How lovely that you got to cut a garnet your dad found. I know naught about gem cutting but for what I've learnt on your channel but I find your videos so relaxing and calming, I've shared them with my friends!
OH how I envy YOU and your TALENT!! Garnet just happens to be my birthstone! I always wanted to be a gemologist but having very young children at that time, just wouldn't allow me to leave for the course. Then, as the years went by, "life" got in the way...I finally ended up selling fine jewelry. That's as close as I got...but I loved my profession. Now I'm retired and not physically able. Now that I've found your channel, I hope to live vicariously through YOU! Thank YOU for sharing this wonderful video and I hope to see more! ❤💎
Watching you cut that garnet blew my mind. I have a couple of antique diamond rings and the jewels are miniscule! The effort that had to go into those chips to make them able to be set in a ring defies imagination. The time to cut ONE almost makes me wonder how it is even worth the cutters effort. 6 rubies and 1 diamond and the ring was valued at $120
your jeweler that was evaluating the stone and setting looked at what he would pay ....not what it would sell for....and had to assume the gems were synthetic so basically gave a value for the gold
I love garnets. I am 38 years old and I never knew purple colored garnets were even possible until a few years ago. On the Gem Shopping Network I saw my first purple garnet ever. The Almandine.
Garnet is my favorite semi precious gem! I fell in love with it the minute I saw it on one of my relatives and purchased it in a ring right after :) Been wearing it every single day ever since, for 10 years already 😄❣💎 The way you cut it was really amazing, thank you for sharing! 🤓🔥 It's low-key sad though how much of gemstones gets cut to make them look commercially beautiful.. 🥲

Hi Cliff, yours videos inspired me to start cutting gems, at first I saving money for machine probably facetron (tell me what you think about it) and second I meet two cutters in my country. First one cutting for 40 years and is a well of knowleadge. Second one cutting for 20 years but I think his parents or grandparents were cutting because I gave him some african (tanzanian) rubies from my bussines partner which has a mine and his work was so much better than the old profesor. As always I realy like your videos and keep it up good work. And sorry for my english :-)
Hello Cliff, Thank you for your videos on cutting gemstones. I am a professional artist, and I'm currently working on a museum quality reproduction of the Circa 625 Anglo-Saxon Helmet from the Sutton Hoo ship burial. This helmet has around 30 x 3mm square, flat faced, garnet stones decoration under the eyebrows. I've had problems obtaining flat-faced garnets, as the suppliers only stock faceted gems. Therefore, I'm going to have to remove the facets to created the requisite flat square inset stones. Can you please advise me whether I'm likely to encounter any problems if I simply flatten (grind off) the facets by rubbing the garnets on lubricated wet or dry carborundum paper? Also, the best way to polish them and what cutting lubricant to use? Many thanks for any assistance. Thank you, Rick
THANK YOU! I always enjoy watching someone who is expert make something beautiful. AND I enjoy well photographed-edited video. Thanks for taking the extra time to set up and video your work. You are able to make a long and tedious process into an interesting video narrative. I can guess that is nearly as difficult as cutting a stone.
Thank you for this video. I have a few small garnets which I have prospected myself from an old mine and I'm looking forward to cutting them. Many of them have their own crystal facets so I'm not sure weather just polish some of them and not facet. Mine are reaaly dark stones rough, so don't know if I can get any light into the gems.
If you cut facets using the same angle, and using precise divisions on the gear, why do you still need to balance them later after that? Why don't they come out perfectly even though the angles you used were perfect?
What do you think of the “sapphire & zircon” soil bags you can buy from our Aussie sellers? I got some from Etsy &; I found some glassy/waxy looking stones that really stood out from the dried mud-like dirt. They were heavier & hard as hell to cut & had a mix of colour from green, blue, grey & red - tan. Some look black but silvery lines. I’ve tried to learn how to identify sapphires, zircons, etc but not too sure. I also have trouble cutting & polishing using only a cheap dremel with new diamond burs & sandpaper but just can’t manage that shine, only a dull shine that shows colour in the sun. I need advice on polishing with this method. Or should I just keep going until it shines?

Hello! Could you tell me the name of this glue that you use to glue the stone in the dop?
Is there a way to tell if your mast is alligned to the grinding disk? How do you know if it's in the right position for faceting? Do you have to start at a certain point and then put in your angles?,
The mast needs to be perpendicular to the disk surface - in both axes. Once aligned, the mast position does not matter - the angles remain the same even if you move the mast a bit.
What would you suggest to buy for a good set up to get started? My husband and I live in north Idaho and have collected all kinds of gems and garnets and would like to start creating beautiful pieces?
Dear Cliff hi, thanks very much for your great art work, it is always appreciated mate. I have 4 questions regarding the acrylic glass you use for polishing if you would answer please. Is it a particular type and quality you use for polishing, or a good quality plexiglass would do the trick? Also, the approximate price for an 8 inch round plexiglass with 1/2 inch hole on it in Australia please?? And, as you have mentioned before, one side should be used for 50k and the other side for 100k cerium oxide, how long each side should be used for polishing until it is no longer good for the job, the trick to understand it please ? And finally, Some of the cutters use Acetone to clean it, is it OK? Thanks for your time mate.
1- I use 6 mm X 150 mm perspex discs (standard perspex) bought from gem suppliers. 2- Cost is $14 AU each (but more for a larger one if can actually buy them) 3- Mine have lasted 2 years 4- I use Metholated Spirits. I find acetone to harsh and the fumes smell. Cheers
I'm a beginning gem cutter. I have some CZ and wonder if you can point me to a faceting diagram for a beginner? Also, I have not found a video showing a gem cutter applying the diagram's values to the actual cutting of the stone. I would love to see a video showing the cutter take the diagram's valued and transfer this to the actual cutting from beginning to end. If you know of such a lesson please send me the link, if not, perhaps you would consider making such a video as your explanations are better than others I have viewed.
