My maternal grandmother (I called her Granny) came to America from Ireland in her mid-teens. I’m close to 80 and she died when I was 10, but I remember sitting on her lap and the two of us rocking away on her wooden rocking chair. She would tell me little stories that she had learned as a child. That was when her brogue took over. She’d dance for me too. It was a wonderful magical time. I was one of six grandchildren and I knew that I was her favorite, although she never said it. Then one day my mother told me that she had died and my wonderful magical time died that day too.
She’s in MA and I live in NC, but whenever I travel there I stop at a store and buy something to put on her grave, usually an angel figurine. The older I’ve gotten, the more I miss her.
She was barely 5’ tall and her hair hadn’t been cut in decades; my mother would use a curling iron and somehow fashioned it into a crown sort of hairdo. I remember her dancing and stories like it was yesterday. I miss my Granny.

What a sweet and poignant story.
No doubt you do miss your granny,
And I wish I had known her myself!

Probably a more realistic version of what Irish dancing was really like - just a fun evening out.

Irish dancing can take many forms: competitive, ceili, and traditional. As a dancer who does all three, they are all fun, but the traditional Ceili and jig step are the best.
      Sincerely,
      An Irish Dancer

Agreed, some of the Americanised Riverdance has its place in theaters but is being passed of as Irish dance when its is mostly hybrid tap , and other influences. Over exaggerated high kicks with more in common with Gymnasium than dance floor.. alas the word is that this so called style is being rammed into dancing students in Ireland . So sad to see our culture being destroyed . It has become a farcical money racket.

@@helensaunders99 if you are asserting that some of the drivel being shoved down our necks with fake tanned aotomatons trying to kick themselves in their faces as dance , you are also delusional.

This is real irish dancing ,the real thing ,costumes ,live music, not the basterised American version we see now ,with gaudy being, very expensive costumes ,wigs ,sock s etc etc ,private lessons ,irish dance was handed on in the home and school and local parish events, its all about money now ,normal kids of working class people can't afford classes ,the GAA should reintroduce ,classes in the local halls for every young child ,and fees,s to suit ,bring it back to its roots

The super short clip that got cut off, or the one after that? I actually have been to this place with similar performances. The songs played are the same, but are extraordinary. Love the main guy... hilarious.

I know you asked a few weeks back but look up ' The Glasgow Reel' for the 3rd dance, if you haven't found it yet. (one of my personal favourites!) Hope it helps 👍😁
