Absolutely stunning videography work. I bet that couple were over the moon with the footage that you captured for them too! Thanks for such a super informative video
Just got the GH5 having used the Olympus EM5 mk2 for the last couple of years. I have to say your low light footage looks great, far better than what I've been used to. Thanks for a useful vid, appreciated.
FINALLY someone who understands why 4k acquisition is so important, even when exporting at 1080. I’m so sick of the “ehhh no one has 4k TVs”. Well today, a lot of ppl do have 4k TVs first of all, but as a wedding videographer, shooting EVERYTHING in 4k 60fps is soooo nice in editing. I’m just about to purchase a gh5 and an Olympus 12-40 2.8 for my work (video stuff) and I’m really excited. For weddings, I use a cinema camera, but for everything else, I’m stuck with my Canon 5d3 and I’m sick of its shitty 1080p footage despite it’s amazing shallow depth of field on my Sigma 1.4 Art Glass. My friend compared his gh4 footage (4k downscaled to 1080) and despite the obvious depth of field/focal range differences the gh4 footage was so much better in editing. Canon has great color science but with the log added to the gh5.... no contest. Canon, you’ll still be my photography choice but you are seriously falling behind in the sub $5k video world.
Yep I'm all in with Panasonic cameras when it comes to video. The usability, features, and price point are all spot on for what I'm looking for as a videographer.
Mr. Slye... thank you very much. I was extremely disappointed that my order for the new Blackmagic 4k was cancelled, and I needed a replacement very quickly for my feature film and several short films I'm working on... your review showed me that this camera is probably the camera for me anyway considering I am a huge supporter of Panasonic.
I see this is a year old, so hopefully you've figured it out... but for anyone who stumbles across this and wonders: it's controlled with the round dial on the top left of your camera. With this dial, you can switch between single shot, burst mode, 6k burst, self-timer, etc.
Thanks Andy, I'm an indie filmmaker who is looking for a new camera coming off of the Sony A7s. I'm aware that I'm losing the full frame censor and the low light ability, so I was looking at the GH5 and the Fiji TX2 or the Olympus EM1 ii. Thanks for this review! You may have sold me on the GH5.
Thanks for watching, Geno. I've been a Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera user for over 3 years and I'm extremely satisfied with the features, quality, and intuitiveness. Here's all my GH5 filmmaking gear if you're interested: geni.us/YTgear
Oh, I enjoyed your wedding footage as much as your advice. I have a GX8 & am not a pro (any more). Don't need much video, but still like good quality. I've considered upgrading to a Canon M6 or Fuji XT-2 APS-c, but probably don't need to. I really like the GX8's ergos, esp. the tilting EVF and swivel LCD. I have a feeling my 14-140 Panasonic lens is the weak point. Good range, but not that sharp, it seems... and SLOW f #s. I might try a good lens with a speedbooster & see what that does.
I'm looking to buy two of these bad boys. few questions (for anyone using this camera during weddings): 1. how much space does a typical wedding gig take up on a drive? not sure how much hard drive space needed (for a year of weddings). 2. with the new firmeare coming out in the summer for 400 Mbps what's the ideal SD cards to purchase? 3. is it better to use one of the new OIS GH5 camera lenses (18-35mm) or is the Sigma+adapter more ideal? this is along with a Gimbal btw . I noticed some of your comments saying you use the Sigma but any negatives to it? it's slightly more pricey than purchading the price of the new Leica Panasonic offers. Any help appreciated! thanks for all the replies.
1. For a typical wedding, I can get by with just two 64GB SD cars in my GH5 (along with one 64GB each in my GH4 and G7 as B-cams). Here are the SD cards I currently use: geni.us/PNY64 2. For the new 400Mbps firmware update, you'll need V60 minimum SD cards. Here's an example of one: geni.us/Delkin64 3. Any Panasonic OIS lens will be better at stabilization (because of dual IS) compared to the Sigma/Speedbooster combo. For me the advantage of the Sigma/Speedbooster is the DoF and fast aperture for low light.
Thanks for the reply much appreciated. I haven't really looking into the dual IS but I'm scared that I may not have enough light if I go that route... hmm tough decision.
Hello dear ..! When we do shoot with GH5 in day light which filter u use I have problem with over blown effect ..! If u have any tips please tell ..!thank you
The Problem i Am Having is i am Using a Neewer 7'' Monitor i Get a Signal OK/Fine But i Can't Figure Out How To Get The PLAY BACK From My GH5 When i Push Play On The Monitor i Get a Pop That Says ( This Motion Image Can Not Be Played ) Whats Up With That Thanks for any Fix Thanks
great review Andy , I’ve just recently bought my GH5, any suggestions for a wide angle lens ? as seen @5.56 in your video ( w/s bridal group ) many thanks
Could someone help explain the gh5 waveform? I don't understand the line/dotted line layout in regards to IRE.. For example, how can I tell where say 50% or 65% IRE falls?
Excellent review - can you update it now the version 2.0 firmware is out? Also, you said we could see some of your video work on your website - did I miss that or did you take it down? Finally, I was looking at your instagram pictures. Is it me or do they seem a little under exposed? Perhaps the ND filter?? Anyway, I have seen many, many GH5 reviews and this is one of my all time favourites. I really like the fact that you get down to business right away and stay on track. You don't waste any of my time during the video. Thank you!
I have 2 questions. 1) Can i use focus magnifier while recording? 2) Focus Ring doesn't work constant. When i focus slowly - it focus not the same distance like if i do it fast. Can i fix it?
Thanks for this... Can you help me learn how to use focus for professional filming on Gh5? Do you use manual focus and if yes then how? A small video on the same would be really helpful.
Looks like a good camera but the autofocus and low light put me off abit,I'm using a a6300 at the minute and I'm looking to upgrade but unsure what to go to next
imsergioflores yes mate i got a a7s2,really happy with the quality of the picture, even the hd looks really good,,got it a few days ago,i shoot weddings for a living and now I've got a a7s2,a6300 and a canon c100m2
why some clips looks "smoother" then others? I mean some of them looks like at 60fps, but here on youtube the video is playing at 30fps. I'm seeing this effect in some places, in tv too! what shutter speed did you used for those wedding shots?
Great review - thanks - can I ask what profile you video your weddings in.
7 лет назад
With the sigma 18-35, do you need to tell the camera what zoom range you're using for every shot? Or does it recognize it automatically? Thanks in advance
With the updated Metabones firmware it just asks the focal length of the lens one time (the initial turn-on) and it remembers the setting and also automatically adapts to the changing of the zoom.
i love it, bought it, and thanks for the detailed review.....Andy how do i avoid the artifical lights flickering in the videos, is there a quick setting I need to adjust? thanks Patrick
Thanks for watching, Patrick. This might help you: eng-ca.faq.panasonic.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/42204/~/how-do-i-reduce-flickering-and-horizontal-stripes-on-images-in-creative-video
Nice and useful review.. What is the best way to edit in 24p while shooting 50p or 60p?? Im shooting also at higher frame rates for exactly the same reasons but, honestly, I never managed to get a smooth 24p or a 25p out of 50p footage.
60p will look sort of choppy on a 24p timeline if there are lots of vertical/horizontal movement across the screen. There's not really a way to make the choppiness look go away. Just try to minimize fast movement if you're shooting in 60p unless you plan to slow the footage down which in that case it will smooth out the playback on a 24p timeline like I show in my video.
Very cool! I also found video for weddings and birthday events. This video helped me big time. Thank you. Also, what kind of mounting rig do you use for your wedding video work?
Hi Andy, I want to buy a new Panasonic GH5 for make "Real Estate Video Walkthrough" using a Stabilizer, and I worry that the GH5 may have problems with the focus on this type of videos. ¿ Can I use the GH5 ( + Metabones adapter + Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Mount ), and keep a great focus while walk through the House or there are other better camera option in this price range for this type of videos ? Sorry for my english, I'm using google translator.
Hmm I don't own that lens, but I can say the GH5 paired with a Metabones Speedbooster is a great combo. However, for gimbal work, I love the combo of this lens geni.us/Lumix1235 paired with this gimbal geni.us/ZhiyunCrane. It's a simple, lightweight setup that works great for me.
Thank you for the great review! I'm in the middle of switching my gear from Canon to Panasonic. For use as a main zoom lens for wedding filmmaking, would you recommend Sigma 18-35+Speedbooster or Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8? Could you share your experiences with the two lenses, please? It's so hard to make the decision!
90% of my time filming weddings I’m using Speedbooster + Sigma 18-35. Really hard to beat that setup. Only con is it’s pretty heavy compared to the Panny 12-35. Worth it though.
Hey thanks for all the features you mentioned! Any chance you could speak on how to get a wedding business going? I know you typically have to shoot for cheaper at first (for friends/family) to begin with to build a reel for real clients. But I never understood if freelancing requires you to write off your own taxes when tax season comes and if you taxed your clients. Do you ask for a deposit once they agree to the wedding? Do they sign a contract to make it official once they've hired you? Then if you consider yourself a business/company do you have to get permits or licenses to be official or legit? It's really the business side that I don't get. I graduated with a degree in TV & Cinema arts but I've always been more of the videographer/editor who knew the technical side to the work and not business side. I'll be investing like 10-12k once I figure it out so I'd apprecaite if anyone can reply to this comment!
Disclaimer: I'm not a tax professional. But this is what I did to start off. Filmed my first ever wedding for a friend, free of charge. 2nd wedding for another friend (they gave me like $100). My first year I filmed 7 weddings and the most I made for one wedding was probably $500. 2nd year I started filming more for "strangers" or friends of friends, and I made up to $1000 per wedding. This year (my 3rd year) I'm filming weddings for an average of about $2000 per wedding. It's considered self-employment income for me and I pay quarterly taxes for it. When a client books me, they are required to make a $500 deposit to book the date, and we sign a contract. The rest of the money is due by the wedding date.
So I've been reading up on it and a lot of people say it's all based on your jurisdiction for what you need (license, tax ID, insurance, LLC, etc). Most people said to contact a lawyer if you're really serious about it. Anything over 400 I think I saw get's taxed and is no longer considered a "hobby" but now a business. Thank you for the quick and clear description. I'm really thinking to making it a business and so I was just curious about the legal concepts with it. Have any of your clients been outside friends or friends of friends/family members? If so, do you give them a contract to sign for copy right issues like editing your work? I'm guessing most people wouldn't complain or ask for paper work but I personally would be scared somebody messed with my work I provided (whether it be photo or videos). I'm also looking at it as a business though and more long term. Thanks for all the info once again! Have a great day Andy!
It's possible to get vignetting when you use certain lenses with a Speedbooster. It also depends on which Speedbooster you get (XL or Ultra). I use this one with my Sigma 18-35 and it works great: geni.us/SpeedboosterUltra. Read this helpful article: suggestionofmotion.com/blog/metabones-speed-booster-comparison-mft/
Excellent review - thank you. I'm seriously thinking of buying the GH5 (mainly for video use) but unsure about which lens to use. I plan only to have a single lens to cover all needs & I'm thinking of the 12 > 35 F2.8 constant aperture, but it's £400 more expensive than if I go for the kit lens. Do you think it's worth the money & do you have alternative recommendations? - thanks - Peter.
Thanks For the Video QUESTION Can You Explain How You Drop 60P Frames in To 24P Frames Time Line and you get it to Be Smooth Because My understanding is if you Put 60 p in a 24p the Footage Will Come Out Sturdy /Jerky ( i Have Done it on Acsedent and Video was really JERKY ) i Thought you Had to inprot / Video make your project the Same Frame Rate as what you Shot it At ? So i Would Love to Now what you are Talking About and How You Do it Thanks Possibly Make a Video on How To Thanks
I use Final Cut Pro X, and all I have to do is select the 60p clip in the timeline then go to the retiming options and choose "Automatic Speed" and it will automatically slow down the clip to fit 24p.
OK You Are Talking About Slow Motion Than i Thought You Were Talking About Normal Speed i Got You Now Because if you Drop 60p into a 24p Projeckt it Looks Jerky and Bad Thanks Man
Everyone, including you, is bragging on the image stabilization of the GH5. I have a problem with holding the camera still. It tends to wander all over the place. The stabilization does not seem to help with this. Can you give me any suggestions other than using a tripod?
great video mate! Question, I currently use Canon 80D with Sigma 18-35 art ( same as urs). Im considering on getting the GH5 to replace my 80D. Aside from the 4k 60fps, will I gain anything else from this tradeoff ? 80D has great autofocus, which is not something I use much often. Would you recommend this move ? Here is a link to one of the videos I made for youtube : ruclips.net/video/oJ1KsQ-Tq8M/видео.html I use mainly 2-3 kinds of shots , self portrait like urs, and gadget items/objects that I capture from close range, which lenses would you recommend to get the best Bokeh effect ? when I video shoot myself, I'm sitting about half a meter from the camera ( sigma 18-35 lens) any help on either question will be much appreciated. Thank !!

Outstanding review Andy. Answered all the questions I had about the GH5. Definitely looks like a great option.
Thanks, glad it helped! If you have any other questions about it feel free to reach out.
Absolutely stunning videography work. I bet that couple were over the moon with the footage that you captured for them too! Thanks for such a super informative video
Thanks for watching!
I just bought one myself. I love it! Awesome review as well, subscribed
Thanks Collin, enjoy your new GH5!
Just got the GH5 having used the Olympus EM5 mk2 for the last couple of years. I have to say your low light footage looks great, far better than what I've been used to. Thanks for a useful vid, appreciated.
Thanks. The Speedbooster geni.us/SpeedboosterUltra + Sigma geni.us/sigma1835 is a great combo for low-light

Amazing review! Very informative and easy to understand. Thanks!
Thanks!
Bought it now in the Pandemic era...-2020 :) Still an awesome camera.
Great video, I'm planning on buying the GH5 soon

I see this is a year old, so hopefully you've figured it out... but for anyone who stumbles across this and wonders: it's controlled with the round dial on the top left of your camera. With this dial, you can switch between single shot, burst mode, 6k burst, self-timer, etc.

Great video.enjoyed it a lot. I picked up my gh5 just the other day and loving it. Also had the gh4. And keeping it as my b camera
You need to use the customizable setting for auto focus for the type of scene you are shooting and it works perfectly.
Hi Andy. Thanks for your review. I am thinking of getting this camera.
Enjoy it!
at 12:35 I feel like you're reading my mind. haha. Good review. I'm jumping from a6500 to panasonic. Thanks Andy!!
Thanks for watching!
I don't see any ND-filters in your gearlist. Can you recommend any for an enthusiast like me?
Wow! Great footage!
thanks!
I’m vlogging now with GH5, thanks for the review
nice, hope you like it!
this was brilliantly useful - thanks a lot!
Thanks!
Concise and instructive review.
Thanks Bob
Can you crop in camera ? Effectively giving you something akin to a longer lens...? If so how much is the crop ?
I use Ex Teleconverter feature for this. www.newsshooter.com/2017/03/28/gh5-extra-tele-conversion/
I'm looking to buy two of these bad boys. few questions (for anyone using this camera during weddings):
1. how much space does a typical wedding gig take up on a drive? not sure how much hard drive space needed (for a year of weddings).
2. with the new firmeare coming out in the summer for 400 Mbps what's the ideal SD cards to purchase?
3. is it better to use one of the new OIS GH5 camera lenses (18-35mm) or is the Sigma+adapter more ideal? this is along with a Gimbal btw . Good review - all to the point .
Good information Andy.

Nope
Very, very good review. Thank you!

Is the low light performance better in GH5 compared to GH4?
Good review!
Thanks
Looks like a good camera but the autofocus and low light put me off abit,I'm using a a6300 at the minute and I'm looking to upgrade but unsure what to go to next
have you decided?

I'm usually following the double SS rule for video. So at 60fps my SS is usually 125.
Great review - thanks - can I ask what profile you video your weddings in.
With the sigma 18-35, do you need to tell the camera what zoom range you're using for every shot? Or does it recognize it automatically? Thanks in advance

Do you get good results without the speedboosters?
Yes this kit lists all my favorite native/MFT lenses for my GH5: geni.us/YTgear
Could you please tell me what SD card you use? Thank you!!
geni.us/VblT
What camera setup did you film this video with?
GH5 geni.us/GH5body + Speedbooster geni.us/SpeedboosterUltra + Sigma lens geni.us/sigma1835
What color profile did u use on those weddings shots? Skin tones look amazing :O
I always use Natural with all default 0’s
Great review! Im getting into wedding videography soon, what type of service do you provide when you go solo?
Usually 8-hour coverage + 5-minute highlight film with optional add-ons.
What's the recording limit?
GH5 has no recording limit. It will stop whenever one of these happens first: your memory card fills up or your battery dies.
Very cool! I also found video for weddings and birthday events. This video helped me big time. Thank you. Also, what kind of mounting rig do you use for your wedding video work?
Cool! I don’t use a rig. I’m just on a monopod most of the day.
Does gh5 has v-log in built or i need to buy it?

It works great. See 7:32 timestamp in the video. Best price for the Crane on Amazon: geni.us/ZhiyunCrane

Great video
Thanks
Hi Andy. Do you get vignetting with the GH5 and Speedbooster? If so how did you fix it?
It's possible to get vignetting when you use certain lenses with a Speedbooster. It also depends on which Speedbooster you get (XL or Ultra). I use this one with my Sigma 18-35 and it works great: geni.us/SpeedboosterUltra. Read this helpful article: suggestionofmotion.com/blog/metabones-speed-booster-comparison-mft/
Ah that makes more sense Andy Slye, i got the XL when i should have got the Ultra. Wish i had found that article earlier! Thanks for the reply
If you can only have one lens to start with, yes I absolutely recommend the 12-35 Lumix OIS lens: geni.us/Lumix1235
Hey Andy,
Thanks for doing this video. I was wondering what memory cards do you recommend using with the 4K 150 60p?
I use these and they work great geni.us/VblT

Pentru evenimente pe timp de zi e ok dar in "low light situation" il bagi in plasa. :)
OK You Are Talking About Slow Motion Than i Thought You Were Talking About Normal Speed i Got You Now Because if you Drop 60p into a 24p Projeckt it Looks Jerky and Bad Thanks Man
did u use a Metabone ?
Yes. Here's a list of all my video gear: geni.us/YTgear
I am using 12-35 f 2.8 ..! Lens

Do you use the GH5 with any stabalization devices such as Ronin M?
I use this geni.us/ZhiyunCrane
Everyone, including you, is bragging on the image stabilization of the GH5. I have a problem with holding the camera still. It tends to wander all over the place. The stabilization does not seem to help with this. Can you give me any suggestions other than using a tripod?
Are you using a Lumix lens with OIS?
Using two Panasonic lenses. The 12-60mm with power ios and the 8-18mm that does not have it.
those bride maids are dime pieces.. Sheesh!
U can buy a Gh4 for 939 euro in The Netherlands :O
It's a great price on Amazon too: geni.us/PanaGH4
great video mate!
Question, I currently use Canon 80D with Sigma 18-35 art ( same as urs).
Im considering on getting the GH5 to replace my 80D. Aside from the 4k 60fps, will I gain
anything else from this tradeoff ? 80D has great autofocus, which is not something I use much often.
Would you recommend this move ?
Here is a link to one of the videos I made for youtube : ruclips.net/video/oJ1KsQ-Tq8M/видео.html
I use mainly 2-3 kinds of shots , self portrait like urs, and gadget items/objects that I capture from close range, which lenses would you recommend to get the best Bokeh effect ?
when I video shoot myself, I'm sitting about half a meter from the camera ( sigma 18-35 lens)
any help on either question will be much appreciated.
Thank !!
GH5 has half the battery life from gh4 imo.
GH5 will eat up more battery if IBIS is enabled. If not it gets similar battery life to the GH4, from my experience at least.
i Agree.. the ibis is a real bettery slayer.
Nigga........are u wearing makeup lmaoooo??????????????????
