I was diagnosed as 1point away from being prediabetic....it took 3 years to slowly loose a little weight...but was still obese till I went plant based....then lost another 40lbs ...lowered my A1C and reduced my LDL cholesterol by 30%. Been keeping the weight off since. All my weight loss methods before never stuck...I just added the weight back on....not anymore...this is my lifestyle now....no longer obese...need to change my profile Pic lol... and I feel tons better...I'm older and need a little more sleep than decades ago....but...I no longer need naps or whole days sleeping to recover from a busy work week...my recovery time is much less. I didn't test my blood in those 3 years...but Based on how I felt I think my blood sugar may have been off at times now that I know more about it all. I used to get very sleepy after a meal but no more...I'm wide awake and have more energy than before. So I'm gonna keep this lifestyle up! No wonder Jack lalanne could keep it up all those years even doing finger tip push ups at age 95!! Lol.
I also added exercise....5 minutes at first...it was hard being obese and using my exercise bike...my big belly was in the way lol....i couldnt jog or walk much because i couldnt stand more than 5 minutes without my back hurting.....it took awhile...so I just took it easy...lost more weight then I got better at exercise...now 45 min is no big...heart rate about 110-130 just moderate exercise...but it keeps the blood flowing and a good little sweat lol.
Now lifting weights again...only 5lbs to start lol but building up.
Who says being a senior has to be weak and frail? Shoot there is a 100 year old Vegan out there doing marathons!! I'm gonna keep my eyes on Jesus first.....then my heroes are Jack and that 100 year old Vegan! LOL
God Bless and may everyone prosper and be in health as your soul prospers! (3 John 2)

I have pre-diabetes and have decided to address the causes - diet. I do get sufficient exercise. I like many of the things that should be limited severely or avoided - candy, ice cream, pasta for example. Would these dietary restrictions be reduced if I am successful at reversing pre-diabetes? A1C 6.2% Fasting blood glucose 100. I am taking Metformin.
What could be learned by using a CGM device to make better lifestyle choices?

You can be prediabetic with a fasting BG in the 90s. I was, and I attributed my symptoms to old age. I was diagnosed at 65. In my case, I was not overweight (130LBS), and I thought I was eating a moderate diet and avoiding sugars and over-processed foods. My genes were winning the war, along with my insomnia and stress. DM runs heavily on my mother's side. She has avoided DM but has had prediabetes on/off most of her life. I am also a nurse, so I do research. I am now in the safe zone not prediabetic, but I follow less than 50g/day of carbs wholesome foods, increased my exercise activities, and do IF with two meals a day. I am struggling however to maintain a normal body weight; I lose it easily. For the first six months, I checked my Bg fasting, before and 2 to 3 hours after eating. How you are going to know which foods affect you the most. If I was a dr, I would recommend my patients check bg this way to develop a diet approach that works for them. But I do not have problems with anxiety and emotions when my health is at risk. Nothing else was wrong with me just the A1C. I wished I could get a CGM but they are too expensive, and you have to have DM dx to get one, the finger monitors are cheaper. Now that I have become a pro at managing my eating and routine, I no longer check my bg every day; maybe 5 times a month, just to keep things in check. I also stopped Metformin after three months my dr did not like it, but I did not feel I needed any meds. For me, It was a disappointment to discover my lifestyle did not work, but on the positive, I gain lots of extra knowledge on how to better take care of my health.

I typically have a fasting blood glucose level, first thing in the morning, around 95 to 105. It’s been like this the last few years that I’ve been checking. I use two blood glucose monitors because I don’t trust just one. My post prandial glucose levels, however, never reach pre-diabetic numbers. So, I am wondering if I am experiencing the “Dawn effect“, or what is this?
I do experience this odd sensation of anxiety in the early morning hours. I get these tremors and internal vibrations proceeding my wake up time. So, I wonder if this stressful event is raising my blood sugar. It’s certainly not due to low blood glucose, because mine is slightly high. I’m seeing a neurologist in a month, to address the tremors, amongst many other neurological symptoms.
If I check my blood glucose 2 to 4 hours after eating, it can be back down into the low 80’s. But, again, my morning glucose level can get as high as about 105. What is going on?

Excellent information! I am a Diabetes Prevention Instructor/Trainer, and some programs can help individuals to lose weight, become more physically active and receive nutritional counseling. One program is the National Diabetes Prevention Program which is now offered online. This evidence-based program is over 70% effective and works with your primary doctor by tracking your weight and A1C. This program is excellent for people who need help losing weight and guidance.

So true! Do not underestimate the relationship of poor sleep hygiene and cravings. If there are any barriers to keeping good sleep hygiene, such as illness, sleep apnea, stress, pain or bad habits (like staying up too late when there's an early start to a work day or looking at screens too late ie your phone), caffeine, alcohol, drugs, depression, or any cause for insomnia, your brain will try to compensate the lack of sleep for calories (energy). It makes it very difficult to cut sugary or starchy foods AND it makes it so that you're tired so it's also harder to work out. So many people who sleep little beat themselves up for not having the "self control" to stay away from potato chips or sweet food snacking. Find out what's keeping you up at night and address that. Getting proper sleep makes it so much easier to stop the unhealthy food cravings and to also begin being more active.

First 11 minutes: information, diabetes consequences. Testing, symptoms. After 11 minutes: make sure you loose weight. The more fat you have in your body the more difficult glucose will work in your cells/body. Eat right foods. Caloric restriction/reduction, or just eat less smaller meals. Stay away from refine sugars, candies, sirups, etc. Read food labels. Go to a nutritionist to learn how to make good food choices. Exercise, walk 10 thousand steps or more. don't be sedentary. Not sleeping enough produces cortisol and cortisol can raise blood sugar and cholesterol. Quit smoking, casmuses inflammation and increases chances of diabetes. At 25 minutes: treatment, medication, and advice for type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: pre-diabetis can be reversed.

Hi, thanks for this informative video. You've talked about genetics, diet and exercise. My question is that is it possible for people with pre-diabetes to develop diabetes despite having a healthy diet and good exercise routine just due to chronic anxiety? A lot of times people end up with diabetes cuz their stress levels are perpetually high and elevated stress levels affect the duration and quality of sleep. What can be done in this regard to prevent diabetes? I;m referring to stress management and poor quality of sleep. Kindly, shed light on these two topics. Lastly, you mentioned that one should take 10,000 steps a day besides a 30mins workout session. How can we incorporate this in our regular routines, esp if we have a hectic 9 - 5 job? Thanks

I really want to reverse it in a healthy way without relying on a caloric deficit (I am currently in the first trimester experiencing HG so I’m sure I’m already deficient in terms of food) but I want to keep the weight I lost off…if I’m pre diabetic am I more than likely going to have gestational diabetes? What are recommendations for pregnant women?

About 70% of pre-diabetics eventually advance into Type 2 diabetes. If you are pre-diabetic tell your doctor to give you a prescription for a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM). You cannot get a CGM without a prescription. If your Dr. refuses to write the prescription, find a Dr. who will write a prescription for a CGM. I entered pre-diabetes . . . I'm active and not overweight . . . weight and exercise was not a factor. It took me over a year without a CGM to bump from 5.7 to 5.6 on a low-carb diet. After I requested and received a CGM, it showed me everything I needed to know to get my glucose down to, essentially, whatever I want. Now (via CGM) I'm figuring out how to work in more carbs (bread, potatoes) while still keeping numbers low. The CGM was essential for me to see exactly what causes spikes, what to eat, when to eat, and in what order to eat foods from the plate

This was very helpful. I recently was diagnosed with pre diabetes and my doctor didn’t even call me. She just left a message in the portal essentially telling me to eat healthy and lose weight. But I’m predisposed and worried that it won’t be enough. This was really reassuring that I can reverse my pre diabetes. I’ve actually already lost 6lbs since learning I was diagnosed (a little over a month) and so hearing that losing as little as 5% of your body weight can have a huge impact. Thank you for all of this great information!
