Aw, the great Ella Fitzgerald turned 61 in 1978 and still sounded great here with the wonderful Toni Tennille. Ella retained her beautiful and strong voice right up to the age of 70, or so - after this, she STILL sounded pretty good. An amazing lady! Cheers and thanks for the great post!
I sang backup for Toni in the casinos in the 70s. I lived in Reno NV. Daryl and Toni lived in Washoe valley. I went to UNR and sat between them as they wrote the backup for me. My sister-in-law was their vet tech for their pugs.
@@scottmcneely1927 You never saw Toni in one of her live concerts. That might have changed your opinion about her. One snippet from You Tube doesn't allow her to show of what she is capable.
Great job, Ladies...!!! Super diction, phrasing, tone and perfect pitch. Powerful voices that project and are ALWAYS in tune...!!!! SuperStars: Ella and Toni....!!! Thanks for posting this.😀😀😀
Two classical singers from different eras in a beautiful duo together. Toni has an amazing, timeless voice and to match it with Ella's voice is no mean feat!
The Captain and Tennille was a great combination. But when Tennille went solo, she blew me away. One of the most underrated singers in the business! Great selection of music. "If I Should Lose you," one of many. Oh, yes, "Here's That Rainy Day." Can't get any better.
Jay Young I agree with you completely. The only thing is that as a single person she has no presence if she does anything but sing. It 's sad to see her try to carry a conversation with the audience. Love her music just the same! It would take some talent to carry your own with Ella Fitzgerald if only for a few minutes! I'd like to see her sing with Cleo Laine!
artistphx And speaking of Laine, how is she doing these days and where? And isn't her husband/close music associate in heaven? Bring me up to speed! P.S. What's your attitude on Leslie Uggams, one of the greats of yore?
I liked Tennille's voice generally, but often found that she came in a bit under pitch in her performances. But, I really feel like she upped her game with Ella as her duet partner. Would have been great to hear her record more material like this over the years. Considering how talented she was, her recording output was pretty slim, sadly.
Two QUEENS performing together, and I watched this back in the day. I've ALWAYS had a special appreciation for Toni's voice. If I'd been born a man I would have done ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to sweep her off her feet and give her the undying love and devotion she deserved. And you know there were men that tried to gain her attention, but she remained steadily devoted to Daryl. The heart wants what the heart wants.
These two wonderful voices blend sooooo well. Toni just loved it the way Ella got into "Stormy Weather." Ella one of my very favorite singers. In my top five female vocalists list. Toni is great. My favorite of hers "Do That To Me One More Time."
Wow the talent ! I often wounder what ever happened with her son Ray Brown jr . I worked with him back in the early 90s in Wenatchee , wa he also was an entertainer &a Mariners fan . . Hell of a nice guy..
When I liked "Love Will Keep Us Together", I rightly thought it should have ended with that. I'm sure Ella is rolling her eyes inside. But she is too much of a professional to express it.
Wow, I don't remember her much, and I was young at the time so this it's interesting to realize she was not some sort of novelty act, she could sing ( Tenille I am referring to, anyone with some basic knowledge of music should know Ella :)
Toni didn't know it, but she was my girlfriend for a number of years. What drew me in was her vocals, and she had great hair! Captain was awesome, too. I wanted to be as cool as he was.
Excellent performances here. One year later (1980) Ella would team up with Karen Carpenter on a medley of standards arranged by Nelson Riddle. It was just a touch classier.
The thing I hated about her show was she NEVER allowed the guest to sing by themselves. She always had to get her butt in the way and not allow the guest to have their own moment.
Um no not true...guests always did a solo performance as well then also usually a duet with her or her and the Captain...in this special Ella did a solo before she and Toni did their medley together

Absolutely beautiful !

WOW !!! watched Ella and Karen C but this is just as wonderful
These women could sing the phone book and make it sound enthralling. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
like many others have mentioned Toni is very underrated she holds her own with Ella, what more can you say
No, she does not, not even a past her prime Ella.
@@scottmcneely1927 You never saw Toni in one of her live concerts. That might have changed your opinion about her. One snippet from You Tube doesn't allow her to show of what she is capable.
Toni was a superstar ❤
i think toni was a contralto like our karen
There was only one Ella & there will never be another. She was amazing & had a voice of an angel
Great job, Ladies...!!! Super diction, phrasing, tone and perfect pitch. Powerful voices that project and are ALWAYS in tune...!!!! SuperStars: Ella and Toni....!!! Thanks for posting this.😀😀😀

Huge Ella fan. Toni is brilliant as well
Goodness!!!! Their voices just compliments with each other!!!!
it takes a VERY confident chick singer to invite ella for a duet. beautiful set. i wish they sang longer bits from each song.
That’s for sure ! Toni held her own with Ella

Dame Cleo still performs some, I believe. Mr. Dankworth died awhile back. Sad, they were a nice couple.
artistphx Sorry to bother you. But did their children go into the business?
artistphx Wiki doesn't give any info. Sorry.
I knew Toni Tennille could sing, write music, and look good, but wow!! I'm in love to a picture of the past!!! Ella must have been impressed too!
I agree
Irreplaceable talented duo ❤❤❤❤
I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LUCKY to be able to see Ella during this period of her career. I was still a teenager! YIKES. She was still AMAZING!
Ella's a legend, yet so down to earth and humble. Toni has such a rich voice. Wish this were longer.
Toni is amazing! Where was I the last 45 years?
Amazing duet. Loved it. Love both ❤ 🎉
I've never heard Tennille sing like this. I'm loving it.

Simply beautiful. What can you say. Two greats right there. I love it! 😌👏👏👏

l love their great voices!
Ella is a cut above the crowd so unique....

very soothing sultry and soulful you go girls!

Wow the talent ! I often wounder what ever happened with her son Ray Brown jr . I worked with him back in the early 90s in Wenatchee , wa he also was an entertainer &a Mariners fan . . Hell of a nice guy..
I had never seen this before. Very nice.
Wawoooo!!! Maravillosas las dos!!! 😍🤩💕💕👍👏👏👏
Wow. Amazing!
Ella still had a great voice at 70.
she was 61 at that time.
Wow, Toni looks GREAT in that outfit, not sure she has ever looked better.
true! although she also looked amazing in a long pink sparkly sequined dress she wore in concert when she sang "Do That to me One More Time".
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Toni looks awesome in anything!!!
They both look great here - and sound even better!
Wow.
Perfect Combination!
Fantastic! 👏👏👏👏

TONI’s JACKET IS TAILORING AT ITS FINEST!!!
ELLA,ELLA, AND ELLA AND TONI TENNILLE IS A WONDERFUL SINGER
When I liked "Love Will Keep Us Together", I rightly thought it should have ended with that. I'm sure Ella is rolling her eyes inside. But she is too much of a professional to express it.
Wow, I don't remember her much, and I was young at the time so this it's interesting to realize she was not some sort of novelty act, she could sing ( Tenille I am referring to, anyone with some basic knowledge of music should know Ella :)
oh Toni, if I was only 20 years older... You are a wonderful phenomenon
Fun arrangement!
GRANDES LAS DOS. BONITO DUO.
Nothing but class
Ella and Toni: we are over the top of the world ! MV
Toni has never looked better than she did here.
Toni has a real woman's hair style here..She's beautiful / hot
Toni Tennille.............whata babe!
This is actually pretty good!!!
That woman is gorgeous!!
Ella is in a class of her own.
WOW
Wow.
Wow that Jewell!!
Toni didn't know it, but she was my girlfriend for a number of years. What drew me in was her vocals, and she had great hair! Captain was awesome, too. I wanted to be as cool as he was.
I gotta go listen to louis prima and keeley smith now
🎶🫶🎶🍾🍷
Did Bob do these tops ? Looks like his signature
toni is a really good singer. but ella is the best!
The great Ella and then there was Tennille.
Excellent performances here. One year later (1980) Ella would team up with Karen Carpenter on a medley of standards arranged by Nelson Riddle. It was just a touch classier.
Ella and Karen Carpenter were also magical (& not as animated)!
Ni, na, Nu, No NICE.
zip up that shirt girl
Yep, she is gorgeous, but flat chested. Hey I’m not perfect either, close but no. Toni is one sexy lady. One of my favorites.
I much prefer the Karen Carpenter /Ella Fitzgerald medley.
Who cares.
Whatever! Toni is super fantastic!
The Andy Williams show was the same way. he never let his guests sing by themselves, he always sang duet with them.
If you didn't like her show, you didn't have to watch it. The whole point of duets was to do something different for the audience, and have fun.
Mrs Tennille needs to take a step back here
But then again , doesn’t everyone
Amazing!
