As well as using the Olympus 12mm and 45mm lenses, I also use all my Canon glass with the GH5. However, you will need an adapter. By far the best is the Metabones Speedbooster. Check it out here: www.all-things-photography.com/blog/metabones-speedbooster-ef-m43-mount/
It all depends what you want from the footage. If you want smooth movement, the faster the frame rate the better. 50/60fps up to 100/120fps would look super smooth. Keep the shutter speed at generally twice the frame rate where possible. I.e. 50fps = 100th/sec, 100fps = 200th/sec If you want to pull sharp stills from fast moving objects, use a fast shutter speed. I.e. 1000th/sec for a frame rate of 100fps. ...adjust aperture and ISO accordingly.
Nick Stubbs Thank you so much Nick for your valuable advice. I'm filming 4K 60fps shutter speed 180d and sometimes my footage still looks judder or choppy . Any idea why ?
Nick Stubbs Nick ! For example this video 60fps ruclips.net/video/de9j5pFeCB8/видео.html but it still looks chopping not smooth. How to make it smoother ?
By the way the manual on my G85 says that when in AFF and the camera cannot get focus it automatically changes to AFS - so AFF is the best setting unless you videoing fast moving objects then use AFC
I love my G9 a lot except for the slow Auto focus..it ruins sometimes my video footage..just wonder why Panasonic didn't fix this problem with firmware update..annoying. Thanks for the video mate, excellent!

Thanks, I haven't really thought about it Sai. I use the camera a lot but always on manual focus. I would only use auto if I were using the Ronin stabiliser.
Nick Stubbs absolutely I’m on manual 99% of the time, I’m just looking into some interview ideas for camera 2 for documentary and I work alone, so I’m having to finally use AF after owning GH5s for years! Hate the idea of trusting automation but there’s no other way, I can’t do everything myself. If it was canon I’d have no worries! Thanks for your help.
@@SaiKelly Sure...I was going to mention Canon. If only Panny would catch up in that regard. The only other thing I can think of is to use the app on your phone or tablet and tap to focus when required?
Nick Stubbs Well I’m looking at trying to set up a system that’s fully automated as I’m the interviewer also. I’ve a plan here I’m trying out auto focus was just my last hurdle! Cheers for the tips.
Hi, Can you post a high-res portrait shoot with 12-60mm kit Lens with the GH5. Planning to buy one!! Also if you could give the Raw file and JPEG for comparisons.
It does work pretty well...just a little slow for some folks I guess... for example... when it needed to focus back onto your face at the very end... it took about 2 or 3 seconds I think? This is not a deal breaker in my opinion. Thanks for the video, and your take on AF settings. I found it to be very helpful as a new GH5 owner!
I do a lot of top down shooting demos where the camera is about 3 feet away from the table. Will these settings work well where the objects I am demonstrating may be moving in and out of the focus plane quickly (I obviously haven't tried them yet)? Other suggestions? Thanks.
To be honest, I wouldn't use auto focus in that situation with any camera. As an observer, it annoys me to see focus hunting on product videos. I would work out and establish the area that will be in focus using a smaller, fixed aperture and keep the product in that range. Use a depth of field calculator to establish that range. If you wanted the occasional, hero shot with shallow depth of field, take it separately and drop it in as b roll as you speak.
@@NickStubbs Just tried your settings with a demonstration of knot tying and it worked the best of all the settings I've tried so far. I understand what you are saying about not using AF in this case, but it's hard for me to stay in the focal plane because of all the movement. Still experimenting.
Hi Nick, thank's for your great video, I don't know if you can help me with the following: How can I setup the focus to infinity in a Lumix GH5 + Metabones SpeedBooster + Tokina 11-16mm. I need to get everything in focus at the same time, is for a Real Estate video Walk-through using a Zhiyun crane v2 Gimbal Stabilizer. Excuse me if this is a too basic question. Thanks in advance.
Read up on hyperfocal distance. Don't focus manually on the farthest object in view, find somewhere in between based on the science here: www.all-things-photography.com/hyperfocal-distance/
Can you explain exactly which setting you mean in the menu please. Also, are you set to M(video) on the top dial with rear focus switch set to either of the AF settings and the lens set to AF?
Hello, Im kind of struggling with the AFC settings. Does the in-menu setting have somethink to do with the lever hardware button above the screen? For example I have got the continuous AF ON in the menu BUT I have the lever on AFS/AFF function. However I sometimes have the feeling that the camera is focusing automatically without hitting the shutter button. Is that normal? Dont I have to set the lever on AFC in order to activate the actual continuous autofocusing? Im planning to use the camera with ronin in future so Id like to understand the focusing system right. THX!
Hi Geoff, to be honest, I'm not sure. I have the GH5 locked down for filming tutorials mostly these days so I use manual focus. If you find more info on this, please let me know : )
Hi Nick, It works well. So far, I've only tested on stationary shots, I'll have to test with moving objects to see how that works. But, so far, so good. Are you still flying the colors?
Great video I'm going to try and adjust these setting on my gh5. I tent to film in Manual focus. But would like to try these auto focus settings. When I go back and switch to manual focus on the lens and on the camera. Will my manual focus be difference or altered because of these auto focus settings? Or will manual focus remain the exact same as normal? Thanks cheers
Hi, I want to buy a new Panasonic GH5 for make "Real Estate Video Walkthrough" using a Stabilizer, and I worry that the GH5 may have problems with the focus on this type of videos. ¿ Can I use the GH5 and keep a great focus while walk through the House or there are other better camera option in this price range for this type of videos ? Sorry for my english, I'm using google translator.
If you go to 2m 18s on this video: ruclips.net/video/oo1lGgi216k/видео.html ...you will see various walk-through's with the GH5. I think it does a brilliant job if set up correctly. Obviously there are other, smaller cameras like the Sony A6500 that could do the job, or the Canon 80D/5D Mark IV with their excellent dual pixel autofocus but it depends on what else you want the camera for and your budget. Hope that helps...
Hi Greg, nothing. The AF assist lamp is only activated when you press the shutter button. This method doesn't need that and simply uses the selected AF area.
It depends on the speed of movement but in my experience, if you are not careful to move with the subject and/or if it is too sporadic in its movement, the GH5 will tend to "hunt" and lose focus now and again. If you are on a simple, slowish pan whilst tracking a moving subject it is ok but for simple shots like that, I would recommend manual focus anyway.
I'm not sure Tommy. According to the Panny firmware page, the new features (near shift and far shift) only allow you to prioritise either near or far subjects. They say nothing about autofocus quality etc... www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh5_firmware.html
NicK you got one more subscriber. Best settings For GH5. I have been using GH5 from long time with all other different settings but trust me you won. :)
I tried following your instructions but when I pressed the Fn3 button no menu came up like you showed. I have the GH5 with the Olympus M Zuiko 12 - 40 mm f2.8 Pro. But I have problems focusing with the 12mm focal length. I can get a sharp focus at 12mm when the subject is close to the lens ~ 1 ft or .5 - 1.0 meters but when I get more distant like 7 ft I cannot get a sharp focus at 12mm. The focus wants to be all the way to infinity but it is not sharp whether I focus closer or not - even if I line up the red focus line in the middle of the infinity symbol. However if I focus at infinity and zoom in just a little to 14mm everything is very sharp. I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have the GH5 set on Movie mode and manual focus. The firmware in GH5 and Olympus is up to date. Why would I not be able to get sharp focus at around 7 ft at 12mm but get sharp focus closer or with zoom out to 14mm? I have tried focusing with the focus ring slide back (linear focus like your said) and toward me (wire focus) but nothing is sharp at 12mm at a distance. Close up is fine. When I increase the f stop at 12mm it gets a bit sharper than 2.8 - 3.2 but not really sharp. I would really appreciate any help with this. It is driving me crazy and I have spent hours and hours watching videos and experimenting to try to figure this out.

As well as using the Olympus 12mm and 45mm lenses, I also use all my Canon glass with the GH5. However, you will need an adapter. By far the best is the Metabones Speedbooster. Check it out here: www.all-things-photography.com/blog/metabones-speedbooster-ef-m43-mount/
Nick please tell me ! I'm filming fast moving fighter jets. Which video settings will be the best ? Shutter speed, fps etc . Thank you
It all depends what you want from the footage. If you want smooth movement, the faster the frame rate the better. 50/60fps up to 100/120fps would look super smooth. Keep the shutter speed at generally twice the frame rate where possible.
I.e. 50fps = 100th/sec, 100fps = 200th/sec
If you want to pull sharp stills from fast moving objects, use a fast shutter speed.
Thank you for this. I'm still unconvinced about the speed of the AF adjustment between near and far, am I being unreasonable?
I agree, and I just bought one... hmmmm.
The function button doesnt bring up the c1 thing you have in the video, i lose you after that
I love my G9 a lot except for the slow Auto focus..it ruins sometimes my video footage..just wonder why Panasonic didn't fix this problem with firmware update..annoying. Thanks for the video mate, excellent!
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Yes, Panny aren't great at autofocus but I have an S1H arriving on Friday for review. Will be interesting to see how that works with AF!
Just gave this a go! Works great thanks!
You're welcome!
What setting do you have it on the right spindle thing? Manual or custom 1??? When u do all this ?
Manual (video)
Why this not working on FHD 8bits ?😅
Who knows!
I can't enter my AF custom settings anymore. The camera can't autofocus anymore. What do I need to change? My focus mode is fixed on 'MF' and i don't know where to change this back to AF. Can you help me out? I can't use my GH5 at all now anymore, big problem...
Might sound silly but have you checked a) the focus switch on the rear is set to autofocus and b) the lens itself is set to autofocus (some lenses need to be pushed or pulled out)?
@@NickStubbs ahh the focus ring. That one has gotten the best of me a few times when I couldn't figure out why in the world I couldn't get it back in auto 😆
@@ScottGerke LOL...me too, that's why it sprang to mind when I saw this question 😅
@@ScottGerke By the way "Power of a simple hello"...superb video, great lifestyle, subbed 👍
@@NickStubbs Glad you enjoy! It was a move during the pandemic thanks to loosing my work as a DJ at the moment. I also knew loneliness was going to be the next pandemic, so why not share with the world the power of a simple hello. I was once in a funk and know what it's like to feel like crap up in the brain region. It’s be an incredible experience.
Hi. Great video, but do you not need to use VFR for 48 fps, and there is no autofocus with VFR?
Great job man thanks. Any update on your thoughts here or same-same?
Very nice work Nick. I just got my own Gh5, so I have shifted from DV/HD camcorders to DLSR. :)
Shark Thanks for the kind feedback...what's a pro channel?
Thank you 🙏🏻
You're welcome 👍
Hi, Can you post a high-res portrait shoot with 12-60mm kit Lens with the GH5. Planning to buy one!! Also if you could give the Raw file and JPEG for comparisons.
I still got problem with AF at 60fps I got MF only..how to change that on AF??
Thanks so much! Now I can finally take mine out of the box (got it three weeks ago) and get to work because the AF was so intimidating to me.
Excellent...have fun!
It does work pretty well...just a little slow for some folks I guess... for example... when it needed to focus back onto your face at the very end... it took about 2 or 3 seconds I think? This is not a deal breaker in my opinion. Thanks for the video, and your take on AF settings. I found it to be very helpful as a new GH5 owner!
carljw316smp Thanks for your feedback Carl, much appreciated.
@@jeffm9227 Nice one, keep playing and you'll find you end up with a bunch of different settings that work for each environment 👍
Good one Nick 👍🏻
Cheers iSpike ✌️
My very first setting is greyed out & OFF!! Should I reset & start again?
Can you explain exactly which setting you mean in the menu please. Also, are you set to M(video) on the top dial with rear focus switch set to either of the AF settings and the lens set to AF?
@@NickStubbs It is now!! All ok thanks
Great stuff 👍
Would setting the gx9 give the same results or would it differ, if so, in what way?
How is the auto focus I'm 1080p
I haven't tried as I always shoot in 4k but I imagine it's the same 👍
Hello, Im kind of struggling with the AFC settings. THX!
Any idea if this would work on the G85/80?????
uplift20 Not sure, sorry. Maybe pop to a local store to give it a go unless you have one yourself?
I use the gh5 with sigma 18 - 35 and it hunts loads using your settings. 🙈🙈
Have you tried slowing down the AF Speed and sensitivity? That may help.
Perfect, this worked great on my g90! are you in weymouth by any chance?
Good to hear Chris and thanks for commenting...and yes, I'm in Weymouth 👍

Hi Nick, does this change as we’re now 2020 and there’s been a couple of firmware updates since? Geoff
Hi Geoff, to be honest, I'm not sure. I have the GH5 locked down for filming tutorials mostly these days so I use manual focus. If you find more info on this, please let me know : )
@@NickStubbs Thanks Nick.Hope your keeping well. Geoff
@@geoffhodgson2492 All good here thanks, hope you are too.
Hi Nick,
It works well. So far, I've only tested on stationary shots, I'll have to test with moving objects to see how that works. But, so far, so good. Are you still flying the colors?
Nice one, good to hear and yes, I'm still using the GH5 along with the S1H 👍
Thanks for sharing definitely help me out Leaps and Bounds works well thank you very much sir look forward to the next video..
Great video. Really useful thanks.
You're welcome...and thanks.
Nick - what is the AF assist lamp actually doing to assist with autofocus in your settings?
Hi Greg, nothing. The AF assist lamp is only activated when you press the shutter button. This method doesn't need that and simply uses the selected AF area.
Will this be good enough to track a moving subject?
It depends on the speed of movement but in my experience, if you are not careful to move with the subject and/or if it is too sporadic in its movement, the GH5 will tend to "hunt" and lose focus now and again. If you are on a simple, slowish pan whilst tracking a moving subject it is ok but for simple shots like that, I would recommend manual focus anyway.
Game changer, thanks!
You're welcome Mark 👍
When I press Fn3 nothing happens :(
same!!!! how do we get f3 to work?!!?
It’s possible you had variable frame rate on and that won’t let you set up with f3
Thanks for the video. Are these settings still the best after the new firmware updates of November 2019?
I'm not sure Tommy. According to the Panny firmware page, the new features (near shift and far shift) only allow you to prioritise either near or far subjects. They say nothing about autofocus quality etc...
www.panasonic.com/global/consumer/lumix/gh5_firmware.html
Brilliant, thank you!
NicK you got one more subscriber. Best settings For GH5. I have been using GH5 from long time with all other different settings but trust me you won. :)
Thanks for your comments DP. Much appreciated and glad it helped : )
Great! works awesome.
👍
