My point exactly!! You are right. It takes 2 yrs or more to domesticate a feral cat. And, sometime they never adapt. This cat looks to well cared for, to be feral. A stray maybe, but not feral
Took two years for one of mine to even look at me through a window, another four years to get him inside occasionally, and another two years permanent. Lost him two years ago, miss that guy so much.
Thanks for the info, I was thinking 7 months seemed so short for a truly feral cat. I'm at month 10 with my feral cat. She lets me pet her when she's eating and has learnt to meow and play from her adoptive sister, but that's about it so far.

@@lovealways2609 I was going to write a long winded comment based on what is known about the evolution of the modern domestic cat, but thankfully the Internet ate it ... Bottom line is, remarkably, life seems to be especially harsh for unfixed, male cats, even in the concrete jungle, especially, much like solitary male lions, finding a pride to join, given the natural inclination to reproduce, is pretty damn tough, especially when the only way is to defeat a male lion of a preexisting pride. Granted, domestic cats are more like tigers, and leopards, in that they are more adept at being a solitary hunter, but the constant toll of eaking out a territory, and defending it against other, intruding male cats, whilst finding enough to eat, and finding unfixed female cats to mate with, is extremely stressful, even at a genetic level. In fact, cat behaviourists* theorised the reason why the life span of a feral domestic cat is so much shorter than one kept largely indoors, is because of the sheer stress feral cats, especially male cats, go through, is enough to cause, essentially, premature ageing. Hence why he looks way older than he actually is, as he had had a rather hard knock life ... [*= Yup, there are actual PhD programs in Cat/Feline Behaviour. Like all STEM PhDs, it isn't as easy as it sounds, but, if successful, you not only get to call yourself Dr. for real, but you get to study cats all day ... which, if had it been more of a thing that I knew of back when I was 16, in 1990, it something I would definitely have aim for ...]
Yes! Unfixed males make too much testosterone steroid which makes their face round (like moon face like Cushings Disease) and other males don’t like them, they’re often solo their whole life because other cats don’t like them, so they can’t find a tribe. And they “feel” more aggressive inside and they don’t like that feeling either. Even human men don’t like being on steroids. Neutering males before 1years offers them a much more pleasant life.
@@nigelft I work with feral and stray cats, and I have seen several males have that ‘chubby face’ without it being body fat. They often get it from scar tissue and ear mites. Male cats often scratch eachother in the face when they fight. To me he definitely have that ‘look’.

He would let my cat sniff him and let my cat come up to him. He would never approach my cat. One day my cat jumped on my lap with my fiancé sitting next me and I told him to hold out his hand to see what my cat would do. He did and my cat gently rubbed his cheek against my fiancé’s hand. I was so excited, but my fiancé pulled his hand back when my cat pulled his head away. Next time my fiancé came over to visit and was sitting next to me on the couch my cat jumped in his lap and curled up beside him purring. That’s when my fiancé first ever pet my cat. Yea. I've done that with 2 'street' cats in my neighbourhood in the past couple of years since I moved here. One, Mr Grumpy, was a senior who'd been fending for himself on the streets apparently for 7+ years. I felt so sorry for him and took to feeding him daily but couldn't let him in at the time as my own cat, Lottie, hated other cats but when she very sadly died, out of the blue, within a year I was able to encourage Grumpy to overcome his fears if strangers, noises, etc, and come down the corridor to my apartment where I would then feed him. It took a lot of patience to help him overcome his skittishness but I was the only person he trusted and most other people scared him. It was clear he'd had a home before as he used the litter tray immediately after eating without me having to show him where it was! He still had the freedom to come and go as he wanted and I didn't want to just keep him in all the time as he liked to sometimes roam a bit! I had the privilege of looking after Mr Grumpy until the end of August 2021 when he suddenly took ill, I think having a series of strokes, and had to be euthanised. I was heartbroken and he was such a unique, quirky little boy. I'd also been feeding another cat, Boo Boo, and since Mr Grumpy died I've also, with much patience and over many weeks, been able to encourage him to sometimes come in for his food as well. He's still extremely skittish though and bolts at the first sign of anyone else around, noises, etc, but with me he stands on his back legs to reach up and 'kiss' me when I bend down to him, he touches mu face with his paw, etc. He's so sweet! A few months ago a neighbour of mine had been interested in adopting him but her personality wasn't the right fit for him as she was too impatient when he wouldn't come to her, her voice was too loud when she was calling him, etc, and she just scared him off. So, it does take patience, time and a calm manner to help skittish, nervous animals to gain trust and overcome their fears. Also, I've found that with particularly nervous cats when they do allow you to touch them, at their own pace and without rushing them, it's best to avoid suddenly stroking them on top of their heads, especially when they're eating, as that can startle them. Gently stroking them from their necks down to their tails is best and the more you can do that the better, of course, as they get used to the touch and enjoy it. I still have a lot more 'work' to do with Boo Boo as he only comes into my flat, mainly late at night when less people are around, for about 10 minutes at time to eat his food and hang out with me a little bit. He does though roll around on his back at times though with his legs in the air, showing that he's happy!
Had a similar experience, except ours hid under a couch 24/7 for a month or two after we brought her inside...it's been a year and she follows everyone room to room to see what they're up to, I've never met a more social and affectionate cat in my life!
When a stray cat comes to your house and decides he/ she wants to stay, as happened with us, it's such a wonderful feeling that you've gained the trust of a sentient being who needs a home, trust and love.

Dwight was not at all feral - he is too vocal and affectionate. He was living on survival mode - so he had to be on high alert at all times. He was abandoned or lost before he was rescued. Thanks for saving this beautiful Chunky Boi. 💖😸💖
Yes. I am in the process of rescuing a cat that took about two years to finally drop its guard and approach me; one day out of the blue meowing for my help as I called my own cats inside for the evening. Someone had trapped and released him, as I noticed the notch in his ear, but he was definitely not feral, just super shy and abandoned or lost. I call him Scaredy.
One thousand percent agree. I really wish this channel and the people on it would stop calling these cats feral because they are not! They might be stray, or abandoned, skittish or scared but they are NOT feral cats.
General rule: If it's meowing at you, it's a stray. If it isn't, it's Feral. Cats have to learn how to 'talk' to humans and this chunky boy started meowing as soon as he got over the hissing, so you're right, 99% chance he's stray, not feral.

We had a stray come around and he had the biggest face ever, after two months of feeding him outside he trusted us enough to come in and live with us. When we took him to the vet to get him fixed the vet told us that male cats faces get really big until they are fixed and sure enough his face got normal sized within a few weeks.
Agreed! Looks like his left ear might have been clipped before she tamed him a bit. If so, he had been previously trapped and fixed. His weight looked pretty good, so he was eating regularly somewhere.
Gotta love those big, meathead tabby cats, they're awesome pets. We had an orange tabby named Brody who had a huge head, it was 2x larger than it should have been, and he weighed 22lbs (10kg). He just showed up on the porch one day and never left,
I love tabbies and have had 3 up to now. I do love all cats, and animals in general, but I do have a real soft spot for the tabbies. My last one, Lottie, was also fairly big, although not as big as Dwight seems to be, and was gorgeous too. I miss her so much. :-(
1:38 killed me with those WIGGLES. To see Dwight go from being terrified of human interaction to happily enjoying belly rubs (which even some of the friendliest cats don't allow) is something else. BTW for those of you looking to bond with cats - the woman in this video keeps mentioning how Dwight didn't like being looked at. This is something common with cats. Staring is considered predatory behavior to them. Instead, offer them a slow blink, which sends the message that you're safe to be around.

@@purerachet7715 Thank you for being patient with her :) Love and trust take time to build for both people and animals who have been hurt before, but it is definitely worth the wait. She is lucky to have you and her new senior pal!
I’ve found it’s the tone of your voice that makes all the difference when being around cats. A soft toned, quiet melodic voice works wonders if you get it right! I’ve had 13 cats over the years and worked out the vocal “code” when meeting strange cats for the first time….and it’s very effective. And kneeling down closer to their level without forcing the issue, is also a good idea.
I know but i think its our world view that tells us you have to do something to earn love, but love isn't really like that at all, its each other's being ness that we love. Not enough children receive that sense of being enough without doing something to earn the approval. On the other hand Dwight is very well behaved so he is doing something by omission. He's not behaving badly! ❤️
I used to have a cat just liked him. I was 11 years old when I first met him. He was afraid of me and ran underneath the deck. He did meow a few minutes and I was just talking to him. He came out and started to cuddled with me. He even slept on the door mat near the patio door. It was my fault on him. He even liked my sister and parents. That was late September 1981. He was so sweet and friendly stray cat that met other kids in the neighborhood. It took a month and half to adopted him into our home. He even gotten along with our 1st cat, too. I named him Roughneck when he was a stray but, when he was adopted my mother called him Ruffy for being so sweet and friendly cat. He was a cute red tabby cat.
I fostered 3 feral kittens i found in my shed. They droped out within 2 days. But probably cause kittens. Still crazy how cats just understand how litter boxes work .
He showed his belly, the biggest sign of trust, the belly keeps all the organs safe with means big fluffy weak spot, so if the belly is up, there is full trust and the cat relaxes around you and knows "fluff is safe" 😻
As someone who also slowly took in a skiddish stray, this story really hits me. Its always so nice to take in a floofy bud and give them a loving home. Watching them transform into a friend that has full trust in you is amazing. ❤
We adopted a big white boy a few months ago. I suspect he may have a double life. I think he likes the food here though so he's been sleeping on the bed a lot now so I'd say he's ours.
I got to see Dwight on Facebook in a cat group, and it was so exciting each time there was an update. He's such an endearing lil character, even when he was a spicy boi. A little bit of gentle effort and patience sure can go a long way. He just needed to know that he was safe. Then, he did seem to understand that folks were helping him (if I remember right, he didn't even do too badly w/ the vet). It's so great that he is not only loved, but he's also thriving.

The biggest love a cat can show is allowing you to pet their stomach.
Yeah I have a half domestic half bobcat and at first he’d scratch me if I touched his belly but after a while he would voluntarily show his stomach. But the reason they are skeptical and physical about their stomach is because in the wild, their stomach is the softest and quickest way to their major organs.

My point exactly!! You are right. It takes 2 yrs or more to domesticate a feral cat. And, sometime they never adapt. This cat looks to well cared for, to be feral. A stray maybe, but not feral

I was going to write a long winded comment based on what is known about the evolution of the modern domestic cat, but thankfully the Internet ate it ...
Like all STEM PhDs, it isn't as easy as it sounds, but, if successful, you not only get to call yourself Dr. for real, but you get to study cats all day ... which, if had it been more of a thing that I knew of back when I was 16, in 1990, it something I would definitely have aim for ...]
well, judging from his chubby face, I think he was not totally unhappy with living outside.
I absolutely love how she earned his trust. She did it on his terms and was very patient.
Seriously, 7 months is a commitment. Goes to show no cat is a lost cause- they just need time and patience.
That is the only way with the cats - on their own terms ... Otherwise, cat will never apritiate you
That’s what my fiancé did with my cat. My cat was suspicious to strangers and refused to go up to anyone he didn’t know. I knew my fiancé wasn’t a “cat” person. Now my cat is constantly trying to get in my fiancé’s lap when he comes. I even get jealous sometimes that my cat doesn’t want in my lap when he comes visit. 😂😂
Lots of patience with cats, you go at their pace. They will accept you if its genuine. They are smart creatures. Clearly he feels safe.
That cat seems like he could live alone by himself because damn... that's not even fat, he's actually a big cat.

I heard that male cat who aren't neutered have big round cheeks due to the testosterone.
My cat "Uncle", AKA Chunkle, got fixed when he was around 19 months but retained that big ol' cute head.
BRO I followed his story on facebook before he even allowed pets from her. He's gone on such a journey, now has a happy family. He is the best boy.
Thank you for the update!!
Thank you!!! I was so sad thinking that he did not get adopted until I saw your post. Really appreciate you updating!😅
I hope this is true 😭
Dwight is the THE perfect name. He literally looks exactly like a Dwight! What an amazing experience that must have been to gain his trust.
identity theft is not a joke jim!
He just showed up on the porch one day and never left,
As well domesticated ferals tend to be some of the biggest cuddle bugs, at least to the ones who earned their trust.
I love tabbies and have had 3 up to now. I do love all cats, and animals in general, but I do have a real soft spot for the tabbies. My last one, Lottie, was also fairly big, although not as big as Dwight seems to be, and was gorgeous too. I miss her so much. :-(
Probably unfixed that why big puffy face
Bruh 10kg is not ancat thats a mountain lion
@@lordpopo4450 Maine Coons often weight 10-12kg (22-25lbs), many really large tabbies do too.
When she said he was estimated to be only two years old I was shocked
Agreed, outdoor cats don't live nearly as long. I'm glad he's found good people to keep him safe during bad weather.
He looked mad old
Me too. I thought he is old 😳
Me too. But shocked in a good way cause now that he's not living outdoors he can hopefully have a good and long life.
When cats becomes couch potato they're cute, but when i do it im supposed to "get a life"?
Next time i reincarnate i wanna be a cat.

I also wanna be a cat, don't mind my pfp or name
You are trying to be "cute", but cats ARE cute.
Dwight was eating good out there in the wild. 😂 Nobody turns down an easy meal though.
DUDE!!!! IM ALWAYS STARING AT THEIR EYES!!!! NO WONDER WHY MY FERALS HATE ME!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
@@paze717 Sure thing, and best of luck! Thank you for looking out for feral cats!!!
I just adopted a 2 year old girl from the shelter. She love loves my senior male but does not like humans. I have had her 3 months. I can't wait for interaction.
He's got very distinctive face, adorable ☺️
Males that aren't fixed develop chubby faces
Happens when the balls are kept
Dwigt: does nothing
Everyone: good boi
That is the previlage of cats right there.
Just cats in general
It is not that different from:
Your children: Do nothing
You: Brag to everyone how amazing your children are.
🐱🐱🐱 rule the world !
He is utterly gorgeous. His face is priceless.
Honestly, he is such an adorable cat
His cheeks omg
Two years old and he is a bear of a cat. I don't know if that's chonk or muscle.
Regardless he is a sweet, beautiful boy and he deserves all the love.
pure tiger muscle
Yes, I agree.
He became more fluffy since his hair wasn’t all smooshed down
👍
I love it when cats are like that! 💕
PLEASEEE let us know when Dwight gets ADOPTED!!!😁😀😄😄 We all want to know when he finally has a home forever!!!😻😻😻😸😸☺️☺️😊🤗🙂🌻🌼🌹🌷🌺💕💕💓💗💖💖
Feral Cats are so much harder to adopt out but he's such a sweetie - I hope he finds a home!
You need a cat. He is perfect!!
I was hoping she'd keep him. 💖🐈💖
He’s not feral now - he’s a love bug and I don’t know who could resist his funny cute face and fluffy tummy 🥰
I fostered 3 feral kittens i found in my shed. They droped out within 2 days. But probably cause kittens. Still crazy how cats just understand how litter boxes work .
In awe at the size of this lad absolute UNIT of a cat
hmmm if I were living in a bush I'd be skittish to

He showed his belly, the biggest sign of trust, the belly keeps all the organs safe with means big fluffy weak spot, so if the belly is up, there is full trust and the cat relaxes around you and knows "fluff is safe" 😻
Breaking news
I'd love to see your fluffy weak spot...
@@sunjester8254 well.. honey, that might be a problem, my "weak spot" is smooth as a dolphin🤗 so no fluff 🤣
@@siljemartins7447 Actually, I prefer a shaved kitty. Keeps me from getting fur in my mouth when I kiss one. =oP
@@sunjester8254 well my kitty likes more than just a kiss so... 🤣 my kitty is too demanding XD
As someone who also slowly took in a skiddish stray, this story really hits me. Its always so nice to take in a floofy bud and give them a loving home. Watching them transform into a friend that has full trust in you is amazing. ❤
He looks like he's been eating at 10 different places....big boy.
Turns out he's actually got 5 different owners across 3 states..
he doesnt look stray lol
We adopted a big white boy a few months ago. I suspect he may have a double life. I think he likes the food here though so he's been sleeping on the bed a lot now so I'd say he's ours.
😂
Lol he’s a hunter
I got to see Dwight on Facebook in a cat group, and it was so exciting each time there was an update. He's such an endearing lil character, even when he was a spicy boi.
A little bit of gentle effort and patience sure can go a long way. He just needed to know that he was safe. Then, he did seem to understand that folks were helping him (if I remember right, he didn't even do too badly w/ the vet).
It's so great that he is not only loved, but he's also thriving.

Everyone has stuff in life that brings them joy. Sometimes it is the seemingly small things that end up the most treasured. Whether casual affection, or deep attachment, there's no shame in responsibly finding happiness in the presence of endearing little creatures.
I mean...
Whatever boats yer float, m'dude.
It takes literally months and months and months for a cat to come around To trust you. I have experience. I have a feral myself but thank you so much for taking him in and feeding him, he’s a beautiful baby. You did not give up on him when most people would.
It took her 7 months she said.
Yes it does
It does take so long but it's so worth it. I have three who used to be strays
What a gorgeous big boy, that round face 🥰
Dwight: I mean, the freedom was ok. But the heater, the food, the couch, the love. I even have my own servant. Maybe I'll just stick around.
