McLaren’s re-emergence as a Formula 1 race-winning force with Daniel Ricciardo’s victory in the Italian Grand Prix is the culmination of three years of improvement, but it was only possible because of the team’s painful rude awakening in the first half of 2018. In this video Edd Straw revisits how McLaren finally realised its problems were not all Honda's fault, and the big changes that were made to put the team back on the up.

McLaren could be like Red Bull with their Honda if the internal problem (+Alonso) doesn't ruin the plan project

@VERY EVIL PERSON FROM ILLUMINATI Alonso wasn't the problem Tim Goss was the problem he designed the McLaren's from 2013-18 he couldn't find and solve correlation issues with the 2013 and 14 cars, he forced Honda to design the engine to fit the car unlike Red Bull who said to Honda you design the engine we will make it fit in our car. Finally in 2018 he put the front axle in the wrong place and in 2018 he finally got fired and its no coincidence that in 2019 was a big improvement.

@@classicsportclassictiyl8547 I think Ron Dennis was also played a big part to the downfall in the mclaren honda. He was simply too ambitious and not patient enough. The way he handled the problem was really poor and he kept having problem with the investor and sponsorship. The reason why Alonso keep badmouthing the car was he promised and guaranteed by Ron Dennis a championship contender car, and what he got was very far from even a middle row car. Just see how calm and polite alonso to alpine this season compared to when him in mclaren honda. He didn't get a promise that he would get a championsip contender car, instead alpine ask him to work together to make a better car and work to challenge the championship in 2022 or 2023. You can argue that the reason alonso is calmer nowadays is because he is simply more mature now, but even if he did keep badmouthing mclaren honda because he didn't get what they promised to him, he still has a point.

Mclaren chassis weakness was already evident in 2013 and 2014. But they were always covered by excuses. Especially in 2014 were they had Mercedes power, so basically the best engine on the grid, but still were nowhere in performance.
2013: "it was a mistake, but the regulations are changing, will be back in 2014".
2014: "It's because Mercedes no longer works for us only"
    2015: "It's Honda's fault"
    2016: "It's Honda's fault"
    2017: "It's Honda's fault"
So when they arrived in 2018 with a new engine, they really thought they were going to be fighting with RB, but then everybody saw that after all, although Honda was partially to blame for the previous years, it wasn't Honda's fault alone. in 2018 the car had cooling issues to the point of burning the engine cover, it was less reliable then Renault and RB and the performance again, was not that great.
So it became pretty evident that something was wrong and it wasn't the engine.

Would it have continued heading toward basket-case status or would it have completed a similar turnaround?? It would have collapsed completely and they would be relegated to a historical footnote. The best thing Mansour Ojieh did was look at Ron's attempt to buy out the shareholders as a hostile bid to control a team that was clearly sinking under his direction. Dennis was stuck in his ways and refused any attempt to change for the sake of the team and the business, and that was costing the shareholders millions. He completely floundered when it became clear he would have to put in the actual footwork and effort on the commercial side to secure the team's financial foundation, instead of coming to terms with the fact that sponsors didn't care how great McLaren was, they wanted to know how McLaren was going to win. What a lot of people still don't realize is that Zak Brown was exactly the right person to succeed Dennis, it just took a long time for people to see just how much work he had to put in to clean up after Dennis' years of near catastrophic management.

We cannot downsize Ron's achievements as team principal, because he made Mclaren one of the most successful team in F1's history. I was sad, when he went away from the company, because in naivety I believed, he would make the team great again. But in retrospect, Dennis' departure is one of the best thing that happened with the team. His work ethics, perfectionism doesn't fit in the modern F1 anymore. As a committed Mclaren fanatic, I'm not wondering why many people didn't like them. Mclaren was too grey, too professional, too cold, too arogant... But as Zak and Andreas came in the leadership, they changed everything for the better. Today, Mclaren is nothing like the old days, it's a fun, lighthearted company full with optimism and also they are down to earth. There is nowhere the "we have the best chassis on the grid, only Honda is the one we can blame" bullshit... Instead of Zak said, okay we came home in 1-2, but there's still long way ahead of us. And that's why it's great we are no longer under Ron's leadership :)

This year alone, they knew full well what they where doing when reviving that iconic livery with Gulf and had the merchandise ready to purchase (promptly selling out), the limited edition offerings have been on point and seem to have good success(I've bought one and and will by a DannyRic sweatshirt for the wife) and are quickly available around the world, and without the need to pay eyewatering shipping expenses.

I still find it astonishing that Mclaren lost its patience with Honda. They allowed Honda to develop and improve their engine for years and then traded engines! Now the Honda engine is winning races thanks to all those years with Mclaren. Extremely naive decision.

Honda is winning because they found a team that let them design the engine how they want it.Mclaren wanted it to fit into a small chassis so honda had to make comprises while redbull let them develop the motor and than build the chassis around the engine instead of building the engine around the chassis

Another wonderful video. Thank you THE RACE its great to get all this insight into the world of Formula 1. Your absolutely right, 2018 was the wake up call that Mclaren needed. Also something that I often find gets overlooked is the work that Alonso and Vandorne put in. the advantage of 2018 over 2015-2017 was reliability. Even if your coming plum last every race your still gathering alot more data than if you were breaking down on lap 3 every race. Because of the reliability of the Reanult engine over the Honda they were able to gather far more data and understand there flaws.

Other than the drivers the rise of McLaren can be attributed to Siedl and Zak's easy go mentality by not pressurising the team or drivers. This win will do Ricciardo's confidence a big boost and he has just shown he can hold off Max better than Bottas in a Merc. That Toro Rosso color scheme in the video made it look exactly like a Red Bull drink can.

McLaren used to have this snob geeky image under Ron Dennis, the cold calculating, hard science, hard numbers team. Everything done by them are calculated and must be precise.
I saw the cracks from their road cars. The F1 used to be the real king of the road. But then they got too cocky when the term "hypercar" were invented surrounding the 2013 trio of LaFerrari, 918 Spyder, and P1. The P1 come out bottom at most tests. The driver from Motor Trend politely characterise their unwieldiness (the messy laps) as the car being "driver's car". What's even more pathetic is the McLaren team were there, and they tweaked the car, deflated the tires and done everything they could, but wouldn't improve the time.
I stupidly believed that it was Honda engine, and McLaren cars were actually fine. The British bias in me was so great at the time, until McLaren-Renault exposed how "good" McLaren really is.
Glad that they are now back. Like Williams, they simply grow on me. I no longer view my favourite Ferrari the same way again after scandals after scandals.

This video downplays how shit Honda was in the early years. While McLaren is not blameless, the 2016 and 2017 chassis did seem to be decent performing well at tracks like Monaco and Hungary. Even in the beginning of 2018 McLaren was increasingly competitive until it was found that there was a fundamental issue with the aero, I believe it was the distance between the wheels and the bargeboards. Why we insist on trying to rewrite history is beyond me lol.

I know most of Great Britain wants Norris to be huge but Ricardo might be the better driver and leaning into Norris could be a mistake if the car keeps getting better. Ricardo showed why Red Bull wanted him to stay so bad. He started, and was holding them off so the notion of him winning because the top two DNFed is myopic. I've always thought highly of Ricardo and he's great for the sport because he's actually affable and a great ambassador. Either way McClaren will be competing the rest of the season and next as well.

Tim Goss was the problem he designed the McLaren's from 2013-18 he couldn't find and solve correlation issues with the 2013 and 14 cars, he forced Honda to design the engine to fit the car unlike Red Bull who said to Honda you design the engine we will make it fit in our car. Finally in 2018 he put the front axle in the wrong place and in 2018 he finally got fired and its no coincidence that in 2019 was a big improvement.
