I loved watching her playing her guitar. It was real, and just fun! I’ve never been a huge fan, but this was different for sure! ❤️. Thanks for this, Fil. I must have missed the first one you did. Her voice is stunning
I give Madonna a lot of credit, for improving upon her talent and in learning to play the guitar. She really was self taught in singing and dancing in the beginning, and is always reinventing herself. The older you get, the harder it is to learn to do anything. Especially for scatter brained individuals. So it's a real commitment to learn anything new. Nice song. Thanks for sharing . It sounds alott better when you play that song. I like accoustic versions of many songs
Madonna may have been selftaught in singing and guitar playing at first. However, in her Detroit youth she had piano- and balletlessons. After graduating high school in January 1976, she received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan and studied over the summer at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina. In 1978 she left for New York, took classes at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, She also studied dance under the tutelage of the noted American dancer and choreographer Martha Graham.
This was so cool. I was listening to Madonna videos today for inspiration before I practiced. I knew she wouldn't get in front of an audience without more practice. I bet she's a perfectionist. Now I have more inspiration!🤘
As an older guitar student, I worry that my age is an impediment to gaining proficiency. But really, the issue is how much time and effort do I want to put into my playing. It is possible. Keep calm and strum on.
@@drewpall2598 Fil was my inspiration to begin lessons. His encouraging words gave me the last push I needed to fulfill my dream of learning to play guitar. I am now on the road to enjoying the gift of making music for the rest of my life.

love this analysis. before being a singer she did drums and guitar then went front singer. please review madonna live from Re-Invention tour - Rebel Heart Tour. I agree with SoCal RockerGal, Madonna is the epitome of understated talent. Shes' a Dancer 1st Musician 2nd, Song Writer 3rd. The Singer all add to her being the best live performer in our life time.
❤️ Another great video. Loving this channel! And btw of COURSE some people commented that Madonna was miming playing the guitar to a backing track… Another example of how so many people are absolutely champing at the bit to discredit her skills and talent. There are obviously far more people who enjoy her work, but these curmudgeons who refuse to believe a woman in pop music is genuinely engaged in being a musician and a singer-songwriter, despite the mountains of evidence to prove it. I’d like to say it’s baffling but unfortunately their bias is pretty transparent.
I do have to say that I don’t think we can appreciate how much work goes into an entire live show. When I began playing acoustic guitar I just taught myself but I was tight , and rigid as well and only 14 . I went from a Takamine to an Ovation . I chose Takemine because I couldn’t play the ovation around the campfire. With a small bowl it would have to be plugged in , and it’s really hard to find a tree outlet 😂 . I was picked out of a crowd a few yrs ago on the spot . I’d pay for that pic lol ,just to see the look on my face because I didn’t expect it . 😬 I’m just more comfortable around a campfire with my guitar .I have a great appreciation for what musicians do night after night . I appreciate musicians in a whole different light.I used to work in TV during University behind the scenes, running camera 1 or 2 , but a whole different ballgame being on stage. 😜 The adulation is nice ,especially when so much work is put into your performance. It’s so true, when I began to play I used to look at my hand or keep my fingers on the chords .
I seem to remember seeing, in a doco about Madonna, that she "played" guitar (electric) in some of her early punk/new wave performances in the underground club scene of those days before she achieved fame.Mind you, this could have been basic fifth voicing ala punk du hour or even just guitar posing for stage effect. Either way she may not have played seriously, but was definitely not new to guitar in the clip you showed earlier.
awesome Fil and so cool to see a huge pop star learning an instrument. One of the problems I still have is picking between cord changes to fill in the sound, for some reason it has always been difficult for me and it is so necessary for a song to sound right, but on certain songs I can do it better , like "Sweet Home Alabama", but a song like "Yesterday" I find it so hard to fill in the short time between cord changes in the intro, a strange hangup I have.
This goes to show you that it never to late to learn something new in life even if it just for fun. 👍 Madonna! great rundown on how Madonna has improve her ability on the guitar Fil.
I am a music lover with no skills as a musician, but I always enjoy your engaging videos - your technical knowledge, personality, and obvious passion for music. Comparing the two videos of Madonna was interesting and very inspiring in terms of what a person can do with commitment and perseverance. Could you analyze a Joe South song/performance please? He has so many songs he's written to choose from: Games People Play, Walk a Mile in my Shoes, Don't It Make You Want to Go Home, Hush, Rose Garden, These are Not my People, Birds of a Feather, Down in the Boondocks. Thanks Fil!

I think that at least one of these deserves and would be an ideal analysis I think you would agree and for showing how they play.their instruments. Chet Atkins is incredible and ideal for analysis. Best wishes, Rod
I have seen both of these clips multiple times. I was hoping we got to see Madonna play "Don't Tell Me" fingerstyle.Getting fingers, hands, brain to connect for fingerstyle is quite the challenge. I am going to say Madonna was at least 6 months in for the Letterman performance (could be 18 months.) Then we have the 4 years since the Letterman performance. So, second performance is min 4.5 years in and you know she had an instructor whenever and for as long as she wanted. This is not saying there were not many, many "alone" practice sessions. So much practice needed but I guess never alone could happen. I comment on guitar size. Madonna is playing a full width full top size dreadnought size guitar. I have always felt this size quitar does not photograph well, it overwhelms the person playing. No need for the size to get the sound, no need at all. Better is the smaller (000 in Martin speak, concert, auditorium 3/4 in Yamaha speak) body size and then the smaller width (John Mayer plays an 000-28 Martin and he is 6'3".) Check a video of Taylor Smith playing her full size acoustic guitar. It is like someone needs to tell her her underwear is showing (guitar is too big for her.) Thanks Fil.
She clearly practiced quite a lot for it's plainly altered her lower arm and wrist mass in the interval. She grew guitarist arms. Oh, by the way, Luiz Bonfá, please: ruclips.net/video/0gfwNUJNXaM/видео.html - I know you'll love this for all the technique analysis it affords.

She can play barre chords now, well has been able to for years. There's a video of her from 2003 and I'm sure it's a b barre chord she's playing so she's definitely progressed loads. That first video of her playing Don't Tell Me, she's definitely a beginner there. Whoever said she'd been playing since the 70s is full of shit. She's proper staring at where her fingers are going and can't change to the g in time. She's just a bit behind the level I'm at now after 10 months

Long way to go before she catches Suzanne Vega, but I respect her for learning an actual instrument.
She started out on drums, drumming to Elvis Costello records. Madonna has a very good ear and though she was late to guitar, much like me she sings melodies and then has her collaborator figure out the chords. It's still composing and it still takes good musical sensibility to do. She also recorded most of her vocals in one or two takes, and the isolated vocals sound good, and they were on DAT not autotuned.
