      Axis I am not from America either... it just seem shortsighted & suicidal to think such policies are sustainable... and the mainland seem to be suffering from a softer version of this. Huge debts and the financial market basically unchallenged. The differences is only the mainland still have enough assets to waste away for now, and they actually have the power to directly confront this but lack willingness to do so.

This was like 6 months after that hurricane.. there was still power out, small structures in ruin, and some large debris at the beach. The Uber guy was asking where all the mainlanders were. Puerto Rico has had so much hardship and I didn’t know how bad the government mishandled PRs wealth on top of it. I hope more tourists, immigrants and visitors come back. And we should be prepared to help them as much as we can, we have no problem sending billions to other countries, not our own territory.

      To be clear, that "key board player" is 3 Tony Award Winning orchestrator/arranger/musical director/conductor Alex Lacamoire, whom Lin has collaborated with since his first(and only other) Broadway show In The Heights(along with co orchestrator Bill Sherman) in 2008.
      This is the guy who provided the multi-sound patches and string arrangements that won him the Tony Award for Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, and (during the time of this episode) was the First Keyboard/Conductor during the premiere and first few months of Hamilton on Broadway!
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Lacamoire
      Furthermore, he was also the pianist who played for Lin's performance of the early drafts of Hamilton(consisting of "Alexander Hamilton" and "Hurricane") at the White House in 2009!

    Watching that commercial made to entice businessmen to move to P.R hurt... I’m Puerto Rican and when I lived there, I didn’t feel safe. The power and water are always going out, even when there’s seemingly no reason, and during New Years, you have to duck and stay indoors cause you sometimes can’t tell the gunshots apart from the fireworks. And the school system usually doesn’t include English unless the school is private, despite us being a U.S territory. The island is not ok, especially not after Hurricane Maria.
    Also, I absolutely hate the fact that many Americans don’t actually know that Puerto Ricans are also Americans. I’ve had people ask me if I have two citizenships: One for P.R and one for the U.S. How can our Island expect help when most mainland-Americans aren’t even aware of us being part of the U.S?

My dad and his 7 siblings and his mom thought that with hard work they can make a good living for themselves. They thought wrong. They found out that this country is extremely corrupt and the people here are extremely racist. My dad didn't know what the word Niger meant or what spick meant he soon found out the hard way. Because in Puerto Rico there is no racism and against anybody, Americans brought that to Puerto Rico. I am proud to call myself a Puerto Rican if you're not you're not a true Puerto Rican!

      Maybe you want to enlight your friends with this information:
      US monies to Puerto Rico
      1. $2.7 Billion for roads, and Title I programs.
      2. $1.9 Billion for food stamps, Medicaid, section 8, WIC, and so on.
      3. $13 Billion for veteran pension, regular government pension, unemployment, and so on
      This adds up to 17.6 billion
      Puerto Rico Monies to the US
      1. $22.6 Billion for the biggest joke in the world every imported product to Puerto Rico has to come through Jacksonville, and that is how much the US makes on it. We don't have a free port.
      2. $34 Billion for major corporation's capital gains paid to the US government and not kept by the PR government
      there are other ones but just these two is over $56 million. REALLY how many states give that to the US government.

    You want to know something interesting about the whole round-ice-cube thing? It's not actually entirely pretentious, there actually _is_ a scientific advantage to them. Say you take a sphere of a one-inch radius, the volume calculates to about 4.2 cubic inches. A cube of the same volume would be about 1.6 inches on a side. (There's some slight rounding variance here, I'm just doing quickie math.) However, the surface area is the key. The cube would have a surface area of 15.36 square inches; the sphere would have a surface area of 12.57 square inches. By exposing less surface area of the frozen ice to the liquid drink, the ice melts slower, resulting in your drink not being watered down as fast. ...Of course, it can still be _presented_ pretentiously, but it's at least a mathematically sound concept.

    I'm a Puerto Rican who lives here in the Island. I love my island, I love my history, my people, my language, my roots. But I also love the fact that we are also U.S. Citizens. We've fought in every single war since WWI under the Stars and Stripes. We've contributed to American modern culture. We are everywhere in the states. We are your teachers, lawyers, doctors, judges, lawmakers, mayors...
    I want Congress to recognize that we, Puerto Ricans have the right to decide whether we want to be a state of the Union or not.
    Personally I favor statehood, but I know some other people favor independence, or free association (Ex. Palau, Micronesia).
    I know that we don't have a good economy, but many, MANY of us are professionals and we want to contribute as much as we can.

    It's sad that John Oliver cares more about the pain and lives of us citizens than most of the mainstream media. I know he isn't a journalist, but journalists could learn something from him and start covering important stories that don't get enough attention

    • @lunayen
      @lunayen 6 лет назад +6

      Juliet Deane
      There are a multitude of journalists who cover a lot of stories that aren't considered mainstream. However, we as people are bombarded with so much information on a daily basis it's getting hard to keep up.
      I'm sure that if you Googled "Puerto Rico crisis" you'll get a ton of results.
      Plus, there are plenty of people who file the island's problems under the "not my problem" category in their drawers. You think that they'll care enough to read up on anything written by journalists?

    • @maryanneslater9675
      @maryanneslater9675 6 лет назад +8

      You are both right. There are other journalists who can do an in-depth story but they don't have the audience and platform that John does, and many don't have his story-telling knack. He can make things easy to understand without dumbing it down too far to please the producers. Which is a huge problem with so many American shows.
      When I watch American shows on history and science, I think, holy fuck, do the producers believe that their viewers lose their memory every time they get up during a commercial to pee or get a snack? They stretch 15 minutes of information into 45 minutes with overly dramatic music. John crams a two-week course into 20 minutes with jokes and a song!

    Puerto Rico and the Territories, by US law, is currently the only place in the observable universe where American citizens cannot vote for President.

    • @VodShod
      @VodShod 4 года назад +1

      I do believe there are more places for instance if a US citizen is in new york and they get 3 misdemeanor like manspreading in an empty train at 1 am, thus taking up too many seats, then they are then considered a felon and cannot vote. Since felons are not allowed to have their voices heard.
      A good way of making sure your party stays in power is to find ways of making laws that turn people who vote for the other party into felons, for instance making it a felony to have in your possession an addictive substance that the majority of people using said substance are likely to vote for the opposing party. Like Marijuana and the Black population.

      +Worros While paying their debt would be a fine gift, that alone wouldn't solve the problem the of getting PR back in financial shape again. That would be solved by closing the loopholes and amending the laws that allow Big Business to operate there for free, (tax-wise) in addition to a whole host of other matters. Business and Gov't treated the PR like a tax haven, but now the people (as always) are the ones footing the bill. What John described reminds me of the unequal treaties that Imperialist nations, such as the US and England, foisted on China in the 1800s- the Chinese response was the Boxer Rebellion.

      I know man. I know. However, as you said, it's again people who are hit the hardest (as it is always the case in these situations). It is people I would be looking to help (if possible). How things would need to be done in the future in order to maintain stability is certainly a larger issue and one that I am not really qualified to address. I agree with you 100% but if I had the power to do something about it right now you can bet your life that I would.

      As genuine and good-intentioned as Oliver is in this segment, there are a few things no one on television is allowed to say. We came close to crossing that invisible line during Peace for Vieques in 2000-01, but in American media, it's forbidden to call Puerto Rico a colony. The UN passed a law criminalizing the practice of colonies sometime in the '50s, but the US and UK still have colonies in the Caribbean and elsewhere. What does shock me as a Puertorican is how many of my fellow islanders are actively blinding themselves to this crisis, and instead focusing on statehood or independence when it doesn't matter what we think about that issue until the US gives us the "right" to even discuss it. I want to be free of these chains, the debt is manufactured, and I wish Puerto Rico was a free nation, like America after the Declaration of Independence.

      It's only natural, of course. The whole time he was waiting backstage for his cue to perform, possibly even the ride there, the ride back, they were probably hanging together. It would be horribly inconsiderate not to introduce the ONE other person with whom he's performing. I mean it's not an orchestra, just one guy. But you're right, many people have long lost that decency in the entertainment industry.
      I tried to catch his name, Alex Laca... & I couldn't figure out what the rest was. I came searching through the comments to see if someone mentioned it. Thank you for that. :)
