As much as people complain about vehicle prices, a house is much more difficult if you aren’t already an owner with equity built up (of course regional prices will vary). Around me, a decent single family home can’t be really found for less than $400k, and our market is far from the worst in the country.

@@wl6020 in some respects yes, but (at least from my knowledge of other brands from that era) typically hatches also have things like rear hatch struts, wiper, remote unlocking, different rear seats which do not have an integral body support behind them, etc. I'm sure popularity also plays a role as I think traditionally hatches have always garnered a bit more attention than sedans.

Do these prices include cost of ownership? A little more expensive hybrid from a brand that has a good reliability rating, might be less expensive! Maybe one of these models in hybrid (if they make it) might be a little more but will save you that and more over a 7 year ownership period (if not longer). Also, often, while we feel the itch for a change, it might be better to simply get the old car you know repaired and keep the oil changed and yearly maintenance done on it for sure. Getting it detailed by a pro in and out can also make it feel like new!
