@@badz1497 I think every team and every engine supplier has its bad years. The good thing that came out of that is that McLaren focused on its other problems during that time, which allowed them to design a great chasis for the last couple of years. Hopefully they will stay competitive.

At the start of the hybrid era, it was better to focus on power and reliability, even if that carried a weight and packaging penalty. If Dennis had allowed Honda to focus on power and reliability first, then make the engine more compact, the strategy that Mercedes used, perhaps the hybrid era would have been more competitive, as Red Bull could have moved to Honda power earlier. With a Honda powerunit at the the same level of Mercedes, Red Bull could have used higher downforce setups, without being destroyed on the straights, this would have pushed Hamilton and Mercedes hard at every race, we saw in 2016 with Rosberg, that Hamilton could be beaten, if extreme pressure was applied. '17 and esp '18 were competitive but Seb fucked it up himself 3x a 2x had a bad luck. Red Bull was fast in '18 too, but bad reliability
@ fck off with this bs...in '17 Ferrari had huge reliability issues, Seb made viewer mistakes than Hamilton that season. In '18 yes Seb fcked it up in Germany but he was still ahead at this point, after the summer break Ferrari literally had a slower car and by the end of the season Ferrari was third fastest after Redbull. Ferrari always lacked in developement throughout the season, while Mercedes closed the gap within one weekend and kept developing to always become the clearly faster car by the end of the season. '18 and '17 was not all Seb's fault and the blame for '17 was more on the Ferrari's side for sure.
No wonder when watching the Red Bull car's back, it reminded me of the Mclarens! Didn't know that it was more technical rather than what meets the eye. This is possibly one of the best videos explaining the technicalities of a F1 car.
Based on reports, the Mercedes engine still has the higher BHP, improved cooling & better ERS development based on gains made this year but I really hope Honda face no major surprising issues. A three-day test may not be representative on reliability.

One of the "tricks" Honda is using is burning extra fuel in order to recover more energy while slowing down. This should mean their ERS doesn't run out of steam on long straights anymore and can be deployed more often without running out of energy on longer laps. In short more power more of the time.
@@zwamman not sure about that. But the story is that the Honda engine is efficient enough to do with less fuel so they have a little to spare which they use to generate more energy to flow to the batteries. So let's say they use some of the energy, this the battery is at 60%. In that scenario they add some fuel to generate energy to use during the next acceleration or on the straight.
Post 2021 (13 Feb 2022 at time of this posting) looking back the Honda power units (PU) was indeed very reliable. Honda it seems have not only built a motor that rivals Mercedes in power, it is proven to be more compact and arguably more durable. Christian Horner even said had it not been for the high speed shunt by Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the British GP damaging the Honda PU, Red Bull would not have needed any more PU above the allocated 3 units. Mercedes on the other hand had to take extra PU's as they decided their PU's were degrading and bleeding more hp's than they are comfortable with against what is also equally ageing Honda PU's. Checo would have been looking at a step up PU and would no doubt have been shocked to see the size. It would be like seeing an ipod for the first time.
Thanks for sharing, that's amazing and only real engineers and true car enthusiasts understand and appreciate it. This also will have implications for Honda products and maybe a Honda hyper car and replace Honda V10 hyper car development. May also affect NSX.
For Honda to leave with a championship will be a hugely emotional affair. So much pride if they do win after almost getting from F1. Best of luck for Max and Sergio this year!
On the Engine side, Mercedes is a step ahead. As i watched the preseason test, none of merc drivers go to 8th gear even in straights with Drs open, which shows they were using extremely low power engine modes. I believe there will be a minor discrepancy between Honda and Mercedes left. But on the chassis/aero side, It seems redbull is in a better place. All in all, W12 is probably a nervous car but fast as always. And RB16B look much planted and extremely closer.
Kudos to Honda for making a stunning comeback in terms of reliability and power output in its PU. If this year's PU is able to be bang for the buck as compared to the latest spec Merc PU, it would be a tremendous achievement before leaving the sport.
RB are fast for this weekend. Honda has huge engine R&D from its MotoGP bikes as well. Honda have said that it is only in racing, to train their engineers to a higher level.
I would rather have Japanese engineering than German engineering, just like Toto said am not worried about renault's engine but more worried about Honda, bring on 2022 !
It wasn't actually Honda who came up with the "size zero" concept, it was McLarens' aero director Peter Prodromou, who worked alongside Adrian Newey, the inspiration for his implementation of the concept for the MP4-30 at the time. This of course pushed the Honda PU to the absolute limit in terms of cooling and made their life and development extremely difficult. Naturally that was just one of many reasons why they failed to make a decent engine in their first 2-3 years of their comeback, but I personally think it was one of the bigger topics at the time (Red Bull Renault in 2014 had similar cooling issues due to tight packaging).
I know pre-season testing means nothing but... in 2015 what we saw was what we got and pretty much has been since for most teams except Ferrari. Even when Merc hasn't been runaway favorites, they've been strong and RB has always seemed a step behind. Now they look a bit closer I do believe we will have a fight on our hands. Bring it on.
I'm not convinced the changes are enough to outweigh Mercedes. Do we really think an outgoing engine supplier who hasn't come close to dethroning Mercedes of a world title for two years in a row will suddenly come up with an engine that will catch Mercedes? I don't. But that's just me.
I read they also changed the deck height of the block which would mean shorter connecting rods. Valve angle angle changes can lead ti huge increases in power by themselves. The question I have is what theyre doing with their static and dynamic compression. I would think high static but fairly low dynamic to take advantage of the turbo and MGU-H
GoatseObama If it turns out that Mercedes dominates the 2021 season from race 1 on then there's a change that Mercedes has an all new driver line up for 2022 with Verstappen and Russell as teammates. If so, i don't see Russell win 8th in a row.
While you make a valid analysis of RBR and Honda, You have downplayed Mercedes power in every video you make since the test ended. I will not be quick to conclude on this but it has many people deluded that RBR have already won the championship. We can only hope that RBR give us a nice show this year competing with Mercedes. But we shouldn't go to an extreme capitalizing on Mercedes testing weaknesses to conclude that RBR have already won.

RbNetEngr To be fair, Han is a talented driver. But he has the perfect BETA teammate and a Car and Team leaps and bounds better than everyone else. So yea, I’d argue he is a bit overrated and lucky in that regard.
I'm only a casual motorsport watcher, and appreciate any inputs to my questions: 1. why is Honda quiting F1 just when its engine program is starting to come to fruition? And what will happen to its program when it leaves? Simply shelf it?? And who will supply Red Bull now? 2. The fact that only Honda, with massive R&D, is only able to come close to competing agaist the Merc engine shows how ahead of the game Merc has been. 3. Looking back, McLaren made a huge strategic mistake in allowing Aloson to so publicly dictate their relationship with Honda so negatively. Sometimes drivers should drives and not try to be engineers and politicians. But i guess Red Bull should thank Aloson for his public opinions about Honda, but honestly I did not expect McLaren to ditch Honda becuse of their history together.

I don't understand why they leave when they make such a huge impact on the sport
@@jimmy5516 the environmental hippies is why
@@vynnxa6416 Well, no. It's a combination of factors. I think mostly the pandemic. Honda has a history of pulling out of F1 during financial hardship, and it somehow always lines up with them being on the verge of a breakthrough! Many of the engine manufacturers are now pursing electric technology in favor of internal combustion, which I imagine is also a factor.
@@badz1497 I think every team and every engine supplier has its bad years. The good thing that came out of that is that McLaren focused on its other problems during that time, which allowed them to design a great chasis for the last couple of years. Hopefully they will stay competitive.
Ron Dennis was right about size zero, BUT his timing was completely wrong.
As Red Bull pushed Mercedes, tensions would have arisen, it is easy to be cool Toto, when your car is so much faster, just look at machine-like Ferrari in the 2000s, compared to clown school Ferrari in 2020...
"If Dennis had allowed Honda to focus on power and reliability first, then make the engine more compact, the strategy that Mercedes used, perhaps the hybrid era would have been more competitive, as Red Bull could have moved to Honda power earlier."
I don't see how, given that McLaren had negotiated the exclusive usage of Honda's engine. To be able to supply Red Bull, they'd have to change the contract.

Surely Red Bull is doing all they can to keep Honda at Red Bull
@@chodagreat7876 If I'm not mistaken Honda have supplied RedBull with some of their current F1 project personnel and a lot of information on facility needs for their new venture in designing and manufacturing of their own power units. @@PLZFrosty you are correct. And I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a cheeky move on their part. Think about it. Honda knows they have something good. They push to have an engine freeze. Only way to do that is to have Honda pull out and RB take over. This was honestly one of your best videos ever
Clear, concise and simple to understand yet it s not missing any technical note.
Well done
Yeah, not a 10min ramble to make vid longer for ads
Toyota also ran into reliability problems with their engines at one point because their technical director Mike Gascoigne demanded engine chief Luca Marmorini make the block and core architecture as small and light as possible. The car needs to be a complete package, so there has to be some give and take on the engineering side. :)
Sucks that Honda is leaving F1, hopefully the nex-gen engine regulations will tempt them back, especially if carbon-neutral biofuels are part of future F1.
We are going to have a title fight to watch ladies and gentlemen. This will be the first f1 season I've been interested in since the advent of hybrid engines.
Yuki can potentially spoil Gasly's party .. he was very very fast in F2 ... looks like he has adapted very quickly , he was ripping during testing

Last time I was this early Williams could actually fight for P18
Im just glad we have (at least) 1 Japanese engine manufacturer on the grid. We can only hope they come back soon!
One of the "tricks" Honda is using is burning extra fuel in order to recover more energy while slowing down. This should mean their ERS doesn't run out of steam on long straights anymore and can be deployed more often without running out of energy on longer laps.
In short more power more of the time.
Isnt't there a strict limit on the amount of fuel allowed to burn when off-throttle? I think this was put in place to ban any form of blown diffuser.
God I hope they come back in 2025 🤞🏻
Well.... Qualification says it all. Both Red Bull and Alpha Tauri did really well 👍🏽

They just wanted Yuki to have great engine
Thanks for sharing, that's amazing and only real engineers and true car enthusiasts understand and appreciate it. This also will have implications for Honda products and maybe a Honda hyper car and replace Honda V10 hyper car development. May also affect NSX.
For Honda to leave with a championship will be a hugely emotional affair. So much pride if they do win after almost getting from F1.
Best of luck for Max and Sergio this year!
F1 has always been more exciting with Honda in the mix! Let's hope they are just taking a short vacation and come back stronger than ever.

Switching to honda might be the single best decision redbull has ever made in a last 10 years
Your backside man. Talk kak here, Yesis

Those F1 engineers are so clever that they even worked out how to squeeze an extra S into 'redesigned' and an extra C into 'cylinder'!
Meanwhile at Ferrari: 'is the new fuel supply now smaller than size zero?'
Would be good if this actually had video or graphics of the engine vs just voiceover over general clips.
Too bad honda is leaving just when it looks like they had closed the gap to Merc
Engine development is frozen tho until 2025
Really wish Honda wasn't leaving f1. Always exciting to have more engine manufacturers in the sport.
More interested to see where Ferrari is power wise
Kudos to Honda for making a stunning comeback in terms of reliability and power output in its PU.
If this year's PU is able to be bang for the buck as compared to the latest spec Merc PU, it would be a tremendous achievement before leaving the sport.

Motorcycle technology at Honda is incredible. I have no doubt application of it to it’s formula one program will be a success.
If only McLaren hadn’t been so demanding at the start and given Honda time
Not only that but that car was also awful, they just kept blaming Honda
@@DavidJones-iz5zv More specifically Alonso blaming Honda, very publicly.
RB are fast for this weekend. Honda has huge engine R&D from its MotoGP bikes as well. Honda have said that it is only in racing, to train their engineers to a higher level.
Honda gonna win the world championship then dip like rosberg did
I would rather have Japanese engineering than German engineering, just like Toto said am not worried about renault's engine but more worried about Honda, bring on 2022 !
what's still usefull, dont let it go to waste 🙂
Last time I was this early Sebastian Vettel was the world champion
If anyone can its Honda
@@DavidJones-iz5zv Is it though? Honda haven't won a world championship in this century. Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault all have - multiple times over.

2030 Redbull are looking to be competitive with Mercedes after Russell's 8th title in a row.

Niiiice very informative on the power unit side of things because thats where we F1 fans are interested in and not always about aero. Hope you can do an indepth power unit on ferrari and renault... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

To be fair, Han is a talented driver. But he has the perfect BETA teammate and a Car and Team leaps and bounds better than everyone else.
So yea, I’d argue he is a bit overrated and lucky in that regard.
I'm only a casual motorsport watcher, and appreciate any inputs to my questions:
1. why is Honda quiting F1 just when its engine program is starting to come to fruition?
Alonso always has had a big mouth ...
I'm early again so i just say s🅱️inalla
Noticed this year on redbull flying laps at bahrain the exhaust is still pumping boat loads of air off throttle while downshifting, the sound wasn't there last year.
So if the exhaust was still active off throttle the MGU-H would still be scavenging energy
Mercedes always performs better when they're on the backfoot. Remember when ferrari were spanking them with that "engine" in 2019? Incredibly mercedes managed to build legal engine that run rings around that ferrari engine. I'm expecting the same this year.
I'm sad to see Honda go especially after seeing them finally finding their stride with Red Bull.
Stop it don’t give me hope
F1 engines have camshafts? I thought they'd replaced those with common rail/pneumatic valves 2-3 decades ago.
