  • Some of my favorite Mork & Mindy scenes put together. I know it's not very good. But I just figured out how to do this. Robin Williams was pure genius. There will never be another like him.

The first year (1978) of Mork was unbelievable. I was 13 and I never missed an episode that whole season on Thursday nights. Some Thursdays I'd go to work with my dad at his radio station in Kansas City and I'd go downstairs and watch Mork in the TV station's breakroom. I've heard several times that network TV back then was for kids, teens, and old people and I think this is very true, mostly because those are the people not working with plenty of time on their hands at home. So to bored young teens like myself Mork was a real treat, I'm sure I laughed at all the lighthearted jokes..and Mindy was so cute and funny herself. What turned out to be a real downer was that ABC moved Mork to a new timeslot the 2nd year and the show wasn't ever the same again. In my mind it was a one year wonder but what a year that was!

Mork & Mindy is a prime example of how Network Executives can wreck a smash show. You had a brilliant new shooting star of a comedic talent, matched with an incredibly charming, funny actress who was able to likeably ground the inspired lunacy in reality, A pairing cast sight unseen with each other, who still somehow conspired to have lightning in a bottle romantic chemistry, and who were supported by some wonderful veteran actors, all backed in turn by some of the top comedic writers and producers of the time. Yet the Network Execs couldn't keep their mitts off. Their constant interference hampered the show both practically and creatively, repeatedly switching time slots, demanding changes to the cast line ups to meet some non existent demand from a specific demographic (I was a kid, I loved Fred & Cora!), and wanting to sex things up with more girly skin (the Necroton episodes and the Denver Broncos cheerleader one in S2 are cringe worthy) yet not allowing the main character(s) to deal with sex as part of the human condition.

@John Stewart BUT, Robin did bring awareness to depression. A person can be so funny and appear to be mentally happy but deep down they could be dying from loneliness. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is Robin Williams did not die in vain. R.I.P. Robin Williams.

My parents LOVED this show, and my dad thought Pam Dauber was "cute". So when I was born at the end of 1978, guess what they named me? Yup, I'm a Mindy! My whhhoooole life I got "Where's Mork?!?" or "Nanuu nanuu!" I haaaatted it! Lol. But now, with Robin Williams 😢 being the EPIC legend he was, I'm kind of honored that my name came from something he was apart of!❤️ Nanuu nanuu my peeps!

I mean, there is absolutely no question that Robin Williams was a cultural treasure, but every clip I see of M&M just seems so.. Forced? Maybe it was a "you had to be there" kind of thing, or the humor only worked because it stood out sharply against the broader backdrop of TV at the time? I was born in 1982, just as this was finishing it's run, so who knows.

    • @LFire12

I don't think it's time specific. It's humour specific. Humour is subjective and not everyone gets everything. God knows there's comedians others find hilarious I can't even raise a smile over. The vast majority of commentators on You Tube on the show, seem to come from well after the shows initial run and I've shown these episodes to people not in my age group and have had to pause multiple times to help ease aching sides and tears of laughter. I've never felt anything forced in the show (bar a couple of notorious stunt episodes shunted on them by the network that even the actors hated), for me, for a network sitcom, there was free flowing joy that came out of the show (and especially Williams) that stands it apart even now.
