I know nothing about Duramax...much less any diesel truck. I would like to find something within my "old man, retired, and poor" budget to pull my 5th wheel with. I currently have a 6.0 GMC that will do the job on the flats but when into any hills, she will grunt. (the Alison trans is a good option too) I definitely need to watch more of your videos to understand what LGBTQ, LLY, BMT, XYZ, and all the other Duramax acronyms mean.

Don’t buy a 20k truck in the North. If your spending that kind of money, buy a one way plane ticket to Texas and get a truck with no rust. IMHO It’s what I do.

With exception to Idaho/Montana/Washington and Oregon. Salt is rarely used up here iv purchased dozens of vehicles up here with little to no rust. But a good rule of thumb is to buy in the south vehicle tend to be cheaper in cali and Texas anyway.

Collapsed upper radiator hose most of the time is a coolant tank cap getting gummed up with crusty dexcool. Soak it in hot soapy water for a while and rinse with hot water then blow it off with some compressed air. Happend to me in my LLY and LB7 this fixed the problem. Definitely could be other problems also stated in the video but always start with the easy stuff first👍🏼

Additional considerations: #1 check the title and find out where it was prior to the respective lot you are browsing... many trucks get shipped around the country, flood vehicles are everywhere! #2 don't drive anything off a lot with promises, even if put in writing, ensure the issues are corrected prior to accepting any vehicle. #3 blistered paint usually means body rot, rust and blistered paint is a definite sign of serious body issues - it's often cheaper to replace the entire bed of a truck VS repairing a portion of the bed. #4 being many folks don't have personal diagnostic systems... take a test drive and stop by an auto-parts place that does free scanning, have them plug it in. And...don't purchase a used Duramax from Byers Chevrolet in Columbus Ohio. I invested $35,000.00 in a Chevy 2500 HD with 98000 miles and a clean interior... in less than a year, by their estimate, $9900.00 in needed body repair for what they cited as surface rust on the bed, rockers, and corners, in addition to numerous electrical issues, issues they claimed didn't exist at the time of purchase.

One more thought, the transfer cases on some trucks have a pump rub issue, this will shut you down in a hurry! If it leaks, or you get a strange oil splatter on your tailgate take preemptive action before the internals self destruct!

*UPDATE: i now own a 2006 Dodge Ram Mega cab 2wd SLT bought it for a tow rig still have my Escalade EXT everything is paid for and titles all in my safe. the Dodge had 172,000 miles on it when i purchased it in Oct, now has 174,000 and yeah if you fold the back seat down flat to the floor by using the release n the side of the seat at the floor you can put a full size maybe even a queen mattress in there. might come in handy in the event you can't find a hotel somewhere one night. the guy i bought mine from wanted $14,250.00 I test drove the truck came back and pulled a Richard Rollins on him. (MEANING) i walked in threw the keys back at him and asked him "so how much is this $5,000.00 truck going to cost me? Now we both know that the truck is worth at least twice that specially since there is no rust here on our trucks and this truck has never been out of the state it sold new to a guy in Knoxville through ORNL credit union and was reposessed in August last year 2018, I purchased it from a lot in Glasgow KY about an hours drive North East of me. I ended up paying $9,000.00 even for the truck. of course then all the LED goodies started getting ordered and installed and i may have a total of $9,500.00 total tied up in it now with replacing upper and lower ball joints and such. love the motor, can't stand what they wrapped around it with the exception of the mega cab bit*

I love my 06 LBZ and would be hard for me to part with it, she's only got 67k miles on her.

The weep hole is intended to allow extra lubricant from the pump bearings to drip out of the water pump housing. Without this hole, the oil would be forced past the water pump seal and get into the engine coolant.

I'm not sure if you go over it later in the video but look into the duramax injector cleaning procedure with gm upper end and injector cleaner, this is the system where you disconnect the fuel system and idle off a fuel jug with cleaner and half a gallon of diesel, I did this on my lbz and it improved idle as well as eliminated black smoke at idle and full throttle.

I bought an 05 GMC Sierra 3500, crewca long bed WT, 158k miles for 18k with the iffy aftermarket warranties. Truck was 14,999 beforehand. I checked as much as I could before I bought, excepted there to be a wee bit of work as it was used and came off a ranch. Ran great, drove great checked exhaust etc, as mentioned for color and all. After 4 months the injection pump completely took a crap. Luckily the iffy aftermarket warranty will cover it, but nothing else. So still looking at 5k out of pocket. It is my first personal Diesel, so not super stoked but staying positive.

There’s a lot to check for! But hey if you get one that was maintained well, it will last forever. Exterior-
Check the frame, especially where the spare tire goes. The bed rails and feel up behind the fender wells. If the trucks high enough try to poke your head up under there. The obvious cab/rockers. If it’s a white truck, check for paint flaking, GM did a horrible job. I believe there was a recall back in the day.

Side to side it's tie rod up and down its ball joint wheel bearing it's how loose the wheel spins around and by the way it's $120 for two brand new wheel bearings with the Hub and ABS sensor on eBay with 10 years warranty if you buying a used truck be ready for repairs and basically the way I see it it's how clean the truck looks that will tell you story how well the owner kept that particular vehicle

I watched a few videos on upgrades he appears very honest not feeding you a bunch of bullshit like some videos out there I had a problem with no fuel on startup well I watched a video that cured that problem with a rebuild kit on the primer head on top of your fuel filter I bought the kit basically o rings to replace and problem solved no more bleed back of fuel and that your truck has to spin over way more then it should to build up fuel pressure and start another thing is a simple way to check what glow plugs are bad without removing the plugs first and testing continuity with a multitester etc also test with 12 volt battery to see how long it takes to get red hot careful not to go over board with this test or you will burn out the heating element and you'll need to purchase a new one.

Not sure if a tool exists to check blow by on the fly like something that fits in your pocket, but a (welding gas flow tester) could be adapted easily and in you pocket kinda tool.

Great video it helped a lot when I was looking for one I purchased a 2006 GMC Sierra SLT 2500 HD duramax 6.6 turbo LLY engine no blow-by it has 325.000km. It needs rocker panels on each side I’m getting quotes from $2000.00 to $9,500.00. HopefullyI can find a better price this summer or someone that does the rocker panels on the side.

A collapsed upper rad hose can also be due to a radiator cap

Use a good LED flashlight on the exhaust facing the exhaust itself during the daytime it's still kind of hard to tell but at night you can clearly see the white smoke coming out of it equals bad injector

  • @chriskriewall8941

if that upper hose is compressed most of the time the fill cap to the rad tank needs scrub out with mild soapy water, and maybe a light soak before scrubbing .. thanks

I bought mine $600 with bad injectors.
But if your 4x4 check that front diff people often run those out of gear oil.

when jacked up you can also use a bigger pry bar under the tire and try to lift up and down on the bar and it should not wiggle or knock if everything is good :)

Wonder what my 2005 Dually LLY LT would fetch with 35,000 miles. Bought it new in 05, started working in Iraq in 2007, now in A’stan. Hate letting a diesel sit like this but don’t want to deal with all of the new emissions stuff. Get to drive her again next month. Stoked. Always covered in the shop, can still get a whiff of new leather.

Chevy and GMC trucks don't powder coat their frames. They only put a was substance on them. They need to step it up like Ford and Ram by powder coating them. In 2020 they've stepped up big time by making the cab bigger and bed bigger

Thanks for all the info. On a side note, stop buying all our Canadian trucks. I’ve been looking for a lbz truck in Canada for four years now. Anything that is available is typically a high mileage rust bucket. I’ve finally found a rust free lower mileage truck, which i’m looking at tomorrow.

Dan Makin On my gas trucks in the past I would always change my oil every 3/4K miles. I let the Duramax go 5/6k miles (deleted) so it's about the same cost really. Everything else is the same on the air frame. It's not that much more to own a Diesel. Cheaper if you tow a lot. My uncle just converted and bought a Cummins to tow his 5th wheel, never seen a 70yr old man so damn happy, made me happy to listen to him tell me all about it hahaha

@ 8min 30 sec when he mentions the tire baldness issue. I have noticed on my 07 colorado z71 suspension that the previous owner had played with those torsion bars that come on z71 trucks and he essentially had the tires running on the inside toe of the tire so no matter how many alignments I got done, none of them thought to even look at the torsion bars because not all trucks have them.
By my 3rd set of tires, I finally saw a video of some guy adding a 2 inch lift to his z71 by playing with those torsion bars and he mentioned the tires will run bald on the inside edge.. Just thought I would mention that in case people didn't know why their z71 truck might be doing that to tires after alignments etc if its a used truck someone might have played with the torsion bars.
