I have an 02 4wd I bought 2 years ago. Gave $1500 at a used car lot with 175k. The only mechanical thing I’ve had to do was rebuild the clutch in the ac pump. It has the 4.7, the 4wd works great although it is the electronic on or off style. It is very peppy. I’m also 5’11” 295lbs and I’m comfortable driving it. 3 things I do recommended for anyone getting one. Be religious on oil changes. The other is swap the TCM for one out of a jeep. The 4speed auto in the Durango is the same as the 5 in a jeep. I gained 4mpg and got better shift points with firmer shifts. And change out lifters (lash adjusters)on any 4.7 with over 150k. They are a common failure point in these motors. I’m so fond of my rig I’m working on a deal to get a 02 2wd 4.7 with a slight knock (I’m guessing lifter issue).
Thanks for the tip. I didn’t know about the Tcm for these trucks. I have to change the ball joints on mine and the wheel bearing since they are start to grind.

Tbh, any other V8 you will find, is going to get very similar, one of the reasons they are trying to phase V8's out to meet the BS global gov "climate change" nonsense. Problem is the V6 and V4's with the turbo can't touch it, once you get up to speed or towing anything, the mpg shoots down less than the V8's. However, I might need some tuning to adjust the fuel usage, monitor the short / long term fuel trim on an OBD II, good chance something like a vacuum leak, fuel pressure regulator ect, is making it use more fuel that it needs.
I have had two early 318 V8 models Durango's. They were great - the 3rd row seat model was very functional. The best year was 2003 when Dodge put disk brakes on the rear. If you can find a southern truck with no rust - you can drop in a new engine and transmission and have a great truck.

I love mine, 2002 SLT with the 5.9 and max tow package. The only correction to the video I'd like to make is, its not quite sitting on the Dakota frame. The Dakota is only boxed in the front, then regular C-channel from the middle all the way to the rear. Where the Durango has a bespoke fully boxed frame front to rear. So the Durango is much, MUCH stronger. But yeah these things are awesome, as far as reliability the engines and axles will last you for ever 40 50 maybe even 60 years (I'm not kidding, I've been around old Chryslers with original 360 v8's and they just run forever if you keep oil in them. The only thing to watch for is the transmissions can over-heat easily towing, so if your going to tow heavy get an aftermarket transmission cooler, OR just send it into a 4x4 shop and have the shop build your transmission, for 1500 bucks you'll have a trans that can tow all day long with zero issues. Use Marvel Mystery Oil in your gas and it will lubricant your valves & upper cylinders to prevent wear & tear and prevent future problems, it also cleans and keep the engine cool.
I haven’t had any major issues yet. My current issues are burning oil due to old valve seals and tranny in 3rd gear due to shift solenoid. I’d check the oil and coolant. Make sure it shifts fine and look for any leaks and weird noises. It’s an old vehicle so it’s going to have some issues. But as long it had maintenance done it should be good. Good luck!
handle just loose/swinging with nothing happening? If so, there is a metal latch that connects, the plastic connection tends to break over time, just grab pliers or the like, grip it and lift up. You can pull the whole thing out after that and address a fix for it.

Miss my 01 Durango, looking for another. Only thing I liked better was my 2012 JGC fuel economy compared to it.
These things are sweet. But my 00' has the 5.2😁and 2WD. But it's still sweet and I love it
I got a 2000 5.9 2wd Durango for $800 by someone who really was tryna get rid of it spent $209 on 2 02 sensors being fixed and $230 a month later on passenger break caliper had a pig tail problem I fixed that myself for $20 bucks now I jus gotta fix the serpentine belt it’s squeaking and he’ll be perfect running the AC never worked just the defroster idk why it’s messed up but I can say it’s really reliable worth every penny on fixing I have a whole calendar for maintenance on my Durango bought it at 222,000 miles still working strong and dependable don’t give up on your Durango they are worth it I’m keeping mine to my grave no vehicle had my back like this truck I never liked suv or trucks until I got mine I camp out of it and pick up trailers with it it’s the ultimate man SUV can’t wait to lift mine and make it more off road
Should be better on gas mileage since it’s 2wd.
If you can fix them yourself then these trucks are the great. Mine was going to the junkyard but I bought it off the guy that was going to do that so that’s why it’s still here on the road
Buen trabajo paisano
Many thanks for the informations from europe :)
No problem!
I'm a Chrysler guy, but you lost me when you said 4.7, I like the LA Engines 5.2 & 5.9
Still a Good SUV
☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
My sister owns a black 2000 Durango v8 and she will not give it up lol😂I don't blame her tho
4 kids got plenty of room
They are perfect!! 😊
Great video…
Glad you enjoyed it!
First gen is the Best with the 5.9 magnum V8 engine
Thank u about nice videos, my question , is she a reliable car for heavy daily use? Iam going to buy 2002 , 5.2??
It’s been a solid reliable machine. Easily put 30k miles in the two years I owned it. I would say as long as you keep up with oil change and maintenance it should last
The only thing, when you said in 2000 they cut out the 5.2L, that actually is not the case. My 2000 has the 5.2L
Hi , that's right , I going to buy one 2002 and 5.2 magnum from Switzerland and 220 k kilometer not mile , 4×4 , ,
Its a nice durango. But me personally i wont own another one with the 4.7, if you own a dirango get the 3.9, 5.2 or 5.9 if you want a long lasting durable engine. I own a 99 slt 5.9 durango. And an 02 R/T Durango. Love them both
I have a 2001 and it's mint
I always use windshield cover to save the dash.
Buy 303 protectant online. It’s a white bottle with 303 circled in orange. This product was made to protect aircraft dashboards from the harsh sun.
Use Marvel Mystery Oil in your gas and it will lubricant your valves & upper cylinders to prevent wear & tear and prevent future problems, it also cleans and keep the engine cool.
8:48 that looks exactly like my car…
I am thinking about buying a Durango I am just worried about reliability have you had any issues
Good luck!
My glove compartment wont open. Any ideas on how to open it?
handle just loose/swinging with nothing happening? If so, there is a metal latch that connects, the plastic connection tends to break over time, just grab pliers or the like, grip it and lift up. You can pull the whole thing out after that and address a fix for it.
3:54 - Did you say "churrokeys"? 😂 It's "chair o key," and that paeticular image was a Grand Chair-o-key. The churrokey never came with a V8.
So who honestly had the Durango 4.7 trouble free ? Anyone else claims the 4.7 magnum is garbage and transmissions are nightmares
4.7 is the worst engine. 5.2 is reliable but the 5.9 is what you want, very strong and reliable. Transmission is strong too, although it’s strange jeeps got the improved 5 speed while the Durango still had the 4 speed until production ended.
@@reddstool1023 Not sure what you are talking about but I have the 4.7 and its a strong reliable motor and other people I know who had that motor before never had issues. The garbage motors were the hemis in the later gens.
How about the case of water..lol😂
It’s just chill as a movie prop haha
THANGS BRO I MIGHT BUY ONE OF THESE TODAY WITH A REBUILT ENGINE I'VE ONLY 85000 MILES THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
360 5.9 is funner Magmum gas milage
The only reliable one is the 5.2 the other engines are garbage
Why 52? And is it suitable car for daily use?
