  • In this video, I share with you how I learned to enjoy boring on-foot missions in Elite Dangerous Odyssey. They can be quite fun when you find a way to enjoy the activity. I found a neat way to enjoy these missions by using stealth tactics and now I play these missions all the time.
    Do you enjoy playing on-foot missions? Leave a comment and let me know.

    Some of the most fun I have had is playing nonviolent missions together with a friend, especially since we discovered you can get one person to distract the NPCs by suddenly breaking out in a tap dance or just waving and pointing at them, while the other person does the illegal thing unnoticed, because everyone is looking at the weirdo.

    What really helped me was learning that you could buy level 3 gear from the Pioneer Vendor. I waited for the server reset, then visited about 50 different stations and found a lot of decent G3 suits and weapons. This made all the difference in being able to enjoy the ground missions. Now I’m having fun exploring the various locations, fighting in ground combat zones, and running different types of ground missions. There’s a ton of content in Odyssey.

    One thing I also like about the on foot missions.
    It's much easier to do illegal missions (like the ones usually given out from an anarchy faction) without getting a bounty as you can usually do the stealth approach.

    I repudiate the notion that Elite’s FPS combat is poorly done. That may be a judgement from those people who play a lot of contemporary specialised FPS games, but for someone like me who hasn’t played much FPS since the original Crysis in 2008, FPS in Elite is just fine and a lot of fun. Yes, even running and gunning. And I love the fully engineered TK Zenith laser pistol and the AR-50 kinetic battlefield rifle (both with extra range and extended mags). I'm sort of tired of hearing, the much repeated, how terrible Elite Dangerous Odyssey AI is. I mean what FPS are you guys playing with this absolutely amazing AI? I'd actually love to know... I'm an FPS lover, tho I do dabble in 3rd person shooters. Is Elite's AI amazing? No. Is it bad? No. To be fair I'm only considering it's AI in combat because that's what matters to me. It can be as stupid as it wants in a station.
    In combat it actually does some smart things, sometimes. They avoid choke points, break for cover when their shields pop (sometimes full on squad retreat and reposition), higher ranked units that use rockets lead you (as do snipers), they quick swap between secondary weapon for a kill shot usually a tormentor instead of reloading. I mean the list goes on-- I'd be glad to list more.
    While there is always room for improvement with AI I'm just at a loss for what AI people could possibly be comparing it to because as someone who loves FPS, admittedly primarily pvp, I'm at times legitimately impressed by it in Elite. Especially when I have an AI side step my shots or strafe left and right to try and throw me off. Pretty much every shooter AI can be cheesed and Elite is no different however what we have isn't particularly bad. My opinion is that the majority of players in Elite don't play shooters, particularly FPS so they don't actually know how bad AI can get in shooters. Someone, Yamiks most likely, said the AI was terrible so now everyone just repeats that the AI is terrible. Again it isn't some amazing ground breaking AI but it does have a few tricks that at times make me smile.
    Are there pathing issues here and there? Sure but mostly in stations and not in active combat. I've never seen an NPC perma sprint into a box or wall-- I've seen them break and stand still tho in elite which IMO is better.
    Ultimately I'm not trying to shit on your content, I just kind of dig Odyssey gameplay and I'm glad you found a way to do it that you don't hate. I like doing it that way too sometimes and it's how I initially did it. It's true the credits pay is low, but you don't do them for credits. It's all about the materials for mods. Ok rant over.

    • @lootandgrind
      @lootandgrind  Год назад +1

      In the video, you can see an example of that. One of the guards spot me while I was moving and it came to scan me. By that time I had moved to a different place than where he spotted me but he kept scanning at that spot and then turned half way through the process.
      I haven't played a lot of on-foot content so you may be correct in this context. But I have seen many instances like that. Sometimes the guards will just swarm in together like a bunch of ants and I would hop on my SRV and ram them down. And I have ran past guards many times without them even noticing. It's funny how stupid the AI is sometimes. But I'm okay with it. I know this is not an FPS game.

    • @brionicgaming
      @brionicgaming Год назад +2

      @@lootandgrind So I guess I'm looking at this in a different way than you, and many others. Scripted/Random events like scanning have little to do with their AI IMO. What you are specifically describing isn't an AI issue as much as it's a communication issue between client and server. If the AI goes to scan you but instead shoots you in the face killing you, assuming you didn't do anything to elicit that response, that's an AI issue. Yes, Elite has a lot of NPC scripting issues, specifically with dialogue for example if you stealth kill an NPC near another NPC that is unaware of the kill they respond "It's just you and me now" without turning hostile. To me that's a poorly written script not an AI problem. The AI itself is reacting in a way that is consistent with what you are doing, its scripting/dialogue options just don't match up or make much sense.
      As for swarming an SRV, that's actually the correct way they should handle it. Vehicles should almost always take priority agro, I can agree that they probably should also prioritize maintaining cover a bit more but it's somewhat irrelevant as a seasoned commander missile locking and tilting the shot up slightly before firing will counter that. Beyond that it's important to note that the NPC's do have levels, if you'd like to experience the varying levels I'd recommend doing a protect mission, particularly the illegal ones as Omnipol are more heavily armed. SRV's will be swarmed and dispatched rather quickly. In fact IMO it's best to hide your SRV during those missions if you want to use it as a place to restock or swap loadouts, same goes for thargoid revenants.
      My point isn't to take away from your video at all but rather to just say that nothing is gained by parroting that fdevs AI is bad as it puts attention on the wrong problem. It also makes us as a community look ignorant and in turn might actually cause them to ignore us as the consensus that "we don't know what we're talking about" might be formed. To me the AI, in combat (where it's making decisions) is quite good and it's obvious to me that someone at fdev put a lot of effort into what kind of decisions the AI can make in battle. It could only get better if they started thinking 3 dimensionally and jumping on roofs and fighting in the air to a similar degree that we do, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they worked on that but decided it would be too chaotic (which is something I welcome) and opted to just keep them on the ground.
      In games with story or at the very least some PvE elements like The Outer Worlds, Fallout, Halo, Killzone, Mass Effect, Tomb Raider, Titanfall, Far Cry, Borderlands, plus more I've played their NPC dialogue is spot on and their scripted events are great especially when the NPCs are first deployed into battle. Those scripted events make them feel more alive however the one thing they all have in common is after the battles start their AI are absolutely retarded. Nearly all of them will single file into choke points and have very few decision making abilities beyond attack and advance. Occasionally you get a retreat script but only from specific units with specific checks and in those scenarios you can use that against them because their retreat/flee mechanic is always the same.
      One of my first experiences in Odyssey was with a friend and a mission went sideways so we decided "screw it we'll just fight our way out". We set up a choke point in the power building with the plan to just mow them down, that's how it works in almost every shooter... Their ranged stayed back and 2 guards with shottys ran in and dropped our shields we were surprised and quickly fell back to the generator room. In that room we stayed at the closest door and dropped a barrier to try to take advantage of their pathing and again set up a choke point... They pincered us and attacked from both directions. We died... It was a valuable lesson as to what kind of game we were playing.
      Outside of that I've witnessed the AI do a lot of interesting things in combat, to name a few:
      -Various Flavors of Pincer attacks
      -Short range weapons taking point
      -Consistently using cover
      -Retreat/Take Cover on Reload
      -Weapon Swap instead of reloading
      -Strafing and Crouching to avoid shots
      -Shotgun rushing (very common)
      -NPCs maintaining defensive positions
      -NPCs leap frogging and advancing with cover
      -NPCs falling back if too exposed, except when SRV is present as they tend to push the attack. Same with landed ships, they will push into the shields.
      My point is just that the AI is actually making a lot of decisions and a lot of the time it's really well done. Where it all tends to go wrong is during ground High Ground CZs where it can bug out and all NPCs will stand still, assuming due to the server getting overwhelmed. Again that isn't as much an AI issue as it is a server issue. Ultimately I just want the criticism directed to the right problems. NPCs need scripting improvements with a few additional checks, server communication needs improvement and that's not exclusive to on-foot things. There needs to be improved redundancy for when missions bug out, meaning you won't fail a mission because something loaded/rendered incorrectly. It's not perfect by any means and there is room for improvement but it's no where near as bad as many make it out to be and the majority of people who bash it never wanted it in the first place.
      Edit://
      Shit I wrote a novel. Lol.

    FPS has never been my thing. Maybe if there were more options in on foot game play style, I’d be able to find something I enjoy.
    I’m satisfied with the missile launcher approach until I get some half decent gear and a few engineers unlocked. Then we’ll see.
    Side note: I have read (and to some degree experienced) that locked settlement lockers don’t seem to have much actually usable materials. Once you’ve stocked up on the few useful things that are in the locked lockers of each settlement type, you can probably just waltz past them without bothering. Locked boxes in settlements are even worse. And I think the damage can actually draw attention to there being someone pillaging, causing the guards to start attacking anything that moves.

    The rewards for missions SUCK. They outright ABSOLUTELY SUCK. Here's a nice comparison: I can travel to a system, land on a planet and scan 3 types of biology and get nearly 60,000,000 if I pick the right plants, this maybe takes me about 45 minutes give or take... Then I go to do an on-foot mission at a settlement, it takes me OVER 45 minutes to get anything done (including travel time) and by the time I've completed the mission, I get either 100,000 credits or a TINY material reward. It's so unbalanced, you should never need to do on-foot missions. There's zero incentive besides "fun", which lets face it - It's not full of.
