- There’s a growing movement of young people on Guam who envision a sustainable future for the island. They want to end the island's dependency on imported processed foods, which has been ongoing since World War II and has led to high rates of heart disease and diabetes.

I was stationed on Guam in the 70’s. I have yet to meet a friendlier culture of people. They opened their homes and events to us. I was completely unaware of American impact on their culture and way of life. Once again I am ashamed of my country’s policies and impact on the world, but I am in awe of these peoples fight to reclaim their way of life. It is my profound hope that both of us can rescue our cultures by changing our own lives, living by example, and being of service to others.

I am a Chamorro living in the United States deep in the South where nobody understands or knows much about Guam or it's culture. This is extremely important. It is amazingly beautiful and empowering to see people who are taking action AND to see those who are trying to educate the rest of the world about things that are never talked about! Grateful for this video. :) DECOLONIZE GUAM!
Man. As someone from the Philippines who's heard other Filipinos romanticize the idea of being part of the US, I'm glad we got our independence. Our history of colonization under the Spanish and Americans sounds so similar to Guam's, it makes me emotional to hear how Guam's continued colonization is affecting them. I hope they get more independence too.
The American colonization of Guam was the best thing to ever happen to them.

The Philippines isn't better off with the corrupt gov't. I lived in Philippines and the U.S been to the islands in Pacific. I love Philippines, but the gov't is corrupt to it's core. What is good with Philippines though, is the education system. If Philippines keep the education system, with U.S gov't. U.S will basically have the brains of China and India.

I was in the marine corp in Guam from 88 to 90. The local food was the best. I still to this day cook some local dishes.

My grandfather is Chamorro (Mendiola), he came to the mainland United states after being in the military 35 years ago. I never knew much about traditional Chamorro culture or the impact of US colonization because my mother was raised to be a traditional mainland American. I am so happy to see this series talking about the forgotten colony of Guam. Thank you for taking the time to interview the natives and shead light on the social, political, and economic issues they face. This is by far my favorite series on this channel so far, although I admit I might be a little biased Haha 🐟💕😁

My old coworker is Chamorro, and she said that the big reason why spam is so universally loved on Guam is because canned meats will stay good even when weather causes power outages. I can see the appeal of processed trash food when the alternative is going hungry or the risk of food poisoning.
I don't doubt that there's a convenience factor as well. I know that I don't grow, hunt, or gather any of my own food, and I wouldn't know where to start if I needed to. Maybe if we want these remote Pacific islands for strategic military operations, we should at least compensate by building infrastructure that can withstand regularly occurring weather patterns, especially if we're going to keep enforcing the archaic and actually market stifling Jones Act.
That infrastructure is built...on the military bases.
Spam is not bad in appropriate quantities. It's not actually poison

Guam had like 10,000 people when the American's took it in 1898. It's good to appreciate your culture and eat better ... but there is no way this tiny island can support it's current population of 170k people 'living off the land' in a traditional manner.
They'd need to strip the island and build massive farms or something which is just as culturally transformative as what already happened.
If the military base was removed or reduced in size, that would be a big factor. The current population includes military personnel and immigrants to Guam who work for the military personnel. Only 40% of Guam is native Chamorro. Yes, 68,000 is larger than 10,000, but it's certainly not the 170k that needs support.

My dads side of the family is Chamorro, I’m 25%. My grandma doesn’t talk much about her home so I always find it interesting hearing/reading about Guam. Would love to visit there one day. Though my father and I can’t stand spam, my grandma loves it which goes to show the period of time she grew up in.

such similar history as the PHilippines, the love of Spam and US canned goods the military air dropped became part of the local diet, the only difference is corned beef which is loved as much as Spam.

Oh trust me. Corned beef is just as beloved here in Guam. (There are also technically more ethnic Filipinos than chamorros...which is still strange to me and I’m Filipino...and I live here. )

Bubbi hi! Sorry I just got power back 😅 kinda had a typhoon stop by for a bit. But anyways, from my experience and considering the people I’ve interacted with, it’s more of this...strange phenomena where there are those that are proud of it, but i attribute that to how we’ve been brought up (to adhere to Eurocentric views of beauty and what I would call “refinement” as opposed to the “savage” blood of the people who were here first.) and this is true in my Chamorro friends/family and my Filipino friends/family. But nobody hates Spanish people lol not at all.
The more immediate conversations about colonization revolve around America’s involvement in the island as their territory, especially with the military buildup. Because this is happening now, whereas the Spanish days of colonialism kinda feel...far away? If that makes sense?

It's really sad to see how governments poison people with lowest quality of meat and hazardous pesticides but the worst is the crime that has been done to mankind with invention and development of the atomic bomb.
Now I would like to see another video on Iran about how traditional clay fridge houses, fresh water supply through ancient canalization and techniques for air conditioned architecture without use of electricity got destroyed so the west could sell their electric fridges and air conditioning to us. Iran has a major power supply issue and they really have to go back to their roots and depend less on gadgets when they have their own indigenous ways. Dude no one is poisoning them. They choose to eat processed foods. That's their choice. Literally everyone in the world also has that choice but Guam chooses it as a main staple of their cuisine. There has been unethical shit happening to Guam but Spam isn't one of them.

Powerful documentary! When, I was little, my mom would open up a can of SPAM and fry it with chopped potatoes and onions and make burritos for us. She didn't actually buy the SPAM, it usually came in boxes of donated food from a church charity group.

Pia L It's really not that expensive. It's about 6.50 for a gallon of milk and maybe 4 bucks for a container of butter. Sure, more expensive than the mainland, but they were making it out to be stupidly expensive. But I think they should get rid of that act and allow other countries to ship goods in. It would be far less expensive in the long run.

Haf Adai. used to work for the Guam DOE 1974-1978, I love this place and its people. They welcomed me as family. The most beautiful sunsets are on Guam. I stayed with friends on Nimitz Hill. Their backyard was littered with shell casings from World War II. This was only a year or two after the lone Japanese soldier who had hid out in the jungle for 30 years not knowing the war had ended. Even then, people were lamenting how much the culture had changed the way people fed themselves. My friends told me that in the past when someone killed carabou, the whole community gathered to feast on it. Post Spanish, Japanese and American occupation and colonization, refrigeration signaled the end of sharing.

I had a privilege to live in Guam as a child and I really loved it.
Good for you. You have so much sun. There’s no reason why you can’t grow food on the island and have livestock that provide meat and milk, not to mention enjoying the abundance from the ocean. You should be eating better than most people from other countries. I think it’s absolutely fantastic that the young people are helping raise the level of consciousness and shaping the future.

That's the sad reality of it . If life on the island was cheaper, I would not hesitate to move back to Guam. I miss the land, my family, and our traditions . I pray for future prosper for us and our people.
My family is from Puerto Rico, I was born and raised for pretty much my whole entire life in the US. I also lived in PR for about 4 years when I was a kid, when my mother divorced my father and took us there and I go there as much as I can through the years. I love my island. But, Guam reminds me so much of my island. Pretty much all the same issues, anyone from guam in the comments look up PR and all of it's health issues stemming from colonialism and you will see that we are cousins in the fight to live a healthy life. I think that Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico should hook up and fight the Jones Act together. Join in Voices so that it may be stronger, louder, with more and conviction.

I worked in Guam from 1992-1999,chammorros love spam,they called it chammorro steak.
I heard that Spam was so popular in Hawaii, but I didn't know that the same was true of Guam as well. They are right to go back to the old way of eating and get away from the fast food idea of eating. Once that happens the people will live longer and be healthier too.
Its really sad seeing how the indigenous culture, way of life, and diet of the Pacific Islanders has been either damaged or destroyed.

One of my best friends was from Guam and goddamn if he wasn't one of the most stand up guys I've ever known. He moved to NYC and while we still do chat online I miss him in person.

I was born on Guam on a naval installation in the 50s. It makes me sad to hear these stories and I am so sorry your peoples land was taken away from them. And I pray that you get your island back. My mother loved Guam very much and she loved the people. She used to always call me her little Guam Manian.🙏🏼🇬🇺🥰

I’m from Puerto Rico and Guam is going thru the same thing as we do here. The Jones act, here is $6.00 for a gallon of milk; everything is expensive, more expensive than the mainland, USA. Cancer is a big role here because of the spanish american war, the island/city of vieques is exactly like guam. The US army took over the entire island, kicked everyone out of the east side of the Island/city of vieques just to test bombs and when they had no land left and moved everyone back and bombed the west side. We feel the same pain The people of Guam 🇬🇺 are going thru. Our culture is gone as well, taíno Indians don’t exist do to spanish and Americans killing them.... this is just sad. We need justice!

that jones act is a killah! here on oahu, hawaii, buying milk from a farmer on a different island is much more expensive than buying milk from the continental U.S. you would think it'd be cheaper. all these U.S territories (american samoa, guam, puerto rico, u.s. virgin islands, U.S mariana islands) and hawaii would benefit a lot if they would get rid of the jones act or at least to amend it. if i order/buy something from japan, they would pass us, go straight to cali and then from cali re-route and come back to us here in hawaii. and we as consumers have to foot the bill for the extra expenses (fuel, crew, etc.) smh. why not come straight here? mind you, the distance from hawaii to cali is about 2500 miles. so about 5000 miles worth of fuel and crew time, extra passed on to consumers. it's one of the main reasons why everything is so expensive here cause 90% of everything we have/need/want, needs to be shipped in. heeelllllppp lol.
My mom, aunts, grandma and grandpa lived on a piece of land in Hungary where they had their own cattle and grew their own fruit trees and vegetables. There were no supermarkets. Recently, grandma’s house was torn down and somebody built a bunch of shops and a restaurant in its place.

It’s hard to fight for independence. Especially trying to fight it from the US. The US can’t keep their hands off of anyone’s land sadly. The money they have, the much power they can get and keep. Same thing with Hawaiʻi. Hawaiʻi loves spam and American fast food. Mostly 99.9% of our food comes from the mainland. So it’s gonna be hard trying to provide food, clothing and shelter for yourself and family if you’re trying to fight for independence. But I do support!

In Okinawa, spam also popular there. Local onikiri is made of spam coz US base is on the island.
And it's even more weird than Guam as Guam is still US but Okinawa is Japanese island and yet spam is popular dish unlike elsewhere in Japan.
