I feel at this point in the manga that Vinland Saga is something very different to its common counterparts of Vagabond and Berserk. It has matured, not through (exclusively) craftsmanship, tone or mentality, but rather purpose. I think that while purpose is interpreted quite literally as one of the biggest themes in all three of these seinen giants and their corresponding authors, in Vinland Saga it has taken a new meaning.
Vinland has detached itself from being part of this "trinity" in my opinion. Vinland Saga is like someone who went to art school and devoted themself to becoming a master painter, but is now in their 30's and paints for fun, painting for the people around them, even though their art would single-handedly turn a gallery into a national landmark.

Vinland Saga to me always felt like the opposite, but also important, side to Berserk
In the way that Guts is a protagonist known for never sitting down, to keep going and cut through everything for his goal, to keep struggling
Thorfinn is similar through a struggle of, well, not fighting. Guts looks at danger straight ahead taking it head on. Thorfinn looks at danger trying to work around it or remove the conflict entirely.
There’s a line when Thorfinn visits his father’s grave “When I was a boy my father said something to me. ‘You have no enemies. There is no one you should hurt’. Now I realize what a noble teaching this is. I want to do right by those words. But, IT’S JUST SO EXHAUSTING.”
Thorfinn doesn’t always go through an external struggle every moment of his life but suffers keeping to the ideology to set for himself. That in the world you NEED to stand your ground in what you believe and know is right. Even if the world says otherwise and I love his conversation with Canute because of this clash of Ideology.
To not kill and use the first resort that always reduces and takes away conflict.
Where Guts is offense style of Thorfinn is defense
Guts is an unstoppable force, The Struggler, Thorfinn is the Immovable Object, A True Warrior, like his father
    1 took out 100 men
    1 took on 100 punches
2 sides of a similar coin

6:38 That entire scene of Thorfinn being told he has to carry everyone with him to get out of that pit, reminds me of a story I once read about of a man who was stuck in purgatory, when he would try to escape, piles of other dammed souls would hang onto him to try and leave as well, he would try to get them off him, which would only result in him falling down once more and failing to escape. Eventually, he decides to bear the burden and lets them hang on to him as he climbs out, which is when he finally succeeds.

This is because I thought (at least before reading peakland saga) that I was a fan of action manga only, but this manga proved me wrong really fast. It's my favorite manga ever because it hits so close to home and the characters are all endearing in their own right, even the "villains", who I would argue aren't really villains because I can see why the characters act the way they do and it just feels very realistic. This series really just hit my emotions and has a special place in my heart.

It hasn’t completely changed how I do things all that much, but I do stop and think before I get absorbed in my anger and might lash out and think about that first option.

Hild (Hildr) is the name of a valkyrie and means battle in old Norse. Hild is used in many poetic phrases for battle. Old Norse poetry use many poetic phrases to allude to concepts because it makes it easier to write alliterative verse, the poet can pick any number of different phrases to fit with the alliteration instead of being tied down to just a few words. And the archaic set phrases become a poetry in themselves.
The main tale about Hildr is a darker version of the rape of the Sabine women where the host of the father and the host of the husband / bride stealer fight and kill each other and are then resurrected in the evening by Hild and then fight and kill each other the next day, every day, forever, until Ragnarök. Hence, Hildr came to embody eternal battle or battle itself.
The husband / bride stealer of Hild is Heðin, hence, a kenning for Hild is often used to allude to Hild is often "the woman of Hethin" or "hethins maiden" or some such.
Here are some kennings using Hild or allusions to Hild to say "battle" in a poetic way:
    "leikr Hildar"
    = Hild's Game = battle
    "Heðins snotar mot"
    = to meet Hethin's woman = battle
    "harðan leikr Hildar"
= hard game of Hild = battle
So Hild as the name of a revenge cycle is not a bad choice.

I really like that this hits on that idea of being empty allowing for rebirth. Because how I've heard it is "when you have nothing you can be anything". It's the idea of once you have nothing to lose you have nothing holding you back. It is both a comfort to those going through stuff and also a reevaluation for those that find materialism losing it's luster. In the case of the latter you find that your possessions aren't what defines you as a person, you learn that you don't even need a roof over your head. The only thing we truly require is food, once that baseline is achieved we can put all our energy into achieving our goals, whatever those may be.
The way I break it down is saying "say your goal currently is to relax on a beach, you can achieve that" and people like to respond you need a car, gas, etc. I then slap my legs and go "nope, you've always had transportation sorted, your legs are all you need".

I'm absolutely loving every second of it and it's been incredibly addicting to read. It's been written and paced so well, that it's very easy to read. It's smooth to read through.
Vinland Saga's anime is the first anime that made me want to get the manga to continue the story, now that says hell of a lot about a story. I'm nowhere finished with it (I'm on book 7), but it's already special to me in that regard.
Berserk is my first ever manga that I started to read and Vinland Saga is my second. I'm reading both of them alongside each other to an extent and it's amazing to go through two absolute peak stories at the same time.

As much as it's been thrown next to Berserk, I've always gotten the sense that it's far more grounded, with maybe less extreme lows and less fantastical highs. Curious to see if that holds up.

The way Vinland saga explores the cycle of human violence and how it ultimately just destroys everything around you is rivaled only by the likes of Berserk
Both the characters and the story itself shift their themes from revenge and the brutality of war to that of pacifism and personal developement
Its honestly an absolute treat with the artwork tying it all together

I think hild repeating herself a lot reflects thorfinn saying "i am only doing this in order to have a duel with you askeladd" "i am the one who will kill you askelad" and those things. She has her inner conflicts and they are showed so little comapared to thorfin because she is a side character

Fun fact if people didn't know. Vinland is a Danish word, meaning wine country. It's the name the Danish Vikings gave America when they first discovered it.
I'm actually Danish and didn't even realise the name was Danish until a friend told me😅

Vinland saga has moments that can truly stick with you. Arnheid's death messed with me for a while.
The mood of the story shifts as the story goes on. I believe it's meant to reflect Thorfinn's change. Like, comedy is there in the prologue, but it is uses more liberally as the story continues. That's good storytelling, in my opinion.

    Yes Vinland saga is peak.
Yes if you're young, then you're not gonna be able to understand the deeper meaning behind every character. Although you have an amazing plot and development you can enjoy and grow from. Im 16 and I caught up to the Vinland saga manga when I was 15 and it became my favorite. I believe I'm gonna continue to love this manga more and more as I grow older and as I become more wiser. (yes, I admit that I'm not socrates level wise (yet :) ), just because i read seinen manga, also I don't believe age in number always signify intellect). Vinland saga manages to have a very diverse cast while still having parallel characters. And the fact that every important character including villains have their own personal achievement, just shows how important the characters are and how well it can positively affect a good story. The manga is ending soon i believe, and I wish the best for it. The manga still has a few very important conclusions to make and I believe once they have been made, it's in the GOAT-debate.
