I like how you don't just show your successes, but also your learning experiences (there are no mistakes in faceting). With Garnet, I have also experienced lots of chipping, even faceting really lightly, it's hard to get good quality garnet.
I cant express how grateful I am for what you do. Growing up on the line between middle class/poor the world of gem cutting was an unknown aspect and never realized its an art form and takes great patience and creativity. You have introduced this humble and middle aged carpenter to the passion that had been missing from creating something from nothing while enjoying and loving the work at the same time. You've forever changed my life in a positive way. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This was absolutely fascinating to me. My family has always had beloved and beautiful jewls in the family, and i always thought it had to be a machine that cut those so nicely. Little did i know the amout of hand work that goes into this. Just fascinating thank you.
One of my favorite gems. I have a 68 carat flawless reddish purple rough rhodolite garnet (transparent) that I never had cut. Someday. Great video. I learn more from folks mistakes than I do from their successes. Thank you.
Nice video, Cliff. You dealt with the disconnect much better than I would have. I have a notion that those specks are iron. Here's an idea... Get a Neodymium magnet. They are extremely powerful and aren't expensive... You don't need a large one. If the specks are indeed iron, the gemstone will be attracted to the magnet. If you have difficulty obtaining a Neodymium magnet let me know. I have a couple laying around the shop and will gladly send you one. Thanks for the video my friend.
Nearly all garnets are attracted to such magnets due to Fe being a part of their chemical formula. Most garnets are intermediate blends of two or more end members species so there is almost always iron even in flawless material. I have seen attraction to such gems using neodymium magnets and the force is usually strong enough to pick up the garnet if not at least to drag it across the table in the case of larger stones. Therefore, this is not a conclusive way to determine the identity of such inclusions, but rather a helpful test in addition to other tests which can confirm the identity of a garnet gem as opposed to other types of gems which may look like a garnet.
I'd guess you're "spot" on about the little opaque inclusions being magnetite. It's a common oxide found in iron and magnesium rich garnets. As a geologist I think they look really cool in this stone. Two minerals for the price of one!
My facet rough guy started tossing his garnets in a tumbler and it makes it so easy to pick inclusions/magnetite without having to window each one of them.
Hello Mr. Vintage Time, I hope Jaws and the family are doing well. Beginner facete here. I would like to ask sir, can you please try and facet another garnet for us. Thank you for showing all the issues one has in cutting a garnet, but I feel like you will cut a beauty. Thank you for sharing all you do with gems. I think the director Jaws wants to see it too. LOL
Shame about the glue mishap, I'm sure it would have looked even lovelier than it does now without that. Thanks for sharing, Cliff, and better luck next time!
I have a box full of gems that have fallen off the dop while cutting the crown. re-aligning them can be done with a hot dopping method using wax and a guess and check method.... but who's got time for that?! Cheers for sticking on with it 🍻
Hello I recently found about 20 pea sized admolite garnets in bedded in garnet shist in Georgia, US. I. Think of turning them into ear rings for my wife and daughters. How big must a garnet be before cutting it? I also found a citrine in the same rock.
Greetings from the Czech Republic, the land of garnets and moldavites (callet here vltavín - river Vltava). As I am hobby gold prospector, I always find garnets and I want to do something, but equipment is not cheap. Is it possible to facet just by hand? Just few garnets for self made golden jewel from gold I found. Thank you for any advice.
Its nice to see practical things from products originating from Tanzania, your video has really inspired me.🦾it would also be nice for you out there try to have the idea of the same machines or even used ones be installed here in various regions and worksmanship done here, as most people are afraid to facet small gemstones due to various reasons; some of which are, "gems being small", "technical know how", "practical experience","lack of resources","lack of gem stone machinery and tools", and the like.💎
If they are parcels of garnets hopefully you have more luck with your garnets. I've found them either too dark or had hidden inclusions or some foreign material within them.
I would guess depending on location of origin is biotite inclusions I have found from certain areas that there are locations that are very rich more often then not included with mica throughout so I would think black mica aka biotite
Very good, I wanted to cut a garnet. And the worst thing about it is when the stone takes off from the dop, do you have any tips to stick it back in the same position?
If there is any glue left after it detaches try to fit the gem in where the original glue outline is. Even then if you can match it up the gem will still be misaligned. Cheers
@@VanDyk555 It's in the Melbourne area. It's too far from where I live and with lockdown in Vic there are still too many restrictions at the moment. Join a local gem club there are few around Melbourne.

Yes Paul, high quality garnet is getting expensive. Cheers
@@VintageTimeGems...I can't BELIEVE the garnet fell off the dopp stick! So sorry.. how unfortunate...ugh...nice result though! You Rock!

I was hoping to pick your brain...is there any recommendation you can make for a decent used faceting machine?

Thanks John....Great idea. I have some Neodymium magnet (earth magnets). I will test that out. Cheers Cliff

Yes many gem cutters and people do like the natural inclusions and foreign material within a gem as it gives it a distinct characteristic. Cheers
Thank you for another very informative video!!!
Thanks MM. Cheers Cliff
Thank you for your great helpful Video and the link, i like this Design👍
Lovely colors from the umba River.
Thanks Shane.

I always wondered how the gems were transferred to do the crown with precision very well explained
Great content- appreciate your time and effort
That intro music is so hype
Great great, I follow you all the time
Thanks
Can't wait till my machine gets here 🥰
Good luck!!

Hi Kathy, things like this can happen. The gem still looks pretty good though.
Thank you sir for this educational video.
Thanks Jose...
This is garnet back together!
Cliff, it is still a beautiful gem!
Thanks Juanita....
Looks pretty even to me! 🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍
It still turned out beautifully. Thank you for walking through the steps and how you worked through the detachment issue.
What was the final carat wt?
Thanks Tam...The final carat weight is mentioned in the final reveal of 1 carat.

Great recovery job! Does a lot of "sugar" in garnets compromise faceting - like open pockets on the surfaces or limiting the light-play?
Like the new video intro
Thank you.
Aw, there was a plane crash in Tanzania, Cor blimey! 🕺🕺🕺
We have garnets up here in Pennsylvania, US but they have even more obstacles than those ones.
Quality garnets are very expensive. Love to get hold of some.
Muy bonito
It's still a beautiful Gem...
Do you ever facet the Pyrope Variety!
Is it the same stone as this!
We’re to buy some of those garnets
Linda gema e lapidação.
Thank you...

So beautiful...apakah semahal diamond..?
Can you show me from beginning to end how you set up the protractor for cutting a gemstone
I'm a newbie
Nice I'm looking at some parcels atm

How much would something like this cost
I'm looking for a good website to buy rough garnets and amethyst in the U.S. Anyone have any suggestions?
PROFESOR CLIF ,USTED PUEDE DARME CLASES DE FACETING STONE....
hermoso trabajo ,
I found a rock that is filled with small tiny garners but removing them is very difficult. Any ideas without using acid?
Hammer
Don't be disheartened, Cliff. This is the part where you try, try again.
Not really disheartened, just annoyed that I should have used the epoxy. Least I tested the design so it works well. Cheers
Linda pedra.
Thank you Santiago....Best Wishes Cliff
Very rare that you have so many trouble with a stone
Hi Ray, mishaps can happen. I should have used another glue, but I had a workshop and I needed a quick attachment. Cheers

Were did you get those transfer blocks?
A friend bought them for me. They are not that easy to get hold of. Of you ask on faceting forums you should be able to get them.
@@VintageTimeGems thanks
Do you hold lessons by any chance Sir? I’m in Vic.

Oh no cliff, not another detachment from the dop. The garnet looked OK at the end but realise the facets don't meet. Try again mate
Hi Tony, this was a different type of detachment. Usually glue detachments are rare but it can happen. Cheers Cliff
Bom demais a brasões Pravoceis bom vídeo
I have in raw form un polished and un cut with different sizes.
Viên đá quý đẹp nhất thế ❤️❤️❤️👌👌💯💛
like stones with inclusions better, gives them more character and visual interest.👍
True. Sometimes they make a great effect, but they can also fall apart whilst faceting if unlucky.
