absolute best (and cheapest card) you can get for the GH5 - amzn.to/2s8849U - this will handle 400mbps like a breeze. Purchased them when they were 100 each and now you can buy for 50 bucks!!
Anyone interested in the GH5, but is worried about the lack of great continuous AF, please know that there is a super awesome hack to make the AF twice as good. All it takes is a simple setting change (shutter speed) and it does wonders. There are several videos out there explaining exactly what to do. Check out Yeowda Yeo's video first as he was the genius that figured it out in the first place. Not an engineer at Panasonic. Hopefully Panasonic recognizes him for his discovery, but until then, give the dude props and credit well deserved.
LOL, for a camera with a price tag of over 2K it is not too much to ask....kind of like the the same issue with the Canon 6D2, people expect it to have 15 stops of dynamic range...but yet the camera is a image beast in its own ways. It would not be an issue if you know how to expose properly.
Not all of us are. There are TONS of RUclipsrs, vloggers that this camera fits sooooo perfectly with except for its unbelievable lack of AF reliability. There are sooo many other cheaper options with MUCH better AF, that this to me personally don't make any sense what so ever.
Excellent review. Best out there. /I don't have issues with the AF. I'll live pulling focus as I have for 20 years. Am I not a filmmaker now? :-) /Yes I do like AF sometimes for run and gun, but for narrative, commercial or considered work? No. /Am I the only one on earth not vlogging, or watching vlogs? Perhaps.
Wait for their new camera that they had covered at NAB. Looks like a S35 sensor in an AF100 type body. I want to get a gh5 but with my clients they are the type to question what I bring to shoot which sucks. I brought my Arri Amira to shoot a marvel commercial( just a talking head of agent Hill) and they questioned that. Same thing happened on an HBO 24/7 boxing shoot.
Just like the old days with still shooters and Hasselblad. Idiots that didn't know photography would insist on seeing a Hasselblad- like the camera did all the work. It reminds me of an old joke. A photographer is showing his work to a friend who proclaims, "Wow! These are great pictures! You must have a great camera!" A week later the photographer is having dinner at said friend's house. Upon leaving, he exclaims, "That was an amazing dinner. You must have a terrific oven!"
Was talking with a friend about something similar a couple weeks back, but with regards to photography....people question a small camera, but when you walk into a room with a Canon / Nikon full frame DSLR no one will question your gear.
Gotta say, I am absolutely uninterested in this camera. But your style is awesome and I couldn't stop watching the video. Admire your talent. Keep it going!
Hi i'm a new subscriber, really like your videos ...but some constructive criticism, your choice of music is to say the least strange and irritating making me fast forward your video montages, example, the montage with the child on the play ground was beautifully shot ..but the music was grimy and gritty!!, how much better it would have been to compliment the innocence and the warmth of that video with like music.......Contributed
The Panasonic gh series are also great for real estate photography. A friend of mine uses it for his real estate business. He shooted with other camera's but always got back to the gh series. Whole pictures are sharp not only parts. Even the GH 3 is great.
very excellent video... thank you so much for detailed information... please suggest a weatherproof lens under 1000 dollars for this camera best suited for portraits, street photography and 4k video.
Panasonic GH5 with 12 to 60mm LIECA DG Lens Kit - Can you do a video with this setup only (Kit setup) with video samples and images. Planning to buy one?
Nice video......but...you say the 10bit video causes your editing machine to crash! That's not an issue with the GH5, it's an issue with your editing machine! And you say 'they' will do an update? Final cut or premiere?
I have an issue with my GH5 I think. Whenever I use a microphone, sometimes there will be these weird glitch sounds in the audio. It happens at random and I don’t know what I can do to fix it. Nowhere online has any answers, and I couldn’t find any videos on this either. Do you know what I’m doing wrong? Thanks.
Hey mate. Im going to be starting my own channel soon about the awesome, rare, endangered, cute, deadly or just plain weird we have over hear in Australia. I think I'm going to be using the panasonic gh5 with a 14-140mm lens. What microphone do you recommend and do you recommend i use the 12-60mm lens instead?
it's funny because shooting Vlog before and after is kind of the wrong comparison. I mean if you shot Cinelike D compared to VLog without grading CinelikeD wins. I mean you can't use Vlog straight out of the camera right? So basically Vlog before can't be compared to anything that you would use right?
I just shot a music video with the gh5 and a bunch of shots where on a steady cam using auto focus. It performed perfectly. Couldn't be happier with the cameras performence. I'm not really sure why people are complaining. All we had to do was select our subject and shoot
AF is for people who cannot pull focus, and really if AF is such a thing just do the firmware update on the camera and you will have AF the same as a Panasonic P2..... But AF ?? Really ??
Hi, another beginner-learner's question. Should I purchase white and middle-grey cards in order to aid setting white balance before shooting? How does manual WB work on the GH5? Also, is it worth also getting a black card, as well as the white and middle-grey, and why? Anything else worth considering?
Supermandan yes a set of white balance cards are useful. Again, not familiar with avid, but most editors have a option to just click on the white color and set the balance in post. You can also use the cards to set custom white balances (up to 4 custom white balances) in addition to your pre-set ones. I personally don’t use white balance cards too much unless I’m shooting with a multi cam set up.
what settings did you use for your photos? I've searched around for what people are using for photo settings and all i can find is everyone talking about is being able to pull from the 6k.. which is 18mp.. how do you access the 20mp? cause i thought your images were good!
One Of The Stupid Thing / Trends That Manufactures Started Doing Was thinking Smaller is Better Trying to Cram a Tun of SH.T in a Little Body Same with Computer to ( APPLE ) i don't Care if it is Bigger as long as it performs good
FRANK R ICE COLD your comment is ridiculous. OF COURSE smaller is better. In fact it's the reason why the camera industry is declining. Why would an ordinary person even buy a camera when they can do everything (even manual focus and focus peaking) on a smartphone? Cameras don't even have voice trigger, lol. Japanese companies (not only camera companies) are way behind the times. It is proven that the one thing customers care about is convenience. Japanese companies make great hardware but shitty software so the usability suffer a lot. Not to mention their pride/corporate culture mean unpopular, proprietary closed down system. At this rate many of them will disappear in the next 20 years They will have to improve their software FAST and even cooperate with other companies to survive.
so thats why the (semi-Pro and Pro-) filmmakers all turn to iPhone X and Samsung 8/9/... now? I sincerel doubt it... Sometimes "bigger" and "heavier" IS better IMO... handheld-shots, overheating (= worse quality)...
Do you like the a6500? I'm going to grab a GH5, but I also want to grab a Sony camera with a bigger sensor and better low light performance. I'm trying to decide if the extra money for the a7sii is worth it. I know the a6500 takes better stills, but it has more/smaller pixels so it's not quite as much of a low light beast as the a7sii. Have you had over heating problems or problems with battery life? I really like the images from the a6500 for the price. Both the video and the stills are beautiful. I'm trying to talk myself out of going with the a7sii. I don't really want to spend that much money on a second camera. Have you enjoyed using your a6500?
Breaking Elegance I know the a7rii is really killer for stills. I'm not much of a stills shooter though. Don't get me wrong, I like shooting stills, but it's just a hobby for me. Video is my bread and butter. I prefer the video features of the s line. To me it seems like the a6500 is the best of both worlds for less money though. I've been trying to find people who own it to get their opinion on it. I'm definitely leaning that way. I could afford the a7sii, but if I save the money I could get some nice glass instead. If I talk to a few a6500 owners who like it I'll be convinced.
Andrew Forbes my friend has the a7S2 and the A7R2 I personally only shoot video specifically for my RUclips channel I barely ever shoot any Stills I still prefer the a7rII check out that1cameraguy' and Jason vong for good sony camera coverage those guys know everything sony
Can anyone help? If you use one of your own custom settings, and yet in the moment you need to change one variable, then: a) can you do this?, and b) when you later return to that one custom setting, will it revert to all of your original choices? In other words, is there flexibility in the moment, while later stability to always return to something you have pre-arranged?
Supermandan good question. You can move to one of your pre-set custom settings. Once there it will be set to what you set it at prior. You can adjust anything you want freely. When you got out of that custom setting and back in, it will go back to the original settings you have it set to. So yes, you have flexibility in the moment, while later when you go back it will be your original settings. Hope that made sense
gh5 is a real filmtool. no overheatingproblems, non stop filming, good batterylife, 10 bit 4.2.2 intern, headset connection, rolling shutter is okay. All this the a6500 does not have. But imagequality in low light is better and so is the autofocus of the a6500. But for the rest gh5 winns easily.
all this talk of poor af performance being a deal breaker is odd to me. Why wouldn't you just pull yourself? If you know how to pull focus well, that's literally a high paid spot on a production (1st AC). Get a metabones speedbooster with this camera, and some canon glass that is not focus by wire, and you should be just fine focusing yourself. Also, with good canon glass over this sensor, your footage won't look as 'plastic-y' and just be better overall.
SD cards are way too flimsy and can easily be damaged, especially the exposed pins. I would have preferred CF cards as they are extremely durable but I suppose they are too large.
Neat video! Is there a way to lock the shutter speed in movie mode eg at 1/50th for filming at 25fps. So that no fiddling or big clumsy fingers can accidentally switch it to 1/40th or 1/60th ! Thanks
The videos at the end doesn't seem so bad at low light. Some light noise removal in Premiere, FCPX, etc can fix this too, wouldn't be perfect but it's also not a big deal. All other complaints can be updated in future firmware updates.
Terrific review, I have been waiting a while to let the dust settle and your vid has got me back in love with the GH5 , since it's now past 24 April "The Firmware" day have you got some footage of the 4.2.2 -10 upgrade ? I will def get the Vlog when I hit the buy button ...any news on the crashing fix would be welcome . Top job mate ..thumbs up
In documentary film shoot situations where the subject is constantly on the move and beyond the scope of manual focus because of the time factor, autofocus inevitably gains importance for even the pro. Other exemplary features of a camera cannot replace the essential requirement of good effective autofocusing.
Good review! Slowly leaning towards this camera. Looking to shoot quality videos and photos. I do work in the video industry and understand resolutions, bit rates etc. I can maximize the cameras potential. 4K 60p is a killer feature to have. But All the talk about the auto focus issue does concern me. Hope a system update can partially fix this...
Ok looks like you've had this a few months now. It seems like a great entry level 4K camera without buying a cinema camera BUT those of us with Canon lenses want to know if we need to buy another pile of lenses or use some sort of metabones adapter etc. Also how do find the post flow. Do you transcode everything prior to editing?
Hey great review! I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your Premiere Pro Export settings. Your video shows almost no obvious compression. I've been struggling for a while now with mine. My footage always looks way worse when uploaded to RUclips and shows tons of artifacts/distortion. I've tried every setting possible and no changes. I do h264 and I've tried everything from 12mbps to 50mbps with no change. Thanks for the future help!
hey, are there any thoughts on making photos with this body? how fast you can swap to photo mode from video? would it keep the setti g that you ise in your current video shot or it changes like sony does? thanks!
Leaving aside the fact of being masters or inept in using manual focus, the technology is so consolidated and tested with amazing results in an endless number of cameras. In this case, what I can think of is a not perfect process of product development and testing. In my opinion, after years of shooting videos in all conditions, there are situations I prefer to focus manually and others in which I prefer the camera do the job. In this case I have to care of one less thing and pay attention to the scene. But there is a good video by Gerald Undone that gives a lot of information on the AF and how to get better results from the GH5.
Things that stood out for me most: There were scenes, particularly of the toddler on the playground where the camera was simply never in focus. I'm assuming auto focus was used there, but it never focused on any part of the scene. The image stablisation caused moving objects to ghost in and out of existence. A bird ran into the scene, turned, and instead of running away, just faded into nothingness (10:55). Also multiple times between 11:00 and 11:30, traffic moving along the road jolted from spot to spot, more like watching a time lapse than a video. Granted this was not the focus of the scene, but if you're shooting wildlife and background items are appearing and disappearing, teleporting from one location to the next.. not a good look.
Great review! Thank you for taking the time to put it together for us. Reviews like these help me try to make much more informed choices while researching new gear. Again, thank you. I will subscribe.
Thanks for the review, mate! Excellent work! Would love to hear your experience of how the camera handles low light conditions similar to that of a night club.
Great review Mr! Best one I've seen so far! The autofocus bit doesn't bother so much as I tend to use manual anyway, but a working autofocus one would be a welcomed addition. However my Gh4 is pretty bad in low light, so I was really hoping for an improvement there! Keep up the good work!
Some questions about the FOCUS PULL feature: - Does it work smoothly and well with Olympus 12-40/2.8 - Can you remote control it with the Panasonic app?
Thanks for your excellent video, as a hobby filmer i‘m looking for a new device this year and came across the gh5, think it‘s worth the money - if you want to spend that amount of bucks on a cam. Did a firmware update solve ‚problems‘ with the AF yet?

We are filmmakers, we don't care about AF
that`s the real deal! poor ignorant rich-lazy kids want everything made for them this days!

Not really. Just get better at manual focus.
RAW FILM Studio Filmowe you mean you shoot on film . ?
Not all of us are. There are TONS of RUclipsrs, vloggers that this camera fits sooooo perfectly with except for its unbelievable lack of AF reliability. There are sooo many other cheaper options with MUCH better AF, that this to me personally don't make any sense what so ever.
I'm a little late to the party but, great review. Kept me interested the entire time. Really like what I see from this camera.
Excellent review. Best out there.

Don't you need a good AF if you are running it on a glidecam or gimbal , what would you do in those situations?
I vlog and I still would keep it on manual focus and just use the touchscreen to focus
Clear and useful presentation of the GH5, thank you!
Can you upload a video in 4k 60p so we can see the quality? Thanks and great review
Gotta say, I am absolutely uninterested in this camera. But your style is awesome and I couldn't stop watching the video. Admire your talent. Keep it going!
Toby Briggs haha cool man! I appreciate it!
Great review and one of the most in-depth I've seen to date...thank you.
Thank you for the time stamp facility, enabling me to look at what features are of most interest. Much appreciated. I have subscribed.
Awesome and an excellent review. Probably, one of the best that I have seen.
Thanks! Still rocking 3 of them till this day! Probably won’t upgrade until I see the phase detect auto focus system in Panasonics micro 4/3rds.
Love this! Thanks so much
this camera looks so good!!!
why the fck give a point doing collor grading : that picture style TO MUTCH FLAT / Collor graded still flat and muddy ...

Panasonic GH5 with 12 to 60mm LIECA DG Lens Kit - Can you do a video with this setup only (Kit setup) with video samples and images. Planning to buy one?
somebody had gone deep into this. good review!
Hey, great Review!
Would you tell what's the music playing at 10:25?
For what I use it for the af works well
Oval Banger Videos AND there is a update coming later this month that says it has improved auto continuous focus!!! Hopefully they got it right :))
JRESHOW yes looking forward to the update. Your video is spot on! Thanks for uploading.
Gah, you mean "internal" not "eternal" recording...
indeed
I played that back so many times. I was like what are they trying to say
Thank you
Great review, love the clips and music combo........ Glad to see there is more to this camera than the dreaded auto focus....
Sam Hawk thank you! There is.
to be honest I don't think the video quality look that great for the price of it
Nice video......but...you say the 10bit video causes your editing machine to crash!
Fauna & Flora TY!
The video on the trees are is a big crap: It's jumping all the time at the tree logs: Why? Don't they say it's the best for video? Where is that best?
Great video... very neat... clean and clear! I really appreciated it.
I hesitate with SONY ALPHA 7s - II... you kind of helped me choose.
H.256 is a pain. It doesnt open on Final Cut Pro X. But it only opens on Premiere Pro for me :/
EightOfSupreme stop using pirated versions

Nice overview.
I'm curious why you went for square photos at around 22:34. Just an aesthetic choice, or needed?
Very informative video on the GH5’s features.
Your B-roll locations look familiar. did you shoot it in Davenport, Iowa? I'm based in Des Moines and shoot weddings on a GH4 :)
Davis Evans yep! Davenport, Buffalo, Bluegrass, all over the QC! Small world!
cool ! congratulations ! You have left the sensor stabilization ?
Can't decide what to grab.. Panasonic Gh5 or Sonya 6500 😰

barandcross good question, and I'm not sure, but I don't believe so.
If you use shutter angle instead of shutter speed I think that would do it.
barandcross good point! I just checked and you can indeed set the dials and wheels to something else besides shutter ISO etc. lots of options
Really enjoyed this. Must have taken quite a bit of time to pull together. Thank you.
Toy Hunting Gamers thank you!
I’m actually confused. Why do you need a gimble if gh5 has it built in? If you’re using gimble then isn’t the gh5 stabilisation redundant?
This is the most helpful video about GH5 that I've seen. Thanks for sharing!
The videos at the end doesn't seem so bad at low light. Some light noise removal in Premiere, FCPX, etc can fix this too, wouldn't be perfect but it's also not a big deal. All other complaints can be updated in future firmware updates.
Great review. I'm about to buy GH5. Please, tell me what's are settings to night scenes at the of your video? What lense?
WOW QUALITY TOTAL SHIT! GLAD I FIRST SAW THIS BEFORE I'VE BOUGHT. I'VE GOT REAL CAMERA- NX1.
Tomas Av. Nx1 is for tourists
Excellent video! Very well done and informative! Thanks!
Scott Pendleton thanks Scott! Very much appreciated!
what font is that you used @ 20:00? also very well done, Subd.

Is the dynamic range in 8 bit better or worse then the GH4? I am hearing it possibly has worse dynamic range?
Hi ! Have you test the GH5 after the firmware update ? Did they solved the autofocus problem ? Thank's !
Best and most unbiased review of the gh5 I've seen yet. 👍😇
Awesome review! By the way: where did they announce that they bring 4k60p 10 bit to the internal recording? I can't find that anywhere...
Peter van der Ham it's not true. I misunderstood. Sorry for the confusion
I am good for 1 commercial per video. Out.
hey, are there any thoughts on making photos with this body? how fast you can swap to photo mode from video? would it keep the setti g that you ise in your current video shot or it changes like sony does?
Thank you man you're professional
Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 or the Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8
Which would you prefer and why? 😊
Things that stood out for me most:
There were scenes, particularly of the toddler on the playground where the camera was simply never in focus.
Thanks, this is a very useful video. I'm pretty sure now I'm going to replace my excellent GH3 with this astounding camera.
Great review! Thank you for taking the time to put it together for us. Reviews like these help me try to make much more informed choices while researching new gear. Again, thank you. I will subscribe.
Lovely balanced review. Loved it.. Need a video camera for my trips..Have to make my choice soon.. Sony or Panasonic.
Keep up the good work!
oddbjørn austevik foto. Thank you so much!
Nice review mate ! 13:23 what name of software or plugin is ? many thnx and good luck with your channel
Super report. I'll look forward to your next one after a firmware update, but it's an awesome camera. Thank you.
instasub. Brilliant review. The IQ is absurd.
dudemanismadcool thanks :)
Great job with this review!
T. Frank TY!
Panasonic ows you money because after this video, I'm buying it...Period...
Some questions about the FOCUS PULL feature:
- Does it work smoothly and well with Olympus 12-40/2.8
- Can you remote control it with the Panasonic app?
I gave up on this video because of the relentless beat noise. It's so distracting and completely unnesessary!
Thank you for this review. After my 70D stopped working... I am metaphorically drooling right now.
causbury haha! Sorry about you're camera:/
Great review! What's the song during the baby montage?
but why did u choose it over Sony for example or even a red, is it only because of the money or for other reasons as well!
Saw the Iowa flag... is that Davenport? The footage has a few dropped frames, is that in the original?
Thanks for your excellent video, as a hobby filmer i‘m looking for a new device this year and came across the gh5, think it‘s worth the money - if you want to spend that amount of bucks on a cam. Did a firmware update solve ‚problems‘ with the AF yet?
Is that flickering during the stabilization shots from RUclips, or is it in your originals too?
May be a new fan bcuz of this vid
Should I get a Sony A7S II??
So will they make new camera as an upgrade or update to fix that af
