    The words "Oakland" and "Full Concert" short-circuited my brain for a second before I realized it was just the three songs that have been out forever. The FULL concert has been a holy grail for VH fans for decades.

      @@SchtinkFinga I've heard it was just the three songs. I've also heard the entire show was filmed. I've also heard just the three songs were filmed, but the audio of the full show professionally recorded. At this rate we'll never know, see, or hear it.

      @@TANTRUMGASM Actually, it absolutely can be how it works. The most credible explanation I read originated from a cameraman who was part of the filming. Warner Bros financed it and wanted video shot for the three of the singles off the album. The director was named Bruce Growers or Gowers. Something like that. They wanted the same three songs filmed over multiple nights. The band were directed to wear the same clothes and use the same instruments for continuity in editing, but hey ...Van Halen. Same thing happened on RHRN. They were pranksters. So, the same songs filmed with three cameras over several shows so, like a take in the studio, they could pick and choose what they felt were the best shots, audio, etc during editing. But, supposedly three songs is all Warners paid for. That came from a cameraman. There IS paperwork for the 6/11/81 show from Pacific Title's records for 16 reels of 24 track audio that indicate the masters for The Record Plant and Dupes for LeMobile, both of which were mobile recorders at the time. I've also seen inventory sheets for those three songs but nothing else from those shows. After all this time I think if it existed, SOMETHING would have leaked by now. Some truly amazing stuff has leaked out since Ed's death. But, nothing more from Oakland. I used to believe. But, I've started not to.

      Totally agree. Since he "hearted" your post, I'm going to paste this here in hope he sees it. I'm shadow-banned here on YT. My post I'm pasting here I posted it to him outside your post here, but he won't see it. "Diamond Dave is considered by many to be the GOAT "frontman." In her book, Apolonia Kotero said that Prince was envy of Diamond Dave's stage presence. He got his stage splits from Dave and also got his jumping splits from Dave too. Michael Jackson even applauded Dave when it came to being a frontman. No one has said that about Sammy. Live, technically speaking, no doubt Sammy is a better singer. Dave was too energetic, smoked weed and chain-smoked cigs, snorted coke and drank jack daniels. He was one of us. Unfortunately, his live vocals suffered from that. Ted Templeman (VH's legendary producer) had them focused in the studio since they were on Sony's dime. Noel Monk (their longtime manager) let them cut loose on the road. And cut loose they did. Lol
      Speaking of Ted Templeman. Before seeing VH live with Dave before they signed them, he heard a demo and didn't like Dave's singing and wanted to replace him with Montrose's former singer, Sammy Hagar. Until in1977 on cold and rainy Monday night at The Starwood playing to only 10 people. Ted and Mo Ostin (head of Sony at the time) were sitting up above the crowd in the VIP section. The band didn't know they were there. Ted said that Diamond Dave worked that crowd of only 10 people like it was 10,000 people. After talking with Dave, he KNEW with his energetic personally he was the right frontman for the band. He said Ed and Alex Van Halen were just happy to be playing together in their garage in white shirts, sneakers and blue jeans. It was Dave's vision they could take over the world. He was the driving force in the early years. Ted said he would've made the biggest mistake in rock history had he replace Dave with Sammy. He said Sammy was the better live singer, Dave was the better frontman and lyricists. And about 80 percent of VH fans agree with that and about 95 percent of the rock/metal fans in general, thinks that way too."

    When Ted Templeman heard Van Halen his primary focus was sign them in order to to get Edward in a contract before competition did. He wasn’t particularly fond of Dave to start with. As a matter of fact he suggested Sammy back then. Dave got music lessons and upped his game and finally won over Ted. IMO Dave was a a huge influence on the band. But what I think his biggest attribute was the reputation that he built to make the Van Halen name. Edward had to have Dave for this. Sammy would never have been able to build that reputation the way Dave did. It was ok when he came in later and gave us a different perspective. Kind of like a teenager growing up a little.

    Van Halen had no concept of a separate rhythm and lead guitar in the original Dave years. Eddie would continually play a hybrid of both - so Mikey's playing on bass had to perform as that rhythm guitar and bass role so Eddie was always free to improvise... Great observation!

Slight variation from VH: Chickenfoot / Highway Star. Chickenfoot is a supergroup with Sammy / Mikey and Joe Satriani (a phenomenal guitarist) and Chad Smith (drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers). Amazing musically and similar live energy as Live Without A Net

    This is the Holy Grail of Van Halen concert footage. It is also heavily edited. Background vocals and some of Dave's vocals. I have listened to over 30 Fair Warning shows and they NEVER sounded as good as this version. With that being said, this song was so strong that it was the first encore song on the tour and album on which this song was released. Driving, mean, simply the greatest.

      There are other shows on this tour that sound better IMO, if only because Roth was better than he was on this show. The June 11 th and Madison Square Garden 7/17/81 shows are better. This happens to be the only pro shot one, (?!) so this is what we have. Seems that after this was made they didn’t bother anymore. But Dave had better performances and little changes in his delivery made for better sounding shows.

      @pulsarlights2825 Uhh, it's tools like you that say that crap when Dave was just fine on the first four tours. If you don't like Dave just say it but don't look like an idiot by saying he never sang well live, especially on a video about the Oakland 81 footage.

    • @kevinwilkins3248
      @kevinwilkins3248 2 месяца назад

      @rladen1 Bullshit. This footage was no more doctored than Live Without A Net. There are plenty of soundboard bootleg recordings from the first 3 tours where the band sounded as good or in some shows better than this. There are a couple of audience recordings from the FW tour that are better than this, but unfortunately and obviously the quality of the recordings are much rougher than the professional audio of the Oakland vids.

    • @rladen1
      @rladen1 2 месяца назад +1

      @@kevinwilkins3248 BULLSHIT. I have been a Dave era worshiper for 40 years now. I love them and that era. I am not a homer. I call it like I see it and many others have seen it. It is PLAINLY obvious they doctored up the background vocals and some of Dave's vocals to make it palatable for MTV (these three Oakland videos debuted on MTV in late 1981) and to make it sound VERY GOOD for an MTV video presentation. Watch the whole video carefully. There are multiple times when the background vocals sound almost studio, yet either Mike or Eddie or both of them are not on the mics all the way or even part of the way through the harmony. Same with Dave on at least 2 occasions, there he was singing, but he didn't have the mic close enough or around his mouth to have it sound full. Watch the video closely and you will see that Eddie in one shot is playing another guitar than the one he is shown playing throughout the video. I have 30 or more Fair Warning boots and NONE of them have the vocals sounding near as good. Most of Dave's vocals seem legit, but even he sounds much better than his normal singing on this video. I have over 100 boots from Dave era Halen (most of them are NOT SOUNDBOARD) and yes, the band can sound great at times (at other times no because they were a party band live), but Dave and the background vocals usually do not. The last two tours Dave sounded horrible live and the harmonies not much better. A lot of the time he didn't even try to sing the full lyrics, choosing to cut words out and half ass it. 1984 tour was played at a totally coked out pace that ruined a lot of the show. This is IMO of course. Others may not agree. I call it like I see it and have seen it for over 40 years. It's heavily edited. Ask yourself why do you think they never released a live album or show from Dave era???? Eddie said when asked where the rest of the concert footage is, he claimed that most of it was UNUSABLE and was trashed. This is documented fact. Watch the newly released AWESOME 1984 Donington Concert. He sounded awful, totally out of tune/range, talking through or outright not even trying to sing the lyrics. This was the NORM for him during Diver Down and 1984 tours. Fair Warning was the last tour he actually cared enough to try. Yes, the first three tours he sounded much better and tried more because they were making their name and reputation. Once they reached the mountaintop (towards the end of the FW tour), he stopped caring about how he sounded. It's all right there in audio form.

    Very few people can put that much into a show like David Lee Roth did every single night as an organic rock and roll mouthpiece and athletic showman. Live Without A Net was produced professionally when technology had improved but if you were lucky enough to witness and experience Roth driven Van Halen live, from this time, you saw the absolute best.
    Everything that followed afterwards was less raw, more corporate pop rock album oriented, generic sounding and the vibe live was watered down.
    There is no comparison.
    The sad part is, Van Halen wasn’t captured on film professionally, in the same manner, during this time frame, for generations to appreciate the band’s real chemistry.
    Many believe however, that footage exists.

    Can’t compare the two eras. Or at least can’t have a conversation about them. There’s at least three different kinds of Van Halen fans. You can figure them out. I’m a huge Roth fan and have little use for the Hagar era. I’d be a damn fool to say that live, Dave is a better singer than Sammy tho. Let’s not even talk about now. But I don’t really want to hear anything that Sammy has to sing. He’s the face of VH not being as spicy (not all his fault, the songs started with Ed) I’ve seen Dave Solo and with Van Halen maybe 20 times in my life and the Van Halen shows were always special and magical even though I had a list of five or 10 things that were not right every time, but you didn’t see Van Halen to hear music from a record delivered perfectly, and I’m not just talking about Dave. Dave definitely could have performed songs better. But I saw them with Sammy and as good as singer as he is - I don’t really like his voice, though-He just didn’t have what Dave had commanding a stage. Somehow, even on studio recordings, there was a spirit to me that was more inviting and cooler than Sammy. Dave’s lyrical contribution, and delivery of lyrics and maybe even the way he helped arrange, and what Eddie wrote was a little funkier nastier and meaner whenever Dave’s around. Ed was changing into a slightly different lane when Jump was released and 5150 was him, not Sammy. I think it would have been different but not worse with Dave writing lyrics and singing. Just different. Probably more classic than it is, lol. Gotta remember that most of the songs on the first six albums with Dave were probably written within five years.

    In another timeline, Mike would have been a professional bass player , singing great backgrounds in a band with good songwriters, enjoying the ride. Dave would have gotten famous but it might’ve been a flash in pan relative to his time in VH and what that did for anything he did solo. He’s underrated as a creative person though. Eddie and Alex would have had long careers together in a band with a name that wasn’t as cool as VAN HALEN, since it was Dave’s idea, and they might’ve never noticed what was right under their noses or been too humble to use it. They would have been big, and would have been a band that musicians always have to see when they’re in town, with a bunch of successful records, but they wouldn’t have ever been as HUGE as they were if they didn’t find the magic that they did with Dave. If Dave only had one valuable contribution it was tempo and structure, making songs more danceable and girl-friendly. If it wasn’t for Dave, a Van Halen show might’ve been a sausage fest with guitar players and musicians up against the front of the stage with their arms crossed, staring at Eddie’s hands. And those bands don’t get that huge. They would’ve been your favorite band’s favorite band. They might’ve lasted longer and smoother too.😁😁😁

    Sammy was a more proficient singer; he had better vocal control, more range, and sang WAY better live. I've never been a huge fan of his voice, personally-there's a sort of always-straining sound he's got that sort of reminds me of Michael Bolton-but I can still acknowledge that he always had greater technical skill than Dave. But that's sort of the beside the point, really; people like Dave in sort of the same way they like Mick Jagger or Jim Morrison. Or even punk rock. With a lot of rock music, it's less about being a technically skilled performer and more about are you interesting (Eddie was of course immensely skilled, but more to the point he didn't sound like anyone else). Dave had an interesting-sounding voice, a great rock scream, and really weird sensibilities about music and songwriting that made Van Halen into a quirkier band. They got much more conventional with Sammy. I'll always wish Dave sang better live and wasn't such a control freak (Noel Monk's autobiography goes into this a lot), but without him those first six albums sound much more like standard rock (albeit with a great guitarist).

In her book, Apolonia Kotero said that Prince was envy of Diamond Dave's stage presence.
And about 80 percent of VH fans agree with that and about 95 percent of the rock/metal fans in general, thinks that way too.

    There were only two greatest front men ever. David Lee Roth & Freddie Mercury. End of discussion.

    Sammy was a good frontman. He did it solo, he did it with Montrose. BUT...one thing DLR brought to a Van Halen show was CHICKS. Go to a Metalica or Pantera concert, and the only women there are going to be hardcore metal chicks there for the music. The women loved Diamond Dave! I've been to a lot of concerts, and the Van Halen ones were the ones that left me the most jazzed. I wonder what Van Halen would have done if there were no DLR or Mike. You lose Dave, you lose a huge part of VH's sound, the showmanship, and a shit ton of women fans. No Mike, who knows if you get a guy willing to play what the song requires to set up or back up the greatest guitarist in the world at the time. And then there's the unmistakable background vocals. Van Halen had it going on! I hope you listen to their last album called, "A Different Kind of Truth." There are some smoking songs on there.

    Maybe if Dave practiced his vocal chords more than his kicking and jumping, his backup singers wouldn't sound ten times better than the lead singer.

    Hagar better than Roth on stage? Are you on crack cocaine? That statement defies all logic. And VH have sold 34 million albums with Roth as compared to 18 million with Hagar. Not to mention the 2007 reunion with Roth dwarfed the 2004 reunion with Hagar in every way possible including: average tix sold per night. Total tix sold for the tour, and gross revenue. It wasn't even close. The '07 reunion with Roth was VH's biggest tour ever by a mile.
    VHs legacy as a band will always lie with David Lee Roth.
    I cant even watch your channel after an asinine comment like that. Good lord help us.
