I live in the upper midwest and as a kid, I found around 20 of the old 1940's USGS survey reference point markers over the years. We had 3-wheelers plus bailed township and county section line roadways every summer) What was interesting is once that I figured out the grid pattern I noticed many more were missing either due to removal or possibly having been silted under over the years.
