I have the opposite problem. I am constantly wanting to get out. However in January 2016 I was assaulted while at work and suffered a traumatic brain injury and had brain surgery which saved my life. Problem is I am dealing with really bad headaches and balance issues and some other problems. So getting out can be very difficult at times and I miss it so much. I kind of watch your videos as a way of getting outdoors and shooting as weird as that sounds.
I was hit six time sin the back of the head with heavy metal object. My brain was shoved over 6 mm to the left. I was seeing rainbow colors floating around and my balance was-is completely messed up I keep falling backwards even to this day. My emotions are messed up sometimes I just start crying with no reason and the headaches are always with. Before the surgery I couldn't even talk sometimes. I would know exactly what I was trying to say but it just couldn't come out. My cognitive ability was 3rd grade at best and my memory is bad. Now I can talk and the prismatic colors are gone. My cognitive functions are working much much better. :)
I'm studying photography and love your channel but I didn't feel motivated to watch any photogarphy video today (for a few days actually). But I watched it and I'm so glad I did! I feel motivated again and want to go out and shoot!
I used to be a fulltime racing cyclist, and oh the times that I did not want to even SEE my bike... I developed something I call the "15 minute rule". When you just have no interest in getting out, force yourself to do so, but know that in 15 minutes, if you still have no interest in being out, turn around and head home. For cycling, that would mean I'd at least get 30 minutes, or so, in my legs. What happened 90+% of the times when I followed that rule?... I got into it, and ended up having a worthwhile ride. Maybe not always the best, but I'd always feel better afterward. Ticket is to just get out and get started. Very nice shot from this "found" outing. Looking forward to 2018's calendar!
Thank you for showing yourself natural and more like a human being Thomas. Feels very sincere. This is a nice breath after continuously watching most RUclipsrs, who always act ecstatic and psyched over everything. Thank you.
Sometimes you need some time off,a little break does you good.i love the lakes/hills and spend a lot of time there but sometimes i find absence makes the heart grow fonder
Summer sucks. I absolutely hate July and August in the Southeastern U.S. I feel your pain. 90 degrees, 90% humidity, and a million ticks in the woods and fields.
You have no idea how much I agree. Summer has always typically been such a drain for me. The sun rises before you even have a chance to wake, it's hot and humid, the light is vertical and immensely bland most of the time, but.. the show must go on so I guess I'll just have to deal with it this time. (Southern hemisphere here).
This is just how I feel in the summer....the summer funk. Everything is so green! I switched over to shooting events and festivals during the summer months and it helps a lot - meeting people and doing a different vibrant type of photography. By the autumn, I'm finished with festivals and embrace those lovely changing colours and feel re-energised to create images. Not long now, just get September out of the way (which usually has some lovely misty mornings).
The essential basis of photography is light, chasing light is not really a technique is something philosophical a way of life in the existential state of being, it is about how to pursue those rare moments when nature offers us its maximum explendor. This is the fuel of photography and it is our reason to be, to see how it hits things. I like your channel inspired me. Indeed. !!!!! Absolutely stunning !!!!!
I am sitting at home, staring at my camera and feeling exactly the same. It's near 100 degrees out and not much beauty to behold. It's so hard to motivate yourself under these conditions. Can't wait till fall. It's so refreshing to see that even the great ones feel like we do sometimes.
I get the wintertime blues in the east coast US. I'm glad you got out and found your Mojo in that forest and with that sunset. Keep it up! Love the videos!
Gosh I have just spent two weeks shooting landscapes for a client and have been so restricted by lack of time on locations due to the clients plans. This is what it's all about. Planning and searching for compositions it feels like an eternity (only 2 weeks) since I had the time and luxury of searching for compositions and waiting for the light. I have really missed it. So I still have another week left of working with my client and have suggested that they just give me the locations that they want and I will photograph them at the right time and in the right light. It is so frustrating to turn up to a location with anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour to try and capture a good print quality image. Not possible unless very lucky. I love those moments when you are waiting for the light and you hope it arrives and when it does. BANG! Nailed it.
Every time I am watching Thomas' video and I am telling myself....I need to GET OUT and SHOOT some photos. And then after 3 days in the office destroyed by the non-sense customers and managers and I went home and absolutely doesn't wanna do anything, and need to spend the time with wife and kids...and then I wasted my 4 days weekends without photography experience (one thing that I am interested the most). And yet I am still telling myself to GO OUT and SHOOT while I am watching the video....There is an POSITIVE energy that is still coming to my brain. I just wanna say Thank you for posting those videos go out and play with the cameras because I know this positive energy one day will bring me to the camping trip for the fun!
I have felt similarly and as an amateur photographer it is ever so much more important to get out and practice in an attempt to develop my photography skills. Once you finally get out the day becomes more productive. I love it.
As you say Tom, motivation is the key. What I find really helps is having a mate and committing to a day in advance, because when you get out in the field it is magic. For you, I can see your mate is RUclips, so please keep it going. I was up on the North Yorkshire Moors 10 days ago, and the heather up there was equally stunning, but luckily no midges!
A brilliant vlog. It's just the way the story unfolds, the struggle to overcome not being motivated, dealing with horrible light conditions that in the end turn out an absolutely incredible image. Again, a great inspiration!
I can understand there will be days where you will hit that wall as Im sure many of us will have days like that in our own walks of life and one reason I think is when you love your work but not feeling that you will do your best, can act as a barrier. Glad you decided to get out as you got a lovely image there and the moment the sun hit your face, could see the day was well and truly worth it
Thank you Thomas, I need inspiration and motivation and you provide, someday I will be brave enough to post again, but for now thank you for being there.
i know this video is a year old, but it hits home so much for me. so frequently do i just feel "meh, "sounds like a lot of work" i know i'll start out grouchy if i go, but i know i'll regret it and be frustrated with myself if i don't. great video.
I think my favorite part of the video is when you got excited that the light was coming, it shined on your face, and you were lit up, literally and figuratively. On a different note...I have a harder time taking my camera out when I'm hiking or backpacking because I'm more in the moment and stopping for photos takes me out of it.
Mid Spring through late Fall is a great time for photography. Most of my best landscapes and cityscapes are shot during this 1/2 of the year. I really like Spring when the flowers and rees bloom, and the brilliant Fall colors. I'm not that interested in Winter unless there's exceptional snow.
Because of videos like this, I stumbled about in the darkness outside a hut in the alps a few days ago, trying to get some images of the milky way rising above the nightly landscape. In the process, I attracted some cows and startled the dog of a camper who proceeded to wake up a bunch of people staying in or nearby the hut (which I am a bit sorry for). The images are nothing to write home about. It was totally worth it :) Thank you for uploading these inspiring videos, and please keep them coming.
Just got back from my 3 weeks USA trip and Im spending now my morning of watching all the videos I have missed. Great picture Tom. I think the best about this picture is the small amount of time when the conditions were right. Cheers Stefan
Lethargic energy levels, I get this because of disabilities, but it happens to everyone. Few deep breathes, complete a few tasks(ironing, hoovering, etc) and you will feel accomplishment and drive to accomplish much more. All the best Thomas, thanks for such inspirational videos.😀
Thomas, this is the best video you have made so far. Thank you, I almost cried. Amazing soundtrack and stunning landscapes. You are my inspiration, my stimulus to improve every single day non only in Photography. Once you said that "the important thing is being here. Photography is easy".
I feel like this sometimes and I liken it to writers block. You have exhausted your creativity and feel there is nothing to shoot it's all been done, and you feel like giving up. Sometimes it can occur after you made an exceptional photographic work that you feel you can't better. One method I have for dealing with this is to have 2 google photo folders, one I call photo art, and one I call editorial. The editorial folder is for every day photos of life, snapshots in time of buildings, farms, roads, or people going about their life. It's like a time capsule for my local area. When I feel writers block I go out with the idea of just taking a few editorial photos. I sometimes come back with a lot more. Really enjoying the channel Thomas.
This is something that I have been battling with sometimes. I push myself to go out and get started. Most times it works and others I stay in. Great video and inspiration to do the same. Thanks!
Wow! That is a really great image. I love your enthusiasm, and I think it is what makes your videos so enjoyable. It's easy for vloggers to make everything seem like a trek up Everest and emphasize the hardships, but in the end you enjoy being in the landscape and it's never a waste - even without a photo to show for it. Great channel.
This is an excellent video!! Inspiring stuff...that smile on your face when the light broke, just priceless!!! At the end, what you said is correct - sometimes we just need to sit back , relax and enjoy the nature
Hey Tom, I get it. I drove three hours yesterday to get bucolic shot in the countryside where my folks grew-up. I missed the timing, but felt justified in the effort. The 5 liter Mustang GT was a soul soothing balm, rowing through the gears on the challenging country roads. We have to let ourselves be human and balance the "drive" with the occasional fail. You'll never dance unless you go to the party. Dance-on, Mike
Have one of them days far too often. But I always get up and go for a walk and take my camera... I don't always take pictures while I'm out but just getting out always makes things feel better... as you found out.
The more I watch the more I appreciate the journey. It's off to Utah next month and a short trip to Zion or Bryce Canyon. Fine job over-coming the midges.
I am SO glad you took that photo. It's beautiful. I feel like going out with Mr Canon but sometimes I can't make my mind up where or what I want to photograph so end up watching TV. Thanks Tom for more inspiration.
I totally understand you mate! Happens to me a lot of times as well. But just like you I just go out and wander around my city. And even if I don-t get any shot when I get back home I'm still happy! Thank you for the great videos!
Thank you for the great advice. I did not want to get out of bed this morning. I turned my tv over to RUclips and your video was the first one on there. After watching it I jumped out of bed and went out to capture some photos. I haven't looked at them yet. I am hoping that I have some great captures.
I can't wait to get out and shoot pictures. I am very new at it but I am loving it. I'm trying to learn the technical aspects but composition is already in the back of my mind when I take shots. Love it. Summer here in Sydney Aus is often very hot. Sometimes over 40 degrees celsius from midday until 4-5pm. Not much fun going out in that.
So happy to keep photography purely as an interest pursuing only personal projects that interest and with no feeling that the machine has to be fed. On the other hand as you said that expectation can also get you out the door to capture a magic shot; oh well.
I have the same problem , it lasts all summer long. The boring plain blue skies , hot weather and dry brush make me so unhappy. I totally lack any motivation. Autumn arrives and I feel so happy again
This is so inspiring, I have seasonal depression that hits me from October to January. I feel horrid, tired and no energy to go out and my photography isn't touched for quite some time. But as I've seen in this video, you don't know what you will find if you don't try. Loved the video!
Thomas, I've recently binge watched most of your videos and they are awesome. For me they are an inspiration and enlightening. It seems I pick up new ideas and new information with each video. Just wanted to take a moment to say thanks.
I´m with you. Summer always takes the extra effort. You have to start super early and wait really late for good light. The insects are in terror mode and for some reason my energylevel is down. Thanks for the inspiration. Perhaps i will be able to go out the next days.
I hate to pack for a trip. I hate it so much that I've thought, why not just hang around the house for the weekend. Once I am about five miles out on the hiway this wonderful feeling of having escaped sweeps over me. I remember one time right at sunset I pulled the car over to the side, got out and gave a big yell. Pure joy at being at a beautiful place and happy I fought off the temptation to give into the blah feeling that I needed to beat back.
Thanks for getting out Thomas and making great shots! For me it's always the opposite - always wanting to get out but with three small children it's just too difficult to find the time!
When I'm feeling this way I whip out the drone and start finding some aerial comps, try that! It is so much fun trying to figure out new and refreshing views of the landscape, keep it up Thomas!
Great Episode !! I know the feeling I do flooring for a living so it can be pretty labor intensive ... so sometimes the hardest part for me when I want to get out and shoot, is exactly like you said packing my bag and actually going out . but every time I do I'm so glad I did! Not to ramble on but I also appreciated when you said sometimes you just need to be in the moment ... that resonates with me. I'm a huge backpacker I love the outdoors, I just got back from Yosemite and as I know you know there's beauty at every turn sometimes its so much more satisfying sitting and enjoying the natural moment you placed yourself in as opposed to rushing to de-pack unload gear and trying to force a shot that prob isn't there anyway! Love the channel, inspired by your work, thank you !!
Thank you so much for this. I find myself having an issue with motivation more often than you but this really shows me that I need to get up and get out when I feel that way. Love your content Thomas! Thank you again.
Ah, Thrunton! I run regularly up there but Ive only ran along that path 4.44 once and stopped to look at those trees with the mossy stuff on. I've been meaning to go back with my gear to see what I can do but, as you would have seen, its a tricky sort of place regarding conditions.
Motivation can be tough to muster sometimes. But good on you for getting out. I have found that many of the times I don't want to go out end up being some of my best days.
With all the times that you inspire us...it's nice to see that we( your RUclips audience) inspire you to go out and get an image. Nice work and a fantastic image. Thank you.
Great as always. When I'm lacking motivation I always try and do something new or different. Mix it up. Occasionally I find something I like that wouldn't have found otherwise. Keep up the good work!
I know how you feel, I sometimes want to sell all my gear & then I go out take pic I'm happy with & wonder why I ever thought about packing it all in! I reckon it's a trait of people who are creative, that's what I tell myself anyway!
Thanks for making this video Tom, last Sunday I felt the same, had a rubbish shoot, felt totally unmotivated, and honestly considered putting all my camera gear on eBay and just walking away from it all. Glad I didn't though as Wednesday was a fantastic shoot. Nice to know I'm not the only one who gets days like this 😊
I think you've got to consider Thomas that you've been going at 100mph lately what with the Iceland workshops and other trips, so now when it appears to be a little quieter in your routine then your mind and body feels more inclined to laze around perhaps. And it needs to in order to recharge. So I wouldn't feel guilty or lazy, but sure sitting around does make you lethargic and so you did the right thing by forcing yourself out ... and now you have some fresh air in your lungs, some photos from the trip and of course another RUclips video to keep us extremely happy to be subscribers. Keep up the great work Thomas, you're doing terrific :-)
I've only just started taking an interest in photography and exactly like you said on the video, i was seeing loads of opportunities for shooting in that woods, good to know i'm on the right track and seeing the same sort of things as the seasoned snappers!
Have only just found your channel but is phenomenal! You've got the perfect balance of production-value and vlog-style shooting and a nice focus on your thought process as you go about getting your images. Keep up the awesome work!
Been feeling the same way lately, Thomas. I think for me it's been a product of too much free time and saying I'll get the kit out tomorrow over and over again. Going to get myself out on a hike this afternoon to scout locations for the eclipse tomorrow though. Best from West Virginia -Callum
Inspiring stuff Thomas. Stuck in these miserable Autumnal greys on the West Coast of Scotland (Argyll), waiting for the seasons to add the drama for me. Time to get off my backside and get out there anyway...
Another great video. I'm going through a can't be bothered spell at the moment thanks for the inspiration to just go and see what happens you never know
Hi Thomas. Agree with you about August in UK. Such a rubbish month. But - at least we have the heather and it is glorious. What a beautiful shot you captured. The colours are ab. stunning. So glad you went out. Know how you felt though. Think we all get like that sometimes.
Great video Thomas, I think we all have that problem sometimes I know I do and I always regret it when I don't get out, but sometimes it's just what it is. Great image though that light just came at the right time. Looking forward to your next video.👍👍👍👍
I'm a summer struggler, not helped my early shift (at a photo lab). At dawn I'm arriving or at work and in the evenings I'm tired and early to bed. Also the light at other times of the day is so harsh. Living on the Belgian coast in the summer there's always loads of people about too....I find myself yearning for the autumn.
Thank you for this motivational video. Have been feeling the same in the past days. Helped me a lot. Also ordered your calender, I am so excited! Greetings from Switzerland
You might not feel motivated Tom, but you do motivate and inspire us, been out on my bike with Canon DSLR and my GoPro, tried to get something thrown together (it was thrown) could not get audio to last long enough at the end, well cobbled. Keep you good work up.
I kind of watch your videos as a way of getting outdoors and shooting as weird as that sounds.
terry breedlove way to go mate!
Thank you :)
terry breedlove Hope it works out for you man , getting out and doing photography is therapy itself☺️.
TBI Symptoms are mostly temporary. Sorry you're going through it, but it will pass.
I was hit six time sin the back of the head with heavy metal object. My brain was shoved over 6 mm to the left. Very nice shot from this "found" outing. Looking forward to 2018's calendar!
The moment you showed that photo, it brought me to tears. Honestly. Knowing how it all started, knowing the story behind the image
Thank you for showing yourself natural and more like a human being Thomas. Feels very sincere. This is a nice breath after continuously watching most RUclipsrs, who always act ecstatic and psyched over everything. Thank you.
I know how you feel. I spent my whole Sunday just watch Thomas Heaton videos and n RUclips today.

I appreciate your honesty and sharing what many of us go through. Thanks for the encouragement and pushing through.

I need to get shot that everywhere, every time to meet, it is beautiful purple flowers. love your work, tried and images. Thank! Thomas...,

Really enjoying the channel Thomas.
I thought I am the only one that felt like this sometimes. Especially with that nice west european weather of Rain and clouds in exciting mixes.
IM SO LUCKY I CAME ACROSS YOU CHANNEL!! CANT STOP WATCHING. You are down to earth, hilarious, inspiring, and just fantastic to watch. Thank you!!!!
Your honesty is what makes this channel so inspiring. Thanks for telling it like it is!
As always - stunning views! Thank you for being so real and honest.
As always .... a lovely insight into your world Thomas .....

Thank you so much Thomas, I definitely know that feeling. But now, also I know, "next time I don't want to go out, I just go out anyway"!
You are very lucky living where you do Tom - great job, great image and another great vid. Keep it up!
Yep must be the time of year. Maybe the light as I've lost my photojoe this weekend also.
Great stuff Tom, my low point is July and I'm starting to lift now for autumn. Lovely light at the end of the shoot.
I've had that feeling more times than I'd care to admit! I often need a push to get me out of the door.
Thanks, Tom, glad this worked out. Lovely heather.
Thanks Thomas,I feel you're pain every day,I use you're channel as inspiration. Awesome as usual, thanks, Keep up the great work!
Thank you Thomas : this video may be the rejuvenation I need to get me out. Your image is beautiful.
Your walk back in the dark must have been interesting, especially in that forest!
Great stuff as usual Thomas - way to push through the dark skies - "Waiting for the light" - great quote! Cheers!
One of my favorite videos so far (and I have watched them all) - much because of the message it brings! :)
With all the times that you inspire us...it's nice to see that we( your RUclips audience) inspire you to go out and get an image. Nice work and a fantastic image. Thank you.
I was signed in to the wrong account. Loved the video.
It's like you just exhales art.. and it's amazing 💕 thanks for putting such great work out there!
Peace
Great motivation to get out and look at the world around us👍 We are up in the Bay for the bank holiday, camera in hand, fingers crossed ⛱🌤🌊
Been feeling the same way lately, Thomas. I think for me it's been a product of too much free time and saying I'll get the kit out tomorrow over and over again. Going to get myself out on a hike this afternoon to scout locations for the eclipse tomorrow though. Best from West Virginia

Inspiring stuff Thomas. Stuck in these miserable Autumnal greys on the West Coast of Scotland (Argyll), waiting for the seasons to add the drama for me. Time to get off my backside and get out there anyway...
😌 it's good to see it all worked out. Ur gains are our gains and seeing it unfolding is beautiful to watch 😊
Great photo tom we all need motivation to get out and go and shoot what we can or enjoy what we see
I love how I could relate to this so much. Thanks Thomas
Cool video and especially sick drone moves. Felt really down today and the video gave me a huge mood booster. Thanks Thomas!
I'm so glad it all turned out right in the end Thomas. Beautiful shots buddy.
