DS is confident it can take a slice of the lucrative premium hatchback pie with the sharp-looking new DS 4. This new hybrid family car has a big mountain to climb to persuade punters away from the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class default choices.

Get one in Performance Line trim and it’s a really good Golf GTE, A250e AMG rival. What a lovely car.
Just a couple of things i want to say.First, hats off to the French for keeping their car industry in French hands. The British did have the upper hand many moons ago but decided, sadly,to sell, sell, sell.Second,i still think even this DS will lose value a lot but that is not so bad because you will be able to buy them used in a couple of years at a cracking price.
Spot on. That's how I managed to finally get myself a DS5.
Hopefully someday, I'll be driving one of these beauties....
The best DS by far.Gorgeous car! Inside and out
I loved this review, he's proper honest, he talks as he thinks as well so it's genuine.
That's a really good-looking thing! With regards BMW, I think they've really lost their way as most of their current stock of cars are really quite ugly.
Agreed. They all look like Chinese knock-offs of BMWs from ten years ago. No design progress at all. I3 and I8 excluded - these are brilliant, but ten years old.
I agree , but I think it’s the BMW grilles that are not in proportion & ruin the look of their cars . This DS4 however looks fantastic .
Taste is subjective
I'm glad BMW lost its (ugly) ways
μετάφραση στα Ελληνικά παρακαλώ
I appreciate the efforts to regain some of that old Citroen originality in terms of design and technological feats
I find it's tacked onto a normal car whereas back in the day it used to be an original car, original thinking. This seems more like a design exercise. But maybe they'll get there. Nothing wrong in going for comfortable ride.
@@GadgetyMV yeah I agree. Sadly I think the days of over engineering are over. The accountants are in charge now 😟
@@ThrottleBody Indeed.
@@DonDixit Everything 🤣
@@GadgetyMV problem is that kind of way of doing things is one of main reasons Citroën went bankrupt. Also nowadays costs of developing new cars keep going up and up, so there's more platform sharing going on than ever, and over last few decades automakers keep on merging together into bigger conglomerates or going bankrupt.
When Steve likes the car that I'm really fond of, then it is no brainer.
Bet you £100000 you don’t buy one.
@@rajjy1976 I’ve just reserved one.

Brilliant review after so many that still want “sporty” cars… thank you!
Credit where credit's due, Steve Sutcliffe is an absolutely cracking good test-driver!
this is so much nicer than what the german brands are vomiting out nowdays.
Yep but the German, and we have to give them some credit for it, still put big petrol engines is their small cars.
@@robinmarples5198 why is that a good thing?
@@CharlieGB03 because makes me sweaty armpits
@@robinmarples5198 nah look at the German hatchbacks they're tiny underpowered u it's the new standard 1 series engines are all under 150bhp. The ds4 comes in 180bhp or 225bhp!
@@George-nv1ri for sure not. The 128ti I looking forward to have is 265 bhp, a downtoned version of the 306bhp engine of the 135i.
When Citroen will come to Canada...I'd buy a DS4 in a heart beat
DS is a separate brand, it's not Citroën anymore. And if anything, it looks more like Peugeot than a Citroën.
@@Beyllion DS is still part of Citroen, it’s their luxury subsidiary, if I’m not mistaken.
DS to the World , yes
@@franckseverac6709 alle jetzt zu Stellantis
@@franckseverac6709 DS is a brand not a part of Citröen
I would have this over a BMW 1 Series or A Class.
Best looking car of 2021/2022
I have the DS3 Crossback which looks surprisingly similar, and I love it. The cruise control on it is brilliant and on a motorway all you have to do is steer. The car slows down if it gets too near the one in front, and then picks. up speed when the distance is safe once again. Comfort is, and always has been the best in its class, and that's been true of Citroens - but not a car for boy racers!
If Steve likes a car then must be worth a look! Lovely looking and spec looks ok.
Citroën have come such a long way. The closest French car we have tested that comes close to German rivalry would be the Peugeot 508 GT line. Maybe this could contend with the best?
The best Car DS4 and Peugeot 3008,5008,508
Citroen and DS are interesting, wish they were sold here in the USA
What a beautiful car...amazing
I wud have bought one for family in a heartbeat IF ONLY THEY WOULD VENTURE OUT.
The best looking new buy-able vehicle out there rn imo.
Great review
Loverly looking car and the interior is something like you get in a £80,000 car I want one
I felt like 2008 had a really nice futuristic interior but this one pops out
Great reviewer, subscribed
You are the best reviewer by far🙂
More Steve, please.
bmw last great car was e39 m5 i like the ds4 hope they do a crossback version
class review...give him a lawnmower gti and ill watch it
Not everyone wants bumpy stiff ride just to claim first place in the dash from street light to street light with his 350 bhp+ super "hot hatchback" not to mention that the autobahn exists only in Germany and even there the average speed is 140-50 km/h ...Good job Citroen, really good job.
Lovely car. But in the UK it wont sell well. Sheep will still keep buying inferior BMW'S and Mercedes for the same price, simply for the badge.
If as you say you were driving the 1.6 petrol 225hp first then why did the choice of hybrid or electric come up on the drive mode selector?
It looks good but in the British Market what will the glove box be like ?
Deze weet eerste keer in bezetten ik vind de auto binnen en buiten super .het enige minpuntje dat er achteraan iets te weinig plaats is als ik achter me zelf zit met 186 CM . Toch vindt ik het de mooiste van zijn klasse
Wow, Steve driving a regular car?Slumming it 😂
It is setup for comfort and that’s how it should be.
With 19'? 😂😭
@@robinmarples5198 I would have preferred smaller wheels for comfort, but those 19" have as much sidewall as 16" on a Golf (205/55) as well as comfort oriented Michelin tires. More importantly, comfort mostly comes from the suspension setup.
@@dufonrafal yep true... But for the comfort of the eyes... Would be nice not to go over 18'
@@robinmarples5198 Sure, but again, those 19" are like 16" on Golf or a 308. So it's hard to compare just like that.
For me the biggest issue with those 19" are the proportionally narrow tires (205/55). But you might be able to switch theme for 235/50 on the same wheel, you can on the DS7.
@@dufonrafal so it's was I was saying... It s uncomfortable for the eye
Why is the B-pillar on the interior red?
Asked myself the same thing. I think he was driving a red car, and the "outside" footage they showed wasn't from the same drive as the interior footage. Although the hybrid did seem to match inside and out.
The footage outside is not “in sync” with the car he drives?
Absolutely stunning! - drives great, seats are very comfortable - they're like armchairs and very supportive. My only negatives are that the back doors only open a little bit, cheapest leather material used for interior dashboards to get easy scratch and also the rear seat space is a bit tight, not ideal for kids or and car seats. It doesn't hold its resale value very well, but apart from that it's a great car.
Can you compare this to the x1 in size and inside space?
The two are not comparable. This rivals the BMW 1-Series, not the BMW X1.
I bet în the magazine it will get a 3.5 stars review, dropping one star for being French and another half star for not having enough "feel".
Why was the review inside is a red coloured car which we didn’t see ?
Mr. Sutcliffe is second to none in car reviewing.
Not quite sure why he referred to the first car as the petrol 225 when it was quite clearly a hybrid!!
Wow top car
Why isn't anybody talking about the headline in the hybrid's case ? How could you not talk about the 230mpg claim ?
Please make one with the 2.2l diesel from Guilia/Stelvio(same company today).
Wish we got the DS brand in America
Stellantis (Ex PSA) actually planned to bring Peugeot and DS in the US, unfortunately they changed their mind and want now to focus on Alfa Romeo instead...
@@Dante-cq2zo Alfa Romeo unfortunately isn’t doing that well over here. The Stelvio sells OKAY but nothing to brag on. However, I definitely think it’s good that they’re over here.
@@mikedawkins346 I totally agree with you
@@mikedawkins346 A lot of vehicles is going to use PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel) platforms and as Chrysler and Dodge are part of the Stellantis group, I guess we are going to see some Chrysler / Dodge close to the Peugeot 508, 3008, etc... So you won't see Peugeot badges but a least "their" cars.
As for Alfa Romeo, Stellantis will work their image and cars for the better I hope.
@@wattana62 PSA / stellantis can change his mind in case of big benefit and to sell 1 peugeot car in usa but it will be a special car, sport car, luxury car , fun car to represent their brand with little sale . We call that a " niche " car .
I love the look of these alot, thank god Steve likes them as if he didn’t I would have to dislike them too and that would be tough lol.
So you don’t have a mind of your own? Great stuff 👍🏽
@@rajjy1976 it was a joke you bell end
Oops?,, nearly nodded off there Steve.🙀🤥😎
cars are getting stupid expensive, greedy corporations
You make them as good as they are for less money then if you're so smart.
Criticisms - loose that touch panel or put txt shortcut on it , bring back the light interior, and improve the fire wall soundproofing , and. Aubergine improve the gearbox it’s a little slow compared to other German rivals and with the ev. Please give it a bigger battery than others from the group such as the ec4 it needs a 75kwh pack option 50 is just not enough and will limit sales
I'd even watch a review of a shopping trolley if Steve was doing it

No hybrid suits it best.

3:40 gives me the horrors. Fiddling with his touch screen in the face of oncoming traffic while going round a bend he almost drifts into the verge.
Ds is really shining against the Germans. Mercedes look blobby, audi looks way too overdesigned and bmw is just plain ugly now. Ds is really standing up to lexus with this design
You, sir, are the inheritor of l.j.k setright.
Will be a brilliant used car... after 3 years heavy depreciation
how can you call this a review when you just sit in the front passenger seat the whole time. you don't even look at the rear seats ( which is something that buyers in this segment will be particulary intersted in ). no wonder carwow gets so many more viewers than u guys do
If you want practical advice go to carwow or whatcar, sutcliffe knows more about driving than either of those chumps.
you buy this DS and french poeple buy your nice range rover . Let's stop economic battle france , uk and let search win win solution . Fed up to hear bad news between france and uk .
Unpainted door panels visible inside. You can not have that red metal peeking through on a premium car. This is a pet peeve of mine, but none of my cars had this nonsense.
I really can't see how this car looks differently to a mazda or lexus SUV on the outside. Nice premiumish looking but thats about it
What I don't like about DS cars is the ride, even when they were still sold as Citroens, they were too stiff and overly sporty, instead of going for the expected comfortable approach. I remember test driving the DS5 when it came out expecting it to be a super comfy car, only to realize it had a ride like it had wooden stumps for springs, terrible ride compared to the C5 which was far cheaper. I think that's a big mistake, because someone who wants a stiff and sporty premium car will buy a BMW or an Audi instead, but there's no premium car for someone who wants something super comfortable and soft.
True but the ds5 was years ago, I hope they’ve improved. I’ll look at the C5X for a waftier ride
There are Mercedes and Lexus
The interior design looks quite lovely. I find the exterior rather generic and bland.
Alot of these reviews go on about, " not got the quality of a bmw, mercedes or audi". I looked at an Audi, and if im honest, looked bland.... also I know 3 owners of BMW's who said they'd never have another cuz of the amount if issues they've had with it
its too small
It is the same size as an Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf.
Not a fan of Mr Sutcliffe's reviews
"bosses at DS automobiles" - delusional !!!
0.47 secs in Flush fitting door handles but look at the paint just above the handle. There not gonna be taking on the Germans with that lack of attention to detail 😂
The DS 4 is built in Opel's Russelsheim plant. In Germany.
So that will be a drop of rain then!
@@adewinfindale6353 yeah I see your point, on a nice dry car you always get that one random droplet. 🤦♂️ it’s a paint defect 😂
@@Kookanoodles ok so it’s built in Germany and!!!!!…… quality control are obviously not as strict when building a french car 🤷🏼♂️
this cars testers are driving are still pre-series models, some of them mention this, some of them don't... Steve didn't. I've been in DS dealership, saw their other two production models and sat in them, and I was astounded by the build quality! this is not Tesla with their shabby plastic, ill-fitting panels and bad paint job... this (and I'm not talking about design and personal tastes) seriously "shuts your mouth" about "lousy french cars", especially in the interior ... I can't see any reason DS 4 would be any different. if anything, it most likely is the best of them in every respect!
Full EV in 2024 ?!?!
Wow, they really know how to build a premium brand - holy, what a failure 🤦♂️
Plus: marketing and availability (of show cars, not even deliveries) is a shame too.
Here in Berlin (isn't that one of the bigger cities in Germany?!) they STILL don't have show cars, not even of the longer-lived DS9 (which took them so long to bring to market, that it appers outpaced by this DS4 - and it looks not even close to Numéro 9/Metropolis).
Hey Paris, you totally failed so far in building this brand !!!
This the citroen eC4
Civic type r... The best and not German.
43k. Are You Facking Crazy !!!???
I don't understand the people that want EV. I park in the street and do long rides on a motorcycle. i just can't buy EV
£35K on Citroen ? Never !
Likewise, 10k Pounds for a Samsung. Never.
CITROEN the best looking French cars. But they copy Audi alot.
Sorry but PSA is a big nono. Especially those diesels
If you watch the video you'll hear that there's no diesel option.
PSA diesels are among the best. Why not?
just another french , I dont feel and think it gives premium impression to anyone
I think it looks ok, better then a golf inside and out, and on par wit the 2 series and a-class
I have a DS 7 and I can assure you it is definitely a premium car
