Changing a rim cylinder on a Segal jimmy proof deadbolt lock

If you need to "re-key" your Segal surface mount deadbolt, replacing the rim cylinder is the easy and secure way to do it. Not all Lockmith projects are DIY projects, but this project is easy, inexpensive and by going the DIY route, you'll be saving some money.

Can I swap out a jimmy proof lock key cylinder with a combination cylinder and keep the original lock?
I see them advertised for deadbolt locks.

Yes, as long as the new cylinder aligns and operates with the existing lock. It may be difficult to find that cylinder, fyi. Please let me know what you find. Thanks!

This might be a dumb question- but are there different models numbers for Segal's deadbolt cylinders? Or, is it one size fit all and they are just cut to size?

Hi, what kind of pliers did you use hold and cut the rim piece? I tried to do this repair and did not have the right tools to cut the piece. The klein tools is a pliers, what is the other one? I didnt realize it could just be snapped , I saw videos of people cutting it which I tried to do and failed.

Diana…. The other tool I used in the video is a locking pliers made by Milwaukee. However…. You should be able to use almost any type of pliers for this project. The key is that that tail piece I resize in the video is pre scored. Because of that, it’s easy to snap off regardless of the type of pliers used. It sounds like you might be trying to resize a tailpiece that isn’t pre scored, and that would be rather difficult to do with pliers. My advice would be to try and find a rim cylinder that has a pre scored tailpiece. Or, you will need a tailpiece that is the exact same size, which might be hard to source from a hardware store (a locksmith will have that piece, though). I hope this makes sense. Good luck!
