1983 Def Leppard exploded on to the scene with their Pyromania album. In 1984, the drummer lost his arm in a car crash. The band waited for him to learn how to play with 1 arm and his 2 feet and put out their biggest Album, Hysteria in 1987….he still plays the drums for Def Leppard and they are touring this year and it is amazing and Def Leppard rocks !!

Completely disagree, this is a perfect interpretation for a live version. The buildup is immaculate. The record version has been out for quite sometime so everyone was familiar with it. This was their way of puttin a twist on it and it works beautifully.
Edit: the reason this is a perfect live version is due to how they worked the crowd.

Def Leppard’s drummer, Rick Allen, was in a car crash on New Year’s Day 1984. Allen lost his left arm in this crash. Doctors were able to reattach it; but when they did they discovered infections in his arm that led to having his arm amputated. While recuperating after the accident, Allen looked into ways to try and play the drums. He discovered a system that could enable him to play like he could before.
What he currently uses is a series of foot pedals geared for his left leg. Through hard work, dedication, and training, he was able to master this system properly and could easily play with his left leg what he used to do with his left arm.
This was filmed in 1988; during their Hysteria tour.

To give a sense of the band's relationship, Joe Elliott said in an interview, like only a true brother could, that one of the benefits of Rick's accident was that he finally had to stop playing endlessly long drum fills they were always on him about.
Drum technology was at the point where electronic drum kits, drum triggers and sampling were coming into use. While he was recuperating from his surgery, in his hospital bed, he would practice playing some of the songs by tapping his foot against the foot of his hospital bed. Once he had realized that he could do it, he had someone contact SImmons Drums, who had been selling electronic drum kits for a few years, to help design a new kit, so that he could play the snare parts with his left foot. They basically created two kits, one to play by hand and another to play by foot.

Up through their Pyromania album (1984?) drummer Rick Allen has both arms. Shortly thereafter, he lost one arm in a car accident. He learned to play with one arm (and additional foot pedals) and the band released the album Hysteria in, I think 1987.
This is definitely a tamer version of the song than the album version. Although the album starts slow, it doesn’t use an acoustic, and the real “drop” occurs where the pause is in this video. The crowd was expecting it, but it was just a tease.

Flipped his corvette on a country road, flew through the sunroof, with the seat belt slicing off his arm...a nurse happened to be driving by and helped save his life.....doctors tried to reattach and althoguh they initially believed it had worked, did not take...almost lost the other arm to infection as well...in hospital, he came up with the concept to play with his feet to compensate for the arm...the band waited it out for him like a true family...and the Thunder God as he's known became legendary

After Rick Allen's accident, Def Leppard also lost their producer, Mutt Lange, two other projects. They agreed to wait for him. By the time he could come back to help them with the album, the costs had run up so much that they were told they would have to sell 5 million copies to break even. They sold 20 million!

      @robertkennedy5414 23 дня назад

Rick had finished his drum tracks before the accident happened, and the band was understandably more focused on Rick and his recovery. Due to the amputation, Mutt had to leave because he had committed to producing other records, and the band had so much success on the previous two albums, they didn't want to bring in someone else. By the time Mutt was free to re-join and finish the album, Rick had started working on his electronic kit with Simmons Drums. The only way they were going to replace Rick in the band was if he couldn't play live anymore.
      And the rest…

I saw this concert about 5 tour stops prior to this being filmed. The energy was through the roof and to this day, it’s the best show I’ve ever seen. The band didn’t know if they would ever be able to play live again when Rick lost his arm. Not only could they play, they were the biggest touring band of the era. They were so excited to be on stage together and they all were at the top of their game. Check out Too Late For Love or any other track from this show.

The drummer, Rick Allen, lost his arm in a car accident shortly after the band released their big breakthrough album, "Pyromania." Even though the band was under tremendous pressure from their record company (to get another album out), as well as heavy financial pressure, they stuck by Rick and refused to replace him. Rick told them he was going to play again and that was good enough. The band waited over a year for Rick to recover and develop a special customized drum kit that he could play using 1 arm. It was worth the wait. Their next album, Hysteria, was the biggest one of their career and sold over 20 million copies.

Def Leppard is a band from late 70s, they still hold different concept of a band than what today's band with 1 diva leader. It used to be members hold of the his/her band lile a family. Steve Clark (the blonde guitarist) died in an accident and it took several years for Def Leppard to replace him with Vivian Campbell.
The drummer was in an accident and lost his arm. He struggled to relearn everything he knew how to drum and created a new set of drum he can play. By the way, he was one of the best drummers in the world before his accident.
Vivian Campbell had cancer, the band waited until he recovered before releasing new album and went on tour.
Def Leppard has full control over the rights to their songs, produces their own albums and manage their live tour. Big record labels don't have any power over them. That's why Taylor Swift who toured with them for CMT (cross over live sessions) learn how to take over her songs from big record labels and greedy managers.
FYI: Def Leppard'w album Hysteria was the first album which ever beat Michael Jackson's by number of records sold. The album was produced in partnership with RJ "Mutt" Lange, who later made Shania Twain an icon (also married her).

This band is so iconic!! I've seen them in concert 3 times. In 1996, 2001 & 2021. All these different eras of their career and they sounded GREAT each time! Joe's voice was actually really "bad" here in this performance. His voice isn't usually quite this "gravelly". His voice was tired from all the shows. Joe Elliot's voice is still so phenomenal though at 64 yo.
    Great reaction pick, Britt! ❣️

Rick Allen initially lost his arm in a car accident but doctors were able to reattach it. However he developed an infection that threatened the other arm as well and the decision was made to remove it. He spent hundreds of hours learning to play drums with his feet and as he comically stated “you can really consult the book of one armed drummers”. When the band were working up to their Hysteria tour they booked several small clubs to see how Rick would do. They had a stand by drummer scheduled for the mini tour but he missed the first gig in Dublin, Ireland and Rick went on and never missed a beat! In my opinion Rick Allen is the greatest drummer alive!

Interesting live version, but the studio version is better.

Phil Collen, and Steven Clark ... the two guitar players for Leppard... were known for their drinking and substance issues... mostly drinking... but they were an incomparable duo on instruments ... The terror Twins... was the tongue in cheek nickname for the two

also.. this whole band had been mates.. friends... for a LONG time.. and Joe was never a self-centered guy... he leaned on the band and wanted everyone to be amazing

I like the pauses because they recognize the audience, and they get to part of the show. Instead of just cheering . It is an audience solo.

Britt your facial reactions are priceless!!! Keep it going girl. Love the hat BTW - I was born in Los Angeles way back when not all of the "freeways" were in place yet. Not the 405, or 110 or 105, or 91. You may have to look up those when you get a chance.

Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm in a car accident. He not only found a way to continue doing what he loves, playing drums, he is also an Artist!! He is an Amazing Man!! He is truly an Inspiration!!
Sadly, we lost Steve Clark. He was such a Huge Talent!!! He is sorely missed and never forgotten. RIP Steve.

If that guitar intro made you feel like you're ready to pass out, you need to listen to Roy Clark's "Malaguena". If it had strings, Roy could make it sing.

Wow, I’ve never seen this performance…thanks for sharing Britt! Def Leppard is on of my favorite 80s rock bands, much better than many give them credit for. A hard rockin bunch of fellows who are great musicians. (I really became a big fan after what happened to Rick, the way his mates stood by him…not many would wait like that.)

Oh girl, Def Leppard played Sat. night in Truist Park Atlant to about 40,000 people. They were incredible and have been rockin for 40 years. Journey played before them, also amazing. So many great shows in Atlanta right now. You need to be going to some of them. They ain't getting any younger. You missed Heart last month. A 10 out of 10 show.
