  • In this episode I will attempt to start up the Uniflow scavenge Diesel engine. Made by Nissan Diesel these 2 stroke supercharged engines are a rare item these days and I will give a brief history on them also. Come along as we attempt to start it and encounter starter problems. We overcame this to hear it roar into life. #mechanical #oldtruck #diesel #dieselengine #willitstart #willitrun #supercharged #2stroke #nissandiesel #nissan #udtrucks #udtruck #international #madeinjapan #japanese

I'm in western Canada and I never knew Nissan made 2-stroke diesels until now. It sounds a bit like a cross between a 71 Detroit and a roots-blown EMD 567 or 645, the hum of the blower is very prominent on this. I love it!

Convert a UD6 to v-force carbon fiber reed valves for each crankchamber sealed and stuffed with billet aluminum. A billet aluminum 7068 alloy head with coates ball exh valves with dry sump and 2 VRO pumps. Run ethanol E85 with MSD magneto and castor 927 maxima 2T. 450 CID of 2 stroke fun!

Hi Steve ,, I came across the UD range of motors way back in the mid 70's .
From memory the UD3and UD4 came into Aussie as second Hand motors , my old boss used them to repower his irrigation pump and later he put a UD4 in his cans harvester ... The UD3 replaced the 6-354 Perkins on the irrigation pump sorta the same horse power , there about 115 , with no muffler , Christ you could hear it 2 miles away at night , screaming like a banshee ..
The UD4 replaced the 6-354 in the cane harvester , there about 125 hp which wasn't much better than the old Perkins Some how some where he found a 4 valve head to replace the 2 valve head which increased it 145 hp ,,,, The 70's was a great decade to live in 🙂,,

I still have a brochure for the UD 3cyl. from the mid 1970s. My father was toying with the idea of buying one for an irrigation outfit, but that didn't eventuate. Apparently, they were a cheap 'crate engine" at the time. These were new engines sold through Annand and Thompson dealerships.

@@stevesplacedownunder The mixing oil in a 2 stroke gas engine lubricates the crankcase, which also serves as the blower, but a diesel intake charge has no fuel, and any oil would preignite. So how do the pre-blown UD engines lubricate the crankcase?

I've been looking forward to this one. It was everything I hoped for and more!! Brings back some awesome memories of sitting in the copilots seat with my dad driving from Sydney to the Vic boarder to pick up an old Inter TD14, then up to the farm just North of Cooktown via Goondiwindy. Ours was a UD4 and the cab was swapped out for a later model (C1930 rings a bell for some reason???). With the 're-cab mod', the engine cover never really sealed properly, so the noise and heat from the engine bay lived with us in the cab!! Fun times! Ha ha!! Super interesting to hear the history of these things. Until this video, I was only aware of the 4 or 6 cylinder options. Sadly, our truck (along with a heap of other vehicles / equipment) was stolen. The rusted out empty shell was found years later beside a river about 100klms away. The engine found nearby with a heap of bullet holes in the injector pump governor housing. I managed to get the engine running again, but never properly. Thanks again for the awesome video, Steve!!! Hope you had an amazing fathers day!!! 🙂

Junkers made a two stroke supercharged opposed piston diesel aircraft in WWII. The Junkers Jumo 205. These engines all used a two-stroke cycle with 12 pistons sharing six cylinders, piston crown to piston crown in an opposed configuration. This unusual configuration required two crankshafts, one at the bottom of the cylinder block and the other at the top, geared together. The pistons moved towards each other during the operating cycle. It was used for high altitude reconnaissance aircraft.

The generator was ex Aussie red cross blood banks which have several levels of backup :), $1550 at auction, the only kunty part was the single axle tilt tray sent to back load it couldnt drag it up, too heavy, had me fucked why coz I was sure my weight calcs were accurate ???, didn't figure on the 1500 litres of fresh diesel onboard :), was a bonus problem :), life is good :):),

The engine was fitted with a Commer Knocker 5 speed gearbox, on one trip a large bolt within the box tried to get out, putting a hole in the centre of the Overdrive housing. We had spare parts so we had a five hour drive down the New England Highway, it was well into the night by the time I had the replacement cover fitted and early morning by the time we got back home.

Very nice to hear a UD 5 two stroke Diesel . I have not heard of one these engines must be close to 25 years re powered in a cab over sleeper deutz tipper . My father had a UD5 in his cab over international acco 1950 A with a six speed crash UD box and he was doing interstate with it . This engine is just a copy of the 71- series GM . Bore and stroke. 110x130 UD5 horse power 225 hp UD6 is 240 hp UD4 is 180 hp . These engines also made it to America but are super rare . They were known as a Chrysler NISSAN Diesel 2 stroke very very rare in America I have only seen a UD3 150 hp and A UD6 Genset derated to 220 hp .
