In 2013, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands stepped down and handed the throne to her son, Willem Alexander. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died at the age of 96 and her son, Charles III inherited the throne. And on January 14th, 2024, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicated in favor of her son, Frederik X. In just over 10 years, the world has gone from three accomplished, popular and long reigning Queens Regnant to zero. That’s right, there are no female monarchs anywhere in the world. The future may be female, but not in the archaic system of hereditary monarchy. However there are several female heirs waiting in succession lines to be the next great Queen regnant. Let’s take a look at which monarchies even allow women to occupy their thrones, and count down from those which will have to wait a few generations before getting a female sovereign, to those which are just one heartbeat, or abdication away from welcoming the World’s next Queen Regnant.
11. Luxembourg - No women in direct succession
10. Bhutan - Sonam Yangdento, 3rd in line, cadet
9. Tonga - Princess Halaevalu, Princess Nanasipau’u and Princess Salote, all cadet
8. The United Kingdom & Commonwealth Realms - Princess Charlotte, 3rd in line, cadet
7. Monaco - Princess Gabriella, 2nd in line, cadet
6. Denmark Princess Isabella, 2nd in line, cadet
5. Norway - Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 2nd in line, direct succession
4. Spain - Leonor, Princess of Asturias, heir to the throne
3. The Netherlands - Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange, heir to the throne
2. Belgium - Princess Elisabeth, heir to the throne
1. Sweden - Crown Princess Victoria, heir to the throne, Princess Estelle, 2nd in line, direct succession
Wild Cards:
Andorra - Could have elected Princess any time, next election 2027
Thailand - King Rama X will name heir, Princess Bajrakitiyabha is a contender

Fun fact. There has been a Queen Regnant consistently on a throne of Europe of since Isabella II accession as Queen of Spain up until Margrethe II abdication this year in 2024 of Denmark.
What about Leonor, the daughter of the actual king of Spain?
@@AndreaColombo-fx1wh Felipe's relatively young for reigning monarchs. He may hold on for thirty or more years.
You forget Queen Maria II of Portugal who became Queen in 1826. Seven years before Queen Isabel II of Spain ascended the throne.

Margrethe: *abdicates*
Harald: "Nah, I'm going out like Lizzie"
Well his is in the line of succession for the UK.
@@chrisgeenadriver1631 exactly what I was thinking lol
I'm guessing that Norwegians are probably ashamed that their King's eldest daughter is a pseudoscientific clairvoyant who hangs around with shamans and conmen especially given that Norway is a country prides itself on being a world leader in science, technology, and education...
Well, Harald's grandma was a British princess, so eh.
@chrisgeenadriver1631 I guess most royals are, because they are all related. At least the European ones.
You commented that Wallis' "two divorces and Nazi sympathies made her an unacceptable queen." I would argue that Edward's pro-German and fascist proclivities made him an unacceptable king...
Wallis gets the blame, but in truth, the British government needed him out of there one way or another.
Good point and well said.
And her name is spelled "Wallis." This seems to be a very common mistake among Commenters all over RUclips. Don't know why. Her name has been all over the history books for almost 90 years. But then again, we all know about King Edward VIII's famous great-grandmother Queen Viktooryah.
At least George VI was not a Nazi sympathizer. It can be argued that he saved the British monarchy by staying in London during the Blitz, where other monarchs would have fled.
@@markmh835 Wow. 😉 Feel better now?
@CiarraiAnn he was unacceptable even before our Government knew he was pro nazi, even his father had said he would ruin himself within the year

Theoretically, Victoria would be the very next…but all the other young Crown Princesses are also of age now since Leonor’s birthday in October. The biggest disappointment, to me, is that Princess Aiko will never be able to join them because of Japan’s stubbornness. 😢
Maybe one of Princess Aiko's descendants would marry a Prince Akishino in the future...
The Japanese princess didn’t seem to enjoy the royal spotlight. She should’ve had the right to refuse it, but I doubt she would have whole heartedly embraced it
I mean its not too late to proclaim aiko heiress cause parliament can still change the succession laws (which sadly their was plans of making made her become heiress when she was toddler but then her male cousin was born and it got scrapped out 🙄) there was a survey back in 2021 if im not mistaken that 80% of japanese approve of her becoming an heir and debates of changing the succession laws but idk anything is still possible. Cause hello japanese male heirs are disappearing so 🤷♂️ . I mean her grandfather, the former emperor, abdicated the throne and broke the law instead of serving for life. Anything can still happen , they just need to change succession laws before girl gets married (and dethroned of royal titles ☠️). And even if she doesn’t become one I really hope her cousin can break the law soon cause man get pressuring to bear a son is just 😑 .

I actually think the Queen of Denmark was really kind to abdicate.. This way Frederick can enjoy the moment and not be in mourning for his mother 😊
I agree...
And she can help guide her son as he first gets used to being the monarch and then she can get some rest
@@Fractureise I agree. It’s a better celebration when you’re not mourning. Yes she’s a queen but she’s his mother first. Queen consort Mary is stunning too
As a fan of your channel from Thailand, I’m so delighted to hear this story here. Furthermore, I’d like to give you more information about Thai royal family’s line of succession.
- According to the 1923 act of succession, which was legislated by King Rama VI and is still active today, female royals were prohibited to take the throne. The reason is that it was unlikely to have a queen regnant at that time. But time flies, and the constitution has the highest rank of law. We may see a woman to wear the crown in the future. This act also determines other interesting things, for example a male royal who marries a foreign woman must be excluded from the succession. It will be affected to his future descendants. Or a female royal must resign from the royal family and loses all of royal titles, if she wants to marry a man with lower rank.
- The King’s younger sister, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Wikipedia calls her Princess Royal), gets more popular than her brother, because the people think that she lives a very simple life, follows her father’s footsteps and is the hardest working royal. So she may be a good choice to become queen, if the king dies or abdicates.
- Vacharaeson’s visit to Thailand in almost 30 years surprised us all and usually stays in spotlight. It is believed that he still never met his father and sister.
- In Thai history, we have one abdication. King Rama VII abdicated in 1934, only two years after the Siamese Revolution. He remained in the UK until his death in 1941.
I hope I will live to see the day Princess Ingrid Alexandra becomes Queen of Norway!
You forgot the first female co-princess of Andorra from 1398-1412. Isabella of Foix inherited the County of Foix from her brother Matthew and therefore became co-princess of Andorra at the same time.
The Bhutanese rule about abdication was news to me. Thank you, I like learning something new. As for King Harald V of Norway, he has sadly been a lot in and out of hospital recently (including right now) but seems to be in great spirits, and Crown Prince Haakon seamlessly steps in as regent whenever needed as the Norwegian rules on a temporary regency are very relaxed (all you need is basically a doctor’s note).
I am Swedish and I believe that King Carl XVI Gustaf will continue for at least ten more years. Partly because no Bernadotte Regent has abdicated (as Lindsey said) but also because he is healthy, strong and he really loves his job. But above all because he and the queen know how tough it is to be king and queen while having small children. (After all, all other modern-day regents have been crown princes/princesses for so long that their children have at least reached their teenage years before becoming regents) Victoria and her siblings have also publicly mentioned that they found it difficult that their parents were so busy and often absent when they where kids.
This! People allways talk about the age of the monarch when talking about abdication but allways neglects the age of the heirs children.
@AnnaLenaGbg It’s Regnant not Regent.
A Regent is someone who acts on behalf of another.
King Carl XVI Gustaf isn’t a Regent.
@@matthewmacpherson5071 Sorry! I know , but Google translate don´t. So please tell them!🙂
It's regent in Swenglish. 😂
"for at least ten more years" - jag hoppas att Carl Gustaf får vara med i många år till, och blir minst 100 år, så att Victoria blir drottning 👑 tidigast 2046.
The UK doesn't have a tradition of honourable abdication because the Commonwealth intentionally made it very difficult for a sovereign to abdicate after Edward VIII's abdication. To abdicate, the sovereign must obtain the permission/consent of the Parliaments of all eight of the fifteen Commonwealth realms who have the right to chime in, the legislatures of all the Australian states, and the legislatures of all the Canadian provinces.
No one seems to understand this. It's the law. It isn't optional, and they can't get around it unless they change the law.
An heir cannot abdicate. They can however make themselves unqualified for the throne by converting to Roman Catholicism.
And I should add that obtaining the consent means putting a bill through every one of these parliaments and legislatures, which in itself would likely take months if not years. The recent changes to the succession didn’t have to clear the Canadian provincial legislatures, and still it took *four years* for the bills allowing them to pass everywhere.
I feel that should Charles decide to abdicate down the road he would get permission even if took a bit of time and trouble. He's already past the age of retirement, he's not the icon his mother was after 70 years on the throne and William is very popular.
Realistically if the King wanted to abdicate they'd move the legislation through the Parliaments much quicker. Especially depending on what the reasons were no Parliament/Government would want to be the one holding it up for everybody else.
Of course when Edward VIII abdicated the Statue of Westminster (which recognised the monarchies of the Dominions, now Commonwealth Realms, to be seperate legally) had already been instituted, and the Canadian and South African Parliaments had to pass their own Acts to make it happen.
Ireland also took the opportunity to change their laws and moved towards abolishing the Monarchy altogether, which I could see some modern countries doing too.
And so many people were hoping King Charles would cede the throne to William. It doesn't work that way, guys.
Feels quite empty being Queen-less, but hopefully we’ll get there soon👹 have a nice week :)

Peter Phillips, (Queen Elizabeth II’s oldest grandson) did not marry a catholic. His now ex wife renounced Catholicism before she married Peter or he would’ve lost his place in the succession. They married in 2008 and the rule was changed in 2011.
I highly doubt that Charles III will abdicate. If his recently diagnosed cancer advances to the point that he can't rule, I'd imagine he'd settle for William being regent.
I agree. He waited over 70 years to be king and his whole life has been about it- he’ll never give it up now.
Exactly, that is much more in keeping with British tradition. Think George III, and his son (the later George IV) as Prince Regent.
Abdication or Vacating the Throne is seen as dishonourable, think Edward VIII and James II/VII.
He wont. With all heali issues, with will's kids being kids not adult (at least George) , with willing to give kids as long normal upbringing as its possible- he won't
Charles may have wanted to be king, but was not anxious for it. I saw an interview with him in which he was asked if he was looking forward to that and his reply was an icy "You're talking about the death of my mother."
Ingrid is technically going to be Norway's second queen regnant. Margaret I was Norway's first queen from 1388 till 1412.
I think what Lindsey meant is that Princess Ingrid would be Norway’s first Queen Regnant to be Norwegian. Queen Margaret I was Danish.
She also might have been referring to the fact that Margaret I was queen of a united Calmar Union. Ingrid Alexandra will be the first exclusive queen on Norway
As a Tongan, thank you for the inclusion of our monarchy and people in this video. I would love to see a future video on the history of the Tongan monarchy. As soon as you mentioned that abdication rule in Bhutan's constitution, I shared this video in a Discord server for Disney Descendants as a possible explanation for why King Beast thought it was a remotely good idea to retire in his middle age and pass the throne on to his 16-year-old son who is still in high school. Luxembourg had a Great Grand Duchess: Charlotte, mother of Jean, wife to Robert of Bourbon-Parma and Sister in Law to the last Austrian Empress, Zita. And, last not least, she succeeded her sister Adelaide, who was....deposed...by popular choice after WWI.

Bravo on another interesting look at royals across Europe. I have a video request:
Through the channel UsefulCharts I learned about several matrilineal dynasties amongst royal history in Europe. I checked, and noticed that not only were Isabella I of Castile and Manuel I of Portugal were matrilineal cousins, but there was more inbreeding in the Iberian Peninsula than I'd previously known of. Would a video on that history, which adds to the Habsburg inbreeding problems mentioned in previous videos, be a possibility?
Queen Elizabeth II was Prince George’s great grandmother * 10:11
HRH The Princess Bajrakitiyabha is most probably not on this earth anymore. So it's Sirivannavari who's gonna succeed her father as Queen. The King gave Sirivannavari high Military ranks recently, indicating that she'll be his heir
I don't know much about the whole situation, Wikipedia (which I don't trust anyway, lol) says she's still in a coma. Do a lot of people think that she passed away and the royal family has just kept their mouths shut? And why would they not want to talk about her possibly dying? Genuinely curious! If you know any of the answers to my questions, anyway :)
The last statement about The Princess’s health was issued on January 8, 2023. There’re rumors that her brain is completely dead and she can still be alive because of medical devices. Many people believe that she’s already gone, but her father, who actually believes in fate and fortune, is not ready to let her go and finding an appropriate day to announce her death. As a Thai, I think Princess Sirivannavari has a lack of popularity and no interest in political issues. Do not overlook Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the king’s younger sister, because she’s incredibly popular among royalists!
@@doradoraemon4087 Ah okay, that makes sense. It would make sense that she's actually brain dead and can't.. come back, but they just aren't ready to either personally accept it or make an announcement. That's understandable. Thank you for the information. :)
@@doradoraemon4087That’s not possible with the current constitution of Thailand.
The constitution said The King may choose any of his *son or daughter* as heir to the throne. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is the king’s *sister* and therefore it would be against the constitution to designated her as heir to the throne. Even if the king did not designated an heir when his reign had ended, the government must still only invite one of his son or daughter to take the throne.
The only possible scenario is if his reign ended and there’s no surviving son or daughter… then the throne will pass to his next eldest sibling, in this case that would be Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn but this scenario is highly unlikely as the King still has many sons and daughters…
Why do you say that? Thai court may be sonewhat obscure, but I still think they would have issued a statement for such an important event as the death of the king's first born. Besides, there would have been a funeral, and the king would have been personally affected, which he did not look to be.
WOW REALLY 💕💕💕 GREAT JOB!!!!!!
Here is to hoping that Leonor marries a member of the Capetian dynasty so that the House of Bourbons does not lose the throne of Spain after her time. Unlike other royal houses like Bernadotte or Windsor (where house membership go hand-in-hand with the succession to the throne), Spain is different because the House of Bourbon is part of the larger Capetian dynasty and is thus governed by the dynasty’s rules where house membership is limited to male-line descendants only.

The Monarchies of Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands were once all part of the Duchy of Burgundy. Burgundy knew the possibility of female succession and had it in happen in 1477, when Mary took over from Charles the Bold.
And, last not least, but probably more important with regard to that: as long as the House of Hapsburg ruled in Burgundy (later on known as Spanish/Austrian Netherlands), it was usually the task of either the eldest sister or daughter of the current Hapsburg ruler (either in Spain or Austria) to be Governor his or her stead.
So, those countries have a long tradition of female Rule.

Edward VIII never had a coronation or an anointing. The anointing really seems to be the thing that keeps British monarchs on the throne. So he really wasn't breaking his vows.
@LJB103 That is not true, he was Monarch of our country from the moment his father died and if he had been given permission to marry Wallis he wouldn't
have abdicated. but thank god he did
@@lsmith9249 I understand that, but don't all the official vows take place during the coronation? It was "the anointing" that was always given as the reason that a British monarch (for my lifetime that was Elizabeth II as she took the throne 6 months before I was born) would not abdicate. Edward never had that.
@LJB103 no, the coronation is just the religious rite part, all legalities and power is transferred the moment the monarch dies. He was king in every single way, the coronation is not necessary and most countries don't have them anymore, it's just ceremonial.
@@LJB103 no.
@@arielsclamshellbra Your last part is my point, exactly. Because they have no coronation, they also have little problem with abdicating when they get older and less capable of performing their roles (Harald V being a stubborn exception) or realizing that time has moved on and younger minds with newer ideas are needed.
My first thought at the title was Princess Victoria from Sweden as she's the oldest of the heir apparent princesses. Earlier,, I thought it odd that Sweden's king took away his already born son's position by making the change of succession retroactive (instead of for future heirs like England did). But apparently he didn't want to but the country made him? It's odd that Swedish people insisted the change of succession had to be retroactive and not just for future born heirs?
