It depends on the feral - and what stage they are at. Formerly feral cats will do more than sniff - they will greet you joyfully....they make great lap kitties - they will guard the pair of shoes you aren't wearing until you get back by laying on them the whole time. They will lay on your drying gloves in the winter - and they will claim your heart for the rest of their lives.

As someone with experience with cats, a lot of the time you can tell what cat it is just based on their fur texture, the sound of their voice, the shape of their eyes. Or face. A lot of the times I could tell my cats apart without even looking at them, just by them rubbing against my leg.
Trust me, you get used to the differences especially when they get more comfortable w you and begin showing more personality. Plus the difference in fur textures and bone structure. Couldn’t tell mine apart (two black cats who are siblings) for a week or so until I picked on the differences. Guess it would be like having twins with all the same hair color, eye color etc. but as they grow you see how different they become. My cats couldn’t be any more different even though they’re bonded lol (although sometimes in the dark they still trick me)

My cat's feral, had her for a couple of years. She had exposure to my mom, who fed her, but not before she was a few months old. She sniffs me still.
Thank you for giving them a good home, black cats are hard to place. Plus you worry what people might do to them.

I have a cat (we found her on the side of the street when she was only a few months old). Her name is Gizmo and she’s one of the sweetest (most of the time) cats we currently have. She’s like if a dog were in a cat’s body

If she's sweet and dog like, shes not feral. She's friendly. Just vecausr she was from outsire doesn't mean shes feral. You can't touch feral cats and if they're in your home, your care for them has to be limited because you wont be able to handle them, medicate them properly, etc.

oml i have a cat named gizmo that was originally a stray! the people we adopted her (and our other cat jinx) from found her outside as a very young kitten, and she’s an absolute sweetheart

Btw, this "finger test" is also useful for more than just testing whether your cat is feral. Presenting your fingertip to the cat to sniff is similar to the way another cat would greet them and it's basically saying: "Hi! Can I touch you?"
If you are not familiar with the cat, make sure to do it SLOWLY as not to startle them.
If the cat leans it's head forward for even rubs his head against it, it's basically means: "I'm so happy to see you! Yes, please pet me!" If the cat doesn't move closer to sniff, ignores it, looks away and/or tilts it's head slightly away, it means: "I do not want to be touched rn. But you are alright, you may stay in my vicinity." If you pet the cat anyways (depending on their personality and how familiar they are with you, but most likely) will endure it a bit and give another warning that it's not in the moods for cuddling rn, but will eventually try to bite or scratch you. Though not with full strength, more as a last resort: "Hey, I said I didn't want to be touched! Leave me alone!" Many people say cats are "unpredictable" and auddenly bite, but cats give plenty nonverbal warning beforehand. Most humans simply don't understand thus ignore the warnings.
And then if the cat reacts like in the video, immediately creating distance, but not entirely fleeing or hissing, it means it is not scared of you but not used to being touched by humans, aka feral.
If the cat hisses or shows any other signs of aggression it's a very clear: "Don't dare to touch me! Go away!"
It's a mixture of how familiar the cat is with you and their mood, for example even a domesticated cat that loves you might turn it's head if it isn't in the mood to cuddles, don't take it personal! But respect your cats boundaries, they communicate a lot more than most people realize.
I have had feral cats living in my home-many years. Actually, the biggest indicator is whether they meow. Cats only meow for people. Cats that are raised out in colonies or with feral moms outside are told, like wild animals, to be quiet so predators don't hear them. My feral cats-including one who just passed after 15 years-close to her death did meow a little but sounded like a kitten as it was new. Feral cats will cry out in pain. I think it is great that you bring ferals inside. Some cats though don't like a finger in their face because they were abused and dumped.

Me too. My feral kitty has a warm bed, clean litter box and great food which she enjoys. But she refuses to let me touch her. I talk to her in a soft voice but don't get too close to her. I took her in because she has a lot of health issues and she wasn't going to last long outside.

You are living my dream! I've had 6 black cats in my family throughout my life. At the moment, I've recently adopted 2, after 2 of my babies passed. Black cats are just the best. All wonderful and funny personalities. And the most beautiful (in my opinion).

Thank you for posting this video! This is the reference I use when I tell people the difference between feral and stray and how my new rescued baby is stray, not feral (she sniffs my finger but is hesitant).

My litter brothers had first human contact at six weeks. One was the scout of the litter, first to approach a human, never picked up any feral characteristics. He loves nose boops, like a high five when he bring me toys he hunted.
The other one was already a bit hissy and shy. He’s now the most trusting, easy to handle cat I’ve ever had, like a ragdoll, but he still flinches slightly if I move my hand directly towards his face. He’ll roll his head so I can pet behind his ears.
Long story short, this feral cat test checks out.

I have adopted black cats for decades now, not only because I adore them but also they are mistreated or ignored because of superstitions. I was brought to your short because I have a friend who is trying to adopt a cat that showed up at a friend's house. She is in my home for a couple of weeks. I am keeping her separated from the other cats because she has shown me aggression and I am terrified she will hurt my babies! She purrs and seems friendly but out of the blue attacks my legs, feet, and broke the skin through thick work pants and a layer or pressure leggins (very thick). I have had many kitties and they all quickly become affectionate and loving.

So cute!! I’ve been training the feral cats in my neighborhood to be ok near humans. 2 are completely trained and 5 out of 8 will sit next to me on the porch or take food from me and let me pet them. It’s only been a few months, so progress is going great! 🥰

It's so wonderful you have adopted so many black kitties. ❤️❤️❤️ People usually overlook them for more 'attractive' ones and they are the least likely to get adopted. And if you are a foster, this is a huge problem because you can't get another kitten from the street untill the previous foster kitty is adopted..

I have several feral cats that live in my house with me. One of them is Miss Murder Mittens the Feral. She is a black/white bicolour cat, and AGRESSIVELY feral! Her older brother Mr Tabby the Spoilt Feral Housecat doesn't like going to the vet. He has hiss tail between hiss legs the whole time. He's definitely afraid. But, he comes up to me, sniffs and even rubs hiss face on my hand. Hiss older sister Miss Midnight the Spoilt Feral Queen of the Cat Tree is really the same. She even licks my hand. When I took her in to be fixed, the vet said that she was "clearly feral". Her kids were with her and really outgoing, but she just kind of hid in the back of the kennel when people came round.

I love all of your Panthers!! I just love black cats. My boys are respuesta and were all bottle fed. I cut and tiene the cards of Star Heart and his brothers, all panthers. He's the only Panther left and the other two are gingers. Prince, the middle child is finally coming around after 3 years. Odin is so afraid of everything poor thing. He is visión impares UT with those whom have earned his trust; well you have a friend for life. Star Heart, the Panther is the eldest, and he's huge, qeighing in at 25lbs. Too chuncky!

Feral is not a breed, it's a lifestyle. If you can get close enough to it to tell that it's a cat, then it's not feral; it's a stray, abandoned or community cat.
You can do this test with a tiger, too. Though the tiger has to know you personally a bit. 🐯
YOU are my people. I have all black cats and the feral one took 3 years to come around and he is the biggest love bug in the world, but still has things he will not let me do ever that the others will, like give a pill or try to remove matts cause he's a long hair. I have to trick him to do those certain things. still worth it. Black cats and tuxedos are the BEST!! Oh you cracked me up with Lucifer. My cat Lucy, I call her Lucyfer when she's being a butt to the other cats hahahahah. Bless you for having all blackies.
