U.S Mainland for better economic opportunities.
We have freedom being U.S Citizens and remaining as U.S Territories,so much freedom that their are more Chamorro People living in the U.S Mainland than in Guam or The CNMI today.

Sagittarius a true mutual alliance with the US is substantially more better than what we are to the US now, nothing more than people for their military and land for their testing. And with independence, we can make allies with other countries such as Japan, or the Philippines, there is a lot more freedom that comes with that, then what we have now.
If the US wants Tinian, Litekyan, and Pågan for fire ranges and bomb testing, there is nothing in our power to stop them, if we had independence we could say what can and what cannot happen to our land.
We don’t have kick out the US entirely, like I mentioned before, they can still be our allies, they can have bases within our land, but we can tell them how much land, and what to do within our land, which as of right now, we can’t.
In the end it would be a win win, we have our rights to govern ourselves and saftey by allies, they have their strategic location. And with our independence, if we make other allies, we could count on them to help in our time of need, and in return we can produce goods and such or anything really to keep the relationship between countries going.
Independence sounds crazy and scary, and for good reason, but with the right planning and connections anything can be done, for our islands, its people, and our safety.

But because this is not the case, and frankly don't think it will ever will be, I favor complete Independence for PR from the US. Anyways, I people were to look in detail what actually went down during the Spanish-Cuban-US War, and after Act 600 of 1950, the point was that we would be independent in the near future. But, as we all know now, that was all a lie.

If you look at history, Puerto Rico under the Commonwealth status is generally more poorer than when La Real Cédula de Gracia or when the Bonaparte's took of Spain that made Puerto Rico an overseas province. Why? Because in both cases, we had the freedom to negotiate with any Country, propose our own legislations, advance civil liberties, and enriched the country far more than in any other time in our history. We had out own currency, our own banks, fiscal and monetary policy and eventhough we were still a Spanish Colony, and there were a lot of struggles to gain full independence, we were better of then than now. I don't include La Carta Autonómica of 1897 because, thanks to the Spanish-Cuban-US war of 1898, its effect weren't well felt when the US decides to bomb 💣, raid and conquer PR 🇵🇷. So, to summarize, eventhough we have received way more federal funds then when the Spanish we here, we're a lot poorer now than then. Those funds are only used to make PR 🇵🇷 more dependent on them, make us need it so much that we don't produce our own gains.

It is my goal to start a Bernie-Like movement and get all PRs to wake up and smell the roses. We need to speak with one voice only and stop the divisive bickering that keeps us stuck in the same old thing; Estado Libre Asociado, which is neither libre or asociado. According to the UN (United Nations) PR is a commonwealth, however, PR does not fit the definition of commonwealth: the dictionary defines a commonwealth as an agreement made by two sovereign nations for the equal benefit of both countries. I submit the idea that PR must fight for sovereignty and then become a true commonwealth of the US by choice.

The U.S. came to them... Please understand, I'm very sympathetic towards "Dreamers"... But there are many before; still waiting in line... get in the Queue; don't be selfish but support those before and wait your turn...

I concur from this statement: sooner or later Washington has to give them statehood or independence. PR is easy to transition as more progressives fight for their rights, Guam is a shoe in as are a Virgin Islands but American Samoa will be hard to convince Congress.
#2. NACIÓN ES “CONJUNTO DE HABITANTES REGIDOS POR EL MISMO GOBIERNO”.
#3. NACIÓN ES “CONJUNTO NUMEROSO DE PERSONAS QUE RECONOCE UNA HISTORIA PROPIA Y SE IDENTIFICA POR SUS HÁBITOS CULTURALES Y SU PROYECTO COLECTIVO DE VIDA EN COMÚN”.

If you are referring to Hawaii and Alaska, the statement is incorrect .
Those 2 were never in the colonial status of “Unincorporated territory”.
Alaska was purchased from Russia and immediately “incorporated” into the US.
Hawaii we did a coup and also “incorporated “ the islands.
In the Constitution , “incorporated “ means that path to statehood is guaranteed .
Unincorporated means that Congress decides, if ever, the outcome.
This happened because of the Phillippines.
As a US colony, Congress started discussing statehood.
But obviously, having a brown people State was inconceivable and they created the term “Unincorporated territory” to differentiate those that would never become part of the Union.
This was decided by the Supreme Court in 1903....The Insular Cases.

@@Dangic23 Cuba and the Philippines actually. They were both sold alongside Puerto Rico and Guam to the US in 1898.
Cuba was the first to become independent, followed suit by the Philippines, who took a longer route, jumping through several hoops to first attain self-rule, courtesy of the Jones Act to the Tydings-McDuffie Law.
In fact, the Philippine had just declared independence on the year it was sold by Spain, despite the country being in the process of establishing its sovereignty and sending delegations to different nations to attain recognition.
What followed was a four year armed struggle that led to thousands of deaths, national treasures stolen as war booties in a base somewhere in the US mainland and eventual re-colonization.

This topic is very confused and complicated, years ago a puertorrican lived with us sharing a house, bills etc. This person explained to me the way they see this in Puerto Rico and doing a little of research I have found the real "meaning and/or differences" between US Citizen and US National.

We were US Territories after WWII with CNMI, American Samoa, Hawaii..etc know as the TTPI(Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands) till the 80s and 90s depending on where exactly, nations who fought for self determination settled for a compromise with The US through a compact known as the COFA to this day we still have US Military bases and The US blew up 68 atomic bombs in the Marshalls during the Cold War. We have US dollars, US textbooks speak American English, have non immigrant status in America, No green Card, Serve in the military, were pretty much in there. I just think more Americans should learn about us cus we took some Ls for Continental US to be safe. Y’all come here and fight your wars. It’s been 3 wars straight.
