9:57 The game sending you back to 6-1 after dying on any of its bosses is actually a glitch, but the devs decided to leave it in to make the game harder.
Me and my best friend (He passed away a few years ago, God rest his soul 🙏) found the NG arcade game at a Putt-Putt back in 89 over our spring break and loved it. Spent many quarters that week. I remember my mom taking me to get the NES version at Toys R Us later that year. Called my friend down to my house, popped it in the NES and.... we were underwhelmed. It was just so different from the arcade version. Of course, we gave the game a chance and it went on to become one of our favorite NES games of all time but it didn't start out that way. Good memories. 😁 Excellent video as always. I had no idea that the arcade game and NES version were designed at the same time with different developers. Learn something new everyday. 👍
Thanks for sharing your story and sorry about your friend. I think a lot of people were disappointed who were fans of the arcade game when it came time to finally try out the NES version. Honestly though, the NES version is much better than the arcade LOL Thank you for the nice words, glad you enjoyed it

A real classic game and I played the modern versions a lot too. A quick mention to The Last Ninja that was shown. What a game that was it was probably one of the best looking games on the C64 . The wall flip and swinging from the poles Were really memorable for me. I believe that was the first time I've mentioned the last ninja in one of my videos so I wanted to give it a brief shout out. Glad you enjoyed it
It was one of the first games I played which allowed you to slam enemies into foreground/background objects, which explode on impact. After accidentally launching a guy into a electrical transformer atop a wooden pole in the Brooklyn stage I was hooked... Erm, with the game... Not on hurling random New Yorkers into hi voltage pylons...
Oh my goodness. You did it again. You reminded me if a game I used to own, but TOTALLY forgot about, in this case, The Last Ninja. After I've watched this vid, I'm gonna try to find some more material for it.

Great video. Not sure if the change to "heros" or "shadows" made to much difference but how weird that kids could buy that stuff back then :)

As fireworks burst in the dark of night and animals cower under couches and beds I shall relax in these dark hours with a 30 minute (or less) PatmanQC classic about the classic that is Ninja Gaiden.
This is a good video on Ninja Gaiden. This brings fond memories of Ninja Gaiden 1-3. The story and gameplay is what kept me playing until finishing all 3 games on Nintendo. The first game has infinite continues and the second game also has infinite continues but the third game has only 5 continues. The series on the NES all have good music.
That Tiger Bowling handheld was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. I traded some sold some in yard sales but that one stayed with me until it died.
great video man, I've only played the first ninja gaiden on the nes, in Australia we call it 'shadow warriors' as well, and the intro to the first game is ridiculously epic, I've never seen anything like it, and the cutscenes had the best graphics I seen for the system
Played the arcade version first. Can't say I have a favorite between the two , they're both different games with the same character. Great video as always.
another fantastic video I can't wait to see how you explain Ninja gaiden that came out for the Xbox that will be a fun view still one of my old-time favorite games
I had the Master System one and I remember it being very impressive for the time. - Ive never really seen the arcade original - it looks pretty interesting.
I loved the nes trilogy and put many hours in on those. I briefly played the arcade version a few times but it was never really in a place i had access to as a kid. Ive always held it in a high regard but i wonder how well it would hold up playing it now. I tend not to enjoy beat em ups as much as i used to. Great topic and video once again. You are awesome sir.
Back in the day I think I preferred the arcade version but the more time I spent with the NES version that won me over hands down. Thanks for the nice words, glad you enjoyed the content
Just like Double Dragon, I preferred the arcade version.(update) I just bought this on ps4. I've been on an arcade kick lately. I got this, Double Dragon 1 &2 and the Contra Collection. While I was playing this my son walked by and said "everytime I see you playing ps4, the graphics look worse and worse" 😂
The Amiga game is stunning, that opening soundtrack is brilliant. Thankfully, whilst I still have my Amiga version, I now own the Arcade version on my Nintendo Switch too.
Very nice retrospective so far, I had no idea that so many ports of the original arcade game existed! I have played the arcade game and the NES trilogy, haven't tried the rest. However, the Black Sabbath song that the arcade game ripped off was not entitled "I Am Iron Man", it's just called "Iron Man" (although the words "I am Iron Man" are spoken at the beginning of the song). Take it from someone who has listened to their 1970 album "Paranoid" more times than any sane human being should!
Oh man you made my heart beat fast today 💖😊 i was in high school when the NES trilogy came out, never had the chance to play the arcade cause it never came to Guatemala, Ninja Gaiden one was the hardest to beat, specially that part when you had to hit on the nose a boss, it took me many hours to beat it 😂 while listening to you review of Ninja Gaiden 2 i thought of the waterfal screen and you showed it, Ahaha!!! Ninja Gaiden 3 was hard to beat, there was an alien at the end as far as i remember..... never knew many conversions existed until today, thanks to you. Recently my son played this game on the xbox but the first time i saw it i was like ☹ i just..... didn't like it. Thank you for this wonderful video, until the end i noticed it was 27 mns long!!! Glad to know your are safe and sound. I would like to see a review about Bionic Comando-Capcom, another extremely difficult game to beat or Desert Assault-Data East. Thank you! 🇬🇹
To be honest when I was recording footage for this game I couldn't get very far but when I was younger I managed to beat all three. I guess my skills have deteriorated LOL bionic commando is on the list so at some point in the future I'll cover it
8:11 I always thought Ryu's dad, Ken, was the ninja in gray because I thought the ninja in red was just walking away down a hill after slaying Ken, and we see that character again as Bloody Malth who wears red.
If anyone doesn't know. The official soundtracks for the entire NES series and the arcade version was released on Bandcamp. $20 dollars I was glad to pay. This is one my favorite series of ALL TIME! I'll play this series ANYTIME. It doesn't matter. Today's kids don't know anything about quality.
I thought the arcade version was the coolest game but only came across it a couple times. One day I saw the PC version in a store and bought it. I was so excited! When I played it I was very disappointed but figured at least it worked. If I'm not mistaken it only had 2 levels. Then I was really disappointed and felt ripped off. Great seeing footage of the arcade again. That part where you cross the highway brought back great memories!
3:18 - Maybe. But their reaction speed increases drastically, in stages and the timing for getting the first hit changes. Spamming attacks like in 4:51 will get you killed quick. In the NES games, the dragon sword range is shorter with every installment. In the 1st one, it's vertical/horizontal range was great. In the 2nd one, the vertical range was incredibly reduced. In the 3rd one, unless you're using the sword power-up, the range is shorter than the sword itself.
Yeah, I would have TREMENDOUSLY preferred something like the arcade game to the the Ninja Gaiden game for the NES which I got for Christmas of 1989. The things about the arcade game that are more similar to Double Dragon are exactly what I would have wanted in a video game.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-DocumentariesNot me. Even watching game play makes me sick. I can't stand those vapid one-hit enemies who explode when you do some stupid-looking little strike that looks like nothing. It's like playing as a rodent running around mindlessly that just hits things once in a while that explode on contact whereas the arcade game actually seems to have given good feedback including having a more human feel.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Out of all the 20+ years I've owned and replayed it however? I didn't beat it until a few months ago. Hard game! I dominated 1 & 2 a number of times. 3 on the NES is up next!
The arcade version wasn't a two button game, it had three. There was grab button on the top of the joystick that was used to grab the onto the poles and also to grab the line above in the tightrope sections. Did the one/two button ports just autograb if you jumped near a pole or something? There was also a sort of secret move. If you had the sword power up and did the wall jump and pushed attack, you do a downward sword chop as the jump lands, which hits whoever you just jumped over. Given how few moves the game has, it's surprising they'd have wasted the effort to make one that is so limited in use.
Bloody Brilliant Patman! Unfortunately due to my shift pattern I didn't get chance to watch this first part last week, so while I stuff myself full of eggs, toast and tea, I'm also gonna binge on part two as well!! Hope you and yours are all doing okay and staying safe in the Pat Cave?? Or is it called the Arcade of Solitude???
Thank you my friend, stay safe because I know you have a job in the public field so it's imperative that safety comes first. It is actually called the Pat cave LOL, but I do like the arcade of solitude that's a good one :-)
All I ever had was the Tiger Handheld version that my Aunt gave me when I was a kid, and I still have it today. Time and Throwing Stars would always run out, and both were required to beat the levels. I only thought it was neat when it made an appearance in "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare."
I remember getting Ninja Gaiden for the Atari Lynx. I'd never played the arcade game, but had played the NES version. I'd thought that the game had been cut down, to fit on the little Lynx. Little did I realise that is was a pretty much a conversion of the arcade game.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I never got that impression of the NES game vs. the Atari Lynx. Ninja Gaiden was a face paced game on the NES, while the arcade game had a slower pace, more akin to something like Final Fight. Looking at the arcade game footage, it is clearly a slower paced game, like the Lynx game.
I only beat the first NES game once... I was mistakenly led to believe you could only beat the final boss with the Jump n' Slash, and while it does make the final confrontation easier, hanging on to it long enough to _use_ it on him is a huge challenge.
If you wanna feel a real punch in the gut, look up the Ninja Gaiden speed run videos and its history.. Those guys are monsters! Thanks for another great video yet again!
Love all of your research and history on this game. One correction though. His name is pronounced "Reee-yu". Not "Rye-yu". Other than that, love your channel. Keep up the good work man ☺️

That Tiger Bowling handheld was one of my absolute favorites as a kid. I traded some sold some in yard sales but that one stayed with me until it died.
I didn't realize there is this much love for that game. I always enjoyed mine and played it constantly
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries it helped that I started bowling at 3 lol
great video man, I've only played the first ninja gaiden on the nes, in Australia we call it 'shadow warriors' as well, and the intro to the first game is ridiculously epic, I've never seen anything like it, and the cutscenes had the best graphics I seen for the system
I can still recall playing it for the first time and like you I was blown away by the cinematics and the gameplay.
Played the arcade version first. Can't say I have a favorite between the two , they're both different games with the same character. Great video as always.
Same with me, I played the arcade game first and was blown away with the cinematics…… That is until I saw the NES version :-)
The wind level theme is the best 8bit tune ever!!!
It is really good
another fantastic video I can't wait to see how you explain Ninja gaiden that came out for the Xbox that will be a fun view still one of my old-time favorite games
I didn't think the ones in the Xbox were too bad to be honest. Thank you for the nice words
I had the Master System one and I remember it being very impressive for the time. - Ive never really seen the arcade original - it looks pretty interesting.
The gameplay is a lot slower on the arcade version but the Master system version is really well done
Thank you for another great one, Patman
Glad you enjoyed it
Just like Double Dragon, I preferred the arcade version.(update) I just bought this on ps4. I've been on an arcade kick lately. I got this, Double Dragon 1 &2 and the Contra Collection. While I was playing this my son walked by and said "everytime I see you playing ps4, the graphics look worse and worse" 😂
😂😂
LOL that's hilarious
Oooh can’t wait to watch this soon. Ninja Gaiden is my all time favorite series I can’t get enough of it. The nes trilogy is legend 💥
Absolutely :-)
I thought I remembered the arcade version having a grab button on the joystick?
There is an attack button and a jump button but no dedicated grab button As far as I can tell
There were indeed Arcade versions that had a grab button on top of the joystick. Played that version at my local skating rink as a kid.
@@ninjalawpsn same here. The grab button most certainly existed.
PC Engine had a port of the NES version that was developed by Hudson.
Stay tuned for part two
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries lol You know I going to.... :D
One of the NES games. I still can't beat till this day. Lol. Thank you yet again.
I beat it back in the day but I don't think I'd be able to do it now. Thanks for watching
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries you're welcome. Thank you for giving your time to create such great content for video gamers.
The Amiga game is stunning, that opening soundtrack is brilliant. Thankfully, whilst I still have my Amiga version, I now own the Arcade version on my Nintendo Switch too.
Long before mame Was a reality all we could rely on for the home conversions so yes this one was absolutely stunning
Ninja Gaiden proved that there could never be a perfect arcade port to 80's beat em up games.
Great video, I cant wait till part 2
Glad you enjoyed it Thank you so much
Endless nights on the nes mastering these games. God they were hard. All 3 of them. The Arcade looks great.
So did I, I always enjoy the arcade game too
One of my favorite arcade games!
I always enjoyed it as well
Been waiting for Ninja Gaiden..thanks.
Hope you enjoy it
Very nice retrospective so far, I had no idea that so many ports of the original arcade game existed!
My bad, thanks for the correction
DUUUUUDE - please do a series on The Last Ninja. Best 80s computer game. God that game was amazing.
It is on the list just not sure when I'll get to it :-)
Oh man you made my heart beat fast today 💖😊 i was in high school when the NES trilogy came out, never had the chance to play the arcade cause it never came to Guatemala, Ninja Gaiden one was the hardest to beat, specially that part when you had to hit on the nose a boss, it took me many hours to beat it 😂 while listening to you review of Ninja Gaiden 2 i thought of the waterfal screen and you showed it, Ahaha!!!
Thank you! 🇬🇹
I was thinking that too!!! He should do Bionic Commando!
Loved the arcade version and got it the Spectrum. My friend had Ninja Gaiden on the NES and I loved it.
It was really good
Thanks for sharing in the Gaming Culture Group. I been watching your vids for a while, had no idea that was you.
Absolutely, thanks for allowing it and watching my videos
Love your videos man. Well done sir! Are you from Quebec? Cheers from Magog
No I'm from Illinois, thank you
If anyone doesn't know. The official soundtracks for the entire NES series and the arcade version was released on Bandcamp. $20 dollars I was glad to pay. This is one my favorite series of ALL TIME! I'll play this series ANYTIME. It doesn't matter. Today's kids don't know anything about quality.
Thanks for the info
As ALWAYS a great docu so many thanks for the uploads👍👍👍
Thank you very much :-)
I thought the arcade version was the coolest game but only came across it a couple times.
It was around in my area for very long either before it was shoveled away. I spent much more time with the NES version. Glad you enjoyed it
History of Total Carnage next please!
One of the grittiest arcade games that scared the hell outta me, especially the table saw ☠️.
LOL, I'm going to have to do a video where I talk about the most traumatizing game over sequences :-)
That arcade continue screen haunted me as a kid. Though it also fascinated me.
LOL, it's definitely something you don't forget
Yeah, I would have TREMENDOUSLY preferred something like the arcade game to the the Ninja Gaiden game for the NES which I got for Christmas of 1989. The things about the arcade game that are more similar to Double Dragon are exactly what I would have wanted in a video game.
When I was younger I would've preferred the arcade game at home but the more time I spent with the NES version it won me over
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-DocumentariesNot me.
Atari Lynx version of Ninja Gaiden Arcade was my 1st Ninja Gaiden Game and 1st Atari Lynx game, still have it. Love it.
Excellent, it's pretty good for a handheld
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Out of all the 20+ years I've owned and replayed it however? I didn't beat it until a few months ago. Hard game! I dominated 1 & 2 a number of times. 3 on the NES is up next!
Thank you for this! The original NES games especially part 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of all time!👌👍 Also, happy 4th of July!✋✌
Absolutely, thank you for watching. Happy fourth right back at you
The arcade version wasn't a two button game, it had three.
Thanks for the info
I Got a NINJA GAIDEN Handheld Game from EBay Today
How is it?
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It Works Great
I Just Need the NINJA GAIDEN 2 and 3 Handheld Games
Awesome video as always.thanks for the history on this great game
Glad you enjoyed itThank you
Bloody Brilliant Patman!
The Spectrum version also allows one to grab to the scenario and hit the enemy while hanging.
Thanks for the info
I liked & I subscribed.. & I’m about to go watch part 2.
Excellent, thank you so much
I'm 37 and that Ninja Gaiden continue screen gives me nightmares to this day lol.
LOL, it was fantastic
Vital part of my childhood right here! First game that had me into the storyline
For me as well, the cinematics were top-notch
All I ever had was the Tiger Handheld version that my Aunt gave me when I was a kid, and I still have it today. Time and Throwing Stars would always run out, and both were required to beat the levels. I only thought it was neat when it made an appearance in "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare."
I've seen that movie but I don't recall the handheld. Thanks for the info
Actually, the fight in for beginning of NG 1 was between Ryu's dad and Malth, not the Jaquio.
Ninja Gaiden 2 is one of the greatest 8-bit games I have ever played!
I agree
That feeling putting in a Quarter into a Ninja Gaiden Arcade Cabnet 😎👍
Absolutely, and you have to love that continues Screen :-)
OMG chainsaw to the chest
..NOOOOO DONT DIE😱
This game I remembered
It's an all-time classic
documentaries indeed it's very well an all around classic known to all I hope we get a new ninja gaiden sometime in the future
I remember getting Ninja Gaiden for the Atari Lynx. I'd never played the arcade game, but had played the NES version. I'd thought that the game had been cut down, to fit on the little Lynx. Little did I realise that is was a pretty much a conversion of the arcade game.
It is essentially the NES game only way smaller in scale.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
I never got that impression of the NES game vs. the Atari Lynx.
It was really difficult, I beat it once But that was enough for me
If you wanna feel a real punch in the gut, look up the Ninja Gaiden speed run videos and its history.. Those guys are monsters! Thanks for another great video yet again!
Thanks for the info! I'll check it out, thanks
Love all of your research and history on this game. One correction though. His name is pronounced "Reee-yu". Not "Rye-yu". Other than that, love your channel. Keep up the good work man ☺️
America always gets that name wrong. smh
Don't worry, I will address the pronunciation in part two. Thanks
Thank you
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries its no big deal. I used to say it the same way before someone corrected me on it lol.
The Ninja Gaiden games on the NES have fantastic and memorable sound tracks!
Yes they do
Great stuff again Pat!
Thank you
Awesome video, as usual, Patman! The NES original is my favorite game OF ALL TIME!! :D
also, I had no idea there was a Master System or Game Gear version released, though I had heard of the Genesis version that was never officially released.
