Thank You!
Ted Febo I agree ☝🏽
Ted Febo gracias
Thank you
True, that's why they are called Costa Rican as opposed to Puerto Rican.
Rico of course meas rich.
El es rico = He is rich.
Ella es rica - She is rich.
It surprises me how many people in the US don’t know that we are US citizens
Telling them that would make the USA look hypocritical since the USA ideal is self-determination. Being a colonizer of other people goes against that principle.
How could they know when their government goes out of its way to keep it hush hush?
Non citizens aren't allowed to enter the USA without a passport. Puerto Ricans need no passport.
It's stupid bt legally you are lol
Radrook Radrook well we don’t need a VISA to enter, because we are citizens, just like any other American citizens of the USA.

Most of the companies fled.
And the economy started the decline since that date.

The 936 was a section in the IRS law.
Congress is the only one with power to change this.
The President only signs it.
We just had new changes in the IRS approved by Congress and signed by Trump in December 2017.
Or who do you think implemented 936 in PR, and who abolished it?
Dangic23 guys stop arguing about politics if you are not a politician. The goverment does things that we dont understant...and then we blame this president and the other president. It is all politics. For example Trump was not the president in 1996 when according to the talker a lot of companies fled. The status has never changed since 1901.
PR is still in the books of law, an unincorporated territory of the US.
The commonwealth naming is just that....a name.
The territorial clause has never changed.
The Status of PR has not changed since 1508, or did you forget we were a Spanish colony/territory before being ceded to the US and that we are still a colony/territory??
The US sends to PR every year about $5 Billion in federal aid and programs.
The US extracts from PR every year about $70 billion to its coffers.
No status will change in the island until it’s no longer profitable for the US to maintain possession of the colony.
Dangic23 it’s not a colony
Luisito Santiago
Legal definition in US law books is “Unincorporated territory of the US”
Law says there is no intent to ever annex to the mainland.
The only non colonial feature in the island is that they select their own Governor.
So it’s a quasi colony.
Dangic23 The time to change status has come.
Ulysses TitaniumLakitu64
Congress will not move until it’s no longer beneficial to the mainland.
Recent example....When Hurricane María devastated PR, there was a cry to finally change the Jones Act in reference to the merchant marine.
Perfect opportunity to do so, and have free commerce trade with the rest of the world.
Well, merchant marine lobbyists swarmed DC and shut down all talks.
cornskid
The US citizens living there can’t vote for statehood or any other political status.
It’s prohibited by the Constitution.
Only Congress has the power to decide.
The Constitution of the United States, Article 4 Section 3, provides: “The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States(…)”
Puerto Rico was ILLEGALLY ceded to the United States by Spain. Under the terms of the Constitutional Autonomy agreement between Spain and Puerto Rico in 1897, Spain could not modify the status of Puerto Rico without the consent of the Puerto Rican Parliament. In other words, it was no longer legally their possession to cede to the United States.
Failed to mention that since 1917, anyone born in Puerto Rico is a US citizen by birth. Since that same year, more people were drafted into the US Armed Forces just like any other State. Also failed to mention, that in 1916, the Congress of Puerto Rico asked the US for Independence and was denied, and the following year, the people were force into becoming US citizen. By the way, Native American heritage in Boriken goes back to over 3,000 years.

PR became a Commonwealth in 1952, not 1948.
There’s no mention of the fact that the people of Puerto Rico voted to become a state several times but US Congress overrode that vote and voted to keep it a commonwealth.
I think it will become the 51st state. DC will stay as a federal district permanently probably, but I do believe Puerto Rico will become a state eventually.
You have a Mistake in 2012 Puerto Rico have a plebisite and 66% vote for statehood. In 2017 again have a plebisite and 97% Vote for statehood...
But you have to take into account the low voter turn out.
Manuel De J Lopez Alamo el 23% del electorado fue a votar, o sea la estadidad sufrió un duro golpe, ya que los lideres del PNP no lograron movilizar a la gente para participar de un plebiscito no vinculante.
Manuel De J Lopez Alamo that plebicite was made by morons and was fraudulent
USA is bankrupt anyway. The GAO report terminated any chances for statehood definitively. Take a look at it and you will understand that any promises for statehood is a lie
They can vote for statehood or independence until they are green in the gills. It makes no difference until USA congress decides. Please note that their very docile acceptance of such treatment isn't considered an ideal American characteristic. It is perceived by non-Puerto-Rican Americans and by the rest of the world as a character flaw.

I love how you critize Spain for the use of slaves in Puerto Rico, yet the USA did exactly the same, if not worse, for even more timw
Truth shall Prevail The "history" displayed here was severely over-simplified. Way too much. And you are correct, as a matter of fact the treatment of slaves was worse and for a longer time in the states than in P.R.
First slaves were Asians in Jamaica when it was England
Actually the Anglos were far more cruel than the spanish and the black slave population was not that big. Many of the black people in PR today are actually decendants of slaves from the lesser antilles that were grant freedom and land by Spain if they reached the island and became catholic
Puerto Rico is the most white and amerindian (taino) island of the entire caribbean
The DNA proof Anglo are the most diverse group in Europe as mix and their origin is African. After the Catholic Church , the second genocide was the one that took place in New Spain in 1785 now USA and Canada by the British. Also people ignore the fact that France has the biggest minority that are Africans.
Also Ponce massacre was an event that took place on Palm Sunday, 21 March 1937, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, when a peaceful civilian march turned into a police and soldiers of the U.S. shooting in which 19 civilians and two policemen were killed, and more than 200 civilians wounded. Most of the dead were reportedly shot in their back.
The Río Piedras massacre occurred on October 24, 1935, at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. Local police officers under U.S. command confronted and opened fire on supporters of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. Four Nationalist Party members were killed, and one police officer was wounded during the shooting.

Originally the island was called San Juan and the capital was Puerto Rico, cartographers switched the names at some point mistakenly. If you think about it, it doesn't make sense to call the entire island a port. Borinquen is pronounced bor EE ken, not bor EE kwen. Do a little research before doing an educational video.
This is not an educational video. It’s only supposed to make the Americans feel did they have been saving the world for centuries.

Puerto Rico voted for statehood twice. 61% of the vote in 2012 and 97% in 2017. History Channel should update this video to clarify that and be accurate!
How come after these polls we have not become a state yet?
These polls aren't usable. No one voted

To this day the U.S. government is against the people of Puerto Rico, they are now protesting cause of a curry or governor who was installed by the federal government. Puerto Rico is poorly treated by our government, it should not become a state Spanish would no longer be spoken as well as losing its cultural identity.
It has its good and its bad becoming a US Citizen. Some other poor Latin Amer countries would of wished to have become a US citizen.
Spain didn't care about their colonies either. Even if Puerto Rico became a state they would still speak Spanish there. The downfall of the language has more to do with more youth living in the U.S. that speak English more so over Spanish and may choose to understand English rather than learn Spanish if it becomes less and less spoken in the household.
@@malva6176 not everyone wants to become a US territory let alone a colony, you’re not a state. Outside of San Juan it’s pretty under developed in many areas.
@@itzamia not did the US care for Guam or Liberia
@@michaelelguerito8272 I agree, at least in Puerto You have the privilege to be born under the US rights and be a US citizen. Unlike Latin America.
