Visit some of the communities where bomba dancing is most vibrant, from the Santurce area of San Juan, to Loíza, the bastion of Afro Puerto Rican culture across the Rio Grande. Meet Jesús Cepeda, a member of the family that has kept this culture alive through the latter half of the 20th century, and community organizer Maricruz Rivera Clementa who runs the Corporación Piñones Se Integra (www.copipr.com/) dedicated to preserving Afro Puerto Rican culture and teaching the next generation of bomba dancers.

As someone of West African decent, I love seeing Africa's influence on so much of the western world. Africa's influence on Latin America, the Caribbean, and the US cannot be understated.
It is more than influence. Our ancestors came from Africa. We are African.
They are from Congo not west Africa
Us, Caribbean Latinos, have pride and represent our African heritage, Americans represent for clout.

As a black woman of Cameroonian and Nigerian heritage, having grown up my whole life outside of the motherland I really struggled to understand and feel connected to my identity. Watching this video I am in awe and admiration of how your beautiful community keep the spirit and soul of our ancestors alive despite all the systemic and racist attempts to dim your light and devalue your heritage. Congo (Kongo) people had the largest influence on Afro Latin America.

Black Americans are NOT Native Americans, you all are mostly the descendants of the slaves that came from

According to your logic, then the Europeans are also Native Americans because they arrived to the Americas way before you all were brought here! You do can claim Native American ancestry or heritage if you do a DNA test and have indigenous DNA, though, because some of the slaves in the USA and Canada did mix with the indigenous people, but that doesn’t mean Black Americans are Native American because “they have been here for 500 years” 🥴. And let me give you another piece of knowledge: Central and South America, and The Caribbean Islands ARE PART OF THE AMERICAS. Being a Native American doesn’t only apply for indigenous in the USA, and there are still indigenous tribes in South America, in Mexico and in Canada, who are ACTUALLY Native Americans. And FYI, people from the Caribbean and Latin America have more Native American blood and heritage than maybe you. Why? Because our indigenous people actually mixed with the Spanish and the African, and that was the NORM, not just a minority like it happened in USA, Canada and Haiti. Contrary to the French and British, the Spaniards actually mixed with the indigenous and their heritage is still in our DNA, which is why we are called mixed or “mestizos”. Mexico and Peru for example, the average Mexican has 56% indigenous in their DNA, and in Peru, they have 45% indigenous in their DNA. And those statistics are for regular people who doesn’t belong to any indigenous tribe. We are all mostly mixed. And it happened the same in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Dominican Republic. The average Puerto Rican has between 15% and 20% Indigenous. Some even more than that depending on the region. I did the test and I got 21% Taino and my husband 26%. My great grandma was a Taina… Sorry but you are literally in no place to come here lecturing me about being a US citizen, being an American and actually having indigenous ancestry, you 🤡.

From West Africa specifically Yoruba tribe in Nigeria, GA or Ewe tribe from Ghana, Togo and Benin Republic, Cameroon and Mende tribe in Sierra Leone. All these tribes are descendants from OYO empire of Yoruba tribe which extends to different part if West Africa. Some Yorubas tribes are in Gabon, Ivory Coast etc

@Your thoughts Not mine Yeah it's an African dance, but kid it's an African dance that is expressed by Puerto Ricans in the island. It would eventually evolve by grabbing different elements from the different backgrounds in the island, incorporating them and would later become known as la bomba puertorriqueña and it is one of the traditional dances of the island along with la plena, which is another dance and was influenced by la bomba. The dance is apart of the culture in the island and that's one of the things that makes the island what it is. Real Boricuas aren't worried about skin color cause they know that at the end of the day our ancestors are just the same as our neighbors' whether that be if they came from Africa, Spain, Borikén, etc. We recognize the differences of how each Puerto Rican looks when we come in contact with one another or we see on tv, but that doesn't change a single thought in our mind about that person cause we know we are all children of la isla de Borikén. Those that do think negatively on their own because of color are not helping the island. So if you're rican, regardless of color, and you want to dance la bomba, no one in the island is gonna tell you that you can't, they will be more than happy if you were to reconnect to your roots than ignore them and most importantly, respect and understand the meaning behind la bomba.

I really enjoyed this video. I’m a black man who grew up in the Bronx, NY. And has had the pleasure of visiting P.R. And he the time of my life. With a former girlfriend who is Puerto Rican. Brought back good memories, of the island and my old neighbor.
I watched this to better understand a lesson taught at school today and I am blown away that even after hundreds, thousands of years ago even that these amazing men and women, their parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren all work so hard to preserve African and Puerto Rican culture and keep the beautiful Bomba music alive. These people are truly an inspiration to me and I strive to feel the joy that these beautiful folks feel while dancing.
It’s not “African and Puerto Rican” it’s Puerto Rican because our culture IS synonym to African , Taino and forcibly Spanish.

Although I may be white passing (I have a yellow skin tone)(my mothers is a dark skin from Ecuador and my father is yellow skinned like me from PR and I just wanted to learn more about bomba since I REALLY DO love music and something abt bomba makes me feel alive

When I was a kid on the island back in 1982, once the sun went down, we danced bomba outside and inside all weekend long. Memories. I loved playing the tambourine and the maracas
My mother is Puerto Rican (my father being Nicaraguense) and I’ve always wanted to touch base with her culture. It’s been one of my childhood dreams to be a folk dancer and seeing you all dance touches my heart in ways I can’t even explain. It’s as though I long to be one with my culture. The dances and drumming are of Africa! I am 1/2 Dominicano (my father) and my father always told us to be proud of the African in us, that's why I don't understand why some hispanics (no matter which island they are from whether Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba,etc )try to deny that, too many will claim the indian, the european but will do anything rather than claim the African! Be proud of the African in yourself, that is the strongest blood you carry, those are the ancestors that survived the most horrendous treatment yet survived to bring some of the strongest of descendants to the world!

The Drumming and the dances were left in puerto rico by our ancestors and sounds are also mixed with the Taino instruments of their dances. I was born and raised in puerto rico my mother's family are black puerto ricans the stories were passed on to us from our mother's to each generation in our family. don't know what latinos you have met every puerto rican I have met are proud of their roots.

So beautiful! You know each one of us humans regardless our country on this Earth we all have African DNA more or less. Africa is the motherland of humanity since millions of years ago. Why so much division and denial from some folks? This unites all of us as one race! I can't wait to visit PR in the near future hopefully
