@@themaskedmusician4846 I just bought a 98 Durango 3 weeks ago. Just checked the actual gas mileage mine gets yesterday. It might get the 17mpg "highway" if I drive 50 or 55mph
My dad brought one for the family 2003 and remember how cool I thought it was. Living in Sweden big suv's like this was quite rare so it really stood out from the crowd with its epic styling and V8 rumble. Since he brought it we have traveld with all over Scandinavia and even Iceland. Sadly it was in a smal crash some time ago so need some love before it can be on the road again.
I snagged a 2000 5.9L V8 Magnum with 115k miles. I'm very happy with the performance. It has a 21-22 gallon tank capacity and I'm able to squeeze 15mpg combined. She is thirsty but I love the v8. It has a few flaws being it's 24 yrs old now but I'm slowly fixing those and it makes me more proud everytime I do.
I have a 1998 slt with almost 180,000 on the odometer. Still kicks ass on and off road. I can't bring myself to get ride of it. I am looking for a new truck but I'm going to keep my Durango.
That front grill always had such a happy look to it! With the turn signals below the headlights yet still in the housing, and the little smile on the bumper, and the overall rounded yet square look to it, combined with the typical raised suspension of SUVs, this whole truck just feels very cute, but still tough and cool! It pulls off being both a purpose built workhorse/family hauler and a cute friendly vehicle filled with personality almost flawlessly!
I own an 02 with a 5.9 and I just hit 159k on it and im getting ready for the second full service of its life. my parents bought it new and I got it when i turned 16. It has been daily driven every day of its life and it atill to this day makes me proud to own such a magnificent piece of machinery and memories.
Love my 03, Interior is a bit nicer than the pre '00 ones and the 4.7 has a lot of grunt. Plus the 545rfe 5 speed over the 4 speed makes for quiet highway cruising and it shifts smooth when you're cruising and sharp when you punch it
My dad bought one of these in 2003. He gave it to me 7 years later with about 35,000 miles on it. I drove it till 2018 when it had 186,000 miles on it. My daughter drove it for a year and now my brother in law has it and it is still a great runner and a very comfortable ride. Major issues? Left exhaust manifold broke a bolt. Fix was about $2000 that was 6 years ago. No issues since. Two sets of Front Hubs of course and one new set of ball joints. One Left hand CV joint replacement. Steering Shaft U Joint replacement. Beyond that, it was brakes, oil, and tires. Couldn't get it stuck. Hauled everything I needed and pulled my trailer like it wasn't there. Of course when dad gave it to me he said "Son, this will pass anything but a gas station..." Boy was he right. I now have a 2011 Durango (picked it up 2 years ago with 14k miles on it, virtually showroom new) and all of the teething problems had already been fixed (ps pump, alternator, visors, fuel relay...) and so far has been an incredible vehicle.
We love our 2000 Durango, we bought it used in 2007 from Carmax. It's just turned 150,000 miles and has been very reliable in the 17 years we've owned it.
When I had my '03 Durango with the 4.7L, I was averaging 17mpg, mostly highway, with it. On longer trips I could get close to 19mpg. I really miss having it and will be looking for another one in a couple of months, this time I want to get a 4x4 model with a 5.9L.
@themaskedmusician4846 no I haven't. I ended up getting a Grand Caravan and ran it for about 18 months until the trans went out. I definitely still want another Durango tho
I'm glad to see a review on the original Durango! These are great midsize SUVs, and you nailed them pretty well. I have to admit though, the 5.2 seemed more like my old 4.7 version than anything close to the 5.9 I currently have since it took forever to get to 60.

This exact model and color was my first vehicle ever 😍 still my favorite all time SUV. It made me a dodge fan. 3 of the 4 vehicles I’ve owned in my life were dodge. 99 Durango, 06 Dakota, 14 Chevy Cruze, and now a brand new 2023 Challenger (always wanted one)
Just got a 2000 with a 5.9L and its a blast to drive. It pisses me off when people bitch about gas mileage. Want better gas mileage stay off the loud pedal. My son's 2010 Dodge Ram with the 5.7L Hemi gets 11.2 mpg in the city with MDS / VCT but its 400 HP.
My 99 D is my baby. 360 stock except for a real shaker and fiberglass hood. I used to beat on him but now at 25 years and 134,000 miles I treat him much better. I'll never get rid of my D.
Love my 03 Durango it’s been a great first car with no big issues over the 3 years I’ve had it. Only thing to complain about is gas ofc and idk if it’s just mine but I have a ton of wind noise
Thanks for a PERFECT review! Your the man! I’m thinking of getting one as a roller so I can put my 07 ram 5.7 hemi in it. I’m hoping at the end of the day she’ll be worth it’s weight in mud and family time!
Dodge Durango always was pretty rare here in Europe, but in my city there was two of first generation. I like this car beside of Jeeps Cherokee and G. Cherokee from 90s.
I have a 99 with the 5.9L V8. They do have a classic design to them. I like how it is a truck based suv. Having a big V8 with solid body on frame construction makes it capable rig for towing. A department where other midsize Suvs fall short. Mine has been in the same family since new. Not the most reliable vehicle, but certainly one of the coolest!
Gas Mileage with the 5.9 is around 11 city 15 highway. Sometimes more or less is possible. Reliability isn't the best, but it is not British level of leaving you stranded. The biggest issue with these is transmissions. Mine has been rebuilt twice now, second time was just recent. Other than that engines are solid (if you get the 5.9 or 5.2), just do regular maintenance. Electrical issues can come up from time to time. That's the issues I have had to deal with oudside of normal wear and tear.
That's a good buy, make sure everything checks out. However the RTs are good especially with those miles. You get the 5.9 and 3.92 axle ratio. I unfortunately have the 3.55 that came with most of the slts. However I plan on swapping mine. Anyways good luck, and most of all have fun.
@@DanielHernandez-lr1yx get a 4.7l 14-18 mpg, very dependable if you keep good maintenance. solid rust free frame still too... I will keep it forever and repair anything as needed.
When this came out in 98 ,, was happy for dodge to have a badass SUV showing its adopted cousin jeep hey your not the only one. These r my favorite Durangos . got a commander and I hate the electronics . so I'm getting a 99 Durango . one for city , one for the muscle. This is a tank like the original grand wagoneer. Cant wait to get mine.
I got a 2003 durango and it got laid on its side in a wreck and still running and drives like nothing happened sustained body damage and still working on getting it fixed up
my family had a 1999 when i was little. the transmission went out and my dad didnt want to fix it. now its sitting rotting and needs much more than a transmission now.
We have a 2000 silver like this with a 4.7, it’s been pretty strong and it’s a slt with black interior, engine was rebuilt quite a while ago, when it only had like 60k miles, it’s at almost 160k miles now, so engine has about 100k, it’s stuck in 4wd high though, wish I had time and knowledge to fix it or get it fixed. Every time I put it in neutral and try to put it into 2wd I don’t feel it click and I’ll shift to drive or reverse and it won’t go, like it’s stuck in neutral, then I shift back to park and hear a pretty gnarly grinding noise, then when I shut the engine off it stops grinding and when I start back up everything is fine no grinding, but if I don’t put it back into 4wd high when I’m in park or the engine is off, it won’t go when in reverse or drive and will grind when in park again. Figured it could be a broke linkage or something wrong with the transfer case, but I honestly don’t know.
I’d maybe check the drive shaft? We just replaced mine after having some issues. It would click when we would reverse and when we got it looked at we found the shaft was completely broke. It’ll take no time to fix
On the left side of motor there is a small hose on a air intake remove the hose and see if fixes problem. I think thats what it is called. When standing& facing under the hood. If i have hose on, truck has low idling issues
I have a 2003 4.7L SLT 182K miles and runs strong a but I'm not sure when I'll need engine work to pass NJ state inspection?... Any ideas? I like the video, thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to video this and post. I bought a 2001 R/T and have just been trying to learn about it. pro`s & con`s ? going to use for trout fishing near streams or camping, not a rock crawler but ez , was wondering about towing a 7x12x7 cargo trailer making nto a camper ?
I was a little concerned about the amount or road noise in the cab of my Dakota that I bought last week, after listening to the road noise in this video I think I'm OK. Just need to replace my speakers...
I have a 2003 Dodge Durango SLT v8 Magnum and it's a little bit old and has a lot of rust and most people say that rust is a good idea to get a new one
Hello first of all great review on the Durango liked the way you described it... Im from mexico and I'm thinking bout buying one... I love the looks and style hope you can give me some tips about what too look closely before getting it... Greetings dude
The light dial for interior lights. When turning off by 😊dial only turn until after 1 click. Not sure exactly which as im not sitting in truck. Figured this out as my battery would be dead. I tend not to use and no kids are aloud to touch dial.
Dodge is good about bad rust. We always spray ours down after driving on the roads that are salt treated. That’s the easiest way to ensure rust doesn’t happen so quick.
My dad drives a 99 Durango and he is getting 18 miles per gallon of gas if he was to fill it up at the beginning of the month and if he was still working he may go half way through the month then would have to get more gas and he had a something on that saved him the gas and we had to replace the factory original computer and Right now we are replacing the original heater ac unit and radiator and few other parts and the old girl is over 250k miles on her and we are thinking about going from 15 inch rims to 16 inch rims and we was told we would have to replace the rotors and brakes and hubs and I'm thinking about putting a 7 round rv trailer plug on it cuz you never know when u would have to pull a trailer with that plug
@@masterthotslayer9601 2020 and still driving mine just about everywhere honestly. Really good vehicles. We’re just now replacing all the original stock parts on it from natural wear and tear. I’m in love with it
I am interested in buying one that they are selling is 1998, and from the outside it looks excellent, but in the photographs that they sent me, and where you can see the engine, I can see that it looks cardan! Is that normal in all the Durangos of that year?

Just got a 2000 with a 5.9L and its a blast to drive. It pisses me off when people bitch about gas mileage. Want better gas mileage stay off the loud pedal. My son's 2010 Dodge Ram with the 5.7L Hemi gets 11.2 mpg in the city with MDS / VCT but its 400 HP.
I have that 1999 Durango. And I am having issues with the transmission. But over all I like it. If I can get the transmission to work.
Check linkage
My 99 D is my baby. 360 stock except for a real shaker and fiberglass hood. I used to beat on him but now at 25 years and 134,000 miles I treat him much better. I'll never get rid of my D.
I have a 01 Durango and love it
I just bought a 1998 Durango a couple hours ago
Well done ;-)
Love my 03 Durango it’s been a great first car with no big issues over the 3 years I’ve had it. Only thing to complain about is gas ofc and idk if it’s just mine but I have a ton of wind noise
Thanks for a PERFECT review! Your the man! I’m thinking of getting one as a roller so I can put my 07 ram 5.7 hemi in it. I’m hoping at the end of the day she’ll be worth it’s weight in mud and family time!
Glad I could help. Good luck!
Good GS go I am a mind fucking mind fucking
Dodge Durango always was pretty rare here in Europe, but in my city there was two of first generation. I like this car beside of Jeeps Cherokee and G. Cherokee from 90s.
I’m looking at one right now, it’s an 01 with the 5.9
I just bought a 2003 dodge durango n so far really happy. Bought to camp in
I have a 99 with the 5.9L V8. They do have a classic design to them. I like how it is a truck based suv. Having a big V8 with solid body on frame construction makes it capable rig for towing. A department where other midsize Suvs fall short. Mine has been in the same family since new. Not the most reliable vehicle, but certainly one of the coolest!
How bad is gas mileage? What are the issues you've found? I'm thinking about getting one.
@@nonoiscool98 thank you for the info. I'm looking at a very low miles (around 30k) 2001 RT with the 5.9 and AWD.
Just picked up a 2003. Needs some body work but engine and transmission still 💪
When this came out in 98 ,, was happy for dodge to have a badass SUV showing its adopted cousin jeep hey your not the only one. These r my favorite Durangos . got a commander and I hate the electronics . so I'm getting a 99 Durango . one for city , one for the muscle. This is a tank like the original grand wagoneer. Cant wait to get mine.
I got a 2003 durango and it got laid on its side in a wreck and still running and drives like nothing happened sustained body damage and still working on getting it fixed up
‘98 v8 magnum 5.9ltr Durango 4wd 256,000 miles minor maintenance. Still a Tank of a little truck
Thank you, I am looking into a 2001 durango and this video helped a lot. :)
my family had a 1999 when i was little. the transmission went out and my dad didnt want to fix it. now its sitting rotting and needs much more than a transmission now.
It’ll take no time to fix
they get so unbelievably hot in the summer but they are SO GOOD
I always loved these... Especially in burgundy!
iwoww 562 agreed
Yes I got a burgundy 01 love it
I love my burgundy Dango. He rocks!.
Dango for life!
That's why I nicknamed mine! It's Dango the Durango.
Good review on the Durango I have a1999 still runs great keep up the good work were was filmed love the woods
I have a 1999 Durango and i will never sell it runs and drives 100%.
On the left side of motor there is a small hose on a air intake remove the hose and see if fixes problem. I think thats what it is called. When standing& facing under the hood. If i have hose on, truck has low idling issues
I still have my two wheel drive 2000 SLT with a 5.9 liter. It only has 106.000 miles on it.
I'm so sad I wrecked mine. Really nice, functional cars, that last forever. They handle the Alaskan winters like CHAMPS
I love my durango, instead of the grey interior mine has the tan/beige interior which looks incredibly good especially with that color on it
I own 200” dodge Durango with a cherry bomb muffler and I can’t get over how loud it is
I got a 2014 and not a lot has changed since 1998 😎
My first vehicle I ever drove was a 2000 Dodge Durango I love that motherfucker in to this date it is the second favorite I’ve ever owned
Pshhh them 5.2L got some pony’s 🤣 , plus I love that classic idling sound
Just got a 2000 5.2 SLT to pull a vintage 1965 travel trailer ... seeing so many differing specs on tow capacity - any insight?!?
@@untilyouknow6955 may wanna look into a new transmission of your towing😂, but it should be fine . It’s got the power just not best transmission
Dodge Durango Beautiful Car And Strong 💜
I have a 2003 4.7L SLT 182K miles and runs strong a but I'm not sure when I'll need engine work to pass NJ state inspection?... Any ideas?
I like the video, thanks.
My 2000 Durango, is old like me and had to have some work done over the years. but it's staying til we go....😂
Thanks for taking the time to video this and post.
I absolutely love my 01
I have a 1999 with I 5.2 heat don't work but it still breathes
My 5.9 averages 9.2 mpg.. still love it though lol
Are you in big tires?? That is definitely not running right if it’s that bad
انت ممتاز جدا وطريقة الوصف بالترجمه للعربيه

شكرا لك .
I have a 2000 SLT with 4.7 and I'm getting 14.5 per gallon so??? Not to bad...🤗
98 5.2 at 11.9 better than me 😂
I get 13mpg and have the 5.2
How is the speaker system from factory.
I have a 2003 Dodge Durango SLT v8 Magnum and it's a little bit old and has a lot of rust and most people say that rust is a good idea to get a new one
What’s your gas mileage look like? If it’s the 5.9 liter
Haha idk I’ve ever heard anyone call the cross hair grille a criss cross grille. Still good review though! 👍
I own a 99 5.9
Love my durango
Just put some kenda mt2 muugd tires on it
Mine is in "intense pearl blue "
What’s your gas mileage look like with the 5.9?
Hello first of all great review on the Durango liked the way you described it... Im from mexico and I'm thinking bout buying one... I love the looks and style hope you can give me some tips about what too look closely before getting it... Greetings dude
you know, when you do an acceleration test you’re supposed to put the pedal all the way down
If only they kept the 5.9 engine on the Chrysler aspen it would have been a big seller
Thank you, very informative. Any idea why the 1999 has a battery drain
The light dial for interior lights. When turning off by 😊dial only turn until after 1 click. Not sure exactly which as im not sitting in truck. Figured this out as my battery would be dead. I tend not to use and no kids are aloud to touch dial.
Love the 4wd! In Wyoming!
It is good looking
Surprising not alot of rust. The ones I see today , go over one bump it will crumble to pieces.
Salt if you don't live in places with salt they don't rust like that
@@pepeiann True pepe
Rocker panels are the most command spots for rust, and the bottom edge of the hatch.
Yeh they do rust, I dont drive mine in the winter for that same reason.
Dodge is good about bad rust. We always spray ours down after driving on the roads that are salt treated. That’s the easiest way to ensure rust doesn’t happen so quick.
Great review, but why the plural "Interiors"?
There is only 1 vehicle with 1 interior..
2:05 it wasn’t the wind it was part of the design
I love Durangos! 😂
Where do you find the tire jack?
Newer Durangos show that under 2nd row seats passenger side
I’m looking a this as a first car. Would you recommend?
Gas mileage is terrible but otherwise a great option if you need a bit of space or something with some power.
Nice radio too.
I love the dodge durango ♥️😏👌🏾
Malik Arnold do they suck as reliability lookin at one
Master Thot Slayer naw If you keep up on the maintenance it’s flawless!
The 1st gen Durangos have always been my favorite, I've always liked the look of the 1st gen. the 2nd and 3rd gen durangos don't look that good to me honestly
I like those rims. Nice review.
287 V8 4.7 was a good engine
Got one with a NV3500 manual transmission swapped in haha
Im gonna try and retro fit a dodge chalkenger gas cap on my Durango,,maybe make video
