  • No song better exemplifies the Pixies' wacky pop instincts that set them apart from the other depressing Reagan-era bands than "Where Is My Mind?" released in 198 by The Pixies.
The lead guitar by Joey Santiago is more memorable than most Top 40 songs, and by the time Fight Club made this song famous ten years after it was first released, it had already been a staple of innumerable alternative-radio friendly singles by bands like Nirvana and Korn.
Black Francis gave a characteristically enigmatic response to the question of how he manages to produce amazing tunes when asked in an interview in 1988: "It's nice to have space. How much can one brain deal with”?
The sixth track on the American alternative rock group Pixies' 1988 debut album Surfer Rosa is the song "Where Is My Mind?" It is one of the band's defining tunes and has spawned a tonne of cover versions.
Frontman Black Francis wrote the song while he was a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, drawing inspiration from his experiences scuba diving in the Caribbean. Later, he claimed that "this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why-I don't know too much about fish behaviour."
The guitar line for the song was written by guitarist Joey Santiago. He remembered, "This was actually the first thing I tried. A lazy potato that instantly sounded strong and hooky."
The song got even more popularity after it was used in the 1999 movie Fight Club (where it plays over the closing scene).
