    First thing I look for when buying a diesel: stickers. If someone has a big Cummins sticker on their truck, 99% of the time you can assume they probably have beaten the shit out of that truck. You don't see old dudes rockin' the Cummins stickers, it's usually the young kids who love to roll coal and beat on their trucks. Ill be looking on craigslist and if I see a truck that catches my eye and I click on it and see that it has a cummins sticker on the back window or pretty much anywhere, it's safe to assume that person probably romped on it and didn't take care of the motor too well and I skip it. Obviously unless it's a really good deal, should be very cautious about trucks with even just a basic Cummins sticker in my opinion

    • @mobster489
      @mobster489 7 лет назад +8

      Thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard. If someone has a Cummins sticker it probably means they like their truck. People who like their trucks take care of them.

    • @onlylikenerd

      9/10 its not that way hate to break it to you

      Please show me in the service manual where it says to check for stickers.

    • @onlylikenerd
      @onlylikenerd 7 лет назад +4

      Service manual? Bud do you know what that is? Service manual is for SERVICING a vehicle. It's not gonna tell u HOW to buy a damn truck...

    • @mobster489
      @mobster489 7 лет назад +4

      Plenty of clean trucks out there with no stickers that have been romped on. And plenty of trucks with Cummins stickers that have been babied. Point is you never know what your buying when you buy used, you have to assume a certain degree of risk. And saying looking for a sticker can eliminate that risk is pure ignorance.

    Just throwing it out there for you guys there is a non advertised recall on the steering for the 3rd gens. It takes your tie rod assembly to a solid assembly from left to right not the split tie rod on the mega cab. It keeps them from wanting to chevy under hard 4x4 acceleration

    I've painted several of my vehicles and my wife's car several times over the last 6 years. About once every 1.5 -2 years i change the color of my wife's car. If you take care of plasti dip and use things like dip coat protective spray then it wont stain nearly as much. Its like wax for normal paint. If you do about 6 coats or more then the rock chips wont effect it as much. They have a specific dissolver that you can use to repair cuts, rips and torn sections.

No rust truck ran great and three months in my tranny went out haha. $2500 later shes running like a champ got it rebuilt and had a shift kit and dual disc torque converter put in. now after i finish paying off my tranny ill start my work on it with Exhasut, Intake, etc.

    It depends from engine to engine on blowby tolerances. It matters much more on a cummins than a duramax and powerstroke engines, since they are much more dependent on compression. Less is better on all trucks, but v8 diesel engines seem to run longer when they develop high amounts of blowby. A cummins with bad blowby will usually have starting problems and seems to degrade faster.

    I bought my 03 from Texas. Forgot to check the seat electronics and the interior vent system, both had issues and not cheap to fix. You can also pull OBD codes by turning the ignition (without starting) on, off, on, off, on. This will display any codes on the dash - mine had a injector one short/open but I've had no noticeable issues with the truck...

    I like your input! I really like that you guys went under the truck to point to what to look for, this is really useful stuff for a new buyer like me. Thank you!
    I am contemplating transitioning to a diesel truck and before jumping into a 40K deal, I am leaning more towards a used cheaper truck. The only thing is that the video was too long (7 minute intro) before starting talking about the check points and real quick after that, went to cosmetic stuff. Not trolling, just my take! Thank you for all the good points.

    *New Cummins owner here too well not really new new, i bought mine in October. got the tow mirrors too, round here we call the tow mirrors "truck muscles" lol what kind of deletes could i get by with in an area that they emissions test still (middle TN area) OOOH i like those wheels on that mega cab, in process of upgrading my driving lights and just upgraded my headlights, tail lights, 3rd brake light and interior cab lighting and cab marker lights to LED. Now i have to add the resistors because i have the hyper flash problem happening. I also upgraded my headlight housing to the same lights that are on this one with the black background. but i'm thinking about swapping them again to the ones i have linked to below because they just look so bad ass.(link below) I see Jessie still has his grid heater, that was the first thing that was throwing a code on mine and everyone on the cummins forums told me to delete that saying i don't need it unless it's like -20 degrees or something. i bought a new one from Thorobred Diesel for $118.00 (dealer wanted $470.00 for the same thing) and KEYS are cheapest and programable from pretty much ANY lock smith. mine charged me $50.00 for two programmed keys that he provided, cut and programmed to my truck. My truck is an un-molested tennessee truck reposessed from a guy in East TN no tune ever, I don't know when or if my truck has ever had injectors done. mine has 174,000 on it and seems to run strong. the steering wheel isn't destroyed mine is kind of dirty but i just don't think it was ever cleaned well. I do love how the mega cab has enough room in it that you could put a full size mattress back there with the back seat laid flat though. that impressed me. also should the truck take a long time to idle back down when you get out of the throttle? that's something mine does and it just puzzels me. I'm new to diesel so all of this is a learning experience*

    Hey, I love your videos! Anyway, when buying a used diesel, what are the main things to look for? Thanks!

    I've never had a diesel, I've been looking for a 7.3 but my Neighbor has a 5.9 2004 dodge never had a tuner he put a leveling puck 4" exhaust k&n filter, and had a diesel place build a Tranny cost 5000 billet converter bigger pan on tranny and the rear diff rhino. Liner 123,000 he wants 23000 what do you think - he's an older man washes it every weekend never beats it. Has not towed anything with it no 5th wheel hitch just been driving it to work n back for the last 3 years?

      trialnterror I don't know a lot of diesel engines, but fot what you describe it sound like a tempting deal. If I were you I and had money to make a deal, I would check it out like these guys did. Make Internet research about these truck, about price range, and common faults.

    hey! love your stuff, i currently have a duramax, but am interested in switching to Cummins, could you give a run down on the different generations and common problems that you know of. Particularly, the 3rd gen is what i would be most interested. like my Lb7 is known for injector problems. I definitely think you have the best diesel page on RUclips!

    Best is light towing not heavy rv towing or hd towing .. I'd rather buy a truck with 100k road miles than 50k rv towing

    12v vs 24v. Spending its life hooked up to my 14k toy hauler. Which is better

    • @warden6808
      @warden6808 7 лет назад +2

      I personally love my 12 valve, it's 100% mechanical but any horsepower will be attained with a wrench. On a 24v you can just slap on a tuner and get more hp.
