The MSRP of the base model Jetta in 94 was almost $14k which is about $29k in today's dollars, and it was a much simpler car (manual windows, no ABS, read drums, etc..) had less power, worse fuel economy. It's great they still make a car like this at such affordable price.
I've driven, and owned nothing but VW's since I first started driving in 1976, I have 4 VWs in my fleet, including a '78 Super Beetle Convertible. Thanks for your review of the Jetta.
Had a 68 beetle in Germany. Kind of comforting that if you had some wire a pair of panty hose (can and did work for an engine belt) and duct tape you pretty well sure that you could fix it enough to get home! It was the only car I ever was in that you needed a passenger to scrape the inside of the windshield when cold out!
I have a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta Sport 1.8t. It currently has 122k trouble free miles. I’m the second owner and bought it at 38k miles in 2019. The car is still driving strong, has been super reliable and still a joy to drive. I’m currently looking to upgrade to a current gen Jetta but not sure if I need to or not because my car is doing just fine. If anything, it would be purely a tech upgrade.
Maint. Is most important for any car. I bought a brand new VW Fox in 1989 and put over 300k miles on her with no issues at all except regular maint. Of 3k oil changes with OEM oil filter and graphite oil additive. Only mech. Work was new rotors/brakepads and wheel bearings replaced along with shifter bearings replaced at the hand shifter. After manually shifting for 250k miles it needed it but the clutch never had to be replaced only adjusted. Best car i ever owned next to my toyotas of today.
Probably the most in depth car review I've ever watched. I'm not even looking to buy a new car. I'll send this to anyone looking to buy a new car though. Love volkswagens.
Daily Motion podcast got 54 mpg at 70 mph from the manual transmission.. My Jetta 8 speed automatic I can only get 49.9 at 70 mpg. But at 55 mph of non stop driving I can get 60+. Stop and go driving I always get 40 +mpg. For what it costs it drives and handles well and its a great value.
My wife and I have a 2019, Bought it when it was new 3 miles on the odometer. Had the car for a month and they needed to replace the ECM due to a malfunctioning remote start. Then we had the Oil Sending unit replaced due to codes at 13K miles, a plastic coolent pipe and coolent sensor at 22K miles, as well as a number of visits due to rattling in the drivers door which they needed to replace the locking mechanism as well as weather stripping in the door. We are contemplating on trading it in for a Toyota. Car still has under 60K miles and is under warranty until 72K miles bumper to bumper.
None of the issues you had though ever left you standed on the side of the road like my new Toyota Corolla did. Ironically I traded the Corolla that day for a VW GTI. haha
2019 Jetta S here. 6sp manual. Was under $17,000 when I bought it new!! One trip to the dealer for warranty for an emissions purge valve (stupid EPA crap). 62,000 miles. No issues at all. It's been great. Best of all it drives like a VW! It's been beyond great.
I love seeing cost effective reviews just like high performance devices. I'll never able to afford an expensive car, but for a new device this could be in range and is surprisingly nice! Thanks!
Sarah I absolutely love you videos! I own a 2016 VW Jetta with the 1.8t engine. Bought it for just over $16,000!!! Just broke 50,000 miles. I change the oil and air filters…that’s it! It’s the Corolla of Jetta’s!!!
I've owned two of these in recent years. One 2019 I got for the kid and the other 2020 I got for the wife. We drove from Chicago to Phoenix and averaged 54 mpg at 80 mph with cruise control.
My daughter bought a used 2017 SE and the 1.4L in that thing is impressive. Not much seems to have changed in 7 years. When I was younger (in the 70's) - 7 years was an eternity in car development/evolution.
Not having to toggle shport mode every time I enter the vehicle would be great. The beltline on new Jettas look sharp enough to cut glass. Not bad looking, though.
We bought a 2022 for my daughter. For what it is the power is great, cruises nice on the highway and if you go 65 it will get 46 mpg. The car has 36k miles and so far zero issues just the three oil changes the first two were free.
I got my girl a ‘17 SE for $129/month lease when VW was basically giving their cars away after diesel gate, and it has honestly been one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. In 2017 all models got the GLI’s IRS so it handles well above its price, and the 1.4t is punchy at legal speeds and gets >40mpg no matter how you drive. It hasn’t needed a single repair for 70k miles and still looks and drives like new. It has had many CELs and fault codes, but it’s all just over-reactive sensors and easily cleared with an OBD Eleven scanner. We liked the little car so much that we bought out the lease after 3 years and just decided to keep it as an extra vehicle forever. The residual was so in our favor that it only took another 2 years at $250/mo to pay off. I drive WRXs and tune them to within an inch of their life, but as I get older I’m more and more tempted to trade my ‘22 WRX for a ‘17 GLI DCT with a mild tune and switch between that and the SE depending on if I’m commuting or driving for pleasure. Sure would make consumables easy to stockpile lol.
My 2011 Jetta TDI has a 14 gallon fuel tank with 52 miles per gallon highway it has quite the range , the diesel has a huge amount of torque making it fun to drive.
I’m really enjoying your latest video drop schedule. That Jetta is a great value that definitely shows its VW/Audi lineage. “Drunk robot”… 🤣 Thank you, Sarah. 👍👍👍
VW has really improved their vehicles today. I remember my friend’s new VW Rabbit of about 1975. It completely rusted out by 1-2 years and my friend never ever bought another VW. Great video.
The Jetta is a great car. I wish VW would give you a GLI to review. I love your car reviews👍🏾. I have a 2019 GLI with the 7 speed DSG and it is a total sleeper. Great power from the 2.0 Turbo and incredible fuel mileage averaging over 30 mpg. Plus VW gave it a better sounding exhaust for the refresh a few years ago. Keep up the awesome work.
They seem like they've stepped up their game a lot in reliability since I last had a VW from 20 years ago. But it's 2024, and they are still using timing belts instead of chains? Why???
Timing chain issues were resolved some time ago...people keep bringing up stuff from like 15 yrs ago and think its the same today. VW does make improvements. Most timing chain wear now a days is caused by the 10k oil change intervals, so the best thing you can do for your engine and timing chain is change your oil more frequently.@@jeffhager7787
After watching your review on Nissan Versa 2024, I learned alot of the car I bought recently, and Im much happier about my purchase as well. Your reviewing method should be the standard way, I love how you reveal the tech behind ❤️ Now I can't watch other car reviews 😅
Thank you for pitching cars over SUVs and crossovers, but the US market desperately needs wagons! Golf Sportwagen got discontinued in 2019; Passat wagon ca. 2011.
Well you can buy an Audi RS6 Avant. That would be a proper wagon. And a high end one at that and hot rodded german style too: 620hp V8 autobahn rocketship. Two problems though: Starts at 120k $ and gets like 15mpg.
@alouisschafer7212 Third problem: the Golf and Jetta Gen3 4-cylinder engines are FAR more reliable than that biturbo V-6. (My younger son had a 2000 RS-4, the only lemon among six the VW/Audi cars we have owned. Total money pit.) Note to VW/Audi -- I want an affordable, efficient, reliable wagon, which is why I am keeping my 2001 Passat 1.8T variant and my 2016 Golf Sportwagen.
The Jetta really is an example of how different preferences and tastes can be between europe and the US. Here in Europe the Jetta was pretty unpopular, the most of them I've seen driving around were Jetta 4s and most of them have disappeared. They tried renaming it but that didn't work well either so now they don't even sell them here anymore.
So happy to see you convert the metric measurements to SAE for those of us who are not metric centric. I was getting tired of stopping the video to divide your measurements by 25.4 to get the SAE number. Thanks!
2017 Jetta S manual 5 speed. I adore it. Trips at 80 mph all the way gets 40-42 mpg. It has the 1+ unitronix tune (from the dealer) and does 60 in 6.8, top speed 143. Ten thou / year, I'll keep it for 15 years
I have a 2011 Jetta TDI top of the line for 2011 and I don’t get even half of the features on this Jetta. Very nice little car, and I like that it’s timing belt, I feel they’re more reliable than timing chains.
2014 Passat bought new, 169,413 miles, still ZERO SQUEAKS OR RATTLES , maintained well. Use BG's, MOA, EPR and 44K. Most reliable car Ive owned in my 67 years, including my 2011 base GTI with DSG
I never understood VW line up, especially when they had the Bora and the Golf estate/wagon, the CC Passat (which should have become the next big Alfa before the failed takeover)...
I have a 2019 6 spd Jetta S. The shock absorbers are far and away the worst I’ve encountered on any new car but aside from that, it’s been such an excellent car. Well over 40 mpg on the highway and excellent torque too. Great seats and solid construction.
"The 2024 Volkswagen Jetta has a predicted reliability score of 81 out of 100 from US News Cars, which is considered "Great". However, Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 Jetta will be less reliable than the average new car, based on data from the 2021 model and Volkswagen brand scores. Consumer Reports also gave the Jetta 3 out of 5 marks for predicted reliability, with the only major issue being the in-car electronics."
My friend has a 2023 Jetta sport, it’s a great car, aside from being a lower trim with inadequate headlights for driving anywhere without street lights. Despite dating back to 2019 the current generation still feels decently fresh and gets impressive gas mileage, I’d say it’s a great car for people in urban areas and is a mature yet fun car for people of all ages.
My first NEW car I ever had was my 2000 Jetta VR6 GLX. That car was one of my favorite cars I owned and I always regretted selling it. So unique with the VR6 and a manual. And this thing has almost the same power. Knowing what I know now I should have bought it as a GTI instead, but it was still a great car.
Excellent and entertaining review as usual, I owned a VW Rabbit in my younger years (it lasted over 200,000 miles!), but have not owned a VW since, I would seriously consider this car if I was in the market, looks great!
Aloha Miss Sarah! Back in 1989 my girlfriend at the time picked up her Jetta in Germany and we drove 1700 miles. Shifting into 5th at 95 was a blast plus the catalytic convertor hadn't been installed yet. 6 speed manual you're talking about would be even mo betta. PS if it is not German, it's only a car.
Just sold my '90 turbodiesel Jetta. Still running strong. Bought in Germany by overseas member of armed forces. Top end in 5th was 160 kph (100mph), but 5th was an overdrive, and you could get right up there in 4th.
I leased a base 6MT Jetta for 2 years for $49/month on some crazy deal. It was the best $49/month I ever spent. With a manual the car is actually quite fun and it's solid for being a "cheap" car.
I have the 2019 GLI version. It is the first year of this model and I have enjoyed driving it. I have a few complaints after almost five years of driving but don't plan on getting rid of the car anytime soon. If you haven't driving the GLI you might want to do so just to compare. Mine has the 6 speed manual. One of the reasons I bought the grey ghost was the manual. It is a fun car to drive.
Fantastic review. I’ve always felt that VWs, and the Jetta in particular, are well made cars and have value exceeding other mainstream automakers (especially when compared to our American brands)
VW always gives you more bang for your buck than the competition. That’s been their hallmark since the beginning. You get a car that costs similar to a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra that is a lot more fun to drive and has unexpected features like heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and even a heated steering wheel for $30k. It’s one of the reasons I love the VW brand and the Jetta in particular. I just wish that you didn’t have to step up to the top GLI trim to get an independent rear suspension now. I would gladly pay a few hundred bucks extra for better handling with IRS.
I had a 1981 Jetta GLI (engine and transmission parts from the Golf GTI) ex- swiss police vehicule, it was such as cool car... Cool to see VW still proposing this model
Great review, spot on with everything. I picked up a Sport with the 6MT for $24K several months ago and I'm consistently surprised at how nice it is, especially for the price. With all manual VWs going away I'd pick one up now if you're thinking about it.
At least it's not a 3 cylinder. But with cylinder deactivation which drops the engine to two cylinder to save fuel and expedite the demise of the engine
I always love the fact that Sarah gives every car - regardless of price point - a fair and honest shake.

Get a bank loan instead of trading it in
The gooch is the most luxurious and highest performing part of the possum
So how well does her gooch perform?
Ironically I traded the Corolla that day for a VW GTI. haha
@@eppyz How is it? water pump issues fixed?
2019 Jetta S here. 6sp manual. Was under $17,000 when I bought it new!! One trip to the dealer for warranty for an emissions purge valve (stupid EPA crap). 62,000 miles. No issues at all. It's been great. Best of all it drives like a VW!
It's been beyond great.
It is a VW car.
Thanks!
My car was recently totaled. Thank you for making my search sooooooooooo much easier!❤
It’s a great example of attention to detail can mitigate a lot of material choices. Cheap doesn’t have to feel like it.
I love seeing cost effective reviews just like high performance devices. I'll never able to afford an expensive car, but for a new device this could be in range and is surprisingly nice! Thanks!
very goods, tanks sir
I’m a die hard American, but even I can admit these are phenomenal cars, might be my next purchase.
I got a Jetta sport with a 6 speed manual in December and I love the thing.
Does the 2018 1.8T se sport Jetta have the IRS?
@@willie123811 yep, they went back to torsion beam in 2019.
I had a 2016 model blue colour 1.4 Tsi Jetta a wonderful car. I sold it in 2021. I miss it
Going down the street tomorrow to look for a manual at the VW dealership. For a test drive only,
They seem like they've stepped up their game a lot in reliability since I last had a VW from 20 years ago. But it's 2024, and they are still using timing belts instead of chains? Why???
Because their timing chains suck as bad or worse than their timing belts.

💯 on the comment about not needing an SUV. So sick of the crossover obsession.
This is a car with a nice interior, creature comforts, good fuel economy, and a whiff of torque. Just what normal people want.
Needs a twin turbo v8
@@juice7661obviously. Anything less than 200 hp is for wusses.
After watching your review on Nissan Versa 2024, I learned alot of the car I bought recently, and Im much happier about my purchase as well. Your reviewing method should be the standard way, I love how you reveal the tech behind ❤️ Now I can't watch other car reviews 😅
Can't help but wonder if that sticker you removed was a "do not remove under penalty of law".

I have the Jetta Hybrid from 2016 and it's 1.4L turbo, the electric adds some boost, and it's so frickin fun. All the SEL stuff, but also hybrid
Thank you for pitching cars over SUVs and crossovers, but the US market desperately needs wagons! Golf Sportwagen got discontinued in 2019; Passat wagon ca. 2011.
You are so right. vw golf sportwagon was the best car ever. I have a 2017 looking for a 2019. Suvs are unnecessary.
Well you can buy an Audi RS6 Avant. That would be a proper wagon. And a high end one at that and hot rodded german style too:
620hp V8 autobahn rocketship.
Total money pit.)
Note to VW/Audi -- I want an affordable, efficient, reliable wagon, which is why I am keeping my 2001 Passat 1.8T variant and my 2016 Golf Sportwagen.
I bought a 2024 Jetta GLI manual, well built, quick and fun to drive.
I lost it at "possum gooch fur..." Your descriptors are so damn funny.
Totally laughed out loud at that one!
40th Anniversary edition with manual, $29,310, including shipping. 2L engine, 228 hp.
This is one of the best car reviews/testing I’ve ever seen. Great job.
"3 round burst, bird!" lol

So happy to see you convert the metric measurements to SAE for those of us who are not metric centric. I was getting tired of stopping the video to divide your measurements by 25.4 to get the SAE number. Thanks!

2017 Jetta S manual 5 speed. I adore it. Trips at 80 mph all the way gets 40-42 mpg. It has the 1+ unitronix tune (from the dealer) and does 60 in 6.8, top speed 143. Ten thou / year, I'll keep it for 15 years
Love your video's Sarah! Please continue to make videos, of affordable cars.
I have a 2011 Jetta TDI top of the line for 2011 and I don’t get even half of the features on this Jetta. Very nice little car, and I like that it’s timing belt, I feel they’re more reliable than timing chains.
These Monday morning posts really give my heart the beans😅
2014 Passat bought new, 169,413 miles, still ZERO SQUEAKS OR RATTLES , maintained well. Use BG's, MOA, EPR and 44K. Most reliable car Ive owned in my 67 years, including my 2011 base GTI with DSG
Sarah your dad jokes are hilarious especially when you laugh at them yourself 🤣😂
Nice calipers. I'm a machinist, mitutoyo is my go to brand!
I miss the Bora, that was a great car that was so distinct from the Golf.
I never understood VW line up, especially when they had the Bora and the Golf estate/wagon, the CC Passat (which should have become the next big Alfa before the failed takeover)...
Before I got my WRX, I had a Jetta. It was a wonderful car!
Sarah you are quickly becoming my favorite automobile reviewer. Love the humor!

I really like your reviews. You miss nothing.
Excellent and entertaining review as usual, I owned a VW Rabbit in my younger years (it lasted over 200,000 miles!), but have not owned a VW since, I would seriously consider this car if I was in the market, looks great!
I just lost it......possum Gooch....... love it
I have a 2021 se Jetta and we just got over 50 mpg in a 400 mile trip. We paid a little over $20,000 great car!

"Possum gooch fur..." hahahaha
I leased a base 6MT Jetta for 2 years for $49/month on some crazy deal. It was the best $49/month I ever spent. With a manual the car is actually quite fun and it's solid for being a "cheap" car.
Very enjoyable and insightful
Thank you Sarah
I have the 2019 GLI version. It is the first year of this model and I have enjoyed driving it. I have a few complaints after almost five years of driving but don't plan on getting rid of the car anytime soon. If you haven't driving the GLI you might want to do so just to compare. Mine has the 6 speed manual. One of the reasons I bought the grey ghost was the manual. It is a fun car to drive.
Love starting my day with a little Miss Sarah n Tuned.😊
Mr. Not Miss
Fantastic review. I’ve always felt that VWs, and the Jetta in particular, are well made cars and have value exceeding other mainstream automakers (especially when compared to our American brands)
Sarah the Great! 🎉
Your reviews are top tier well done 👌

I had a 1981 Jetta GLI (engine and transmission parts from the Golf GTI) ex- swiss police vehicule, it was such as cool car... Cool to see VW still proposing this model
Manual with a diesel would be awesome
You wouldnt want a modern VW diesel.
Great review, spot on with everything. I picked up a Sport with the 6MT for $24K several months ago and I'm consistently surprised at how nice it is, especially for the price. With all manual VWs going away I'd pick one up now if you're thinking about it.
I see plates from all over the country for your reviews, do they ship them to you or does someone drive them there?
Manufacture plates, they’re associated with the car manufacturers headquarters location not the actual car.

My 14 Jetta wasn’t fully loved when I bought it. I did some ignored engine maintenance and it’s been a dependable ride. Just what I want!
At least it's not a 3 cylinder.
But with cylinder deactivation which drops the engine to two cylinder to save fuel and expedite the demise of the engine
And to add to that, not even steel liners in the block.
Still a better engine then Ford 😊
USB and USB-C ports for rear seat are inside the center console with notch for cables
strange, mine doesn't have them inside there. I wish it had a USB port since I like to put music on a flash drive, but it doesn't have one.
