ENGINE TROUBLE 127 miles offshore! (Grouper Catch/Clean/Cook)

- In this episode we head almost 130 miles offshore to Pulley Ridge in the Gulf of Mexico. I’m fishing with my friend Garrett aboard his boat but he got dirty fuel the night before. He thought he cleaned the fuel system the night before, but we run into a lot of trouble while fishing! We catch some really nice snowy grouper so the trip was worth it, but it had us all a little nervous! The VST wound up being the culprit that was clogged up with the debris from the bad fuel.

When you buy a boat, everything on it is broke, just takes a little while to discover it.
truest statment I've ever heard 😂😂
Shhhhh! The boats will hear you! Mine don’t know they’re supposed to be broken yet 😂
Partly because they sit all the time till u use it, another cuz the sun does a number on them don’t buy a boat unless u plan on using it
That’s where I’m at currently
I’ve had a boat for 2 months now but haven’t gotten to go out once :)
I always have said the three worse things for a boat, Sun, Salt, and lack of use!! have a great day.@@Mikesalas1989
It was the banana you ate. 💯
Never bring bananas on the boat
Or Cornish Pasties, or see a rabbit on the way to the boat, or…
That was definitely one of your better videos! Nice catch of snowies. And that bad fuel issue..... it's the reason I installed top of the line Racor fuel filter/water separators on my boat. We got some bad fuel one time in the Bahamas and had to keep stopping to drain off the water in the Racors, but nothing got past them and we had no engine issues, thank God. I knew that day those Racors paid for themselves. Anyway, nice catch, and at the end of the day that will be the trip you remember and talk about later. Cheers
You jinx the boat with that banana lol
That was a brutal trip. Last time I was down we had the air pump fail 20 miles out. Long slow ride back to shore, 5 hrs, but we trolled all the way back in and got a half dozen keeper Dolphin so it wasn't a total loss. Sometimes you gotta make lemonade.
Good opportunity to sell them one of those $1.5M Freeman’s you listed 😂
I was waiting for that mini rod to snap, but wow I’m impressed!
Twin engines and separate tanks for the win. It'll be a long while before I can afford anything that could reasonably run twins but having two motors on separate systems is a smart move. Glad you guys made it back in a reasonable time frame and caught some really nice fish.
I run twin old 48 Enduros on my 24 Ft Panga. No inboard tanks. You def can afford twins on whatever you are driving. New boat with twin Merc 600, next lifetime, Caught 4 Kingfish and a big jack two weeks ago, A 30 lb'r. Whatever you got(reliable), and Kicker for insurance will bring fish for the table. Many years ago would go way out there with a 12 Ft Starcraft and a 8HP Mariner. never let me down, even on pretty high seas. For insurace had a pair of Oars🤣My only insurance was one of the big cell phones of the late 1970's. If stranded could call my local fishermen friends fo help. Never had to
Glad yall made it back home safe ❤
Great video Stanzfam! Awesome catch on the mini Nick!
Thanks for sharing!!!
Glad you made it back safe, Nick! That was pretty scary!
16:36, at least it's a calm day out there. Imagine working on that motor is a rolling sea.
Excellent videos. I really enjoy the complete honesty and candidness so much great information here. Stay safe
Really neat shot of running past Ft. Jefferson!
Hi Captain Nick , you caught those fish with the mini rod because all your years as a fisherman and your experience played the part in landing those two . Way to go Captain Nick . I dare you to do it again with the mini rod except this time make it a 40 or 50 pounder 💯😎💪😱👍 You the Man Nick .👍
I am glad for you guys that the boat issues were not more serious than they were. Love the channel!
Great idea showing the world the almost catastrophic day offshore. The sat phone a must! Extra water on board like a gallon per person per day. And plenty of grouper sushi. Lol
Nick that was a good fishing trip to bad you all had engine trouble but you all got fish and some big ones at that just glad you all made it back safe 👍
Nick videos like this are awesome
Glad y’all got back safe and still found a few fish. Have been to pulley 4 times and it’s always prayers on the way in and out.
2 years watching you and this is the first time i'm first! 😂
Amazing!!! the mini rod action was great
Nick , glad you filmed the whole trip, made it interesting, to wait and see the outcome, glad you guys got home safe
.THOSE WERE SOME JUMBO GROUPER YOU CAUGHT ON THE NICK/STAN STICK ,Great Video as always!!! T hanks!!!
Nick, all I can say is that you are one lucky dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are living life the right way.
Love the channel! I always feel I'm right there with y'all... Great videos
I appreciate that
I'm in southern California and here the wings are called collars. They are really good on different fish one is a yellowtail. It's part of the jack family and over 20 pounds done on the barbeque are good. As a suggestion for getting the cheeks off the head sharpen a large spoon to scoop the meat out it gets more of it off the head. I make a soup with the head that is really good. Enjoyed watching you catch the double header on the mini rod it would have been nice to have been 1 giant one, but 2 big ones are good. We get the snowy grouper off the Baja Peninsula up to +40 pounds in water up to about 450 feet deep.
As the Freeman and Yamaha logos are playing in the corner...classic. Great vid Capt. Nick...looks like good eating
Yay!! Y'all got back real good. 😊
It was the banana!
Nick, I spent 20 years at sea as an Engineer Officer on a cruise liner, one of my responsibilities was looking after 22 lifeboats and launches, from 2 cylinder to twin 12 cylinder. I know from that experience, that you have the right attitude to be a boat captain.
Great job man!
Very sincerely,Rod
I wish I knew more about the mechanics! Thanks for watching
If it wasn’t mass maritime, then it was nothing. Mr. Cruise Ship Engineer Officer 😂
That's not fishing using fancy reel's that pull your fish up from bottom then you got a guy who deals with gaffing unhooking l, remember as teenager sitting on the end of the breakwater line tight and half rapped around my index 👉 you can tell alot from the way a fish strikes, can your reel tell you what's on the hook, probably not yet but give it time, fishing will be watching rods fish, sad for the youth
Wow your a beast nick!!! That was cool on the mini rod!
Glad you all had a safe trip there and back. That little mini rod is the truth awesome! That cooler was packed full of yummy grouper. That's why we run Yamaha!!!
You got that right!
Hi Nick, when you guys get back to your area and the Coast Guard stops you, how can you prove you caught those fish in legal waters? Must be a lot of drag on the line when you catch 3 at a time?
Congrats, on the great catch! If you come to Hawaii, "wings" are called "collars'" here. That and the belly are the fatty parts, so tasty & juicy. Even grilled. Now you'll sound like a pro in the islands. Tight lines
Captain Nick on the mini rod! "Tightness is upon us! No one's laughing now."
thats a real life trip, grouper on da mini kudoz..goodness in dat head..staysafe an that was another good vid nic..
Man! That’s a trip!
the banana never fails
I had a similar fuel issue on my Suzuki. It ended up being a hard to see secondary filter on the engine. Its called a high pressure fuel filter and its connected to the fuel injection rail..
I think that was it!
Is it field maintainable? In a pinch could you delete the filter in a pinch?
@@ben3989It would be difficult, but maybe.. You have to take the side cowling off to be able to get to it.. My boat does not have good access to the engine while in the water.. It would be impossible for me..
You might be a fisherman, but you’re probably not a go 130 miles out on a questionable engine and catch a double on the mini rod kinda fisherman. You’re a fishing beast Nick!
Love the captain Ron reference,
At least y’all caught some beautiful fish 👌
You did a great job 👏🏿 using that mini rod
No wonder you had engine problems. you broke the Banana Rule. Rookie mistake.
Nick, with two big fish on the mini-rod...you're the man...hahahaha
It's a darn good thing you went out with two engines. A call to a friend or the coast guard for a tow would have been embarrassing....lol.
DOUBLE HEADER ON A MINI ROD!!! SHEESH
🙌🏻
Yamaha logo on the bottom right adds some humor to it
Killer "all-around" video. Of course, I subbed. Also, the head makes some of the finest soup!
Excellent, thanks for cooking the grouper. On the Westcoast the throat is called the collar.
Would love to do this same trip but all jigging 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Jigging would be fun!
You need to mount those fish with the mini rod!!!! That was awesome! Love the channel keep it up and we will keep watching
Great idea! Thanks for watching
I really enjoy the video Nick!!,,👍🙏👊👊
Nice one! When my Suzuki was doing that I thought it was fuel but it was the plugs!
Yup welcome to key west, everything is expensive nowadays! Great catch Nick that's gonna be a good dinner!
Awesome job on the Nick stick. Great video. Sucks about the fuel issues.
Thanks for watching!
I’m really glad you survived those 5 guys
So glad y’all made it! Saw you at Buds working on your boat on the bar. Hope everything was ok. Mahi been tough this year only a few keepers per 20 shorts. Lobsters are making up for it! Stay safe man. Also picked me up a really cool stanz shirt at buds! God bless you guys.
nice video ! Cheers from France
Good catch with the mini rod it did a massive job. Instead of using Garlic salt use Garlic Powder. You can add salt as you wish. This is a big help if you have someone watching their salt intake. I am glad you guys got back okay with the engine that was not running well.
Unfortunately, I can relate. In fact I felt bad just watching you. I can only imagine what was going through your mind. Just glad you made it back in one piece!
Any update on the motor?
Tanks!!!
He's definitely one of your best fisherman along with Joey VT. They do it for the true love and original traditions and putting food on humans tables!!
Cheaper to fix that boat than eating at 5 guys lol
Damn Nick, these videos make me jealous. I would love to go out deep sea fishing. Very nice double up on the light tackle.
The banana did it!
if the garlic salt is too salty, use garlic powder instead. You can always salt it after tasting it. Its hard to use too much garlic powder.
Good call!
Brother you are number 1
Greetings from Massachusetts love your video's
Glad you like them!
Dang that little rod is strong!
Wow glad you made it home safely. Those Grouper were huge. Looked way bigger than the Atlantic grouper??
The gulf limits are nice, I can see NOAA adding a season or catch limit to them and yellow edge soon due to the increase activity over the last few years.
Down here in the Laguna madre and Baffin bay I had my fuel filter rust a hole so I repaired it with a screw and electrical tape. Went on to fish for 3 days.
Nick, too bad you didn't have best mate ever, Bean, on the boat. He would have fixed it, for sure! Or you could have tied a rope to him and let him swim the boat in. 🤣
Respect for using an actual reel and not an electric
Atleast it was flat calm that day! Better than being broke down in snotty seas!
my marine mechanic highly recommends lucas ethanol treatment in the green bottle no issues so far this year
Dude you brought a banana on the boat…..
Another great Video Nick, What model Penn reel are you using on the light rod? Cheers Marty ( Melbourne )
Back at the dock, the next day, Did I miss what the final conclusion to the motors issues was? What did the mechanic find?
Whew. We had to come back at 10mph awhile back. Slow wet ride back. Wound up being a check valve on the tank.
Nick you bent your crew over! Pump it baby!
Those reals are like a video game. Even when the fish come up looking dead with their tongues out, looks like a real like video game lol
What kind of rods system are those?
We just missed eachother! I took my boat to Pulley Ridge from Sanibel last Saturday!
Best thing about your trip other than getting back safely is at least the seas were not 3-5 or bigger. Had my share of those kinda days. Question, you think those snowy grouper were on a wreck? Get hung up any? There is a wreck here off North Carolina about 100 miles off of Wrightsville Beach that holds big Snowies. Season was closed after the numbers of the wreck fell into too many hands. We used Miami type electric reels to reach them. Big fish. Mostly in the 50-60 lb range. The good ole days!
You guys are dropping those baits so fast! I realize there is current there. Are you anchored in 700ft of water? Spot lock? How do you keep the leader from wrapping around the mainline? I have trouble with that. Thanks.
That floating restaurant right there at the boat ramp, in the background, is WAY better than Five Guys, every day of the week. You missed out.
Next time 🙂
Capt. Nick, be glad you’ve got anything but Suziki’s on the BroadMinded, could be fuel, could be wiring harness, but its always something.
well done
At least you guys only lost 1 engine. If was really a bad fuel issue, you would've lost boat engines. Glad y'all made it back in!
Nice boat. What's the make, length, model?
Ohhh, I used to put to much garlic salt in the dry rub marinating. That's when I just used garlic powder & a little garlic salt. 😊
Once again a great video, pity about the motor, but looked like a good day none the less, and totally agree, baking fish is definitely easier to get a great result, too easy to dry the flesh pan cooking 🍳 or on a grill, mind you the fish I catch are not as huge as that grouper
Drain the primary fuel filter on the engine, re-fill and change the plugs. Always have spare plugs onboard.
VST was the culprit
Great video nice to see you get into the tuna you can’t feel to bad about the blue it happens better to eat it than feed sharks we did same thing with a good black out of Dominical got tail wrapped
Just found your channel, great content 👍 , subscribing now
Welcome aboard!
The Banana might had something to with it :)
when fueling a boat if not sure pump the fuel thru a mister funnel ( used on aviation ) it will trap and show if there are contaminants , we use these funnels in alaska , once while motoring thru foreign ports I bought fuel without using the mister funnel less than two hours out used up four racors and two secondary filters....bad fuel.
