Sadly, I was not familiar with this guitarist. But I am now. Yes monster guitarist and cool dude. The Angel case story is pretty cool as well having seen them in the 70's a couple times.
Honestly GNR has never done it for me but having said that this guy is just a smoking player! Really nice tone and great phrasing! Back in the day I bought a 50-watt 2x12 Hiwatt combo from a buddy. It had the el34s and the speakers were Fane ceramic magnets speakers and I got to tell you man that amp was absolutely killer! It came right from England so we had to double up on the fuses and mucked around with the power cord but once we got it shorted out I think that's probably the finest and I've ever heard! Super articulate and anything past 7 on the volume just created this grind that was glorious!
Em.... Listen to how Greg Koch or Marty Friedman play guitar... Suddenly but pretty much predictably "this guy" is gonna become a pile of shit in your eyes.... Hundred miles ahead of Slash tho
I use a Laney GH100L since the late 90s and the tone I get from that amp is just divine to my ears... Can't see myself without it despite all the techs out there.
I had Sound City 120 back in the Eighties. It sounded phenomenal for clean stuff . . . in the store. But that was the last time it sounded that good. I once did a fairly extensive taste test at high volume between it and my early 70s Marshall 50-watt, and there really was no comparison. The SC sound had much in common with a Fender. The Marshall was nice and smooth, whereas the SC was bright and crunchy, and a bit harsh. But as always, "your mileage may vary," as the saying goes.
Funny, I'm actually reading a book about Angel right now so the Hiwatt is extra interesting. And 200 watts of Hiwatt power??? Hope you're playing the Forum, lol!!! So good.
He has a particular fast, ascending chromatic lick that must be a go-to for him. Pretty cool. I Like seeing dudes dedicated to vintage vibes. Most (like me) stop at Fender and Marshall, maybe Vox.
Phil X does something similar but much better. It’s one of his signature licks. It’s like Richard is doing an imitation and when you hear the original it’s like “yep, there it is”
I played in a band in the St. Louis area back in the late 70s, and our lead guitarist bought a Marshall Plexi Super Lead from Swing City Music in Edwardsville, IL (Fast Ed’s old store). This Marshall also once belonged to Punky Meadows. The flight case hade the Angel logo painted on it. I wonder if Punky lost or traded some of his gear in St. Louis? The Hiwatt sounds killer . . . so do the others. I love your playing. It speaks to me.
Remember all of jimmy pages best live tomes which get credited to Marshall were actually a 1969 custom built hiwatts and his tome was never as good when he switched to Marshall. Listen to mid 69 to December 71. The cabs are Marshall but the heads are Hiwatt .
Great collection. G&R epic band! Saw them live in their prime in 1997 Mexico City palacio de los deportes and the opening band was Blind Melon! Amazing concert 🎵 Will never forget the oxygen machine Axel Rose had to use between songs which was projected onto the video screen
I consider this a reference video and will go back and watch it whenever I think my Helix sounds pretty good.
Oof. I felt this.
Nice guy and an absolute monster guitarist.
criminally under rated
Sadly, I was not familiar with this guitarist. But I am now. Yes monster guitarist and cool dude. The Angel case story is pretty cool as well having seen them in the 70's a couple times.
Richard Fortus .... IS my favorite guitar player. I love his style. His passion for the guitar. He guitar style, his tone. And that Gretch !
wow! very sorry to hear that.
Yeah, you need to get out more
RF is the definite guitar hero of this era -- not many that are as well-rounded and complete as Richard...
One of my all-time favs...
A legend. I've seen him live a couple times now and it's always a treat. Tasty riffs & impeccable timing
This is rock tone. Just perfect
Thanks for watching!!
That is one of the most delicious Telecasters I have ever seen, and I've been looking at Telecasters since maybe 1959 ...
That might be the nicest Tele I’ve ever seen.
The essence of rock and roll attitude. Great old amps, what a treat and cool playing from Richard who’s not afraid of a bit of treble here
That Tele though 🔥
Was about to comment the same thing. Just perfect color, from body to pick guard to dot inlays. Awesome
Ya she issss purrdddyyyy
I came hear to post this exact same comment
Either that gretch is a xxl version or he is on the small side.
My goooooood what a super teleeeeeeeeeee
Hiwatt owner here
Super awesome sounds
I play a Bass 100 with a Warwick 410
Super dense and brightness coming from it
Love Hiwatt guitar sound
Oh my gosh...that beautiful Tele!!!
Yeah, that Kelly really stood out for me. It’s in a unique spot in the array of tones I’ve heard.
Love that Richard throws "the Rocker" in there as one of his go to riffs........Slainté buddy☘
Love his production on Furs Made of Rain and work with Love Spit Love

Not a gnr fan??
Em.... Listen to how Greg Koch or Marty Friedman play guitar... Suddenly but pretty much predictably "this guy" is gonna become a pile of shit in your eyes.... Hundred miles ahead of Slash tho
Damn, the Rocker by Thin Lizzy, FAN FOR LIFE !!!
My god, that Kelly amp sounds so great. It’s so warm ❤️
I use a Laney GH100L since the late 90s and the tone I get from that amp is just divine to my ears... Can't see myself without it despite all the techs out there.
I know he’s known for the Gretsch these days…but damn that Orange double bound tele looks AND sounds killer.
My favorite "vintage amps" are those old Acoustic bass amps. I have a 140 and 450 and they're absolutely monstrous!
Fortus is a god, underrated as fuck...best thing to happen to GNR since Izzy.
Easily the best guitarists to play that “position” since Izzy. Gilby and others are solid but didn’t do it for me
Tele sounds killer!!!!
Holy crap that Kelly sounds amazing
Nice. This guy is cool.
Love how fuzzy the Park sounds. The Carls sound killer too. Wow the Music City too. Okay maybe it's just him haha
A lot of that tone is in richards amazing playing
I like that organic vintage sound. The Kelly sounded the best imo.
My Lordddduh. Carlsbro. Crazy how cool they all are. 🤙😊
Goodstuff! Richard's such a cool dood!! 🤘
Thanks for watching!! 🤘🤘
Big Punky Meadows fan here. So cool that is some of his gear. 😃👍🏻
Amazing dude.
My god that telecaster. It’s BEAUTIFUL 😍
Think he's spilt bourbon on it a bit. Great looks
I know. It's my favourite colour - reddy orange, and I would trade in my 2007 ash US tele and give him a packet of biscuits for it
That tele’s sound is unreal
I'm sure it's a combo of the guitar, the cab, and the mic. But goddamn that Carlsboro sounds incredible!
Totally!
Great guitar player! Love Richard Fortus.
Finally I heard a note from richard 4tus I can rest my ears now! Iykyk
EXATLY how rock n roll guitar should sound like😍😍😍
FYI The bottom inputs of vintage Hiwatts are the "hotter" ones & have much more gain!
all excellent. but the carlsbro
wins my ear test
thanks, great video.
Thank you!
All I know is that it gives me great pleasure to see a Rockstar with a nose the same size as mine. Love you brother 🤣
Note how the Gretsch and the Tele are void of "High Gain Pickups", and he is not using an overdrive pedal, in front of those amps!!
Gotta appreciate other Humble Pie fans. Props!
Man I love kt88s so much
AWESOME
Less is not more, more is more
I always hear people say GnR isn’t all that. It’s like, have you not heard Appetite for Destruction? It smokes your favorite album.
Great video! Love Richard's playing. Cheers
Thanks!!
Hell yeah, Fortus is one hell of a guitarist
@:32seconds vintage Thin Lizzy ♥
There nothing like that fiesta red tele !!!!
That Sound City and Carlsboro sound amazing to my ears. Loved this video 👍🎸
Thank you!!

This guy's got some balls to be playing a cranked 200w amp w/ 4x12 without protection.
He had a condom on. You just couldn’t see it.
Pardon?
It's OK, its on standby.
He spent so much money on the guitars and amps he couldn’t ever afford a strap :’(
😢
I know a guy who will not use a guitar strap period. I find it hilarious watching him try to strum standing up with no strap
He doesn't like strap ones ....
It's all about those "strappy" tones, am I right, lol?
Meaby he’s affraid a strap would cause loss of tone.. 😆
I’m stealing some of his licks right now…
How loud does a 200 watt Hiwatt have to be to breakup like that? Jet engine levels, I would imagine. (Glorious nonetheless).
Get the ear plugs!!
At this moment in time, there isn't 1 single Music City amplifier for sale on Reverb. From the sound of that last amp, I would've been a buyer.
Funny, I'm actually reading a book about Angel right now so the Hiwatt is extra interesting. And 200 watts of Hiwatt power??? Hope you're playing the Forum, lol!!! So good.
What's it called?
whoa the tele at 0:35
The Kelly sounds awesome !

@@abrackas1 Richard is an imitation
its great that n England the amps that he loves ( not the hiwatt or park ) are actually affordable .
Would love to see a vid about that les paul he bought ..
I loved all six amps. Wrap them up to go; thanks!
I have KT88 tubes in my JCM900 100amp Marshall stack . They boom 💥
Amazing!!!!!!
That Thin Lizzy rocker noodle on the tele was nice through the hiwatt
Well spotted!

magic sam! holy!

THANK YOU!

I think he used the Hiwatt to play ramble on in the it might get loud movie. Great tone
Love the Park 👍
Great collection. G&R epic band! Saw them live in their prime in 1997 Mexico City palacio de los deportes and the opening band was Blind Melon! Amazing concert 🎵 Will never forget the oxygen machine Axel Rose had to use between songs which was projected onto the video screen
Guns did not play any shows in 1997
- How loud do you play?
- What?
- HOW LOUD DO YOU PLAY?!
- WHAT?!
Damn that “Kelly” sounds unbelievable. That “Park” is dope too!”
Right!? Thanks for watching!!
That Carlsbro head sounded great dialed back!
Good 2 See he’s rocking the 420 Eyes
00:33 Thin Lizzy the rocker?
Wow the Sound city had some thick mids. The Music City was great too.
Thanks for watching!!
thin lizzy riff hell yeah greeting from ireland
The Kelly was awesome!
The Kelly and Carlsboro we're my favorite
Match made in heaven.
Richard es un capo, tono y gusto de primera; gran trabajo, muy interesante la entrevista.
anyone know the song at 1:54
Never new most of these existed. Only if I had a time machine
That Carlsbro... Wow.
Anyone who says their Kemper, Helix or Axe sounds like a real amp need to watch this video.
Yeah O.K, I liked em all, but the Music City had "something", you would put some reverb or echo on it and just go ballistic
is the music city actually a Selmer amp?
I wonder what he's pushing the front end of these amps with? Considering the guitars and amps shown he is probably using a Klon serial #00001.
Awesome
What’s the song he’s playing at 1:54?
That's what I'm after knowing too. I've heard it a bunch of times, think Bukovac did a lesson on it, can't remember what it was called.
Nice idol
Oh THAT Telecaster………wow
Good time to buy big©
How cool would it be to just hang with him one afternoon and have a blues jam? I’ll bet he’s got tons of epic rock stories too!
Izzy Stradlin and Slash were the guitarists for GnR.
He came later. Fantastic player
How loud was it in the room that day?
We are still recovering lol
@@chicagomusicexchange you guys are gonna go deaf. Once that happens you will never be able to hear good tone again.
When big boutique amps come back (and they will)…this guy will be laughing all the way to the bank..
Gretsch is awesome!
is there any 300 watt amp?
GLAD IT HAS MY NAME ON IT.
00:00 - 00:01 though we were gonna get the Bret Hart entrance theme
