Personally, I think the hats (along with the beards) are the best part of Chaos Dwarfs. Hopefully, they'll return to the tabletop when the Old World comes out. Along with Bretonnians and Tomb Kings.
The goblin green takes me back. I remember I took a pot down to my local B&Q and got a tin of mat emulsion mixed to match it. I then used this to paint up a 4 x4 sheet of chipboard which would then be placed on top of my folks kitchen table. Those were the days. 😊
I think I have the patience if I had access to green stuff and sculpting tools, I’d be kitbashing Leagues of Votann into Leagues of Hashut as I think that’d be cool
I'm glad I started collecting these boys back in 2005 when the models were still relatively easy, and cheaper to get. I have 30 blunderbusses sitting half done in a box somewhere
I love these retro paint jobs Duncan, takes me back to when I first got into the hobby in the mid 90s. Would love to see more, perhaps a bigger model (Egrimm Van Horstmann on Baudros!!) Anyway, great vid as always, even had my 4yo daughter dancing to the intro rock music!
I see Chorfs and I immediately click. I was about to buy the range, had it all in my FW cart after a decade of looking at them, and the next day they were gone. As much as I revere big hats, I do love the modern look like the fire glaives. Total warhammer has really threaded the needle on their looks. Though beards should always be curly.
i know i am late to the party, but this was so awesome. i feel greedy but i want to see duncan paint more chaos dwarves, it would be so fun. thanks for doing this and showing how awesome these old models are.
You remind me of the incredible surprise I had, not that many years ago. I went to a geek convention. Small scale, if not very small scale (in France), but delightful atmosphere. Someone played chaos dwarf. So, this was first super unusual, but the paintjob was excellent. I rarely saw an entire army painted with this quality. All totally GW style, with the color scheme and so, but man, on the table, it was impossible not to find it super particular. Anyway, great video!
Thanks for the video as always Duncan. Just felt since I've been watching your videos for a few months now that I would make a comment. Always excited to see a new upload, have started a few projects because of your tutorials, very much reignited my interest in the hobby. I've been dealing with quite a bit of mental health issues in the recent year or so but these sort of distractions and creative hobbies help me a lot and you have helped me a lot in those hobbies so I don't think it's too crazy to say thank you very much for what you do and I always look forward to seeing your impressive work!
They've mentioned them in the lore for AoS, the hobgrots trade prisoners for arms and then in warcry we have the Horns of Hashut. Maybe they'll be one of the mysyery reveals this year.
Looks bob on that duck, I've got an old school chaos dwarf blood bowl team, with a couple of bull centaurs to paint up, honestly love the little feckers.
Eh, I know its dated, but I've really adopted the older high contrast/garish style in general. Just seems right on the tabletop. Love seeing the old big hats! Great Video.
The only army I wanted more than a big hats army back in the days was a albino night goblin army. Never had the funds for either. Thanks for the throwback - both giant hats and 80's morning cartoons ^^
Im gonna do a heretical thing and do classical 90s bright Goblin Green bases for my modern spacemarines and Guards. I like the vibrant color it gives, and maybe it can give a nice contrast between the more darker modern themes of the figures and the baseplates.
The first minis I ever bought with my own money (paper round) was the chaos dwarf renegades box - inspired by seeing Duran The Faceless in a pack of Combat Cards. Good times 🎉
Hello duncan, can you do " how to paint video" on empire knightly order and free company militia? My empire minis just arrived but it seems i cant find any tutorial on painting warhammer fantasy era minis. Thanks in advance and as usual what a wonderful paint jobs !
Chaos Dwarfs by far are my favourite army. I do prefer the 'older' 3rd edition miniatures though. However, these 4th ed are great too. I would like to see you paint some Marauder Miniatures; the Chaos Dwarfs, Chaos or Dwarfs were for me the best miniatures ever. I've painted 100s of these fellas and I thought you were extremely brave/crazy to do the arrow details before the darker colour on the hat and blunderbuss. I would always do the hats/blunderbuss then re-undercoat the arrows..............used to take me an absolute age! So for the circle on top of the blunderbuss, have you thought about using some of the super black black (like black 3.0) to show something like that? I think it would work well here, and I think videos that use artist paints do well on youtube too!
any time i see this style of video i want to see anachronistic paint jobs where brand new minis are painted in a retro style or old minis painted in a very contemporary style
2:35 I'm very disappointed you didn't purchased a *LV-1160 Mitsubishi CNC Vertical Machining* for this video. Things are really going to pot around here.
Use a spray primer on the mini first, like citadel's white scar or whatever color you want the model to be at the start. Just apply a light coat from each direction and allow to dry completely between layers, then lay the model down and another light coat from underneath on both sides and let that dry. Don't clog the details, just a light misting is all that is required. Then you can use whatever paint you want because the primer adheres to the metal and your paint will adhere to the primer. To get into the cracks you touch your brush in some water first and dab on some paper towels and then touch the brush into your paint so that the paint is slightly moist. That way the paint will be thinner and go on a lot smoother. It will dry slower, but better. A couple of coats will do just fine.
I honestly cried when the metal adeptus astarties were no longer on the market. I honestly think warhammer should make a giant ork dreadnought like a crab but we can call it the gigga chompa
I've never liked highlighting black, I always prefer to paint grey and wash black wherever possible. Would that be possible on a mini like this, or was highlighting from black a conscious choice due to it being an older mini with less detail?
You can do it that way no problem, but the style of the era was to paint the darker colours first and work towards the highlight because the paint of the era was thick and sticky and so it didn't always flow into recesses very well unless you knew what you were doing and could thin the paint correctly.
Always curious. Was the old hammer style purely for taste or was there anything else behind it? I. E. It suited paints/photography technology at the time or anything like that?
Love the video! Could you please do a tutourial on how to paint nighthaunt emerald host dreadblade harrows? I know there is probably a lot on your list though so no rush!
Old school done right. Citadel needs to bring back the original line of colours from the 1980s in their ORIGINAL formulas with the ORIGINAL pigments including glowing titillating pink and strong worm purple and the duller hobgoblin orange and the more dull olive goblin green and the perfectly bestial brown and the perfectly neutral and opaque enchanted blue, electric blue, and the semi-transparent moody blue, etc. The old palette was best. Coat D'arms is the closest match and the Warcolours Classic '88 line is close with many of the colours. Vallejo makes a good goblin green also, but the original was more olive. Perfectly serviceable though. But no company matches the old paints exactly right for every colour since some of the pigments are different and the modern mediums aren't as vinyl as the old medium.
You usually do need to two coats at least to base coat properly, but it depends on the paint you are using and how thin you water it down. It's best to have a little water on your brush so that you can get into the cracks and corners, but that makes the paint thinner requiring more coats, but that's still the correct technique so you don't clog the details. If you have too much water it'll look a bit spotchy or streaky so you'll have to do a few more coats. With most colours if you have just the right amount of water after two coats it should be fine, but three is sometimes needed no matter what just because that particular colour is semi-transparent. Some paints are naturally more transparent than others and some colors cover others more easily. For example yellow green is usually pretty transparent requiring more coats and it won't cover black very well at all, but if the paint has a touch of white, black, or gray mixed into it it'll cover better. Most medium browns are a bit transparent and usually look a little streaky at first. Citadel labels colors that are more opaque as "base" colours because they cover better than "layer" paints which are more transparent. I think vallejo calls their more opaque paints "heavy" paints. So if you start with "base" colours or "heavy" colours that'll help too.
Best models ever. Khemri and Chaos Dwarfs were really 2 themed armies and both were great. Ancient East CD vibe is amazing but was list in second wave of CD models. What a shame...

A superior painting style, for a more civilized age of gaming.
I really do wish Games Workshop would release Chaos Dwarfs as an army I could collect because they're so cool....even with their silly hats.
Yes, maybe with the new upcoming release of 'oldhammer'...
There is a 3d printed version if you look for them that are frankly utterly brilliant
Those hats was their selling point. Assyrian Vibe.

what a handsome boy! these older models have so much character to them, even more then a lot of the newer cooler miniatures.
It's neat seeing how GW's style changed to be more "realistic" there's a distinct like in between period too
Goblin green makes me happy.

Who doesn't enjoy watching Duncan's content?! I find it very relaxing to catch up on his videos whilst painting my minis!
Warhammer miniatures from this era were so cartoony looking, especially Dark Elves and Chaos Dwarfs.
Greta job as always, Duncan!
It makes a lot of sense to exaggerate the features of something so tiny. Plus, they were easier to paint :D
That's called charm.
I'm glad I started collecting these boys back in 2005 when the models were still relatively easy, and cheaper to get. I have 30 blunderbusses sitting half done in a box somewhere
Nice one Duncan reto Chaos Dwaf and some great old school scheme .
Thanks! They really do have a certain charm

A real shame forgeworld never made the K'daai destroyer.
Sure is 😢
There are a couple of the prototypes out there. They showed it off at a FW event once and they go for a lot of money when someone wants to sell them
It's going to be so cool if people can 3d print it from the game files tbh
@@DuncanRhodesDRPAI’m sure you could rip the in-game model and turn that into an STL

The original range is way cooler than the FW models (I have both)

Any tips for getting that nice even undercoat on a metal mini? I've always struggled to do so especially on scale mail
