If Clifford the Big Red Dog was a vehicle:
exactly !!!! HA!
Hey don’t compare him to this hunk of a car
looks like a old bulldog that is begging to die
I always thought they looked like piglets 😂
I have a 2006 4.7 AWD with 197K on it... suffers from serious rust, but runs good and great in winter and off-pavement...
Only problem is 15mpg, tops.
Also, with both rows of rear seats down, there is plenty of room to lie down... I have taken it camping(by myself), beats the hell outta sleeping in a tent!
Check that rear diff seal. Just sayin'
My mom had one of these for a while, and I'm not gonna lie. i liked it, especially the sounds of the v8
My ex's sister bought one with the 5.7 V8 and I can not tell you how many times she had to ask her mom for gas money. I just could not wrap my head as to why she did not buy something more sensible like a CR-V or an Escape as she had two kids, no need for the third row.
Or a earlier Durango
I totally forgot they offered the 5.7, I thought they only offered the 4.7 but I think I was getting that mixed up with the Dakota
woman logic
This is a blast from the past for me right here! My family had one of these when I was a kid and it was the same color too
Everyone has forgotten about this generation Durango hahaha.
People either love the first or the third gen durangos. This gen has largely been forgotten lol.
Just curious... What was "hahaha" or "lol" about that comment?
@@doug6191get a life
This is true. My friend had a 5.3L Magnum 1998 Durango for like 2-3 years, then he bought a brand new '06, which he still has (actually he just bought a Florida special for dirt cheap because valve ring drop on two cylinders) but I do remember the '98 fondly, even though that was like 20 years ago....
It was regrettable from this gen’s debut
Shit I didn't realize these were a thing into one day in the parking lot at work I realize the red Aspen wasn't a Aspen. Also I about the same time I realize some of our runway cars were this Gen of Durango
I had one of these at work since it was brand new (2008). It was an absolute dog, it would bounce left and right a foot just driving down a road. The thing was always broken. I hated it and would drive around in first then second gear for awhile before shifting into Drive. Unfortunately I could not kill it. I will say that both the heat and A/C could not be run on full blast no matter how cold or hot it was outside. It was hands down the best vehicle I’ve driven regarding that. Otherwise I’d drive it off a Cliff it was garbage.
Average Chrysler product ownership experience. Absolutely awful to drive, drains your bank account, but somehow survives out of sheer spite. It’s like Jaguar, but simultaneously more AND less reliable.
My GMA had one of these let me start by saying it was a big step up from the 2002 Nissan quest which she traded in for it , it was smooth and it had more room than my grandpa’s 2002 Ford explorer he had at the same time. It was more powerful and way more smoother. The Durango went 150,000 miles until she traded it in, it never gave her any problems, only thing she ever had to do with it was the thermostat and the battery. The explorer needed a transmission by 70,000 miles. The Durango was great! She loved it, we loved it. I drove it everywhere when I got my license
You get a cupholder! And you get a cupholder! And you get a cupholder!
“Everybody gets a cup holder!” - Oprah Winfrey
Honestly, the 2007-2009 Chrysler Aspen version actually looked better. Very rare SUV.
The 2007-2009 Durango also looks better. The mid cycle refresh was done great
I am a 40+ year old man who owns a raptor, corvette, Camaro, and two Harleys. I can’t fathom buying a “3 row suv” over a minivan. Minivans are orders of magnitude better and i have no issues driving them.
When I was in high school a couple of my friends had Blazers (their "trucks") and they'd always try to haul a few things in the back whenever something needed moving... Then I'd show up with my parents' Venture minivan and show them how to _really_ haul. I used that van to carry plywood, 8-foot tables, a few dozen bags of concrete mix, a four foot ditch witch (on a trailer), a few friends' furniture, an electric organ console, even a pile of dirt once or twice. A minivan is all the truck most of us ever need, while also being cheaper and easier to drive than an SUV.
That said, I understand the resistance to driving a van. My last few cars have been wagons because my kids are young and I'm still trying to feel a little bit cool. 😂
Lol 40+?
@@wigletron2846The new way of writing "70" lol
I grew up in one my mum bought it new in 2005 it currently has 300,000 miles and keeps going on and on it’s a limited
I swear that fail sound hit harder on them cupholders than on other cars. Also I really am glad I'm not the only one who thinks these are ugly. And that they are larger than the dakota rangos which I really like
Look inside that engine bay. The ENTIRE motor is hidden. Good luck doing maintenance or spark plugs.
Leave it to dodge to make a giant vehicle with a cramped engine bay
It's not hard at all to change them if you know how to work on cars. And I'm not a mechanic. It feels better to drive than a 2018 Escalade my brother-in-law owns. He drove it himself and told me that the Durango feels smoother and rides quieter. And it's not slow at all according to this video. It's my favorite Durango. It's roomier than the 3rd Gen. The only downside is the gas... but that's because of the transmission and weight. The newer ones have an 8 speed, this one has a 5 speed.
@@1.3m.7 the entire motor is hidden
Yeah I know how to work on engine, dosent mean I’m a fuckin snake who can fit in small holes
I don't hate these. The interior is Dodge at its worst, the rust-proofing is weak, and the mileage sucks but it's roomy and can be found for cheap. My state's DOT had a huge fleet of these in base model white with unpainted gray bumpers. It's been a long time since I've seen a first- or second-gen Durango on the road. I miss these 2000s cars. You should try to find an Aspen, especially an Aspen hybrid.
Also, this was built in my home town. The Great Recession claimed that plant and it's been completely redeveloped into university research buildings.
It may be ugly. But it was a true body on frame SUV that’s full size
Hah, my high school friend bought a new one, 2006, off the lot - 425k on it, he JUST burned something in the rear end and is having some problems finding parts.
My mom had an '04, the first year of this gen, in this exact color. Hers had the 4.7 V8. It was a really good truck. Maybe not the best looking but it has Ram and Dakota chassis components and powertrain so theyre sturdy vehicles. Hers had the rear DVD player and the nice Inginity stereo, 3rd row, leather, etc. Never had any major problems with it, she sold it with over 100k mi on it and everything worked and it still ran well.
Same exact same spec with the dvd player I remember the interior being grey tho
I have a 2006 Slt 5.7 hemi 4wd has 350k miles original engine. My mother bought a 2022 Durango and has nothing but issues. Stelantis ruined the Durango. Yeah mine isn’t as nice looking but man has it been a great vehicle. I haved it since 2008 and besides normal repairs like radiator water pump brakes etc I wouldn’t trade for the garbage coming out today. GM and ford I’m also looking at you
i used to have one of these, my overall impression was that what was underneath was really good, the 4x4 system the whole drivetrain was the peak (for a chrysler) of dodge but it was like they just dropped a cheap BIG body and interior on it
so again like all dodge trucks at the time
3 rows just like the minivan. Dodge still makes the Durango
Do they have 3 rows the new ones?
Not the new ones
@@mopargm9329yes the new ones have third row
@@42luke93yes
I used to hate these, but my parents had one of these and it had 320k on it with a working engine and transmission. They had to finally get rid of it a couple weeks ago. It had electrical issues that weren't worth fixing.
That ceiling infotainment center was common on the Jeep Grand Cherokee wj chassis! My mom had a similar one when I was a kid.
This was the worst generation of Mopar as far as interior plastics go. Everything has a hard edge, everything looks super cheap. I remember the Edmunds reviewers on the Inside Line blog (remember that?) commenting on their long-term test of the 2008 Caravan that one of the plastic edges actually cut them and drew blood when they reached for something. I wonder if you can buy replacement louvers for that air vent?
"How cheap can we make it, no one will notice."-Daimler Chrysler Executive
Let’s not forget how frumpy and ugly the truck can look.
0:40 This Durango looks absolutely beautiful.
Hell yeah I loved Chryslers old Candy apple red metallic, Chilli pepper red and inferno red pearl. I had a 96 Intrepid ES Candy apple red metallic and an 02 inferno red pearl Intrepid R/T. Also had an 02 silver 300M special. All were great cars and loved them. Will have another 300M special one day for sure
The Durango is not ugly
Dodge had the hottest trucks in both the midsize and full size markets this the mid 90s, yet made no effort to capitalize on the SUV market then, or now, 30 years later. It literally has been making my head explode for decades.
Dont forget 4.7
My parents had one of these for a rental once. Single digit mpg lol.
I’m not a SUV guy but i think these old durangos are cool
Had a 2022 R/T. Was driving my uncle to watch a game and it died on the interstate. Missed the national anthem and the first quarter. Got rid of it for a Lexus TX the day after.
I beg to differ. I like these for the truck like look and gear shifter.
Always reminded me of a warthog.
It's amazing that Dodge survived Mercedes' devastating destruction of the company.
They got the Charger, Challenger, Magnum and 300 out of the deal. Thats a win. Stellantis is doing them way worse than Mercedes ever did
I was going to say the charger and challenger were simply placed on an outdated Mercedes chassis pretty much unchanged from 2007 to 2024, not bad 🤷♂️
Credit where credit is due... Dodge somehow still got customers by selling the same vehicles as they did in the mid 2000s, but to me it's the equivalent of Christina Aguilera in 2024 still trying to push "Genie In A Bottle" as a single.
It's an SUV. Of course it survived.
DaimlerChrysler made good vehicles, even though everyone wants to hate on them
I bet the only people who bought a Dodge in the 2000s were already Dodge owners who stuck with the dealership because it was the path of least resistance and not because of cross-shopping and reading reviews.
This.
Was it really that bad though? I mean, it was a great alternative to a full sizer like an '05 Tahoe, Expedition, and Sequoia, which were larger.
@@hakeemsd70myes 2000s Chrysler/Dodge was awful. I mean it still is but they hit a low point back then.
My state's department of transportation had a huge fleet of Durangos.
237,000 for a big ugly dodge is impressive
I'm surprised it still looks new. I've seen these rusted so bad in Michigan
Tks For Review.
Im lookin at a 2005 .
Recommend Man Up a Bit, Spiders are terrifying?
Hurt Ur knee REAL Bad Com on Young Man .
Damn no chill with the title
if i could describe this era of dodge vehicles in a single word it'd be "chunky"
Great review and attention to detail this is why we love Jack Black!! 🙏🏽
I like the Durango. A nice alternative despite being garbage from what i hear. I've always wanted one with hemi.😊
They're durable, they're not garbage.
Hideous ugly should not have ever been redesigned
I didn't even watch the video, I just had tell you that you are DEAD WRONG to say this is the ugliest Durango. I used to own one of these, and I absolutely LOVE the way this looks. Now the current Durango may look like total crap, but this generation? This was retro power wagon chic.
I always said it looked like someone stuck a giant straw in a 1st gen and blew it up
8:26 - What are you talking about? 🤨 This garbage was available at the same time the GMT800 Tahoe/Yukon were on sale. Toyota's Sequoia was available. The Expedition was available. None of them were remotely as ugly as this. The Pathfinder Armada was this ugly, though.
I preferred the Infiniti qx56 my uncle had one and he was always looking cool when coming to family events
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same 5 speed automatic. The transmission went out at 90,000 miles. I doubt this has the original tranny with 237,000 miles on it.
You probably never serviced it either. Those RFE transmissions are solid and dodge fixed their issues by now
I drove one at work for about 3 years from 2008 on. I literally tried to blow up the trans because it was such a turd of a car. I was manually driving in first well into redline then second and eventually into drive. I’d be backing into a parking spot at 5 mph and throw it into drive or park or reverse. The engine and trans could not be killed. Everything besides the heat and A/c were absolute garbage

@@familyb5800 - I never touched her, I swear
Always thought these didnt look too bad...until you get to the front fenders forward.
I can't believe Dodge still makes the outgoing Durango. That SUV is like 15 years old now, and remains one of the oldest new cars on sale today 😂😂
One of these red but with the 2002 to 2005 ram front end i think would look nice
Were these base wheels with huge plastic wheel covers standard on the Limited?
So far I've only seen loaded 2nd gen Durangos with Chrome wheels or polished alloys
Looks like the dodge power wagon concept from the early 00s
I’ve got one with the 5.7 HEMI in it that my mom bought off the lot in 05 brand new and it’s definitely HORRIBLE on gas but HAULS ASS!😂
MISS my 03 Durango
That 5 speed transmission is reliable because it’s a Mercedes 5 speed
545rfe is all Chrysler bud.
Correct however some of these did actually have a Mercedes trans
You have to review the Mexican ramcharger
For something that is based on the Dakota, which isn’t a terrible looking truck, they really made sure to make this absolutely hideous
Guess for a cheap $2000 vehicle now could be good for a 4wd winter beater
My favorite Durango
Is this suv related to the Nisan armada?
No. Dodge and Nissan have never collaborated.
It was Mitsubishi and their rebadged suv was called the endeavor.
@@vicksanchez6376 I don’t think so the endeavor was smaller
@@vicksanchez6376 also thanks for that throwback haven’t seen one of those since my childhood
@@bwofficial1776 that’s not true look up the Nisan Titan, it got the 5.7 liter hemi from dodge
Legit my favorite gen.
Gosto muito das marcas americanas. Pena que aqui no Brasil temos poucas.
where's the rust?
All the comments saying this and that it has 237k, and its ugly, the unfortunate truth it will still probably be running when modern cars have less than half the mile and will be recycled into coke cans.
This person knows what they are talking about cars after about 2010 just haven’t been very reliable across the board. Even Toyota has some duds coming out recently.
@@ethenvallance-dx4uuI knew it was bad when I started seeing Toyota reliability drop
These SUVs are fairly recent but it goes to show how bad the quality is because most of them are almost gone. I haven’t seen one in years.
04:10 BIG FRIGGIN BOTTLE FAIL!!!
not
Bought a 2007 aspen hemi this year and was waiting for a serious review of this horrendous platform. Love the truck it’s a guzzler but gets you there clackety clacking ( dont review the aspen it’s literally identical except from badging and fenders)
I'm glad Dodge stuffed a Hellcat engine in the Durango......even though they're not gonna build it anymore. I think it was their apology for this rolling pile of ugly
they do
It's so ugly it's almost cartoonish
RAHHHH THE DONG DURG!!!
My mom got a 2004 Durango brand new with leather seats, 4X4, and the 5.7. I was in high school at the time and I thought that was the coolest vehicle I have ever seen. I see it now and I realize that it is ugly! Styles were way different 20 years ago.
Good Lord! A rust belt Durango?!
05 ram front end with a 06 chevy hhr rear end. 😅
Looks like it belongs in a rental fleet.
Even they didn’t buy these 🤣
My state's department of transportation bought these in bulk.
@@bwofficial1776 - my boss bought 3 of these in circa 2008 because they were cheaper than Tahoe’s and the economy was in the dump. One day he asked me how they were and I said absolute garbage and they’re not safe to drive. They would bounce left and right a foot just driving down a back road. Thankfully he listened and only purchased those 3. They did however have fantastic heat and A/C 💪
I kind of like it in red
It looks like a red barrel. Very giant cylinder styling.
Most have rusted away now
You don't see these in Wisconsin anymore. Rear ends are trash after 3 years. Ruuuusssst.
I wish 2005 Top Gear got there hands on one of these
Hybrid version last cars produced at Newark De. Assembly.
Sorry not sorry but i have always hated the looks of the second gen Durango third is far superior
hey that's a nice ride.
America was powerful in 2005
The Charger was all new for 06 not 05. The Magnum and 300 were 05 and Challenger was 08
17 feet per tank of gas!
These Durangos and Dakotas were SERIOUSLY fugly… the later facelifted version of this generation of the Dakota wasn’t nearly as ugly, but the corresponding version of this Durango never got a facelift like the Dakota did.
I'll agree with this being the ugliest Durango to date, although I'm also not really a fan of the current one now that they've completely phased out the crosshair grille that's always been on the Durangos. It just doesn't look right without it, particularly on the non-SRT trims that have no reason to mimic the look of the SRT Chargers. They just end up looking kind of plain and generic, but I digress.
The facelifted 3rd-gen Ram had a similar front fascia to the 2004-06 Durango, but the Ram had the right proportions whereas this looks squashed, almost pre-crashed, up front. Also, I think they were going for some sort of retro 40s-station-wagon-esque look for these, which was risky to say the least, but at least they ended up making them much more normal-looking for a body-on-frame SUV of the era for 2007, along with its Chrysler Aspen sibling, and I prefer both of those over this 2005 model in question.
This is a red flag if any woman still drives this lmao
Yall remember the Chrysler aspen it's was better than this even tho both based on same platform
Try to find a Shelby Durango SP360
I used to get my ass kicked by one of these in my 99 Honda prelude Type sh and my Civic SI.
What or who's more uglier tho? This one or the dodge nitro? 😂
Ive always liked the 1st gen Durango from 98 to 03. The 1st gen durangos looked cool to me along with its dakota twin brother. The 2nd gen durango in my opinion its absolutely hideous
jeep liberty alert
This is the American equivalent of a Jeep Liberty 🫃
I forgot how ugly these things were and this thing being a LIMITED and it's so... Hard plastic-y. Yuck.
I love your videos but please drop the big fricking bottle test. It's lame and something you will regret as age progresses. It's similar to the donut test by car confections.
I disagree because it's just a fun little silly part that Zack does in each review, and it's part of what makes this channel unique. If you don't like it just fast-forward a couple times.

This never makes it onto lists of ugliest cars, SOMEHOW
These looked so old even when they were new! Very ugly and funny thing is even a year or two old these were rotting out. Typical Chrysler lol
