  • The U.S. territory of Guam has a unique history as one of the longest-running colonies in history. How did it get this way?
    Watch the 2nd part to the series here: • Should U.S. Territorie...
    Guam has been colonized by the Spanish, occupied by the Japanese and militarized by the Americans. But the history of its indigenous Chamorro people goes back even further. AJ+ went to Guam to speak with indigenous Chamorro people about the island's complicated past.

    Growing up Chamorro, I didn't know any of this. Our history was mostly focused on the Japanese occupation, and the rift it caused between the Chamorros in Guam and CNMI. I was raised to be loyal and patriotic, that the United States is the greatest nation on the face of the earth. I even joined the military. When you wake up to all the wrongs perpetrated against your own people, it is easy to be overcome by rage. But, I've had a long education, seen the world, met so many people from different walks of life, and honestly, I see our history as just another example of humanity being trash to its own. I hope that we can right those wrongs without blaming their descendants. I hope that all of us can accept the past, acknowledge those mistakes, correct them, learn from them, and prevent them from happening again. We should be the generation that ends the cycle. We should know better.

    I loved Guam, I was at Andersen AFB from 4/1980 till 5/1981 in the USAF. I met a lot of farmers there as I am from Southwest Virginia and farming was my way of life. I rented cars and drove all over Guam and met a lot of people. The older people were so nice and would give you anything they had. Guam has been shut out by the US Government and still so today. I love Chamorro's and still do today. Great warm folks. Loved Andersen AFB. 62 now, Still farming but will remember Guam as the best place in the world. The nice people, The fun times. If I had the money I would die there. Don't have the money. My wife died last year from cancer. I will suck it up and remember Guam as the best place on earth. God send to everyone.

    I knew nothing about Guam besides it's common colonial history, but after living here for a few years, I can tell you, it is very unfair to the locals that some of their land isn't even accessible to them. I was not aware about the situation in Guam, but I’m not surprised. The US government basically pulled the same stunt near me with Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. They promised to give the land back to the families they took it from when it was decommissioned and instead turned it over to a couple towns for redevelopment. I worked with one of the descendants of the original landowners and she told me how they were screwed. It’s heartbreaking and sickening.

      The government was going to kick us out of our home in north Georgia citing eminent domain for a highway going to nothing but vacation homes on a couple of lakes years ago. Their highest offer was $25k while property like it was going for at least three times that. The tax assessment for it at that time was $70k. We fought. Had we not, we would've ended up in run down government housing in town and on welfare while a bunch of rich bastards enjoyed their smooth ride over our property to theirs. Tensions got so bad that violence was a real issue. Got so bad they called in extra security to the commission meetings when the project was being discussed. We all pulled together and stopped the project.

    While Guam eventually got their birthright citizenship, American Samoa on the other hand is the only US territory where the people are US NATIONALS rather than citizens (because of that same old law regarding the Chamorros). The only way you can be born a citizen there is if your parents are US citizens. Because they're "non-citizen nationals" rather than citizens, they cannot qualify for jobs stateside like firefighters, public school teachers, paramedics, and police officers. They can't run for office either. Sai Timoteo, an American Samoan who was running in 2018 for Hawaii's House of Reps, was disqualified due to the decades-old ruling that has barred American Samoans from public office.
    They have tried to fight this. A district court in Utah ruled in favor of the American Samoan community stateside that they should be considered citizens. However, Congress doesn't. Because this decision was appealed by the US federal government at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver. Even representatives of the American Samoa government itself appealed, because their reasoning is that birthright citizenship would "ruin" the culture. Lots of American Samoans have proudly served in the US military...and yet they're not treated by the government as equals.

    As an American I'm appalled. All people living in our terrorities should be considered as full citizen equal to those on the mainland. Lands took away should be returned or compensated at fair price with interest then some.
    Furthermore those people should be allowed to determine whether if they'd like to continue the status quo, become a state, or become independent. If they choose independence US should support them and there should be some kind of binding agreement for US to support their independence and invest into their infrastructure and economy or whatever locals decide is in their best interests.
    I have no desire to see my country and government to continue exploiting people in terrorities as well as those of the First Nations.

    If the people of Guam wish to become independent, then they have a right to do so. While states do not have the right to secede, territories do. It has been done in the past. The last territory to do this was Palau, which became an independent republic in 1994. Personally, though, I think that Guam is better of as a territory of the United States. Independence would mean no more checks from the US government, and American business is important to the economy. In fact, Department of Defense installations, together with tourism and locally owned businesses, make up the largest portion of Guam’s economy. There are certain benefits enjoyed under American administration.

      No person exists that doesnt know what USA does ,and how it has caused trouble all over the world ,only to satisfy the few greedy rich who decide who lives and who dies .Only because US citizens gave them the power...
      But i guess this is all irrelevant ,since we have peace..And they have hell ,but we dont care ,we dont see them ,they are thousands of miles away .If P.Rico doesnt get a help fromm US ,imagine what happens to these guys..In the pacific a small island ,depended on USA army .I d hate to have to live there ..And now probably the original inhabitants hate to be there too..Unless of course somehow ,US army buggers off (maybe Trump saving some pennies,so he can enrich his own pocket,will withdraw them from Guam and everywhere else.. )I know its not going to happen ,thieves always return to the crime scene..Especially if there is more wealth to be grabbed..

    Interesting how significant facts were omitted from this video, probably because the filmmaker was too ignorant to inquire about them. Chammorros are full U.S. Citizens and can vote for President the second they arrive in any U.S. state - just like any white guy from the mainland who CAN'T vote for President when he's living in Guam.
    As far as the land issue goes, Guam real estate was comparatively valueless until the 1980s when the Japanese tourism industry started to boom. There are more Chamorros living in California than on Guam and most of those families left in the 1960s and they sold their family land just to pay for their tickets to San Francisco on Pan Am!

    Together with other Pacific islanders, Filipinos and Chamorros share indigenous cultural and linguistic and colonial histories. Thousands of years before Magellan accidentally landed on Guam, their common ancestors most probably lived in mainland Asia. Sailors, farmers and fishermen, they spoke a common mother tongue or related languages.
    But for reasons only imagined, perhaps famine, warfare, or illness, or a combination of these reasons, they migrated south to Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and sailed east to the Mariana Islands and other islands in the Pacific Ocean. Separated by natural boundaries and time, their once common language and culture became distinct. And yet, cultural and linguistic similarities remain that point to a common Austronesian / Malayo Polynesian ancestry in spite of the absence of written records of contact and trade prior to the accidental arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.

    • @k-studio8112
      @k-studio8112 Год назад +3

      I don't know how Guam lost the Spanish language but here in the Philippines, one reason is actually because the Americans force-feed English language to the local population and banned them from using it. But Spanish was one of our official languages aside from English and Filipino up until the 70's.

    • @tedellis5471
      @tedellis5471 Год назад +4

      You can read the actual Spanish governors' journals from the 1500s to late 1800s online for free. In those, you will discover that the Spanish went to great lengths to keep Filipinos from learning Spanish. However, Filipinos were not deaf or stupid so they picked up many commonly used Spanish words and incorporated them into their languages, albeit many are transformed due to the way they were heard.

    So sad to hear this. If you can serve in the military but you can't vote it's almost like your a second class citizen.
    The people native to Hawaii are going through a similar problem. They are not getting compensated for the land that was taken from them.
    At one time African Americans went through a similar situation. They can join the military. Fight and risk their life for someone else's agenda. But they couldn't enjoy the same rights as the ruling class.
    And some people wonder why there is such turmoil in this country.

    This inferior status as a territory was why there was such a strong push for statehood in Hawaii after World War II, which finally happened in 1959. During WWII, Hawaii was run essentially by a military dictatorship from Dec. 1941 to the summer of 1944, under which normal US citizenship rights were suspended under martial law. And just as described here, civilian property was condemned by the military as well. It was paid for, but in some cases it was literally just seized or occupied first. My family too lost a substantial amount of property that was condemned by both US Navy and the US Army in both World War I and then World War II.

    My people and my island have had our culture, language, and indigenous religion stolen and replaced by the US. The argument of being "better off economically" is besides the point. If Russia "aquired" the US, destroyed and replaced your culture and language with theirs, yet the US becomes better economically as a Russian territory you'd all call colonialization, as it is. The Americans have no problem destroying the Chamorro people's independence as long as they can make a quick buck. Long live the revolution.

      Aren't you also forgetting the 300+ years of Spanish colonization? By the time the Americans arrived, we had already lost much of our original identity as a distinct people. Our culture and language had changed dramatically with the introduction of the Spanish language and customs, Catholicism, and the gradual adoption of other islander cultures, especially from the Filipinos.

    My child was born on Guam, and forever, Guam will hold a special place in my heart. I am not part of the military, but I know the military provides a lot of food and butter on many family's plates. However, it is my understanding too if you are non-military working on the base the pay is poor just minimum wage. Guam is a very expensive little island, because the local government is not allowed to bring any fruits from the Philippines and or Japan without paying heavy import charge this keeps many families struggling to pay for food and or are forced to leave Guam to survive beyond poverty. Shameful, it is.
