Nice upgrade and entertaining video. After a couple of years of printing, I find myself forsaking the attached spool holders and using standalone spool holders a majority of the time. They can be placed wherever it is convenient. Some machines like the CR-10's spool holder and this one for the TAZ6 that you printed would stay. I've never attached the stock spool holder on others like the Ender 3. I do like and use spool hubs to center the spool to give the spool a smoother roll off of the filament to the extruder.

This reminded me of the earlier 3D Printing Nerd. Just Joel, doing and talking about what he loves. I miss the old days. I'm happy the channel took off and became so popular. But you lose something. . . the small room feel. Knowing everyone around. I'm not mad. I just miss 300 baud and every person who could afford a 2nd (or seven!) phone line running a text only BBS or DDial chat. When everyone was in your area code because long distance was SO expensive. It's bigger now, it's more fun but also more dangerous. We had softball games, cookouts, camping trips, nerds outdoors.

Joel I just acquired one of these Taz 6 3D printer, it had some issues which some soldering and fixing has resolved. At 6 years old, I really haven't seen the company offer any 32-bit or BL Touch style upgrades. Have you tweaked yours at all? It prints OK, but sure is a bit dated compared to newer machines. I do like that print head support and quick change via their fork of Cura. But with SKR, Duet and other boards out there, this seems like a fun machine to modernize.

    Only 2 comments I have:
    1. You are not the first, but I keeping hearing about US 3D printing people having issues measuring in MM and needing a metric tape measure. I've never seen a tape measure sold in the US that didn't have MM on it. What am I missing with everyone seemingly buying another tape measure just for metric?
    2. I had to pause the video because I was laughing too hard from Sean getting taken out by the zip tie end. It was too perfect.

Glad your lulzbot works... A coworker got a Mini shortly before October, and the thing took an extraordinary amount of work to get acceptable looking prints, despite multiple people with lots of 3d printing experience working together on it. I have a couple Taz 6s, one w/Aerostruder, and one with the fairly horrible and over-priced Lulzbot V3 dual extruder. I will be making these spool holders for both machines. Why a teflon tube is used on the Taz is beyond me. The tube servers no practical purpose, being unattached at the extruder. One thing I've noticed is that most (but not all) PLA filament gets very brittle very fast (over night) if left in the teflon tube. It's so brittle it breaks just from the slight stress of bending inside the tube, and it's a big pain to remove short broken pieces from the tube when that happens.

    • @StuffWithKirby

Chuck Hole a 40mm deep fan makes the dual extruder v3 work far better. Mine stock would jam immediately after a few layers. You need longer bolts also for mounting it.

Bob Sharpie thats false. Everything is still stock except hotend. I dont think changing spool location makes a difference in quality of machine. The hotend changed because he wanted 1.75 and advances in tech since it came out makes the aerostruder print both flexible and regular without having to swap hotends.

The taz 6 is excellent, but its not a 32 bit system. I love how modular it is with the optional tool heads it has.

I love the Lulzbot Mini and it is a workhorse as well. Seeing the extruder mod makes me want to do the same (after I finish using all the spools I have) but what about making the Lulzbots quieter??? They are great, but very loud machines. What would you do to minimize the sound of this machine?

rivera82falcon a dampener on the y axis motor will greatly lower the noise. The mini2 is also pretty quiet with the silent stepper controls

@@StuffWithKirby I have the last release of the mini 1.04 which comes with dampers on all the motors but it's still very loud to me. I have an Artillery Sidewinder X1 which doesn't and is incredibly quiet. I'm assuming the stepper motors are reason for this? Something I'll have to learn about and "fix" for my needs.

rivera82falcon lulzbot sells stepper motor isolators for the y axis on the mini. Quiets it down very nicely.
I’ve added the isolator to my y and x on my taz 6 as well.

@@jim2386 I'll check their site later today for that. I want to keep using this printer for the small detailed items but I need the noise to drop. Thank you for the heads up.

    1) The tube for holding the spool was already seen.
    2) This was too long to explain that you moved the spool to a new location using someone else's design.
