  • In this episode we haul out our 42 Freeman for some service work and repairs. We change all the gear lube, the local dealer installs a new lower unit, we paint the bottom, plus fix the wrap. It's all part of owning a boat!

    A friend of mine once told me; "you're lucky because all the fish you eat are free". Hmm...I keep a 32' Cobia CC in a boat yard and didn't have the heart to tell him my fish probably cost 10 times what I could buy them for at the market! Love the video!!

      @@DENNISTunaKiller I do work hard, so I appreciate that, but I hate to break the other news to you. Somehow I make more money than the marina makes (and I don't consider what I make to be a ton, although its a fair amount). Between high end fishing charters, fishing schools, selling boats, endorsements/sponsorships, Social Media income, real estate investments I've done well but of course always want to do better. Hard to take a pay cut and go work for the family marina when there's not enough income there to buy the things I like owning. Sure the family marina was a stepping stone into the fishing business and you're right that my father owns a "famous marina" but being famous doesn't mean it's an extremely lucrative business. The value is in the property of the marina, not the business (yet). If he ever sells it, yes we would have a pile of cash. You probably didn't know father has been married 4 times but I'm sure you've heard divorce isn't cheap. Living in a trailer for 4 years with my mom brother and stepdad wasn't all that long ago... my first job out of college was making $650 a week working for billionaires... Those people had real money. Don't sell yourself short, work hard and you can have the things you want. Don't forget I spent nearly the first decade of my career on a 1982 34' Crusader the marina owned... the cheapest charter boat at the marina... a charter boat it could afford... (not a Freeman)

      @@DENNISTunaKiller all good. Just like to be honest about the situation and put more of the story out there. They say timing is everything in life and a little bit of luck goes a long way. My dad still thinks I'm crazy for buying big center consoles but I bought Freeman boats when they were just getting popular and had no idea they would become such a lucrative investment for myself and so many other people who bought them. The gap is closing but who would have thought any of us would have been making 20 - 50 % selling a used boat after 2- 3 years. No doubt the marina has helped get me started and played a major role in my upbringing and my life, but working at the family marina wouldn't have afforded the lifestyle I wanted (the boats, houses, travel, kids etc). I'm far from where I want to go but we're still working hard to have as good a life as possible. I never expected that social media would be such a big part of my life and income as well but here we are.

    My first summer in college, I scraped barnacles, pressure washed and painted boat bottoms in St. Petersburg, FL. That was 1981 and the 100 degree, 100% humidity days all but killed me! We worked primarily on Hatteras and Bertram yachts , but didn't have the masks or safety suits! I rode my bicycle to the marina every morning and back to the campus of Eckerd College every evening. I started at $3.75 an hour for 12 hours a day, six days a week. They gave me a $3.00 an hour raise the second week. I was too tired to spend much money so I had some decent savings at the end of the summer. I had so much fun and learned so much about boating, I would have worked for free!! I still fish with some of the friends I made then and always have a place to sleep and a boat to use when I am passing through St. Pete. I wouldn't trade that summer for anything.

    Boats are expensive. Some guy on a TV show years ago said, "You know what boat stands for right? Bust out another thousand." He wasn't wrong. My dad caught a gravel bar on the snake river in the 1997 Chaparral 2130 SS and I wasn't even onboard to witness it. But he tore the skag off and shredded both stainless props on the bravo three. The props at the time were $900 a piece and all said and done that mistake cost a few grand. My dad did say that it was pretty crazy running aground at 50 mph and then looking back to see some softball sized rocks coming back to earth. We learned later that a gravel barge dumped fill in the wrong spot and made a shallow spot that should not have been there. I miss that boat. It had a 7.4 and that 454 coupled with the bravo three counter rotating props got with it. On glass that damn thing would do almost 70 with me and a passenger. Those factory big block 21ish foot boats became hard to find not long after the mid 2000's I think. Now all these 21's have silly little V6's. Someday I hope to buy a 2130 SS with a 454. It was expensive to run but you can't beat the 454 and bravo three.

      Thanks Pam. Part of the business model for me. The resale value has been very strong with the long wait times for a new boat (3-5 years). Also working with a few of the other companies they have new products out which we like to try out and help give exposure to

      @@StanzFam Is there still a wait that long as of mid-2023? I thought that demand has cooled tremendously in the past year with the much higher interest rates on loans.

    Nick my son and I watch your videos all the time. You and your family have really made an amazing life for yourself! Congrats!
    Quick question: I noticed they are painting the barrier coat right over the black Ablative paint …I always though you had to sand that off before applying the barrier coat?!

    • @StanzFam
      @StanzFam  Год назад +2

      Thanks for watching! Tell your son we said hey.
      I’m not positive but For the touch ups where the bottom paint or barrier coat is gone I’ve always seen them apply a little fresh barrier and then paint right over it with the bottom paint without sanding. I assume if it was a larger area that needed it they would sand it down and apply more barrier to a bigger surface area. The paint/overall bottom was in decent shape so I’m guessing they didn’t think we needed too much prep work

    Going off your video title the ugly truth is the cost of having a boat. Monthly payments if you financed. Space at home to store the boat, if not you'll need to store it at a marina and that will cost by the foot of your vessel. Boat insurance monthly or yearly. Maintenance fee, boat property tax yearly depends on what state you live in. County assessor value your boat 500k with a 1.1% tax you'll be paying 5500 yearly to uncle same. On top of that mortgage bill, home insurance, gas/electric bills, mobile bills, internet bills, water bills, trash bills, car insurance bills, car payments if not paid off. Food and family bills. Haha! You better have good income if you want to have a luxury life.

    • @StanzFam
      @StanzFam  Год назад

      100% truth! You nailed it! Luckily we don’t have a yearly county tax but sales tax sure is expensive when you buy the boat and register it in Florida for the first time
