Love heather in early autumn in the Alps, if you have yellowish grass, the contrast is insane at the golden hour. If you like trees like that, you should definitely go to Australia. The eucalypts, especially mallee growing eucalypts (multi trunks) are gorgeous as a composition subject. Tasmania in particular is a favorite spot of mine, or the Australian Alps with the snow gums.
Hey Thomas. Great video, as usual. There's a great Scottish word that describes the conditions you encountered after the mist had lifted. It's 'dreich' and there's a reason why we have a word for it up here;-) Do not pronounce the 'ch' as a 'k'. Just try to clear the midges from your throat and you'll nail the pronunciation. The same goes for when you say loch, it's not a lock:-)
I love these adventures you take us on Tom. It’s interesting that colour is turning so early, but it means we can look forward to some great Autumn vlogs soon. I think you used the conditions and the flat light you had very well. You created great images with wonderful mood, that was perfect for the subject, I love the shapes those trees made. I can’t believe the fog disappeared so quickly, it was so thick when you first got up. Thanks again for sharing this mate!
I really like that horizontal photo of the tree. The bands of clouds in the sky combined with the tree and the heather make for a really solid shot! Solid video as usual!
Great to get out but the midges can be a right royal pain. However not long now until the colder weather and will be glad to see the back of them especially up here in Scotland.
Hi Thomas, as always loving the videos but what's happened to your two videos about your trip to Skye? Heading there later this month would love to watch them. Cheers.
For some reason I always find myself commenting after seeing one of your vids. They are just really really well constructed, and the images is always top notch. I'll probably be here commenting when you upload the autumn edition from the same place, with fog this time :) Best of luck out there! Ps, where is Monty nowadays? I miss that rugged little achiever!
Some leaves are starting to change, absolutely stoonin'! We videod a few aspens changing out in the States last weekend. Fall is on the horizon, and that should get every landscape photographer on the move.
Really love that second shot. I have also had some fun with the old midge-net; definitely a good investment. You can check it out for a laugh at this fetching fashion accessory at 17:22 of this video: ruclips.net/video/qXj5DJ63uNQ/видео.html
That ability to just walk away without taking a shot... I've got no idea... Great shots of the Birch trees, reminds be of the Aspens in Colorado. I LOL'd when you said "I know what you're thinking". Cheers Tom.
Superb as always Tom, the 2nd image is excellent but I really love the shape of the one you wanted to capture in the mist. Silver Birch make such good subjects don't they.👍 Many thanks for posting, take care and stay safe on your travels.🍀👌
Hi Tom, really enjoy your channel, unfortunately I think you watered down the down the shot in the 8 min. range by showing the perspective with the drone before hand. All is well. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
Another good video, thanks much. May I ask a question? About how many photos do you take when out photographing? You see so well disciplined, keeping your camera tucked away until you find "the" shot for your location. I struggle with taking far too many shots, and believe I do this due to my uncertainty of what I'm capturing. Would love to hear your thoughts on this subject. Again thanks so much for producing such good content.
Nice walk. Just careful with the gas fire direct on ground with high grass. You know, improvise a barrier/rock bed if available, an upturned frying pan or at least clear patch. Enjoy the videos.
Thomas, I was afeard you had crossed over to Isis with that head-gear... but I got over it! That tree will likely still be there when you return. I'll look forward to your next attempt. Thank-You, Mike
First time actually comenting, on the third go around on all your videos. Love all of them, learning all I can. Just started photography, so exciting and fun. Your work Simply Stunning. Now not only am I watching yours ,but Mr. Brendan van Son's also, does look funny in a hat.
Finally catching up after my trip to Yellowstone. Your leaves were turning a month early. Here it is the end of September and it's in the high 80's with no sign of Autumn color. Global Warming Weirdness?!
My Sundays And Wednesdays have taken over the TV with your Videos Thomas lol.. Yet again, Another fantastic Video, supurb images. Autumn cant come quick enough. Must say i had a little giggle when seeing you with the net around your face. Keep them coming Thomas and see you on the 15th :)
Another belter Thomas. You highlighted your common theme which crops up repeatedly throughout your videos about taking time to work out the composition and having the ability to say no, the light is no good, so I'm not taking the shot. Such an important lesson to get away from machine gun mode and one I am slowly taking on board. Quality not quantity. Marry that with KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid - and you are in a good place.
Curious that the season seems to be changing early there... Here in Pennsylvania, the month of August was *way* cooler than usual, and September mornings are downright chilly! I have been wondering if we are heading into a real brutal Winter season...
Sometimes, to get good separation between layers of mountains in the distance, I take my good 'ole 2 inch brush, and tap the photo while pushing up slightly, and then sweeping back and forth - just barely grazing the negative - and that gives the illusion of some happy mist.
I love the pace of your videos. It's such a nice break from other RUclipsr photographers (who I love too), but I get the feeling that you really savour each and every image. Really reminds me to slow down in my shooting and just appreciate where I am.
Great video again Thomas. I live just 30 minutes from where you filmed this and last year late Oct and early Nov the colours were at the best but as you suspect we could be a few weeks earlier this time around. Always videos to look forward to, keep em coming.
The quality of your videos recently have been top notch. Really taken your time to do B roll. I just hope someone gives you your own photography tv programme. You deserve it !
Thomas Heaton, Britain's answer to Deadpool. Lol. Loved the midge net. Loved the video, those birch trees was stunning. I know you like to do videos out in the field but is there a chance that you might do one on your post production techniques. I would like to know how much post you do and how much is done in camera.
Great video as ever and two beautiful images of the trees. Can you post a link to where you got the 'midgies net'? As a regular visit to the Outer Hebrides, this looks like manner from heaven!! Keep up the great work.
Love the second shot. The heather is a favourite of mine, such a beautiful colour. Loved the headnet. I have one. Think I got it in a pound shop. Looking forward to your fog tutorial because where I live every day is either foggy, misty or rainy.
Looks like you had a rough night there Tom :D I don't think you can blame the location, looks like a brilliant spot to put up your tent. Really like that second image, nicely done!
great video as always tom! by the way, Craghoppers do clothing that has insect repellent. I have brought a long sleeve tee from and so far so good! www.craghoppers.com/men/shop-by/technology/tech_nosilife/ p.s I am not sponsored by Craghoppers!
One thing I love about your videos is that you include and talk about the failed attempts or when things don't go your way. Thanks Thomas and keep up the great content.
I was sitting home, making excuses about the weather and after watching this, I'm moving my bottom to the beach to shoot shoot shoot! Maybe something will come out of this. Thanks, Tom for the motivation! Keep up the good work :)
again and again great and encouraging video Thomas ! could you explain what is the other differences between good image and great image except mist ? :)
Hello Thomas may I suggest a soft bush hat as it will keep the midge net of the face and will bend flat when you look through the eyepiece. Best regards, Allan.
mate, you need a lighter tent. Think that every time I see you setting up even though vango tents are a great starter (we took ours to Mongolia!), Get yourself a tarptent - lightweight luxury :)
It has been rather damp here in the northeastern United States also. We have seen signs of early foliage change north of us as well. Enjoy your videos, but first time commentator.
I think I would have gone up at night to shoot the two tents in that depression, with a small light in each. Love birch photos, and as always great outdoors.
Great video as usual, I love this ethereal atmosphere! One thing... Don't you think is quite dangerous to turn on a fire on such dry field? I see some grass on fire 😱
Was the tree in the distance at 3:32 where you eventually shot? I saw that as you were panning and thought that would be my destination. I'd be stoked if that was indeed the tree.
If you check his older videos you'll see he does quite a bit of research into planning shoots. It's up to you to find them, think of it as part of the challenge.
Thanks mate. I've just done a google search for quarries in the Lakes and I think this one is called Hodge Close :) I still wanna find that heather though! I'm desperate to get a heather shot before it all dies very soon. I might just go to the dales or moors. There's heather everywhere! :)
You're beginning to inspire me a bit. I love the attitude u have.
Shame about the fog / mist disappearing but you bagged a couple of wonderful shots Thomas.
Tony
Absolutely
You thought I was going to say Stunnin x
Hey Thomas. Great video, as usual. There's a great Scottish word that describes the conditions you encountered after the mist had lifted. The same goes for when you say loch, it's not a lock:-)
I'm guessing Brendan nearly shit himself when he saw a faceless Tom walking towards him!!
Is the silver birch on the top of Holme fell ?
Quality as usual even my partner and 11 yr old now sit and watch you channel with me on tv thank you
I love these adventures you take us on Tom. It’s interesting that colour is turning so early, but it means we can look forward to some great Autumn vlogs soon. I would love to see a collab between you and Thomas.
I 2nd this
I love your videos. You're like the Jamie Oliver of landscape photography.
Giulia Peddi don't insult the man!
Didn't mean it as an insult, just that they both have great enthousiasm!
This video is RAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW
First!
How many points do I get?
you get + 10 - 9 for announcing it for + 1
Hey bud....just a heads up, the music Stay Near appears to be by artist Luwaks. Loved the adventure
I sound like a broken record..but your vids are fantastic. And your music choice is supurb and lovely.
I really like that horizontal photo of the tree. The bands of clouds in the sky combined with the tree and the heather make for a really solid shot! Solid video as usual!
A bit of a Kendo Nagasaki moment there with the midge net. Loved the collaboration series with you and Brendan
Great to get out but the midges can be a right royal pain. However not long now until the colder weather and will be glad to see the back of them especially up here in Scotland.
Hi Thomas, as always loving the videos but what's happened to your two videos about your trip to Skye? Heading there later this month would love to watch them. Cheers.
Hi, for some reason they don't seem to work on my android devices but they work fine on a desktop.
Barry Maytum Hi, thank you Barry I've always used iPad so I'll give desktop a go, have to be at work though, bummer.
Tom: FYI The Amazon link to the g5x no longer showing the camera, just bags.
Dont know if it changed in a week, but its showing camera for me.
Living in the Australian outback for a few years a head net was one of the most essential pieces of gear, great video!
Why did you stop uploading to Flickr or am I just not seeing the updates?
So you got plenty of i-midges ?
For some reason I always find myself commenting after seeing one of your vids. They are just really really well constructed, and the images is always top notch. I'll probably be here commenting when you upload the autumn edition from the same place, with fog this time :) Best of luck out there! Ps, where is Monty nowadays? I miss that rugged little achiever!
Absolutely stunning!! 👍 Two lovely friends ever try, congratulations!!!!!
Some leaves are starting to change, absolutely stoonin'! We videod a few aspens changing out in the States last weekend. Fall is on the horizon, and that should get every landscape photographer on the move.
Thanks, Tom, lovely video. I really enjoyed your collaborations with Brendan. Beautiful countryside-that heather is amazing. Cheers, Bob.
Good stuff! Best not to camp in sheltered dips, you will be eaten alive with midges - but hell, you'll know that now. :)
Really love that second shot. I have also had some fun with the old midge-net; definitely a good investment. You can check it out for a laugh at this fetching fashion accessory at 17:22 of this video: ruclips.net/video/qXj5DJ63uNQ/видео.html

Putting the image in a square crop just makes all the difference. Lovely picture Thomas. 👍👍
It is funny how uk is "early" into fall but in finland we are at least same amount weeks behind of yearly schedule.
Superb as always Tom, the 2nd image is excellent but I really love the shape of the one you wanted to capture in the mist. Silver Birch make such good subjects don't they.👍
Many thanks for posting, take care and stay safe on your travels.🍀👌

It's working. My shooting rate has gone up massively since watching you and i'm getting better results. Thanks :-)
Another belter Thomas. You highlighted your common theme which crops up repeatedly throughout your videos about taking time to work out the composition and having the ability to say no, the light is no good, so I'm not taking the shot. Hey Thomas, great video and pictures !!!! Can you maybe do a explanation video how you get those black and white images to be that great :)
Sometimes, to get good separation between layers of mountains in the distance, I take my good 'ole 2 inch brush, and tap the photo while pushing up slightly, and then sweeping back and forth - just barely grazing the negative - and that gives the illusion of some happy mist.

Some lovely images once again Tom. I had forgotten it was Heaton Wednesday. You have just brightened up a dreary day
Great video again Thomas. I live just 30 minutes from where you filmed this and last year late Oct and early Nov the colours were at the best but as you suspect we could be a few weeks earlier this time around. Always videos to look forward to, keep em coming.

Dear Thomas, thank you for this beautiful calendar ! Congratulations!

I know you like to do videos out in the field but is there a chance that you might do one on your post production techniques. I would like to know how much post you do and how much is done in camera.
Love your videos Tom but bought your midge net was making you look very grim reaper especially with the scythe (tripod) over your shoulder mate
Great video as ever and two beautiful images of the trees. Can you post a link to where you got the 'midgies net'? As a regular visit to the Outer Hebrides, this looks like manner from heaven!! Keep up the great work.
Just got to the last bit of your video, where the fog had just vanished . . . my wife walked in and said 'he looks knackered'. :)
When Midge's attack! Who was that masked man? Thanks for braving the bugs to bring us our video fix.
Love the showcasing of the trees before showing the shot. Trees are one of my favourite things to shoot. Nicely done......again :)
great video as always tom! by the way, Craghoppers do clothing that has insect repellent. I have brought a long sleeve tee from and so far so good!
www.craghoppers.com/men/shop-by/technology/tech_nosilife/
p.s I am not sponsored by Craghoppers!
One thing I love about your videos is that you include and talk about the failed attempts or when things don't go your way. Thanks Thomas and keep up the great content.
Really enjoy your videos. I shot Medium Format Film but it does not matter with your vids. You inspire.
Great shots Tom but I was thinking the first image was going to be in colour.
Got photo anyway.
Thanks for another great video. Stay safe.
That's why I bring my biggest E Juice Vapouriser and blow in front of the lens ! :)
Thomas, loved the horizontal shot with the birch on the left! Absolutely stunning!
I was sitting home, making excuses about the weather and after watching this, I'm moving my bottom to the beach to shoot shoot shoot! Maybe something will come out of this. Thanks, Tom for the motivation! Keep up the good work :)
Hey Tom. Love your work!
I'm in the Lake District last week of October. Do you still think they'll be colour in them there woods?
again and again great and encouraging video Thomas ! could you explain what is the other differences between good image and great image except mist ? :)
It looks like the same area that you've travelled to before, the place with the grey wall 1:40
The moment you mentioned the tree you are going to capture, I knew it will be b&w square frame.😀😀😀
Hello Thomas may I suggest a soft bush hat as it will keep the midge net of the face and will bend flat when you look through the eyepiece. Best regards, Allan.
Great video, at least you had a good time being out. Check out my waterfall landscape video and tell me what you think.
mate, you need a lighter tent. Think that every time I see you setting up even though vango tents are a great starter (we took ours to Mongolia!), Get yourself a tarptent - lightweight luxury :)
Outstanding! The monochrome of the birch was stunning! Too bad you missed the mist but will look forward to seeing you get it in autumn.
Hi Tom, I'm looking for some outdoor hiking trousers and was wondering what ones you have on and do you rate them? Strange question I know, thanks
It has been rather damp here in the northeastern United States also. We have seen signs of early foliage change north of us as well. Enjoy your videos, but first time commentator.
#AskTH How do you use the histogram to shoot great pictures? And how do you organize your pictures when you come home with a camera full of pictures?
Video 10/10!!! What about this comment...XD
Love the birch tree shots! Really Stunning! Love how patient you are, sign of a true artist!
Can I use a non-weatherproof lens and dslr in foggy/misty areas without damaging them?
Thank you for your inspirational talent and enthusiasm Thomas! Super beautiful images!
Lovely images and beautiful location and, as always, an interesting video.
I think I would have gone up at night to shoot the two tents in that depression, with a small light in each. Love birch photos, and as always great outdoors.
Another great video just a shame that the fog lifted but unfortunately you can't have everything.
How do you handle walking with your tripod on your shoulder? For me this always at one point adds some pain to the muscles.
Great as always, nice to see one new aproach regarding to music , I like it, keep up, greatings from Portugal ☺
So when you arrive to Israel? We got some great landscapes and great food :)
That quarry seems like after a good drop of rain, it might have good opportunities
what should I say.., Amazing! Thank! Thomas....,
Thomas, thoughts... Do you ever try to shoot for B&W photos on overcast days?
I would say that a good image is a 6/10 and a great image is an 8/10
Why the lonely tree was in black and white... Why not the purple flowers
Great video as usual, I love this ethereal atmosphere! One thing... Don't you think is quite dangerous to turn on a fire on such dry field? I see some grass on fire 😱
That's what I was wondering! I have never seen a gas "stove" like that and kept thinking "shouldn't you put it on a rock"?!
Was the tree in the distance at 3:32 where you eventually shot? I saw that as you were panning and thought that would be my destination. I'd be stoked if that was indeed the tree.
A tad bit of brokeback mountain 😂 great pics Thomas 👍
What would you say is the average distance you travel on this type of trip ?
I want to buld a website on squarespace but can you or somone els explain it a litle more please ?
I've run out of things to say about your videos.
Try - Absolutely Stunning
Inspiring. You really have a gift in sharing your photography.
You should add the exact locations in the description! It would be greatly appreciated! :)
If you check his older videos you'll see he does quite a bit of research into planning shoots. It's up to you to find them, think of it as part of the challenge.
The quarry is at Coniston, copper mining was done there and on sunny days the water is a lovely green colour.
Thanks mate. I've just done a google search for quarries in the Lakes and I think this one is called Hodge Close :) I still wanna find that heather though! I'm desperate to get a heather shot before it all dies very soon. I might just go to the dales or moors. There's heather everywhere! :)
Any idea where the silver birches and the wild camp site are??
I'm pretty sure that is Yew Tree tarn at 2:50 so around that area. I think to the west of Yew Tree Tarn. :)
I enjoy every Video !
Thank you for the constant content !
Very cool video. Misty Silver Birch shot is now on my list!
Simplicity is divinity! Nice images Thomas.
Please can anyone advise where in the lakes the Birch tree shots were taken ?
