I LOVE that they changed the song from the recorded version (they play it like this live for years now). On the album the lyrics start right in. This extended intro really adds to the mood of the song.

I rang up Frank Black at work yesterday. I was completely starstruck. He came to the register and I couldn't stop looking up and staring at him and he finally asked me "Is everything OK?" And I ask "Is your name Frank?" And he replies "Yes" and I started to fanboy. He was very kind and humble. Such a surreal moment for me that I won't soon forget.
His name is actually Charles aka black Francis aka Frank Black

I work at an Olympia Sports sporting goods store. I actually watched him walk in from where I was at the register and thought to myself "Gee, that guy looks a lot like Frank Black" but I convinced myself it couldn't be him. Well he eventually came to the register with some clothes and was standing in front of me and my heart starts racing because i'm almost positive it's him but i'm trying to do my job as well and trying to take the security tags off his clothes but i'm shaking and dropping stuff because it's Frank Black for Christ's sake and I keep looking up and staring and that's when he asked "Is everything alright?" Lol and then I asked "Is your name Frank?" and so on. After telling him I was a big fan and had Surfer Rosa in my car he goes "well today i'm just a fat guy buying yoga clothes!" Lmao not even kidding. I was on cloud nine for like five hours afterwards because of how surreal the whole thing was.

I don't mean this in a disrespectful way - but I'm a novice drummer that plays a lot of Pixies songs for fun. They aren't very technically demanding as far as drums go.

I have been watching this band perform this song for 30 years now and the last couple of years it has become an almost religious experience. It has transcended everything it has ever been before and ascended to a plane of pure sonic joy for me that nothing else has even come close to. I'd say that in its current incarnation, the live version has achieved perfection, but that doesn't do it justice. It's perfect, but it's perfect even for a Pixies song. There is simply nothing to compare to the experience of standing in the middle of a dance floor in a crowded auditorium, eyes closed, gently swaying to the calm-before-the-storm bass groove, knowing that with each controlled-chaos verse, hell is going to break a little more loose. By the time we get to "break the walls and kill us all", I am screaming the words back at Charles Thompson with the understanding that though he wrote them, I am feeling them, because that is his will. This song, and the way it is played today, stands as one of the greatest rock and roll achievements of my lifetime.

@@andychilcott7245 haha thanks! Reading it today, I was almost certainly pretty stoned when I wrote it, so I'm sure that's part of how I was feeling at the time, but I stand by these words today. Every time I see a Pixies show, either live or on RUclips, this song is often the highlight.

I went to their concert, then had to take a big dump
In the 90's, I was lucky to see Frank Black in concert in Paris. I'm 55 and still love Pixies.
I’m 45 and my 14yr old must have discovered them on his own online somewhere because he was studying with his headphones on humming “number 13’ I asked what he was listening to and he said “this band I found. The Pixies, You would like them, kinda a violent femmes meets Jane’s Addiction .” I honestly was overwhelmed with emotions out of nowhere. It was like looking at myself at that age, lost, angst filled, trying to connect to something, anything that made me feel seen, heard, understood, anything just to not feel so all alone. I remembered my mom telling me my music was trash and throwing out my tapes. I saw the Hope in his eyes and the excitement of introducing me to one of my favorite bands back when I was his age.
So I didn’t ruin it for him. I let him play the entire Doolittle album and afterwards told him it was the coolest album ever and thanks for sharing it with me.
It was a beautifully touching moment and I have the pixies to thank for it! ❤

@Darren Harper Is this sarcasm or just trolling?...his guitar playing and sound is very unique it's such a big factor in the pixies sound...personally the thing i respect the most about his playing is his ability to hold back and not over do things that allows the bass and vocals to cut through and gives the songs a special dynamic, sometimes less is really more.

Listening to this in an office with headphones on and I still take a deep breath just before "Missy aggravation" like I'm going to scream along. Very very few bands make me feel the way the Pixies do. I want to yell at people who don't know them and love them that they are missing out on something incredible. This is an awesome version too.

This is one of the best versions of one of the best Pixies songs. Come here to revisit often and always hit repeat at least once. Always thought 'without Kim, it ain't the Pixies', but this track convinced me that Paz Lenchantin is a fitting successor to the great Kim Deal.
Ditto. I feel exactly the same. I refused to listen to the band without Kim, I wasn't really interested. It was this performance of a great song that convinced me they were still a magical thing. Paz is so good in this.

Over the years this band has risen in my esteem from one of the best American bands of their era, to one of the greatest bands of all time.
I think a strong appreciation of their '90s material is essential in coming to that conclusion, which is something that sadly far too many Pixies fans lack. Those are the albums that raise the Pixies from a band that can hang with (and often better) the best Rock n Roll and Punk bands to a band that can hang with the best "serious" pop and art bands (Beatles, Kinks, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, as well as stuff they inspired themselves like Radiohead and Arcade Fire). To be a band that can rock so hard AND play such beautiful things is basically unprecedented, and the result is an extremely important catalog of amazing sonic depth.

God, I've loved this band since my teens (I'm 47 now)! The music is timeless, simple and perfect...rarely will a day go by where I'm not listening or playing their stuff.

What a great drumer Loveling is... He has that kind of "Ringo" thing that you can't explain but is amazing. He plays the perfect beat at the perfect moment.
gouge away is one of those songs, when you heard it on the radio while driving, you knew even if you arrived early at your destination- you were going to sit in the car until the last note of this song was played. great performance here too.

I introduced the Pixies to my brother in the 90s. The face he made when I first played Doolittle was cringe. Now he is an expert on any trivia regarding this amazing band.

This song takes me back to high school. Pixies was one of those bands you only listened to if you were in a certain group. Everyone else just kind of listened to the pop chart music and the auto tuned rap. Of course my friends and I being skaters we loved Pixies and sonic youth. All of us smokers at the time hanging out in the smoking section. Glad we all mostly quit now though. Especially as one of my friends is a singer/music producer now. He's just released a cover of "All Along the watchtower" and I swear it sounds to me as if Pixies covered it themselves. It's a strange but cool take on it. Try searching Lonely Gimmick - All Along the Watchtower, I think he's seriously talented and deserves more attention. He does all the music himself recording to his laptop.
Surfer Rosa - Doolittle - Bossanova is a three album run that most bands can only dream of. This performance is simply perfection. And Joey Santiago is one of the most underappreciated guitarists ever.

I was a little bit in love with Kim & It was difficult at the beggining, but this new bass player show to all Pixies followers around the world ( we're millions, Im from Spain ) that she's an excellent woman & a brilliiant bassist too,, she has all muy support, as the rest of the best rock punk band of the history.
she's good bass player, less good vocals... but I think the big difference is that Kim was extremely creative, all the bass line are from her and that was the problem in a band where there is no room for other creativity than Charles.
I really miss Kim.

I have a pixies tattoo my left shoulder blade. Got it in 89. Re colored in 2005 or so.. to this day not sure if I got the tat because of Kim or Frank. Seriously some of the best music growing up. Todays music couldn’t touch this with a trillion dollars.

I think PAZ is so subtlety SHEIK I am just staring at her passion for her craft. I loved her in Perfect Circle n Zwann...There is a certain raw to her here. Plus I love her violin skills as well.
