one of the greatest manga i've ever read
Same here, this one is up there along with Berserk and Vagabond.
I haven't yet read the final book but everything else tho. Spoilers btw. It has been super well written and interesting. It makes so well the transformation of Thorfinn even though everyone always wants to see the protagonist be the badass and Yukimura dares to kinda make with it a 180° even at the time when they kill off my and propably many others favorite character aka Askeladd and the story still holds it's own. I also loved the introduction of Garm because in some ways he is an enbodiment what Thorfinn could have become if he didn't start and look his life in a new way (he could have escaped the slavery almost at any point, maybe Snake was only one who could have done something about it). Even tho Garm is a total psychopath clearly from his birth, there still is similarities of how Thorfinn could have ended up if Askeladd stayed alive long enough keeping Thorfinn's rage going on and not learn his (true) fathers way. I haven't seen the anime at all and don't know if I will watch it because the transformation from manga to anime can feel a bit odd sometimes because the characters faces look a little differend etc. But yeah it have been totally my one obsession for 6 months or so for now since I have also collected other stuff at the same time like every Junji Ito's eng release except the cat, Yun & Mun book (but that doesn't count, right? 😅). Just few days ago got No Longer Human, kinda saved it as last because it's an adaptation even tho obviously Frankenstein and also Venus In The Blind Spot have some adaptated material too.
Should i watch anime or read manga
Im caught up to many mangas atm, but Vinland Saga is always the one im the most hyped for when a new chapter comes out.
It has 197 chapters, fairly long, but you read trough it so seamlessly. It's constantly fresh, the vibe changes drasticly but story makes sense and feels consistant. Even in "chill" farmland arc you get some situations where Thorfin has to stand up and you start to appreciate his new outlook on life. Not to mention Askeladd, by far my favourite character in the series. Art is also top tier. Pure masterclass on good art and story telling.

Vinland Saga is a damn good manga and a very good story as well.
The final arc will be a bittersweet one, but yet beautiful, as we have already seen in previous chapters.

I said it before in this channel, but this is one of the best representation of vikings I've seen precisely because it is a story of how hard it is to escape violence and, mate, you'll have to look hard to find a better suited people for that topic (meaning, yeah, the times were violent in general compare to now. But the viking world was leagues away from the Angles of England, for example) Yukimura did a fantastic job creating the character's psychy and show how messed up that society was and, at the same time, make us care about the characters. You don't like Thorfinn or Askeladd because they're violent and lethal, but despite that; you can see how violence have destroyed them but there is no good way of let it behind.
Wonderful manga. I just hope it gets finished. I can't see another masterpiece left unfinished.

The battle at Jomsborg in the third arc is one of the best battle scenes I've ever seen. Chaotic and nuanced with great illustrations and paneling. The third arc is my favorite but it might become my second after the current arc which absolutely SLAPS! So far at least
I put off watching reading this forever until the first opening came up on my Apple Music on my j rock station. Loved the song, found out it was from this. Then just bought 11 volumes. With everything everyone says I’m hype. I have NO idea what the story is so it’s exciting to go in blind. Great content as always man

It's my favorite manga. I love the anime. I found Thorfinn character development made so well. I have 12 hard cover. Reading book 11 right now. I don't like fights in media most times. The situations when Thorfinn is put to fight is very captivating. I love the idea of Hild.

I love how polarizing askelad is, I don’t think there was a single character he interacted with that he didn’t change in the story, except maybe floki and leif. It’s crazy how dynamic he is at certain moments sparing and even rewarding those who directly betrayed him while at other times pissing on the honor of the Vikings and even committing genocide to entire villages simply because they are at the wrong place at the wrong time. It’s ironic how he was truly a free man and could’ve left this life at any time but still died a slave to his honor as a Welshman.

Might sound weird but Vinland Saga is a comfort show/manga for me. First watched it when I was 15 and loved the manga, has helped me through some tough times
I just started and caught up to the newest chapter of vinland saga and wow. I don't think I've ever wanted to cry so badly when Hild forgave Thorfinn. Thank you for recommending this because I may have not read it otherwise.

Definitely a worthwhile manga & anime. I bought the hardcover volumes 1-7 to have the prologue and farmland arcs as physical copies. To me it was a 10/10 start to the story. Excited for season 2!
In the latr arcs really whenever thorfinn gts forced into fights its really so much more tension because thre i weight behind it, because thofinn cant just violence his way out of it. And how hilde is such a good foil for thorfin . Also a badass but also, he really tragic and she grows too. And how he is tested. And th realism that yeah violence eists still, but still worth sticking to your principles.
I think the image as vikings as that uuh scary pirates, and thats great, that they just did get by by whatever they could (and why they resorted to raiding) not for glory or whatever but survival, and that this is very much shown in thorfins family. And so accurate. That vikings were not the most violent and probably a lot is propaganda, but that is shown, they just want to farm and live happy for the most part there.. And that vikings is just the title for the raiders, the most of the time they were just farmers and traders.

I might check it out later, I just feel a little Norse’d/Viking’d out at the moment between rewatching the Thor movies (to prepare for Thor love&thunder), The Northmen recently, the Vikings show, Vikings Valhalla, The Norsemen show and The Last Kingdom, playing God of War and Assassins Creed Valhalla, even Elder Scrolls, LOTR, GOT so I’m taking a beat from it at the moment but you do a great job selling it, I’ll check it out later on maybe right after or b4 Thor love&thunder
I'm almost done with the first season of Vinland Saga (I'll probably finish it tonight). I plan on reading the manga afterwards because I need to know where this story goes. I haven't watched a ton of anime shows or read a lot of manga, but this is another favorite already. I started to watch the video, but already saw some things I hadn't seen yet, so I'm not going to watch this video because I don't want spoilers.
Edit: I just finished the first season. Now, it's on to the manga!

Vinland saga is my favourite manga of all time, i love thorfinn and his journey. He inspires me, i'm very happy that he had some happiness moments in his life. I have a lot of hype to see how thorfinn's ideals will clash with natives and eyvar.

It's hard to say the story is even loosely based on anything real but the manga have done extensive researche on how they lived back then to the point of what they used for eating, what they ate, how they did this and that. It's very meticulous in that part but the story is pure fiction even tho there is some minor things like Leif visiting Vinland and some other known names in the story from the time period. But what I've understood is that what we know about the real Thorfinn is that he was an sailor more than anything else.
Vinland Saga will also animated by MAPPA! The best written anime animated by MAPPA so far. Well yes Vinland Saga is wayy better written than aot specially the mc lol!incomparable

Anyway, who’re you to decide what doesn’t mix well? If the story wanted to be a mindless action viking series just to kill someone’s time, the author could’ve made that no problem. But he wanted to make a story that shows more than just that. Thorfinn took the path of pacifism because of what he has gone through, and what has lead to it. Who told you that you have to agree with thorfinn’s new take? That’s why we have people like Canut and Eyvar to show that not everything will be solved in peaceful manners. Too bad, this series is actually good, but you decided to drop it. Sucks for you. :/
Honestly, the first season was solid even with "peace" thing. And the farm arc was kinda okay, still readable and plausible to believe in characters' decisions and motives. But then...then there was freaking santa barbara with ton of "funny and good" characters with kind hearts and naive motivations. Even though, I did like how the mc changed for good and all, but why changing all the world surrounding him into the rainbow and ponies stuff?? Anyway, do not recommend anyone falling into the trap of the first season. Sure, start is fire, but the continuance is just for another people
@@bizanci0 The start was very mid. It gets better every arc. The characters aren't just naively kind people, there's nuance to their ideals and what it truly means to be kind. And yes, Thorfinn is extreme and it has great potential to hurt him, but the manga isn't over yet dude. We'll see what happens

While in the escaping th battle, there was luck, that was them thinking on their feet and not downplaying how incredibly hard it is to stay true to tht dedication, again and again, and that dark stuff still happens. How is that sunshine and rainbows? The story never downplays he cant stop violence but he can do what he can in his radius to be better about it. And yeah thats drawing people to him.

Realistic doent mean dark and violent, like life can be very very weird. And its pretty realistic in showing that struggle that thorfin has to live up to ideals in a world and past that haunts him. Well even the farm arc is, and that most norseman just want to live or went with piracy because they want to live and farm. Why he would siced at least for a time possible, i mean it ends tragic fo him, but its possible or a good time if they find a good land to farm out of reach of territorial conflicts.
Vinland saga was the most pretentious and boring manga i have read in the last two years. would not recommend.

If I'd go for a Norse-based story I'd preffer God of War then. Krato's development of someone changed by violence and loss is much more beliavable. Since the death of Askeladd it became a manga about solving any situation with the power of friendship or some love nonsense. On book 9 it was the last straw with that "solving this because jesus told me so" BS, it became unbearable so I dropped there. Even the character designs changed to a more cartoony and cutesy art style to fit the indigestible moral fallacy the author believes. Vincuck Soyga should be renamed to My Little Pony at this point.
