    Well, Thorfinn learned important things from Askeladd. For example he learned that, if one has a dream in mind, s/he has to take the burden to make it real, because there are no heroes or gods available to carry out the job. Thorfinn succeeded where his father failed because he learned that lesson, and took the burden to make the world a better place. In a way, he has now become the legendary hero of the Welsh people, a rightful leader reigning on a peaceful island far away in the West.

    I think Vinland Saga is a perfect “first manga”. Really good art work and fantastic paneling so it’s really easy on the eyes. It also has a good story with something in it for everyone. There are portions of the series that feel like a slice of life and some that feel like a battle shonen. The series just gets better as it goes and it’s fun to read. Its a good recommendation for someone’s first manga.

    This is something I wish for everyone who start off reading manga, who goes through all the reccomeneded and suggested. Finding how vast this medium is and enjoying all the stories told in said medium. But what I truly wish for them is to find a story unfold before their eye over many many years.

    I just caught up with this video (really great btw) and I wanted to say: you're right when you say that Yukimura criticizes christianity and norse religion because they used war and violence as a mean to their ends, and I wanted to add that I also find that here he's criticizing the idea of an afterlife. If on one hand vikings "desire" death as a mean to serve the gods during Ragnarok, on the other you have christians behaving on a certain way to get a reward (going to heaven) after their death. I think Yukimura's message is the one where you talk about the two soldiers thinking about valhalla: do everything you can to make the world a better place for everyone and leave your mark, because in the end there's no true otherwordly reward awaiting you after your death. I think that's also one of the reasons that makes forgiveness such an important theme throughout the manga.

    Happy to see you talk about this manga,Vinland Saga is one of my favorite stories of all time. Aside from the epic battles and wars(which I do love) this story is actually a very human story about a person filled with hatred and revenge,learning to heal and move on while also dealing with the consequences of their past actions. Truly beautiful.

    If you like the character writing, drama and world building of Vinland Saga, you should check out his other manga “Planetes“.
    I feel like it doesn't get enough recognition. Yukimura has such a great way to visually express such a different variety of themes and stage conflicts of characters.
    It's also just 27 chapters long, but longer ones.

    I’m only on season 2 but was the idea that “Christianity propagates warfare” really a key point of the story? To me so far it seems within the story, Christianity is set up to be the foil of Norse religion. I literally just watched one of the latest episodes and they really put a highlight on the Bible and the “pray for your enemy” verse.

    • @mugenbop
      @mugenbop  Год назад +6

      No I think religion can propagate warfare in general, regardless if the good each bring in its values. I think that is what Makoto is highlighting in later chapters after the farm arc

    • @daveyjoneslocker4703
      @daveyjoneslocker4703 Год назад +2

      @@mugenbop gotcha, I’ll have to get further along and see then. I’ve no problem with criticism of specific religions or religion in general in a story but the “religion causes most wars” meme really irks me. It simply isn’t the case. Each culture might justify the sanctity of its actions through religion to the masses, but in fact most wars are for territory, resources and control. Religion can be a tool to control, but it’s rarely ever actually the inciting cause of mass warfare.
      In fact to my amusement, Cnut almost instantly becomes the personification of the “Godless Utopia Seeking Tyrant” meme. He may not actually be lacking belief in God, but his views have shifted to lead him to at least resenting God and have in turn made him all the more maniacal and cruel in seeking the greater good. But again, I’ll have to see how Cnut develops further along in the story as well. Vinland saga is very thought provoking.

    • @mugenbop
      @mugenbop  2 года назад +18

      I disagree it more acknowledges the positives and negatives ofChristianity and Norse religion as a concept when it comes to getting your reward after death.
      Ergo dying in battle honourably the valkyries come and take you to Asgard to fight and the other hand is god taking you to eternal bliss. The manga never infringes on the positive values that each instill, such as being a pacifist or watching after one’s neighbour. Thoughts?

    • @morrislevin6816
      @morrislevin6816 Год назад +8

      Well, I believe it's more than just if "God is real, why is there suffering in the world?" But even if that was the main argument against Christianity, it would still be valid. If there is a all-powerful and all-loving god in the universe, why does suffering exist? Theres no real way to answer this which isnt circular. And at the same time, Vinland Saga expresses criticism of the Norse mythology as well, such as the glorification of war. Its exactly what Thorfinn does that opposes the rest of the vikings and their beliefs. Neither is perfect, and honestly, neither is even preferable.

    • @mrmanju6989
      @mrmanju6989 Год назад +5

      bro, that's the surface level observations that "dumb" characters in the manga make. They have only ever worked for reward. "Love" "God" are not topics so easily tackled, unless you have tiny definition of Love or God
